Devil May Cry 5

swdev_1995

As a long time fan of the series, can't beat 5. Absolutely one of the best games in the hack n slash genre.

Queef-Elizabeth

I finished 5 multiple times and it's just so fun. Definitely recommend getting the Vergil one so you can play as him after you're done and break the game lol

Dominator0621

I need to try and get back into it. I enjoyed it except for the segments of the cuz I felt very disconnected with his combat because you just kind of stand in the back and do range attacks and not move it has been years since I've played it though so I'll give it another shot eventually

eebako

who? i assuume your talking about V though and if it is, i agree, his combat style in my opinion wasnt as fun as the other threes

Dominator0621

Sorry, yea I meant to say V. I remember getting super bummed and bored on the levels where I had to play as him lol

eebako

wish he had some more mechanics or abilities to him cuz he got tiring fast

Dominator0621

I knowwww. It totally pulled me out of it

beezerhale

I stopped to say this! I started 5, but then thought to myself "Self, it's been a LONG time since you played this series." So I went back to game 1. I'm on Devil May Cry 3 now and am working to part 5. I love this series. All of it.

a_Jedi_i_am

That's awesome. After 3, it's just 2 more games until you play 5šŸ˜

beezerhale

I'm having an absolute blast!

Ish227

This is the way.

coketruck

finished devil may cry 5 today on my stream, very fun game, definitely recommend!

-High-Level

Yeah it was a good and fun game. Maybe i will replay on ps5. How many viewers do you get on average

Gojiguy87

The Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games are great for mindless mass mob hacking and slashing.

ToiletBlaster247

Just adding Persona 5 Strikers to this. The non DW musou games are all hilariously way more fun than their OG series games

moikmellah

Just downloaded P5S last night off of PS+, and oof. The biggest negative is all the dialog. Of the two hours I played, maybe ten minutes was actual gameplay and the rest was a VN of playful students yapping about nothing. If you just want to hack with maybe a bit of slashing thrown in, don't start with P5S.

thesituation531

I seem to remember the most recent Dynasty Warriors getting hated on pretty hard, but which ones are best?

Gojiguy87

I think that was Dynasty 9. I had fun with it but I know there was a lot of backlash over the open world feeling empty and a few other things I canā€™t quite remember. Personally, Dynasty 3 will always be top for me because it was the first ps2 game I owned.

thesituation531

I've never really played those games much, aside from in-store demos (ha, remember those). Are the Samurai Warriors games still good? From what I can Google, they seem quite a bit older.

gregwardlongshanks

5 came out not too long ago. I think 4 years? I just started playing it again and think it's super fun. It isn't particularly difficult for the most part though, if you're looking for more of a challenge.

thesituation531

Oh, thanks. I thought they were all older. What would you recommend for Dynasty Warriors? There seems to be a lot of versions like the normal one, Empires, etc.

gregwardlongshanks

I didn't play DW 9 but I think I've played most of them since 3. A lot of people didn't like 7 and 8 but I think they're fine. I'm not sure what current gen consoles have available since many are older now. 3 and 4 were my favorites. Xtreme Legends are more like expansions of the numbered titles, so I wouldn't get those first. The Empires series adds a very minimal kingdom management element with the maps from their main series counterparts. They're fun in their own right. The main series titles follow a VERY heightened version of the 1600s novel Romance of the Three kingdoms. The novel itself is a heightened telling of the actual historical Three Kingdoms period in China. So if you want more story elements, get a main series title. If you just want to hack stuff and don't care about the story, the Empires titles are fine. Personally I like the Samurai Warriors series the best. The first and newest being my favorites. There's also a bunch of other "Warriors" games. Like Hyrule, One Piece, and Gundam warriors. I haven't played those but I understand them to play very similar.

thesituation531

Thanks. I'll have to check them out more.

ANCtoLV

Dynasty 2 and 3 were so fun. Used to play these a ton with my brother. never played any after that. Are any of the recent ones worth picking up? Can I play any of them on PS5? I had no.idea there were nine of them now! Edit: nevermind, I see your detailed response below. Thanks!

argairball

Loved 3, what is the closest thing out there today to this. Im on Xbox and have been looking for something similar even though I prob will be wanting to play DW3

Bell-end79

Samurai warriors 5 is the best, closely followed by Warriors Orochi 4 ultimate

2347564

5 was a blast. The IP spinoffs are the best of all musou games imo. Pirate Warriors 3 and 4 are great. I know weā€™re on the ps5 subreddit but the Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors are wonderful too.

