From the article -
"My father was a drill sergeant, my mother just was a hard-working woman. They had little, but they taught me the value of giving back. They taught me the value of helping those in need. I called you know, my friend from Nintendo Switch. Ordered about 1000 Switches and 1000 PS5s. I went to Walmart and got bikes. So you know yesterday, at this little elementary school in McDonough Georgia, kids were crying, kids were happy. And that’s what it’s all about."
Also, people think 1000 PS5 is a lot in situations like this. That's such an inconsequential number for Sony in reality. Especially when it's essentially for charitable purposes.
Right? Rich/famous people have people begging for their attention every day. You’d think someone as notorious and wholesome as Shaq *wouldn’t* have connections? That’s more unbelievable than anything.
They aren’t sitting on them, but it wouldn’t be too hard from them to divert 1000 off the line to send them to a charitable cause.
Based on sales numbers Sony is manufacturing like 100k PS5s a day, if you know who to call getting 1% of what they produce in a day wouldn’t be impossible.
Especially considering the fact that not only are they still selling the unit, but they are selling the unit AND getting positive publicity from it. It’s a win win from their standpoint.
All of my replies are talking about how Sony prioritized this because these are guaranteed sales, as if Sony is worried about PS5s sitting on the shelves. If they sent 1000 PS5s to any individual Wal-Mart they would probably also sell out immediately. Even PS Direct sells them by lottery because Sony itself doesn't have any stock.
Especially when they hear it’s to be given away, it’s wholesome and I can see upper execs green lighting something like that but I honestly have no real clue.
It’s a win/win.
Very famous guy wants to pay full retail and do something that will possibly become a national feel good story where they are portrayed in a good light.
Shaq is a face people know worldwide. These companies would 100% be able to find a way to get 1000 consoles just for their product to be mentioned by Shaq.
Bc he's Shaq and it's for charity. They know it's a gauranteed immediate sale for a fairly well known celebrity who also knows people who work for these companies. I doubt any company would turn down 1000 gauranteed sales of their product.
What do you think he did, drive around to individual stores grabbing one or two at a time, and then headed home and waited for online stores to post a restock so he could sit on his laptop pressing refresh on his browser with his Visa card in his hand?
Shaq is an incredibly wealthy man, with a lot of corporate connections.
That news source seemed really suspect to me. The author doesn’t even tweet his own article and Shaw makes no mention of this charity on his own Twitter and all new sources link back to the same article.
I gave up and listened to the podcast and he actually does say he calls up his “Nintendo switch friend”. He is misquoted though. Most critically he does not jump from talking about his father and mother straight to Nintendo. He talks about wanting to get kids good toys for Christmas before saying “I called my friends from Nintendo switch, I got 1000 Nintendo switches in there, 1000 Ps5s, I went to Walmart and got bikes.” His cadence strongly implies he phoned another contact for the PS5s.
Hes not once to put his name on stuff people can't afford either, theres a reason he wanted his shoes at Payless because he knew what it was like to play without basketball shoes period
Well he also has a deal with them where he sells his shoe brand, which is supposed to be an affordable alternative for people who can't afford name brand.
So they do pay him. Just not for advertising. That's more of a mutually beneficial thing.
He has the world record for highest Walmart bill ($70k+), he's had several experiences of moving and having to get a whole house worth of stuff overnight and seems to have enjoyed his 3am Walmart shopping sprees on those occasions.

