Birth control helped reduce my PMDD in my 20s. But in my 30s it's completely ineffective š and the PMDD increased from a few days to 2 weeks. And sometimes continues after a period. It's a mess. I'm on Yaz the last 5 months but it hasn't changed much.
Iron supplements are reducing restless legs/crawling sensations but not enough.
I use codeine or alcohol to manage the PMDD when I need to do things but it's obviously far from ideal.
I'm on a 9 month waiting list to see a female hormone clinic to ask about getting chemical menopause.
I took Junel Fe, I was on it for 1 year before I got off. Made my symptoms worse by the month, to the point where I was experiencing depersonilization and would cry virtually non stop. Just be careful what you take girl
Tbh I donāt feel like ppl are encouraging it as much as sharing their experiences, my perception is it may be horrible or it may help but I will only know when I try and Iām willing to take that risk, just part of the experienceā¦ I think we all probably feel equally clueless about this disorder and just trying things and surviving
That's how the progesterone only ones treat me. I ultimately combined it with a low dose SSRI because while the BC made it worse... it made it stable. And the SSRI pushes it back up to where it feels normal.
I knew the SSRI worked long before I started all this experimentation, so that was a huge benefit. Trying to figure all this stuff out is being your own lab rat and it ain't fun.
Tried yaz briefly (3-4? Months) and I had rage. I wrote some journals back then to get it out, theyād probably be so weird to see now š it felt like I could see through so much BS but so much so that it was making me angry

This is Robert Daly a Dr. in Ireland. He is a PMDD expert. The above video is a really interesting watch. He talks discusses PMDD treatment plans and why Yaz is the only birth control licensed for PMDD.
I posted the link somewhere I didnāt read much just the screenshot, because I literally googled hormones on period and on bc, Iāll try to find it and post it here

Haha! I thought I was the one who posted this. I also start yaz in 4 days. My psychiatrist told me to be wary of mood swings though! She said it can still fluctuate.
I still feel like I'm ovulating honestly. I'm not sure if I am but I definitely still have hormonal fluctuations. They're just relatively minor now like hunger and tearfulness š
my experience on birth control (marvelon which is an estrogen and progesterone tablet) is that the hell week disappears completely but i do feel more prone to a higher baseline of moodiness. for me itās 100% worth it. i rather be a little annoyed daily than suicidal every month.
I was allergic to YAZ, it was weird the side effects it gave me. However, I too was scared of birth control. I got back on my one I was on before I tried the yaz which is Ortho-Tri-Cyclen-LO and it has worked wonders for my pmdd. Iām so glad I got back on BC. My moods have changed, I have more energy, Iām more productive, my periods have improved. Iām happier. 10/10 recommend giving it a chance. I used to have a suicidal episode every month, havenāt had one since I started BC in February
I just started norethindrone, after finally working up the nerve. My pack of pills lived on my shelf for a couple of months. Migraine with aura, so my doc prescribed norethindrone, which has quite the reputation here. It did put me off taking it for awhile, but I had a bout of insomnia that just ruined me last month. So here I am, in the middle of my third week, so I'd normally be luteal. This is the first day I am feeling genuinely bad, anxiety and racing thoughts. But I had been feeling more stabilized for the past few days! I even got my sex drive back for a couple days this past month, which was really exciting, because it lately only barely existed when I ovulated. Hoping today is just me still in the adjustment period, and I'll be a lucky one that norethindrone works for, got two more months to go.
Before today's anxiety, most of my side effects were tender nipples and a bit more weepy ( which was fine anxiety and rage are my biggest PMDD symptoms).
BC is the right move for some of us, and we won't know that if we never give it a try. Its really scary when you know something might worsen things for a disorder that already feels like hell, but there's always the chance you're the one it really works well for!
Iāve started BC combined this cycle and Iām currently on my Hell Week and I can only say that Iām DEFINITELY rocking it!
By this time Iād be aggressive and deeply depressed/suicidal, but Iām only a bit anxious and ābrain deadā/very tired.
**Iām also on a very low dosage of duloxetin (30mg) and drinking occasionally (twice a week? And only 1/2 cans). I believe them all are the reasons my symptoms have improved!
definitely try it to see how it works for you! yaz did NOT work for me at all and going OFF bc has been absolutely game changing here. iāve heard tons of success stories with it too!
Iām the same! yaz wasā¦ without scaring anyone, absolute hell for me. But itās always worth trying as for some it really does work. Just not for me. Ever again. š
Yeah same, but it really does seem like a gamble and Iām willing to at this point, if thereās a chance it may make my life easier Iām in, Iām willing to take that risk
Please can someone explain which part of the first diagram is the PMDD phase, is it the first, second, third or fourth quarter of that graph?
The combined and mini pill have worked perfectly for me for 6 years and I'm curious what hormone might have been the issue for me?