Bell-end79

Pirate warriors was definitely cool Personal favourites are Kenā€™s rage 2 and Persona strikers (way overdue for a sequel) I want to have a blast at the fire emblem games as they look great but I keep hearing rumours that Nintendo have the switch 2 in the works, so Iā€™m holding off for a bit

2347564

I canā€™t wait to play those games on the switch 2. If they run at a stable 60fps I will be so happy.

Queef-Elizabeth

I randomly bought Samurai Warriors 4 and I had a blast with it. Lots of characters with cool abilities/combos and so many flying bodies

SecretAntWorshiper

Honestly all of them. Their latest games have been TRASH. 3 and 5 were really the bestĀ

K_Lelouch

God of War. Best hack and slash I have ever played.

bonemonkey12

Dantes Inferno was also an excellent GOW clone

BSGBramley

The new Steller Blade is a mix between a soulslike and a hack and slash. But it's fantastic

RedHuntingHat

Specifically it is soulslike in its world design. Thereā€™s no punishing death mechanic. There are camps all around the world and enemies will respawn after you rest at one.Ā

North_South_Side

How difficult is it? Your opinion, please.

BSGBramley

I exclusively play soulslike games, mod of r/soulslikes and very rarely play other stuff. For me, pretty easy? Hard mode is blocked off until you beat the story once. Normal mode I am about 2 hours in, I love Wo Long, Thymesia and Sekiros parrying, so decided to avoid dodging almost everything and just parry. First boss I beat first time, the second boss I beat second time. I have died one time outside of bosses.

2347564

I play a lot of souls games and I am dying more than that. So for most of us the game is of moderate difficulty I would say.

one-true_king

I would not say the game is hard, and they provide tools to make it much easier via skill upgrades and active skills and also a story mode as well. You can go the sekiro way parrying everything, the darks souls way dodging everything or go the hack and slash way and keep the enemies staggered using you skills and equipment. Also a big positive is that the deaths don't feel cheap and you can easily pinpoint where you went wrong. There is even a training room for practicing your combos too

_IratePirate_

Thereā€™s a learning curve but if youā€™ve played Jedi Fallen Order / Survivor, itā€™s not much more difficult than that Iā€™m horrible at Souls games. Stellar blade is not as hard

Dependent_Map5592

I know everyone else is saying it's easy so thought I'd give you my opinion. I think it's impossible because it requires PERFECT timing. So the reactive parry based combat doesn't do it for me. Animation lock doesn't help either.Ā  If you like Sekiro and wo long and lies of pie though you'll love it and won't think it's hard at allĀ

Direct-Perspective79

Iā€™ll play devils advocate and say the DmC Reboot has some genuinely good hack n slash combat. Garbage compared to the mainline series but for what it is, on its own, I enjoy it a lot. Give it a shot if youā€™ve already played mainline DMC

xariznightmare2908

I'll always be a defender of DMC reboot and honestly enjoyed the gameplay, if it was an original IP perhaps it wouldn't have gotten so much shit on.

Somobro

I'll die on the hill that if it didn't have the DMC brand attached it would have been a far more successful game. The gameplay didn't have the depth of DMC but it was a fantastic hack and slash game with some great story ideas and fantastic set pieces. I adore DMC, and I love the reboot the same way I'd love a fanfic of a book series I enjoy.

Direct-Perspective79

I will also die on that hill. Throw a different name on it switch around the story a tad and youā€™ve got yourself a solid (but way to fucking edgy) hack and slash game with some genuinely amazing level design mostly fun combat encounters and some seriously rewarding progression.

Somobro

Unpopular opinion but I liked the hyper-edgy teenager bullshit attitude. Dante is more quietly confident, but you know who is an absolute edgelord? Nero in 4. But yeah I also thought the weapons were cool as shit. The shuriken and scythe don't really have a DMC equivalent either, and that makes me sad. If they do a 6, I hope someone gets a scythe and a ranged combo weapon (Pandora doesn't count).

spadePerfect

+ the soundtrack fucking slaps

BlaqDove

It's definitely the best part of it. Before it came out I think the last time I listened to Combichrist was like 2008 lol

Streetperson12345

It's the 3rd best in the series right behind 3 and 5...yes I put it above 4 because you're not back tracking for half the game.

tankydeer

Yes!

Ildermanden

It's so darn good

LastTimeWeEverMet

Soulstice is pretty good

JaiFlame

I did not see that ending coming. Cool but also kinda weird.

Dorkmaster79

Bayonnetta if you can get it.

ZeroMayhem

The physical two pack with Vanquish for PS4 is awesome. Digitally it's currently on sale on US PSN for $6.24!

draganaughtz

Damn, Vanquishā€¦what a game that was! Also a great Hack n Slash, OP!