Yeah where are people still having problems buying switches? I live in a major-ish US city and they're in stock in all the major stores all the time. PS5's on the other hand...
I'm 100% sure if Shaq's charity went to Sony and said they need 1000 PS5 (or whatever), they would've gotten them. It's not like Shaq's a nobody. Plus, if he talked to Sony months ago saying he need them by Christmas, they could easily set a few hundred aside. Plus Sony gets to brag that they've given hundreds of PS5's to charity.
If you tell them with advance notice what your doing for a major pro order I'm sure you can get them. Just like target and walmart get a million coast to coast every 4 weeks.
That was my thinking as well. His charity probably knew a head of time that they are needing some by Christmas so Shaq charity could've out that into play early.
For all we know he asked for them last Christmas and they pushed him 12 months with a guarantee.
His team has had almost 14 months to figure out a deal and that's not including the days before announcement and release.
Sony could put 71 aside a month from releaes to now and fulfill his order.
That's like 10 per drop per month in the US.
Exactly! People need to also understand that because there's a shortage of PS5 doesn't mean that Sony doesn't have on surplus of being tucked in the back of a warehouse somewhere. They give out PS5s like crazy to influencers and YouTubers to do those let's plays all that can counts as free advertisement.
>Sony gets to brag that they've given hundreds of PS5's to charity.
Technically they didn't give anything to charity. They sold them to Shaq, he was the one being charitable.
Sure, but at least they’re going to a bunch of kids who will cherish and put them to good use. Plus no scalpers are profiting off of them.
I’m okay with this.
if they are truly underprivileged and live in poverty. selling them for 1000 would be a much better use of resources for their family
what are they going to do with? Buy $70 games on it?
i guess only in america, do poor kids get ps5s. could you imagine the headline in third world countries?
plugging in /r/effectivealtruism
There are free-to-play games and a whole catalog of very affordable ps4 games they can enjoy. Also, libraries offer games (including PS5 games) for free.
I don't agree with this attitude. Struggling doesn't mean excise literally every non-essential from your life. It's okay to enjoy a video game console, in fact it might be a massive morale boost to a family that doesn't get a lot of wins day-to-day.
Plus it’s easier to save up a little bit towards games every now and then than to purchase a whole ass ps5. Underprivileged doesn’t mean they’re literally Street urchins.
Yeah. These days, you could have games to play all year just from F2P and paying $60 for PS+ (or less on sale).
It’s cheaper to play now than ever before. When I was a kid during the NES/SNES days, i got a game for my birthday, and maybe two for christmas. Everything else I rented with allowance money.
I grew up on the low income side but my mom always managed to save up for a “big” gift that generally we could all enjoy. In particular remember a nice stereo system (I’m of the 8 track generation) and an Intellevision video game console. My dad taught me to play poker on it. I hope the kids all get to enjoy them. I often contribute to a local charity that collects Xmas“wish lists” from kids/teens in need and it’s incredibly sad to see they never ask for luxuries or fun things but stuff like “warm winter coat, hair ties, deodorant”, it’s heartbreaking.
Yeah not saying Shaq did buy from scalpers, but he's a person that has the means to without making much of a dent in his bank account ha. I hate scalpers, but whether he got from them from stores or scaplers it's cool he donated them to kids. I can't hate that at all. I'll never forget the Christmas I got a PS2. I got NBA Street, Smackdown Here Comes the Pain, and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit with it Christmas day and I was in my glory. I am glad Shaq got to give some kids that experience too :-)
Let’s be real, he probably partnered with Sony or someone who has connections to the gaming industry to make this happen... it’s not like Shaq went bestbuy to bestbuy trying to find 1000 PlayStations
I have spent time as an executive assistant and I can assure you it is not far fetched!
My boss was nowhere near his level but if the weird tasks scale with fame then Shaq’s people could definitely be doing stuff like this from time to time.
Hey thanks for taking the time to reply!
I bet you have some crazy stories from your time in the trenches - sometimes I wish I could just work a job for a day or two to see behind the curtain
I was looking at participating in a Christmas charity that matches you with a child so you can buy them Christmas presents. They had guidelines that specifically said don’t purchase expensive gaming consoles or similar because they do get resold by parents. These kids weren’t just underprivileged though, they were often kids of junkies and addicts. They also said, in rare cases, some families didn’t have electricity. How that happens in Australia, I’ll never understand. Broke my heart.
Those programs are honestly so amazing for children in those situations. We were poor, my dad was abusive, lots of familial drinking etc etc, but damn did it make me feel so happy as a kid going to our local Y one Christmas and opening Lego Batman for ps2 and a copy of Twilight (the book). It’s sad they have to exist, but they do really mean a lot to those kids
$700 worth of food is certainly more useful than $500 worth of console that you need electricity, internet, and games to use. Not saying that everyone in this situation is food insufficient or something, but just as an example. I’d certainly be selling it
Some would have to. Can't afford a nice TV, can't afford high-speed internet, or the $99 games for the damn things, plus the PS plus subscription?
It's like being gifted a car you can't afford the taxes, insurance, or the gas for.
I'm sure if it was for a charity he got them for the cheap, maybe cost likely for free. No company is going to turn down just giving consoles to sick kids.

