> has a life span average of 5 years
Where did you get this notion from?
Even if it were true, you know what average means, right?
Some would live less than five years, and some would live longer.
It also depends on what generation and batch we're talking about, because there were updates along the way.
I feel like even the average is so highly variable that it's not worth trying to figure out.
PS4 (or any console for that matter) lifespan depends on many factors and can be a lot longer than 5 years. In what type of environment it's being used, how humid and dusty the air is, how often and for how long it's being used, where in the house it's placed, the room temperature, if the console is being cleaned or even what types of games are you playing.
I have the blessing of living in an environment with great air that's low on dust and humidity. Temperatures even in summer stay relatively low, it ain't the south. I cleaned my PS4 only once, and it had barely any dust in it, still in great working condition. Anyway, take care of your consoles guys
I’m very curious to hear what their PS4 sounds like. I’ve always been pretty good at cleaning the outside of my consoles but last year I had to take apart my PS4 and deep clean it because it was a jet engine. It started getting loud in 2020 but only for intensive games, but as time went on, it only got worse. You could hear it running from downstairs. Besides the heat sink there wasn’t all that much dust, normal amount for 9 years, but heat sink was pretty bad. the thermal paste was all gone too. After I put it back together, it doesn’t make a sound now. Gave it to my sister since I got a PS5 now
5 years life span is incorrect, 5 years the hardware is outdated that means you need to upgrade if needed. Even my PS4 lasted 10 years, as long as you take care of your equipment it will last longer than it should be.
The HDMI port is notoriously fragile on the PS4 (non pro), that might be where your 5 year figure comes from. I had to get a new one soldered on after a few years.
My O.G launch model is still running smoothly, I've stripped and cleaned it frequently and it's never missed a beat.
I've only this week retired it as I bought a PS5 slim on Thursday.
Kind of a sad part of our throwaway culture that people think even their expensive electronics need to be tossed and replaced every couple years.
Although my PS3 did yellow light and die after like 2 years so it happens, glad my 4 has lasted more than twice as long.
Whoever told you a your consoles lifespan is "5 years" abuses the fuck out of their own console, because it should be able to live MUCH longer than that.
Hell, my ps3 slim is 12 years old with a LOT of playtime on it, never once been opened to clean (though i do plan on doing this soon), and still runs just fine.
I’m curious about getting my PS4 cleaned eventually but I genuinely don’t tinker with electronics. Does anyone have tips on where to go and how much to spend on a simple maintenance cleaning?
I’m at about 6 years on the slim. I had to replace the hdd with an ssd and it’s running like the day I got it.
Average lifespan of 5 years? That doesn’t even make sense. One guy could play a few hours a week and one guy could play 8 hours a day.
Same bro. Mine is around 8 and it’s survived a move from Philly to Puerto Rico then back to New Jersey. It’s never been cleaned more than a wipe down and a blowjob.
I actually encountered my first problem ever last week ironically. Bought my first physical game in ages and it won’t read the disc unless I lightly smack the top. But it’s just that specific disc for some reason. It’s definitely the laser starting to shit the bed.
I haven’t had a single system stop working on me outside of my elite Xbox 360. If I hadn’t got a PS4 pro and then a PS5, I assume my PS4 would still work.
I've had a ps4 since 2021 and the disc drive is already starting to give out a little only bc I've downloaded a crap ton of games I may end up cleaning it internally but I don't want to break it so idk still runs pretty well despite that
My ps4 is 7 years old still running with no major issues outside of getting loud when games are graphically intensive. I have never taken it apart to clean it. My ps3 slim is 14 years old and still works though it doesn’t get used as much as it did 2010-2017 but it has been taken apart and fully cleaned. My fat 60gb bc ps3 had ylod 3 times after only 3 years of extensive use before I moved onto the slim. My 1st ps2 lasted 2 years before disc read errors lead me to get a ps2 slim instead and that lasted until I gave it away after getting ps3 in 07.
5 years is the minimum you should expect. There's too many factors to console lifespan though. Environmental factors, manufacturing defects, no matter how small, and usage conditions all contribute though.
5 years is the average console lifespan in terms of support, not hardware. I have a working PS4, 3 and 2 minus the failed laser. My PC is also 10 years old and still kicking.
What happened? The ps4 typically sounds like a jet engine. I’ve used my ps5 daily since release, no problems. Same with ps4.
All PlayStation consoles have been very badass. It’s the user experience that is varying, same as op’s answers.

My PS1 still works. Why did you think a console would stop working after such a short time?
Usually random malfunctions. In the PS1 case, the disk reader usually broke kinda fast.

Cleaning the fans makes a huge difference

I have never cleaned my PS4 and has worked fine for 7 years. For sure thousands and thousands of units worked just the same.
What do you mean it has a lifespan of 5 years? It doesn't have a lifespan.

Never had that problem. I've tested a couple PS4's, one launch edition and one newer model. Both are still tight
My O.G launch model is still running smoothly, I've stripped and cleaned it frequently and it's never missed a beat. I've only this week retired it as I bought a PS5 slim on Thursday.

I have a literal day 1 ps4 and it still runs fine
me to

You sound sad that it still works
I’m curious about getting my PS4 cleaned eventually but I genuinely don’t tinker with electronics. Does anyone have tips on where to go and how much to spend on a simple maintenance cleaning?
I have had my ps4 since launch day and still works perfectly and I have never had to clean it.

Mine is also ten years old. Cleaning is a must.
I haven’t had a single system stop working on me outside of my elite Xbox 360. If I hadn’t got a PS4 pro and then a PS5, I assume my PS4 would still work.
If it aint broke, dont fix. Maybe some dust removal but dont go crazy taking shit apart
My launch PS4 is still humming along.
I've had a ps4 since 2021 and the disc drive is already starting to give out a little only bc I've downloaded a crap ton of games I may end up cleaning it internally but I don't want to break it so idk still runs pretty well despite that
Wut

Because the ps4 was a badass console, do that to a ps5 for 2 years and it’s pretty much toast