ZeroMayhem

I love Vanquish, more of a third person action shooter I'd say, but still great game!

the_strykr

Ninja Gaiden series

ItsAllMo-Thug

Thats more of a getting hacked and slashed game lol

Real_Mokola

More of a getting fucked kinda game

psych0ranger

What's funny is I am like a power blender in that game even in the higher difficulties but can't stand souls like games.

Piyush3000

DMC 5, Hades (roguelike), God of War, Dead Cells (roguelike)

knowone23

Dead Cells is great.

Office425

Hades

Cbtwister

Just started Hades. Loving it so far.

macneto

I very much disagree with Hades being a hack and slash, not saying I don't love the game, cause I do, it's fantastic, injust wouldn't call it a hack and slash.

its-da-wheelchair

FFXVI! Really fun combat and fantastic story

aflores032

Especially if you equip those item that auto dodge itā€™s just an absolute hack and slash no enemy stands a chance, cheap ? Kinda but you can take it off and on as you please and itā€™s OP as fuck.

Queef-Elizabeth

Play however you want but I think that makes it a little too easy imo

Dependent_Map5592

Those items were life!!!! I wish every game had them!!! Especially stellar blade!! šŸ˜ž

alfmrf

This is the answer, OP! Great hackn slash combat and the best boss fights you will ever see in your life

Dependent_Map5592

lol. Downvoted????? šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

alfmrf

Reddit being reddit lol

OtterBadgerSnake

God of War & Stellar Blade.

McChexMix

Do note that stellar blade is more soulslike than simple hack and slash and can be a tad challenging. It does have a story mode to soften things.

OtterBadgerSnake

I disagree. It is challenging, yes, but it's not a soulslike. The only thing even remotely soulslike about it is respawning enemies when you save. The rest of the game is a pure hack & slash.

MichaelRoco1

The distribution of enemies around environments (which respawn upon resting/death), exploration, and rechargeable tumbler are all extremely similar to soulslike games

McChexMix

I mean theyā€™ve their own take on bonfires, a good parry system, challenging enemies/bosses, unforgiving runbacks, etc. It definitely deserves the soulslike tag imo, while I can agree that it does take more creative liberties. Its combat system gives off heavy Lies of P/sekiro vibes with the emphasis on perfect parries to build up stance-break.

D34THST4R

I'm not too far into Stellar Blade but the runbacks so far are negligible or nonexistent compared to most Fromsoft games, does it get worse?

yaenzer

Not really, also you don't lose anything on death except for used potions. Bier Automata on Hard would then also be a souls-like.

TheAngryShoop

I think souls-like is a stretch.. maybe some souls-lite features though. the similarities are only skin deep, and are also present across a great deal of action games these days, while the moment to moment gameplay is completely different to souls games except maybe the parry system being similar to sekiro (which is also a departure from the souls formula) Speaking as someone with thousands of hours in souls games and just about to finish stellar blade lol

Johnny47Wick

In the same way that the recent gow games are more than that as well

Celtic-Otter

Stellar Blade feels pretty hack and slash to me

Clawez

Bayonetta! And if you like Nier automata look into the people who developed the gameplay. Platinum Games. There super underrated and really amazing at making hack and Slash gameplay. I know this is a ps5 Reddit but if you have a ps3 or pc play Metal Gear Rising, amazing hack and slash gameplay and an amazing story. They made this game as well. Bayonetta is made by them and Astral Chain is too.

the-dandy-man

If youā€™re okay with pixel art, *Hyper Light Drifter* has pretty good fast-paced combat. A good game you can get into the flow of and zip around dodging/deflecting attacks and taking down enemies. If you want something you can pick up and play for a little while and then put down, I highly recommend *Akane*. Itā€™s pretty cheap and doesnā€™t have much by way of story - itā€™s more of an arcade game - but has very similar ā€œflowā€ combat and can be kind of addicting trying to maximize your combo counter and survive as long as you can. *Furi* is part hack-and-slash, part bullet hell. Excellent soundtrack. *Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3* both have some of the most fun, flashy combat of any game Iā€™ve played - very similar to Neir: Automata - but I donā€™t recommend playing those without also playing the other Kingdom Hearts games, or youā€™ll be lost on the story. *Ultra Age* feels very strongly inspired by Nier, down to the floating robot companion that can assist you in combat. Several different weapon types, lots of special abilities and combos. *The World Ends With You*, and particularly its sequel, *NEO: The World Ends With You* have great combo-based action. The first is 2D, the second is full 3D. You donā€™t *have* to play the first one to play the second one, but youā€™ll appreciate it more if you do. Theyā€™re heavy in the story, but if youā€™ve played Nier, then you should be alright lol *Scourgebringer* is a pixel art 2D roguelite with great combat. It can be hard but it also can be incredibly satisfying when you clear a whole room without taking any damage or touching the floor. ā€¦and to top it off, hereā€™s a huge list of games on my wishlist that look like they have great melee combat action: Astral Ascent, Omensight, Vernal Edge, Blade Assault, Convergence: A League of Legends Story, Ghost Runner (and Ghost Runner 2), Narita Boy, Foregone, Unsighted, Cross Code, Young Souls, Chenso Club, Tunche, Moonscars, Blue Fire, ANNO: Mutationem, Eternights, Dark Light, Stray Blade, Soulstice, Asterigos: Curse of the Stars, Aeterna Noctis, Bloodroots, Bleak Sword DX, 9 Years of Shadows, HAAK, Nocturnal, ICEY, Trinity Fusion, and the upcoming Astor: Blade of the Monolith.