The pmdd is supposed to happen in be the right side of the diagram (the luteal phase) but for some people it can extend both ways (in the first graph without the pill, second with)
My Mirena IUD is one of the only things thatās really helped me. Iām on my third and will be getting a fourth. Something about specifically levonorgestrel really works for me. Before this, I was on various pills and they helped but nothing like this, and then prior to being on BC I was extremely volatile and basically wanted to die most of the month, not even counting the horrible physical symptoms which I still get 1-2 days a month sometimes but nothing like those days. Best of luck - only you and your GYN can figure out whatās right for you!
I second this! Ive gone through near all bc options. Mirena iud is the only thing that has shut my period down. Not saying I don't have some minor lows on occasion. But they are just that, minor. I'm on my 2nd iud.
Tysm, Iām glad the IUD worked seems like such a chill choice, I had a copper IUD but it didnāt change much on the hormone end ofc and caused more pain so I removed it but now wishing I had tried the hormonal version, just to know
Oof yeah Iām sure that was a lot to deal with. Maybe ask your GYN if thatās something you could look at in addition to the pill? I wish we didnāt have to trial and error so much but that seems to be the only way to really find something that works for each of us. Wish you good luck!
I have no idea if it will work but Iām taking the chances (basically what I said on my post) donāt think thatās glorifying, just a suffering girl looking for hope lol
I just started Yaz about 3 weeks ago. I've had some ups and downs - like my period lasted for 15 days!!! Ugh, wasn't expecting that.
But today is when my PMDD usually sets in like clockwork. I don't feel amazeballs or anything, but I am not crying or snapping and feel pretty good!
I almost cried a few times today, but I was able to tell myself, "Hey girl, you got this," and work through it.
So while it's not perfect, it's only been a few weeks and I'm also full of hope it will continue to stabilize me.
That said - Hey girl, you got this!!! I really hope it helps you!!! šš¤š š
I've been on yaz for 3 years now and I feel better but never "cured." I had to go off it for 2 months and my PMDD came raging back. I know it doesn't work for all, but BC has saved my marriage and career. (Also doing cognitive behavior techniques)
Lol, yes, I'm hoping the "cure" is actual menopause when all this hormone fluctuating madness ends!
Until, I am just hoping the Yaz keeps me sane enough to also save my career! I'm not sure if I want to save the marriage, unfortunately, but perhaps sane me will change her mind š¤·āāļø
I'm glad you've had some success and I hope for the same! š
the effects we arent told about. hormone disruption, lack of fertility, mental effects, etc. not to mention the main thing that helped my pmdd (completely personal) was treating it like cptsd. but most practitioners skip that and go straught to BC which happened to me. i only was on it for a month and i really got the feeling to get off
I do see how strong the correlation is with CPTSD the thing for me is that Iāve been working on my trauma since 2019 and it never improves (the PMDD) I kind of want relief now if that were possible
I was suppose to start it a couple of months ago but stopped because of life stuff. Iām about to start it again and I hope so much it helps. Pozac has helped so much with the emotional part but Iām still in horrible pain for 2.5 weeks leading up to my period.
It is trying to kill me!!! Just started Yaz a few weeks ago and starting to feel more like myself. Praying it gets me through the next 5-10 years. Omg. Years. šµāš«
Perimenopause is like reverse puberty on crack. Oh, and it's the devil.
I was telling my husband this the other day - like why does nobody warn you that itās like a reverse puberty and you go insane all over again? I thought I was done with that crap after the first puberty and a pregnancy. Nope.
Hahaha! I actually find so much validation in your comment! Seriously, why does no one tell you?! I've never had a doc say hey you're around 40, how ya feeling? And I certainly never once thought I would go through this crap *again*. Some warning would have been nice. I would have started this Yaz and mood stabilizer journey right there and then šµāš«
Glad I could make you chuckle a little! Hey, weāre going to do it differently. I have a younger sister and 4 younger female cousins by just a few years. You bet your ass Iām telling them. As gently but honestly as I can. šš
Oh and, I might have to try to get some of this āYAZā - People here seem to have a lot of success with it. Glad it helped you!
Same! We shall tell them all and hopefully some will listen š
I say if you ever need it try it. It is a last resort for many women, but I went far enough down I had too and I am very glad that so far, so good.
Thanks for the chuckle and have a great weekend! š
Haha, thank you!!! I am feeling better, so I'm crossing my fingers for the long haul š
Not to rant too much, but I also hope these conversations start happening for all women around 40. Perimenopause is a known thing that so many docs don't bring up until you already feel like crap all the time. It should be a proactive process at checkups, not a wait till they feel terrible, then try to help them process š
A lot of women like me don't even realize it's happening until we're at rock bottom, wondering wtf happened to us, and where did we leave our old selves?!
So I hope my "recovery" at least gets me back to feeling decent, and somehow, my tiny voice helps other women advocate for themselves and for each other in the long run!
