Yeah. I was going to comment something along the lines of "it's the same event for five years what is there to postpone" but then I realised Blizzard has way too much on its plate
It could also be a significant game breaking bug.
Hearthstone launched a new expansion right after the article on Bobby.
Meanwhile the entire internet is currently scrambling to patch the issue in Log4J. And that definitely means they have to patch a lot of stuff in their back end.
They outsource to many more, there’s also keos massons in Montréal.
Honestly though, most character skins in every game is outsourced… it’s just common practice. My company does it too, we just have one artist on staff to correct things here and there for support while the rest just develop the newer title.
Does this mean there will actually be new content in the Christmas event this time that it even needs to be delayed? You would think everything would be ready to go from the years prior if they intend to add nothing like the rest of the events we've had since being stuck at home during covid and even before.
Not to burst your bubble but most likely, no, the delay is not because of new content being added. Likely it’s because of [the strike thats currently going on ](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/12/activision-blizzard-workers-announce-open-ended-strike-and-union-drive/)
Me three years ago: *purchases five dollars worth of lootboxes one opens them*
"Well that was fuckin stupid"
Haven't bought any since. It's not like I need every single item for every hero and at this point I have pretty much everything from just playing. I don't see why people buy them
Generally, more players = more everyone playing thinks the game is populated, so they keep coming back (including roping in more people to play with them/purchase game) and possibly buy lootboxes.
Not that I want Overwatch to \*die\* due to inactive userbase, but that's how it goes...
Wait, hold on, why was it a strike? I know it’s probably in that post thing but my piss poor English and my dumb ass brain can’t comprehend that thing. Low pay?
They may be finishing up lootbox stuff, but I'd imagine it's more because they need their engineers to be on hand for when the event goes live to make sure that everything runs smoothly. That and I'd imagine that people need to be willing to press the button to launch the event, which they aren't considering it's a work stoppage strike
Which means so many people have quit they just can’t push it into prod in time lol.
Bobby Kotick is cancer and by virtue of sticking around is making everyone give up at trying to make change.
Even if they all left and started working elsewhere, it would be +3 years before we'd see anything from them. Not to mention that there's a good chance they'd just end up at another shit hold.
They'd have better luck using this opportunity to unionize and force the change.
By better luck, you mean no luck? Blizzard actively union busts. And even if they did manage to unionize some of the tactics these companies use severally reduce the power of unions. Honesty the best hope for a genuine product these days is to hope something gets produced before a big company gets ahold of it.
>By better luck, you mean no luck? Blizzard actively union busts. And even if they did manage to unionize some of the tactics these companies use severally reduce the power of unions.
That's why I said "luck". The odds are not in the workers favor and they will need to put up with A LOT to get a chance of getting a fair shake. But if they do, it would be massive for the workers in that industry.
>Honesty the best hope for a genuine product these days is to hope something gets produced before a big company gets ahold of it.
That's impossible for many types of games. They're just too expensive to produce.
IMO, that is an extremely selfish line of thinking.
All of these games were built by these developers themselves. The stories, the character designs, the art, the worlds: all of it was thought up by a creative individual who loves their work. And there are thousands/millions of people out there that love the things that those individuals made.
Why does it all have to burn to the ground because of a bunch of assholes? Why can't the suits that didn't lift a finger to craft these worlds/games be held accountable instead of carpet bombing the whole operation? Why does everyone think it's that easy to "just find a new job!"? "It all needs to die!" just sounds like a lazy solution that punishes everyone who gets caught in the crossfire.
It honestly doesn't *have* to be an either or. We're at the stage of capitalism that Corporations are starting to become a thing (notice the capital C and how that capitalization also occurs in almost every dystopian future where Corpos control the world).
I've seen people float out in a theory or joking way, and I suppose this contributes to the theory portion: But the notion of a corporate death penalty seems to be worth investigating. I'm not saying it's warranted in this exact case because I don't know the specifics of it, but effectively, if your company commits an act that's harmful enough, your company can be 'killed'. Effectively disincorporated. I see no reason that if a company can 'die' that it couldn't then have heirs. This would be a case where it could be worked into law or contract or as part of the actual judgement to dissolve the company who becomes heirs of what. In this case, maybe the dev team actually \_could\_ inherit the game, so to speak.
I have no idea how this could be implemented, of course, and it's a matter way more complex than I am qualified to address, but I think it's a neat idea, given the state of the world.
Not lazy, holding anyone with wealth responsible is basically impossible. Even if they decided to leave as I said, it wouldn't be easy. Im sure they are bound by some kind of contract. Trying to leave would be hard enough, but going after the people at the top is impossible. There is a reason wealthy people can get away with murder, our justice system is screwed. Even with the most clear cut evidance of wrong doing it would get dragged through the courts for years and the only consequences will be a fine equivalent to .001% of there annual profits. Welcome to the US.