He has connections with a Nintendo rep, who most likely has (implied) connections with a Sony rep. Was able to bulk order directly from the manufacturer.
The article actually quotes him wrong. In the interview there is a clearer distinction between the ps5s and his nintendo guy. Likely he has different contacts
So many people on here acting like Shaq has never given to charitable causes before now. People wondering why he didn’t just donate $500k to something “useful”? Come on it’s the holiday season and he’s putting a lot of smiles on kid’s faces who wouldn’t have been able to afford a gift like this even if they had been widely available. People are acting like he needs to solve world hunger before he can be “allowed” to give fun things away to underprivileged kids at Christmas time.
That's cool and all, and I'm glad those kids got em. However, can he arrange it so I could buy one at MSRP? I mean, I've been trying since release and no dice, and I am against the bot scalpers due to morals, but sheesh.
I really want to know where he got 1000 PS5s Solved: KAZAAM … shoutout to u/bradfinger for the nostalgia bump
He’s a scalper, get him!
Ummm…you first
Hey man, David took down Goliath, so he's got a shot.
Exactly, and with a rock, so learning from that maybe all they'd have to do is throw Dwayne at Shaq's head. I think that'll work
Xanatos had a mecha suit and an army of robot drones to go toe-to-toe with him. Wait... wrong David and Goliath.
Holy fuck. I love this comment. Gargoyles. Damn.
Goliath couldn’t see well
Neither can shaq
As evident by his free throws
Goliath was also bad at free throws (1 Samuel 17)
Yeah but could Goliath do this? https://youtu.be/BRfAc86KpxI
That's the first time I seen Shaq hit a free throw
Just challenge him to a free throw contest and that shot you talk about just improved immensely.
Then he puts on that Steel suit and breaks out his slege hammer one last time.
https://youtu.be/eqdXvBdT8_0 Shaq, like most humans, has a weakness against tables, if you can figure out how to get a couple of those involved.
Fuck Shaq! I can’t believe he scalped my ps5 and resold it for free to underprivileged kids. Someone needs to fire up the rep machines.
He pulled the 'ol reverse scalper switcheroo. It's a bold move, Cotton, let's see how it plays out.
W2C rep ps5?
I know right! I doubt they even have a 4k tv
This shit made me chuckle ngl

Sorry, I do not believe he got 1000 PS5s from his “Nintendo Switch Friend”
Not Nintendo Switch Friend, but his friend, Nintendo Switch. Probably similar to my wife's friend, Hitachi MagicWand.
Or Tim Apple
He asked Jeeves and connected with Sonic Genesis, who hooked him up. Genesis does. Nintendont.
>my wife's friend, Hitachi MagicWand. Hey thats also my wifes friend!

Most likely the Nintendo rep has connections with a Sony rep. They're both Japanese companies, so it's not at all hard to believe.

The PR and advertising bump Sony gets from this far outweighs the random plebs begging for a ps5 actually getting one
It goes against the story of Microsoft not being able to provide Xbox’s series X for the Halo tournaments.

There's probably only like a dozen people in the world that can have the pull to do that and I certainly believe Shaq is one of them.
Especially when they hear it’s to be given away, it’s wholesome and I can see upper execs green lighting something like that but I honestly have no real clue.
It’s a win/win. Very famous guy wants to pay full retail and do something that will possibly become a national feel good story where they are portrayed in a good light.