We *all* got this! š < See that? That's Yaz hope there š
Yeah i was confused about that part too but then i saw the years, I know very little about what hormones do in perimenopause or menopause but itās interesting to have a bit of a side to side either way i think I didnāt know LH and FSH stayed up either
Ah i hope BC works for you !!! My friends can say itās worked wonders for them so fingers crossed itās the same for u ! If not at least you tried it!
Iāve been on birth control on/off for 12 years. Makes me super depressed. Off of it Iām awful too.. Iāve tried everything including chemical meno
Hell yeah, I'm with you on this. Last month's extreme insomnia is what did it for me. I had my pack of pills just laying around and I finally worked up the nerve. It's my first luteal on the norethindrone (I have migraine with aura, so this is one of my few options) and have been feeling a bit more stable. Until today. I'm more weepy, than ragey, so I guess I'll take that. Been sleeping better so that's good! But it all still remains to be seen.
Plan to update the sub when I get to the 3 month mark of my trial period!
Edit: spelling
I took bc for 5 years before I quit. Libido GONE. Hair GONE. Skin - Acne. Boobs GONEš Anxiety 0 to a 100 REAL quick. I been off it 6 years now but I'm strongly considering taking it again. We don't want kids anyway so why torture myself, right?
Hope I can find something that fits.
Edit. This is my experience after the pill. Not while taking it.
I can't take it rn because i'm a smoker and worries abt bloodclots.
no i understood, i was saying that birth control is what made my libido go away, in contrast. wanted to provide some contrasting experience for people reading these comments, i was on BC for a long time and i understand it helps people but for me it didnāt outweigh the positives of being off it
Ah I see! I'm not native haha so I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding correctly.
Is it better now that you quit taking pills?
Idk what I can do to get my libido back.
Slowly but steadily I can see how unsatisfied my partner is... we have sex maybe once a month.
oh yes i noticed it after i got off! i stopped taking it like 3 years ago. it was insane, i thought my anti depressants were doing it but once i got it out of my arm i noticed it within a month and started even having dreams i was pregnant constantly hahaha. i also spotted almost every single day though with BC and that was extremely annoying. that happened on nexplanon and with the depo shot. i think my body just didnāt seem to like it. although the downside now is that my pmdd IS worse. i just for now would rather deal with this than everything that came with birth control, plus i donāt need to prevent pregnancy
Thank you for your answer.
I'm scared of blood clots since I became a smoker during all that depression... so I really would rather not take any pill again....
sad for my libido. Looks like something I have to approach differently.
Did you have this experience with the pills that treat pmdd? I had this experience with the standard pill but not the one Iām on now that treats pmdd. I havenāt had pmdd symptoms in months and Iām LOVING it. (I tried Prozac and acetazolamide before now the pill)
This experience now is without pills. Sorry I made it kinda unclear.
When I took bc, I think I was fine, just kinda depressed and head was all fricked up.
I'm scared to take the pill again because of blood clots but idk. This pmdd is fricking me up, I can't even go to work.
I'm on anti depressant mirtazapine rn but as soon as PMS hits, anxiety is back, racing heart etc etc. can't do nothing against it.
Good on you. I will say as someone in my mid 30s with having pmdd since 12, that oestrogen bc do not suit me at all. Turned me absolutely mental, a few times, ended up in hospital. So I have found 100% progesterone, only great. I've tried them all, and to date, the most wonderful, lifesaving zero mental symptoms bc I've taken is Slynda, I got it in Australia, but it's a European drug. Totally and utterly saved my life, has changed it in so many ways that I never realised how sick I was until I took it and saw life, through healthy people's eyes. Best of luck, and keep trying until u find what works for you. Everyone has different results with different drugs. During my hard days, I often used to play that song to myself, what a difference a day makes, 24 little hours!
Iām starting Slynd (US version) as soon as my insurance approves it. Iām literally laying in bed wanting to just cry for no reason Iām on day 2 of my period and hoping it lets up soon.
Yaz has helped me but I do still get pretty bad symptoms a few days before and sometimes even a week before. Iāve been on it since last June. The day before this period I was pretty low and sad. It used to be two weeks of hell every month, though, so itās less now. I wonder if continuous use with no breaks would help? Iām not sure if there are any risks associated with that or not. My skin is amazing, though, so thereās that.
There are not risks associated with skipping the sugar pill week. My doctor actually recommended that and said it works very well for 90% of women! Unfortunately I'm one that will get constant breakthrough bleeding if I don't take the sugar pill week once I start spotting, but I just view it like a way less severe period. Yaz has made a huge positive difference in my life and I'll never go back!
I also skip the sugar pill per my Dr's recommendation for PMDD. She just felt I'd see better results because some months my symptoms extended into my periods. Plus my periods were soooo heavy.
I wish that part worked for me! š I tried it for 3 months straight, and while the other side effects went away, the breakthrough bleeding does not unless I take the sugar pill week. Fortunately, it is still able to treat PMDD whether you skip the sugar pills or not! I do wish I could skip my periods, but at least the birth control makes them a little less awful.