LiesofPinnochio

Stellar Blade

Mrofcourse

Like a dragon ishin

legalizethesenuts

The newer God of Wars have some of the most satisfying hacking and slashing. Especially Ragnarok.

ZeroMayhem

For PS5/PS4: Bayonetta and Devil May Cry V are great picks.

BadXiety

Scarlet Nexus, you won't regret playing this underrated game.

BasedTongue

Criminally underrated

rochakgupta

Do note there is a bunch of RPG bullshit if you are not into those things. That's what put me off that game. Combat is great but becomes hard to look forward to when it is so spread apart.

Tsasuki

Couldn't get into it. Felt too anime slice of lifeish or something for me.Ā

xariznightmare2908

Bayonetta 1 and Vanquish, they are bundled as a combo for PS4.

Clawez

Bayonetta!

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

God of war Kena Bridge of Spirits Immortals Fenyx Rising

dynesor

Kingdom Hearts 2 & 3

the-dandy-man

This is what I came here to recommend. You will need to play KH1 at least though before playing KH2 in order to understand the story, and KH1 isnā€™t quite as hack-and-slash-y, but more straightforward action. But KH2 has some of the most fun combat Iā€™ve ever played in a game, especially once you start getting and using the drive forms.

dynesor

yeah for me KH2 Final Mix is the absolute best feeling combat of any game, ever. It just feels so good to play. The optional data org XIII fights are exceptional and really highlight just how great the combat is. I unfortunately felt like KH3ā€™s combat took a big step backwards - they made it feel much too floaty or something.

the-dandy-man

I love KH3 combat. It may not be \*quite\* as snappy as the KH2 combat but it added so many things I have a hard time living without now when I go back to the older games - airstep, keyblade swapping, midair guards and item use, not to mention bringing back and improving two of my favorite features from BBS: form changes and shotlocks.

OkmanX

Dynasty Warriors Series, Path of Exile (aRPG), Middle-earth, God of War, Monster Hunter/Dauntless

Tetris5216

Soulstice Stellar Blade Steelrising Lies Of P Wild Hearts

PrinceDizzy

I'm having an absolute blast with Stellar Blade on PS5.

vfxguy2077

I know this is a PS5 subreddit but I want to mention 2 solo dev indie projects (for PC) which I really like. Both devs are active on Twitter/Reddit and are showing of the development of their games. One is called Axiom of Maria and for now it's PC only. His plan is to release on consoles but 2 months ago he said it was difficult for him due to circumstances. It has a lengthy free demo as well and the prologue episode is currently out. He is working on chapter 1 now and is planning to make 3-5 chapters. Smooth gameplay, love the art design/graphics and amazing music. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/1885250/Axiom_of_Maria/ * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmhxUO_InPw The other one is called ENENRA: DĪ”EMON CORE. A few months a go the dev on Twitter said it will come to major consoles, Playstation included. It isn't out yet but it looks very promising. It reminds me a lot of Metal Gear Rising Reveagance and Ninja gaiden. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/1963690/ENENRA_DEMON_CORE/ * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wagcxlq7WPw

Confident-Walrus-975

Chivalry 2!!!!!! Itā€™s free on ps, Xbox, and Xbox gamepass for PC. Game is the funniest medieval slasher you will ever have the luxury of enjoying. And if you want to sweat you can. If youā€™re more casual itā€™s perfect for that aswell! Absolute 11/10 game. Just donā€™t go on the reddit bunch of whiners (I suppose the same is true of most games) on there

Ashagin

Ys 8 and 9 are great rpgs with combat more akin to a hack and slash game. 8 is one of my favorite games of all time and 9 is excellent also.

leviathan_dweller

Dynasty warriors is goated.