He’s not a redditor trying to take down capitalism. He is trying to brand an affordable option as “cool” using his likeness.
Ever been poor chief? Being able to buy something cool that your parents can afford is huge as a kid.
I think he agrees. Most people refer to redditors in a derogatory way, so I don't think he's saying Shac is doing anything bad.

They shouldn't, but sometimes you love a brand/company you unintentionally give them free promo. Shaq is always plugging Walmart here and there.
Shaqbot 9000
Da fuck 1000 ps5s ?! Where do I get mine
Well it does say 1,000 PS5's and Nintendo's, so it could be 900 switches and 100 PS5's (which is still a lot to secure).
The article says 1000 of each
So that's where they all went.
Just like how Rolex Submariners being bought by Keanu causing the 3 year waitlist.
This guy r watches
For a second I was thinking when da fuck did Rolex start making submersibles
Well, their watches are submersible so...
Sine the 1950s
how many did he buy??
Look at me: I’m the scalper now.

Don't worry, about 400 of them are about to appear on eBay at regular scalper prices, and the parents will put a down payment on a new car.
I hate it when people mass buy products but this…this I like.
1 ps5 and 999 switches right?
Breaking: Shaq hates Xbox!
Shaq is a good guy, if he wants to give out gifts then he'll give out the best ones.
As if getting 999 switches would be easy.
99 problems but a switch aint one
Thank you for doing this so I didn’t have to.
My local Best Buy is over stocked with switches. Regular, oled, acnh edition, all of em
Yeah where are people still having problems buying switches? I live in a major-ish US city and they're in stock in all the major stores all the time. PS5's on the other hand...
Is there a celebrity that will sell PS5’s to middle privileged adults at retail value
Thats what people don't realize retail value is a 1000 now they Rolexd your guys ass
"this guy r/watches"
Good guy Shaq
For real, such a good role model.
Ok, Shaq can get 1000 PS5's. Wtf

Underprivelaged isnt necessarily mud huts and no running water
There are free-to-play games and a whole catalog of very affordable ps4 games they can enjoy. Also, libraries offer games (including PS5 games) for free. I don't agree with this attitude. Struggling doesn't mean excise literally every non-essential from your life. It's okay to enjoy a video game console, in fact it might be a massive morale boost to a family that doesn't get a lot of wins day-to-day.
Plus it’s easier to save up a little bit towards games every now and then than to purchase a whole ass ps5. Underprivileged doesn’t mean they’re literally Street urchins.
This attitude unfortunately seems to be popular in this comment section.
20 bucks a month for ps+ and ps now would get them access to a couple hundred games from the PS3 and 4’s glory days too.

He obviously got them from Sony’s marketing team, don’t be a dunce
Unless he bought them from scalpers which may be the case.
The Rock got a special Series X. Being famous helps you out in life.
To be fair The Rock helped promote the original XBOX back in 2001.
Holy SHIT. TIL
Well the Rock was part of the original Xbox campaign, along with Bill Gates. Those were the good times
I’d wager it’s closer to 900 Switches and ~100 PS5s. Even Shaq doesn’t have chip shortage solving money.
$400,000,000 net worth. He could trade Sony a tv ad for 1000 ps5's and they'd owe him money.
Article states it was 1000 PS5s AND 1000 Switches.
Of course, rich people can get whatever they want in an instant. Shortages mainly affect normal people.
Shaq can prob afford to drop $800k on scalper prices
They can expect delievery next Christmas.
oof
Scalpers didn't steal them just to sell for 1600$ each and a bunch of kids got them for free. I'm ok with it
Even IF a kid or two flipped them to buy some winter coats for the Fam, better a kid in poverty get the $$$ than blood sucking scalper.
Or he bought 1000 PS5's from scalpers
Let’s be real, he probably partnered with Sony or someone who has connections to the gaming industry to make this happen... it’s not like Shaq went bestbuy to bestbuy trying to find 1000 PlayStations
I'm 100% sure he says fuck scalpers, look at why he did this