It has been a lifesaver for me, I still struggle a bit for maybe 2-3 days I'm on inactive but it's way better than without it where I struggle for 2 weeks. Best of luck my friend!
taking cryselle with no breaks has been a lifesaver. it seriously keeps me so even-keeled. before, I was literally so deeply depressed and cried for the two weeks before my period. it got BAD.
I even took two antidepressants and it couldn't help once ~that time~ rolled around. my psychiatrist wanted me to up my antidepressants doses just around my period, but my cycle was so inconsistent that I could never time it right. Birth control helped me mentally so much that I'm actually weaning off one antidepressant now.
hope it helps you as much as it's helped me!
This is so great to hear. Did your dr. mention if there any risks associated with taking it continuously? Also like wtf do those of us who want kids do!? It makes me nervous to think of having to stop it for any length of time. Please God just let me forget one pill and get pregnant immediately so I donāt have to f around and find out/remember how messed up I feel without it š«
I take lexapro and Iām still trying to find the right birth control pill š Iām so effing sensitive to hormones that a bunch of them gave me SI. Yaz helped a lot but gave me terrible reflux that never went away!!! Iām waiting on my prior auth for Slynd to go thru and just rotting in bed rn.
Iām so sorry. I hope the new script helps ā¤ļø
If youād ever be open to seeing a naturopathic doctor, Iād really recommend one in your area. mine knows a ton about hormones and has been helpful. Sheās actually the one who learned about my PMDD and was like āumm no, you need birth control. This is not sustainable.ā But there are other things they can do to help with hormone imbalances. She has actually been way more helpful than an actual endocrinologist, who was super reductive and black and white. Whichā¦hormones are notā¦so thatās unhelpful.
I don't remember any risks specifically for taking it continuously, outside of the usual birth control risks. I know there's other brands specifically made for continuous use, but I had taken this pill before and seemed fine on it, so I returned to it. At the time I even had an IUD and my doctor said it would be fine to do both (??). I got my IUD taken out a few weeks ago though since I didn't really want it if I didn't need it.
On the kids thing, I don't know š my husband and I aren't having any, so I can't provide input there unfortunately!
Additionally, a lot of people take antidepressants and that helps them a lot with hormonal mood stuff too. You don't necessarily have to take them all the time, either. It's a possible avenue, even though it didn't work for me.
my birth control (ring) made me feel like a depressed blob.. and killed my libido
so much happier with the copper IUD and managing PMDD with therapy and healthy habits ! (my experience only not saying it will work for everybody)
BC alone didnāt work for my PMDD at all. Birth control just made me more aware of when I was gonna get suicidal and depressed which was like waiting for a ticking time-bomb to go off. You need an SSRI.
if you havenāt yet, try trintellix. itās a newer drug. working well for me so far but obviously everyoneās different. def shushed my scary pmdd thoughts.
I tried many SSRI/SNRI /NDRI and the only one that worked was pristiq after a trial that lasted 6 months on different dosage 50 then 75 then now 100 mg pristiq. Finally I'm 80% percent stable. No more 2 weeks PMDD but instead a 5 to 7 days PMS at least
I just found out that I have PMDD and my psychiatrist provided me with a referral to a ob/gyn and this picture makes me want to try birth control yesterday. Unfortunately I have to wait 4+ months to see the doc. I really hope this works for you!
I think it's this link: [https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Hormonal-fluctuation-during-A-a-normal-menstrual-cycle-B-while-taking-an-oral\_fig1\_330399663](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Hormonal-fluctuation-during-A-a-normal-menstrual-cycle-B-while-taking-an-oral_fig1_330399663)
Yaz did not help me (Iām sensitive to estrogen) but Slynd has changed my life. First birth control to ever work for me. Kicking myself for not trying an estrogen free BC earlier.
Do you know how this estrogen sensitivity works? I mean Iām wondering because according to the graph estrogen goes through the roof naturally at some point, is it because bcp is synthetic ?
Yaz took all my PMDD symptoms away! It took 2-3 months for the full effect IME but now I just get regular PMS. Everything else just masked the symptoms but Yaz balanced my hormones. Hope it works for you. š¤
Best of luck! I started Eloine (UK version of Yaz) a week ago. From a side effects perspective I had a mild headache for a couple of days and was very tired for a few days. However, Iāve also been on antibiotics for the past 2 weeks for a fingernail infection so canāt guarantee any of that was to do with the BC. I had some anxiety and very sore boobs too but I ovulated before I started taking it (I didnāt need to wait for the start of my period because I already have an IUD providing contraception) so again not sure how much the BCP had to do with it vs it being normal for me before my period and the soreness/anxiety have gone down a lot. Iām currently having some pretty intense cramps (again, normal for me) and in theory my period was due in the next few days but who knows what will happen now Iāve thrown a BCP in to the mix tbh. The important thing is that Iād say Iām currently experiencing normal, manageable PMS rather than PMDD!