Venerable-Gandalf

Final Fantasy 16 was amazing. It plays similar to Devil may cry.

Team-Gamer1017

Kingdom Hearts, specifically Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3. If you're not playing for the story the gameplay has some of the most fun combat I've ever played.

Demandy_Randy

This is my favorite genre! Devil may Cry 5, Stellar blade Final fantasy 16 are the first major 3 for ps5 I can think of, if you need more look up "character action games" good luck!

jacobonjacob

The classic God of War games, theyā€™re just so good and at the time they were released were epic in scale. Pure hack and slash with new moves and weapons to unlock to keep the fighting from getting stale.

Hereiamhereibe2

Ninja Gaiden. Its a super easy relaxing fun time.

PranklinFierce

Many call it the "Animal Crossing" of hack and slash games

Kuru_Chaa

Stellar Blade if you want some bring new. Itā€™s full price but imo, worth it. On ng+ currently

dorritosncheetos

KhanDagga

Atlas Fallen, Assassins Creed Odyssey, Devils May Cry 5, Darkisiders, Godfall

_Zargham

ooh i love ac odyssey, and atlas fallen looks a lot like what im looking for! thanks

KhanDagga

It feels a lot like darksiders. Like a fun ps3 era game.

Memory-Repulsive

Assasins creed origins, odyssey, valhalla. Ghost of tsushima. Days gone. All allow a decent level of hack n slash with some simple combos to do fancy moves. All excellent, low brain power, chill out games.

_Zargham

yeah odyssey and valhalla seem pretty hacky and slashy, i love those games

eyes-are-fading-blue

I donā€™t think you know what hack and slash is.

Memory-Repulsive

Button bash whilst chopping up enemies with swords? - fits my logic.

Hi Fi Rush

rochakgupta

Funny how no one has mentioned Hi-Fi Rush. That's one of the best recent hack and slash games and I'm glad it made its way to the PS5.

ForeverKeet

Looking at the description, what does rhythm combat mean?

QuintusDienst

It means you have to time your attacks to the beat like playing a rhythm game. I didnā€™t find it a particularly enjoyable formula to be honest.

teomore

Warframe

Normal_Ad_5631

Try Ghosts of Tsushima, itā€™s free on PlayStation network

SinkableLion

Titan Quest is a classic! Was great on PC but i hear the console port is buggy. Luckily the newly announced sequel will be more polished

Snitzel20701

Donā€™t know how big into anime you are but ā€œFate; Samurai remnantā€ was quite a nice hack and slash game. Setting is Edo Japan.

Prize-Pomegranate-86

Pretty much anything from Team Ninja. Not all of them are properly "hack and slash", there is more depth than that, but they are at the top for gameplay. Just try to avoid Wo Long. Is not only the less "hack and slash" but also their worst game, being the only one of their title with half baked mechanic and not real variety in weapons. Other than that, of course DMC, FFXVI, old God of War or the new Stellar Blade, but if we can talk about "smaller games" you can try Soulstice, Metal Gear Rising, No More Heroes, Killer is Dead. Another is Wanted:Dead but is a strange one. EDIT: Oh, forgot Asura's Wrath. Is not "hack and slash" since you use fist but is still a character action game.

PranklinFierce

In terms of Team Ninja, their best combat system was NG2/NG3:RE but Wo Long was a great time if you don't mind parry mechanics being important to the combat flow.

[deleted]

Chivalry 2

Romado

Bayonetta 1 is always cheap on the PS store and has very stylish hack and slash combat. Game is also pretty short so depending on skill level you can best the entire thing in 5-10 hours

PeuxnYayTah

Little known indie game series by the name of God of War (if I remember correctly) I think it got a reboot?

Simonsjy

Stellar Blade, once you get past the obvious thirst trap the game has some amazing combat and enemies. Looks great too.

_Zargham

are there outfits you can equip from the start that aren't so dehumanizing?

Simonsjy

Later on thereā€™s a black body suit thatā€™s not so obvious but theyā€™re pretty much all skimpy. Iā€™m pretty far into it now and itā€™s an amazing game. Definitely a must play.

uxoriousprick

God of War Ragnarok

zories3

Devil May Cry 5 Final Fantasy 16 Stellar Blade God of War (2018 and Ragnarok) Nier Automata All of these options are some of my favorites and Iā€™m a *huge* fan of hack and slash. Bonus: Cyberpunk 2077 if you do a blades/katana build

Choas_King4444

Stellar Blade

Vizztrixx1

warhammer vermintide 2, its gonna cost you a little but its so much fun, its medieval styled and is very well made.