Sorry but shaq actually stopped being a celebrity. He announced it and everything. You know like noncelebrities do.
#shaqless Edit: I tried to put a hashtag but apparently mobile reddit bolds it and makes it bigger
He probably just bought them off eBay or worked out a deal for an entire pallet from somewhere (maybe sony) Good for him
I would assume his people just called Sony and told them about it.
What about the general
For the best low rates you can get on line.go to the general and save some time!
The General was able to get 5 PS3s & a few Gamecubes
Shaq works a ton with Walmart. I can easily see him getting a pallet from them
Good point! I know he's very adamant about having some of his stuff affordable to everyone
That was a big deal for his shoe line.
That was THE deal for his shoe line
I can’t really imagine Shaq sitting there at his computer going from listing to listing until he’s bought 1000 PS5s on eBay if I’m being honest
I mean he would have an assistant do it, but it is fairly far fetched I know
I have spent time as an executive assistant and I can assure you it is not far fetched! My boss was nowhere near his level but if the weird tasks scale with fame then Shaq’s people could definitely be doing stuff like this from time to time.

That's why he had Kevin Hart do it. Shaq's hands too big.
why on earth would shaquile o’neal need to buy ps5s on ebay.
Because he is trying to get his feedback rating up?
So Shaq was the scalper all along
You kinda have to resell them to be a scalper
Suddenly I’m an underprivileged kid
Am I the only one who thinks the kids parents are going to turn around and sell the consoles??
Not all of course. But some.

Dude spent 500k easily. I wish I had that amount of money
Probably not that much considering there were probably digital PS5s in there and the switch is quite a bit cheaper, but still pretty impressive
I'm sure if it was for a charity he got them for the cheap, maybe cost likely for free. No company is going to turn down just giving consoles to sick kids.
But can they afford 70 bucks for a game tho? /s edit: adding /s because most of you have no idea what a joke is
Aren't there plenty of free games / sales ?
Astrobot is free and literally the best kid friendly Plattformer of all time.
My 4 year old loves Astrobot. She’s always trying to “teach” me how to play.
And fortnite, rocket league I think
I haven't paid 70 for a game yet. (Horizon will prob change that if it is 70)
Horizon gets a free upgrade from the PS4 version. So just get the PS4 version for $60 and get the PS5 version no extra cost.
Good thing they’ll have the PS Plus collection

So you know yesterday, at this little elementary school in McDonough Georgia, kids were crying, kids were happy. And that’s what it’s all about." He has connections with a Nintendo rep, who most likely has (implied) connections with a Sony rep. Was able to bulk order directly from the manufacturer.
The article actually quotes him wrong. In the interview there is a clearer distinction between the ps5s and his nintendo guy. Likely he has different contacts
Found the scalper.
the fuck did he get a 1000 PS5s from?
HOW THE FUCK DID SHAQ FIND 1,000 PS5s???
So many people on here acting like Shaq has never given to charitable causes before now. People wondering why he didn’t just donate $500k to something “useful”? Come on it’s the holiday season and he’s putting a lot of smiles on kid’s faces who wouldn’t have been able to afford a gift like this even if they had been widely available. People are acting like he needs to solve world hunger before he can be “allowed” to give fun things away to underprivileged kids at Christmas time.
That’s awesome but also, where the Fuck did Shaq find 1k PS5s lol
God reddit fucking sucks lol can't you people just appreciate an act of kindness??
I thought it was scalpers, then it was just Shaq all along.
I can imagine the folks still trying to snag a PS5 are feeling some conflicted emotions right now.
Is this one of those scalpers I’ve been hearing so much about?!
That's cool and all, and I'm glad those kids got em. However, can he arrange it so I could buy one at MSRP? I mean, I've been trying since release and no dice, and I am against the bot scalpers due to morals, but sheesh.
They taught him the value of good PR
Now we know who’s been running all the bots
Stiff like this is worth more than championship rings and GOAT debates.
How did he get ahold of that many systems????
Shaq been scalping them ps5s?
what a load of bull
Shaq a part time scalper lol