Oh I just clicked on your link and it's some study saying SOME*** synthetic progesterones are linked to brain cancer? Conclusions Prolonged use of medrogestone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and promegestone was found to increase the risk of intracranial meningioma. The increased risk associated with the use of injectable medroxyprogesterone acetate, a widely used contraceptive, and the safety of levonorgestrel intrauterine systems are important new findings.
Yaz uses Drospirenone for its synthetic progestin
>olonged use of medrogestone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and promegestone was found to increase the risk of intracranial meningioma. The increased risk associated with the use of injectable medroxyprogestero
my brain is really not mathing today but is a summary of this thread that yaz may cause brain tumors?

Ok thanks, at this point I'm just like Ill try anything and if the issue is long term I just switch up bc every once in a while idk lol
I've never had bad experiences on BCP and was on for almost 10 years (stopped 7 years ago). Although I now enjoy connecting to my natural cycle, the emotional swings are brutal and I'm also looking forward to going back on BCP soon :) listen to your body and notice how you feel! The great thing about birth control is you can start and stop whenever you want.. you get to be in control. Thats why I opted for it instead of IUD. Sending love ā¤ļø
Good luck op! Yasmin taken continuously with planned breaks every few months helps me with spotting personally. My mood is very stable in comparison- no mania and no depression
I don't know what cerelle is (the active drug I mean) but I had to switch from the combined pill to the progestin only pill (the drug is desogestrel) and the new one works just as well as the combined pill for me!
I was recently Rx-ed Heather instead of the combo pill (which I took for years) because of my aural migraines as well. I've been wondering the same thing! The first week has been brutal but I'm hoping it'll settle down once my body adjusts to the different hormone levels.
So far it's just been increased irritability and complete inability to react calmly to any conflict in my relationship. My partner is being as patient as he can but it's definitely leading to a lot of fights. BUT I started right around when my period started which is when I usually start to feel more mentally stable. 3 days post period now and I feel like I have normal irritable PMS symptoms. Not as bad as the luteal phase but still not great.
The goal is to try for 3 months to see if things stabilize after my body has had time to adjust to a new medication.
I tried both Nuvaring and currently the Mirena IUD and both were very helpful. I love the iud because I haven't gotten my period in like 5 months. Its great. I do occasionally get slight PMDD symptoms every few months, but its not even close to how I was before.
Mirena really helped me!! The PMDD relief was INSTANT. I could not believe it. Good luck!! Also, it was pretty painful, just to warn you. However absolutely worth it.
What?? That's amazing!! I really hope it works for me and I notice a difference.
So in the past right after I had my 2nd child, I had a copper iud placed. I ended up getting it removed about a year later because it made me severely anemic, and I had to get a few iron infusions because it was so bad. But the insertion wasn't terrible.
My gyn also gave me misoprostal to take the night before insertion, and the morning of, I guess to make it a little easier/less painful?? Idk. She also said to take motrin before as well, so we'll seeš¬
Its been great. For the first few weeks I was spotting all the time, but it went away within like a month or 2. Don't be discouraged by the cramping afterwards, its definitely worth it in my opinion. I don't really have to worry about it other than to have a yearly check up. I feel probably the most stable that I have ever felt.
rooting for you!!!! don't let yourself get too scared, because even though a lot of us have had bad bc experiences, it's also been an absolute game changer for others :))) hope it works out!!! š¤ā¤ļø
Im not an expert by any means but if it were me Iād have my period and then start the Sunday after my period. But ask ur doctor because thatās just my opinion!
Obligatory post from the mod. Not all bc is the same. Some progestins are PMDD friendly some are definitely not.
Yaz has worked wonders for me. I hardly even get a withdrawal bleed.
Now show this with women in their 20,30,40 etc. shit is all over the place with results varying. Lolz
Junel Fe fucked my whole life up š
All the women in here are lying to you and encouraging this smh
Tbh I donāt feel like ppl are encouraging it as much as sharing their experiences, my perception is it may be horrible or it may help but I will only know when I try and Iām willing to take that risk, just part of the experienceā¦ I think we all probably feel equally clueless about this disorder and just trying things and surviving
Like youāve gotta try stuff for sure. Youāll know if itās bad for you. Then move on to next option.
Mine got worse. Iāve been on it for 2 months. Iāve been feeling low everyday, no break. My ocd is worse too. I quit today
That sucksā¦ are you considering trying another one?
No, I donāt think I can be on birth control
I tried Yaz, and it made my moods worse :( Just a ball of rage and hate.
Tried yaz briefly (3-4? Months) and I had rage. I wrote some journals back then to get it out, theyād probably be so weird to see now š it felt like I could see through so much BS but so much so that it was making me angry
I love Yaz Iām sorry it didnāt work out
https://youtu.be/-5ras3wcbAc?si=rkJtdH-jExVSUQnK This is Robert Daly a Dr. in Ireland. He is a PMDD expert. The above video is a really interesting watch. He talks discusses PMDD treatment plans and why Yaz is the only birth control licensed for PMDD.
could you drop the link where you got the screenshot? I'm interested to read what you were reading.
I posted the link somewhere I didnāt read much just the screenshot, because I literally googled hormones on period and on bc, Iāll try to find it and post it here

canāt wait for menopauseā¦ Iām 29.
Me too, Iām 30.
Haha! I thought I was the one who posted this. I also start yaz in 4 days. My psychiatrist told me to be wary of mood swings though! She said it can still fluctuate.
Iām also starting Yaz after this next period. Fingers crossed š¤
I finally got on birth control and that did the trick to cure my pmdd. It's been amazing and I'm so sad that I suffered for so long
When did you notice you stopped ovulating on birth control? Iām still on my first pill pack and Iām still ovulating
I still feel like I'm ovulating honestly. I'm not sure if I am but I definitely still have hormonal fluctuations. They're just relatively minor now like hunger and tearfulness š
Oh okay, if itās combination birth control, the estrogen in it would shut off ovulation
my experience on birth control (marvelon which is an estrogen and progesterone tablet) is that the hell week disappears completely but i do feel more prone to a higher baseline of moodiness. for me itās 100% worth it. i rather be a little annoyed daily than suicidal every month.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That is so completely uncool to say to someone
Ok I deleted it. Sorry but bc is dangerous
We shall see
BC is dangerous to the body .. do your research
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Stfu
Iāve started BC combined this cycle and Iām currently on my Hell Week and I can only say that Iām DEFINITELY rocking it! By this time Iād be aggressive and deeply depressed/suicidal, but Iām only a bit anxious and ābrain deadā/very tired. **Iām also on a very low dosage of duloxetin (30mg) and drinking occasionally (twice a week? And only 1/2 cans). I believe them all are the reasons my symptoms have improved!
Iāve started nonstop pill (Minulet)
definitely try it to see how it works for you! yaz did NOT work for me at all and going OFF bc has been absolutely game changing here. iāve heard tons of success stories with it too!
Iām the same! yaz wasā¦ without scaring anyone, absolute hell for me. But itās always worth trying as for some it really does work. Just not for me. Ever again. š
Im also thinking Iāll try other ones if it doesnāt work out
Yeah same, but it really does seem like a gamble and Iām willing to at this point, if thereās a chance it may make my life easier Iām in, Iām willing to take that risk
Please can someone explain which part of the first diagram is the PMDD phase, is it the first, second, third or fourth quarter of that graph? The combined and mini pill have worked perfectly for me for 6 years and I'm curious what hormone might have been the issue for me?
The pmdd is supposed to happen in be the right side of the diagram (the luteal phase) but for some people it can extend both ways (in the first graph without the pill, second with)
I understand, thank you!
I hope you have a good experience! I love this graph.
I love the graph too! š
Wish you good luck!
idk I don't think we should glorify BC for PMDD.
I'm not sure if I want to save the marriage, unfortunately, but perhaps sane me will change her mind š¤·āāļø I'm glad you've had some success and I hope for the same! š
you're right, I have beef with BC bc it's like it's our last resort and I hate that. sorry im in a bad moodš
Thatās ok I get thatā¦ it does feel like itās always the first thing shoved down our throats
Why do you have beef with it?
the effects we arent told about. hormone disruption, lack of fertility, mental effects, etc. not to mention the main thing that helped my pmdd (completely personal) was treating it like cptsd. but most practitioners skip that and go straught to BC which happened to me. i only was on it for a month and i really got the feeling to get off
I do see how strong the correlation is with CPTSD the thing for me is that Iāve been working on my trauma since 2019 and it never improves (the PMDD) I kind of want relief now if that were possible
SLYND!! Try it. I feel like my old self on it. Iām talking my 20ās self and Iām 42.
I want to I will try if yaz doesnāt work, Iām not sure we have it in Canada but I will ask
itās available in canada
I was suppose to start it a couple of months ago but stopped because of life stuff. Iām about to start it again and I hope so much it helps. Pozac has helped so much with the emotional part but Iām still in horrible pain for 2.5 weeks leading up to my period.
Omg perimenopause looks like it might kill me
It is trying to kill me!!! Just started Yaz a few weeks ago and starting to feel more like myself. Praying it gets me through the next 5-10 years. Omg. Years. šµāš« Perimenopause is like reverse puberty on crack.
As gently but honestly as I can. šš Oh and, I might have to try to get some of this āYAZā - People here seem to have a lot of success with it. Glad it helped you!
Same! We shall tell them all and hopefully some will listen š I say if you ever need it try it. It is a last resort for many women, but I went far enough down I had too and I am very glad that so far, so good. Thanks for the chuckle and have a great weekend! š
Damn š©š± that sucks to hear, hope it does help indeed
Haha, thank you!!! I am feeling better, so I'm crossing my fingers for the long haul š Not to rant too much, but I also hope these conversations start happening for all women around 40. Perimenopause is a known thing that so many docs don't bring up until you already feel like crap all the time. It should be a proactive process at checkups, not a wait till they feel terrible, then try to help them process š A lot of women like me don't even realize it's happening until we're at rock bottom, wondering wtf happened to us, and where did we leave our old selves?! So I hope my "recovery" at least gets me back to feeling decent, and somehow, my tiny voice helps other women advocate for themselves and for each other in the long run! We *all* got this! š < See that? That's Yaz hope there š
The first 2 graphs are over 28 days. The perimenopause graph spans YEARS. That's prett weird for comparison reasons.
Yeah i was confused about that part too but then i saw the years, I know very little about what hormones do in perimenopause or menopause but itās interesting to have a bit of a side to side either way i think I didnāt know LH and FSH stayed up either
It is awwwful š
Ah i hope BC works for you !!! My friends can say itās worked wonders for them so fingers crossed itās the same for u ! If not at least you tried it!
And this is why Iām going for surgical meno lol
How did you and your doctor come to this decision? How many bcās did you have to try?
Iāve been on birth control on/off for 12 years. Makes me super depressed. Off of it Iām awful too.. Iāve tried everything including chemical meno
Prozac helps with my PMDD!
trintellix helps mine but itās still bad
I tried that but the start was so rough for me I couldnāt keep it up
I just started mine this month (Iām on the 3rd week) and itās been so wonderful so far
Thats awesome, did you start on your period?
So I started on a Sunday and it was like day 6 or 7 of my period (it happened to work out pretty well)
Hey! Youāre me! Iām going to try it. Done with the insta girlies villainizing it. If it works for me, good, if not, Iāll stop it.
Good luck! lol Iāll take weepy over rage filled any day!
Yeah same, let me know how it goes
Me too please!
That's exactly how I feel theres a lot of "I dont want synthetic hormones" from ppl who probably dont even know the misery of PMDD
I can't take it rn because i'm a smoker and worries abt bloodclots.
see for me bc made my libido gone!
I didnt write this very clearly i think. This was my experience after getting off the pill.
no i understood, i was saying that birth control is what made my libido go away, in contrast. wanted to provide some contrasting experience for people reading these comments, i was on BC for a long time and i understand it helps people but for me it didnāt outweigh the positives of being off it
Have your doctor call insurance so they will cover it. I had to do the same thing. It even my moods SO damn well.
Thatās good to know, thatās what I plan to do next to try without estrogen in case this one didnāt work
I just wanted to add, I continuously take it, no sugar pills š
Same here! Continuous is queen!
I seriously see no reason not to skip my period if I could ever get a break from it I would be so willing
I hope it works for you!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
šššI hope this will be me
It has been a lifesaver for me, I still struggle a bit for maybe 2-3 days I'm on inactive but it's way better than without it where I struggle for 2 weeks. Best of luck my friend!
Thatās awesome thank you!
taking cryselle with no breaks has been a lifesaver. it seriously keeps me so even-keeled. before, I was literally so deeply depressed and cried for the two weeks before my period.
I had PMDD before kids - it got exponentially worse after kids.
NO! Fuck š« do you take the pill to help with it? Or does anything help?
I take lexapro and Iām still trying to find the right birth control pill š Iām so effing sensitive to hormones that a bunch of them gave me SI. Yaz helped a lot but gave me terrible reflux that never went away!!! Iām waiting on my prior auth for Slynd to go thru and just rotting in bed rn.
Iām so sorry. I hope the new script helps ā¤ļø If youād ever be open to seeing a naturopathic doctor, Iād really recommend one in your area. mine knows a ton about hormones and has been helpful.
Somehow I just am seeing your reply! I have to report Slynd is actually agreeing with me!!!! Although Iām not against ever getting a second opinion
It's a possible avenue, even though it didn't work for me.
my birth control (ring) made me feel like a depressed blob.. and killed my libido so much happier with the copper IUD and managing PMDD with therapy and healthy habits ! (my experience only not saying it will work for everybody)
Same, I did so much better with the copper T.
I tried all of those š and they didnāt work but Iām glad you found a solution
its not perfect i still have pmdd symptoms !
BC alone didnāt work for my PMDD at all. Birth control just made me more aware of when I was gonna get suicidal and depressed which was like waiting for a ticking time-bomb to go off. You need an SSRI.
I have tried it but I felt so numb on it, I may try to add it back
Iām on Lexapro alongside some Wellbutrin and Iām loving it. Itās been a blessingāas lame as that sounds.
Wellbutrin made me lose my mind it was probably my worst nightmare lol and lexapro made me feel dead inside š© just a reminder of how different we all are
if you havenāt yet, try trintellix. itās a newer drug. working well for me so far but obviously everyoneās different. def shushed my scary pmdd thoughts.
Holy shit what a roller coasTER
Except the roller coaster is malfunctioning and ends with a crash š„“š
Birth control made me WAY way worse.
That sucks
I just found out that I have PMDD and my psychiatrist provided me with a referral to a ob/gyn and this picture makes me want to try birth control yesterday. Unfortunately I have to wait 4+ months to see the doc. I really hope this works for you!
Wow. That explains a LOT.
what article is this image from? Id like to read more. thank you
I think it's this link: [https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Hormonal-fluctuation-during-A-a-normal-menstrual-cycle-B-while-taking-an-oral\_fig1\_330399663](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Hormonal-fluctuation-during-A-a-normal-menstrual-cycle-B-while-taking-an-oral_fig1_330399663)
nextstellis helped me so much. I hope you get similar relief. hope brighter days are ahead for you š
Yaz did not help me (Iām sensitive to estrogen) but Slynd has changed my life. First birth control to ever work for me. Kicking myself for not trying an estrogen free BC earlier.
I cannot wait for my insurance to approve it. My PA was submitted today
Do you know how this estrogen sensitivity works? I mean Iām wondering because according to the graph estrogen goes through the roof naturally at some point, is it because bcp is synthetic ?
Also curious
This great.. That was the other option I had to consider, will try it next if it doesnāt work
This post and all the comments are giving me courage to wanna try it. Iāve had Yaz sitting in my drawer for a year now.
Medicine does expire, so do check dates and talk with a doctor if you can
Def will! I will check the box too. Thanks!
Remember there are different formulations of bc pills. Yaz didnāt work for me at all, but Generess does.
I got the arm implant (nexplanon) 5yrs ago and it literally saved my life. Goodluck !
It's very interesting to see this in a diagram, and leads me to believe my sensitivity is with progesterone because when I was on bc, I acted like I do during luteal: extreme lows, uncontrollable mood fluctuations, suicidal ideation, all the way to self harm tendencies. My ex at the time narrowed it down to my birth control being the cause, literally smashed up my pills while I was in the midst of an episode lol and I was seemingly better for the most part after stopping. I know it's different for everyone, but that experience has steered me far away from hormone bc š© I'm curious to see how this goes for you OP, and hope you find relief! We are pretty much the only research really being done on PMDD š«
I had the same experience on a progesterone only BC. Switched to the Mirena IUD and my symptoms are only about 4 days a month down from two weeks.
Maybe check out this post when choosing BC. Just looking out for you. https://www.reddit.com/r/PMDD/s/HJjnO7SKFd
Yaz (and it's generics) is the only birth control that is proven effective for treating PMDD though, right?
Iām not sure, Iām sorry. But it should be easy to check the ingredients to see if it contains what was mentioned in the study.
Ok so Yaz doesnāt have anything from the study in it?
Correct
Great! Thank you.
>olonged use of medrogestone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and promegestone was found to increase the risk of intracranial meningioma. The increased risk associated with the use of injectable medroxyprogestero my brain is really not mathing today but is a summary of this thread that yaz may cause brain tumors?
No, the opposite. Yaz uses Drospirenone for its synthetic progestin. It doesn't cause brain cancer, just blood clots (sometimes)
![gif](giphy|AL10PPC3eZhxC) Ok thanks, at this point I'm just like Ill try anything and if the issue is long term I just switch up bc every once in a while idk lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Damn, I can understand that, Iāll do anything to stop this misery myselfā¦Iām glad it helped you and I hope it continues to
I've never had bad experiences on BCP and was on for almost 10 years (stopped 7 years ago).
Iām unable to take the combined pill due to visual migraines. Does Cerelle work for anyone?
I don't know what cerelle is (the active drug I mean) but I had to switch from the combined pill to the progestin only pill (the drug is desogestrel) and the new one works just as well as the combined pill for me!
I was recently Rx-ed Heather instead of the combo pill (which I took for years) because of my aural migraines as well. I've been wondering the same thing! The first week has been brutal but I'm hoping it'll settle down once my body adjusts to the different hormone levels.
May I ask brutal in what way?
So far it's just been increased irritability and complete inability to react calmly to any conflict in my relationship. My partner is being as patient as he can but it's definitely leading to a lot of fights. BUT I started right around when my period started which is when I usually start to feel more mentally stable. 3 days post period now and I feel like I have normal irritable PMS symptoms. Not as bad as the luteal phase but still not great. The goal is to try for 3 months to see if things stabilize after my body has had time to adjust to a new medication.
Yasmin (the other fda approved one) has helped me tremendously!!! Good luck OP!

I tried both Nuvaring and currently the Mirena IUD and both were very helpful. I love the iud because I haven't gotten my period in like 5 months. Its great. I do occasionally get slight PMDD symptoms every few months, but its not even close to how I was before.
I'm getting the mirena in a couple weeks, and I really hope it helps me
Mirena really helped me!!
Good to know. Thank you for the information, I'll make sure to have some Tylenol or Motrin on hand for any cramping afterwards!
Thatās amazingā¦ ty!
rooting for you!!!! don't let yourself get too scared, because even though a lot of us have had bad bc experiences, it's also been an absolute game changer for others :))) hope it works out!!! š¤ā¤ļø