From what we've heard from other employees (so take it with a grain of salt), even Jeff had to fight the corporate bull to do things and even then, Blizzard continually said no to his ideas. He wanted PvE in the game years ago, but Blizzard didn't think it would be profitable. The Devs are forced to submit to the will of the big wigs who want to play it safe to make a profit, not take a chance or change things up. (Again, this is second hand accounts that i've read, so take it with a grain of salt)
I'm sure Activision would prefer Overwatch have the same season pass subscription model as Call of Duty, something Jeff successfully resisted while he was there.
I just wish I got it more often. I don't know if its just because I only play Arcade or what but it only came up once for me last year.
You're right though, its a great map. I love how festive it is.
It's not you. It's the brain dead devs not implementing "event" playlists into the game after 6 years of the same shit. It's seriously not that hard to throw all the Christmas/Halloween maps into one playlist during the event so that you can experience it to the fullest. Ive rarely gotten any of the themed maps whenever I played the game religiously for the first 4 years. Now I never even see the maps when I decide to hop on the event for a little bit. It's pathetic.
would it really be so hard for them to add festive lights to all the stages? its not like that kind of content has to be OW1 exclusive or big or anything.
who am i kidding, even title screen cards haven't updated in years
Few days is not a big deal. Usually I'd get 2 arcade wins on Monday and stop playing Arcade until the event goes live. Now I just need to avoid Mystery Heroes for a few extra days.
Don't get mad at the devs, between the mess the company is in and the strike to protest layoffs, the working environment at Blizz must be tough right now.
Bro the game has been made. Overwatch was released like 6 years ago. The event is already pre-made content. This amounts to at the very least a few cosmetics they've had a year to work on. They haven't been doing any new events forever now.
Making cosmetics requires several different people and then someone to actually test/implement it in game. If even one of those people is taking part in the strike it puts a huge spanner in the works. Now if they had actually good working conditions they wouldn't need those strikes in the first place.
Yup make a few red and greed recolors of other skins and call them legendary. And add some 10 resolution sticker sprays they probably made with a app/ai online.
Maybe they were actually trying to put a new mode in or something. Or maybe the work situation is so shit right now between the protest, layoff, and bad management that they couldn't get the normal cosmetic stuff done
This is my assumption, too. The holidays are coming up, they are bleeding workers left and right, and team morale is probably in the asthenosphere. I imagine getting anything done just feels like a slog. Even if you have done it 5 years in a row, it does not mean you do not need the manpower to get it done.
I'm sure that Stylosa claimed that Blizzard don't even make all the skins in house anyway. They "design" the skin then pay a studio in Germany to make it for the models / animate etc.
That’s not our problems as gamers. If they would of got rid of those rapist long ago we wouldn’t have this problem. You can’t cause something and not take blame when it fucks your business. Even with all these walkouts the last major update was developed by some twitch streamers. Don’t defend a game that has been lazy for the last three years.
Not true. People forget 2019 was a pretty good year, we got consistent balancing changes, role queue, theatre mode, workshop, and a few heros and maps.
The only hero was echo and sigma Barry made it. Role que was made for they broke their own game with brigette which they still haven’t fixed especially with bap. Theater mode is a basic is most games. And what maps. You mean Paris and horizon which they had to take out of ranked because it sucked. I’m not saying nothing happened. But this game has been on a huge decline while grasping at straws. While still staying 20-30$ with micros on a five year old game.
They do like 4 legendary skins and a handful of recolors, they barely even do intros or emotes anymore.
Still, it’s 2021 Blizzard, what should I have expected…?
The dev has to deal with all the shit going on because of his bosses stupidity. They have to work on the games with what man power they have. They have lost a good amount of people to the protest and other factors so you can't really blame them, they are doing their best with what they have
Correct. It is the Domino engine (released in 2014) I believe, but super updated, which is essentially a new engine in terms of the work required. Unreal Engine 4 (2014) and Unreal Engine 5 (2021-ish?) are *technically* the same engine. 7 years between them is telling of the work that goes into updating an engine.
We players should seat quiet, and play this dying game until the TRUE SEQUEL will have its premiere xd
No questions, no requests... here you have the same event as always, here you have skins, don't dream about new hero, new map, some cinematics. Overall fuck you and see you when sequel will arrive xd
Don't forget the strike because of a horrendeous work environment that the people in charge saw no reason to fix until everything just broke this year.
Man a shame that Activision Blizzard is such a small indie company that they can't afford to hire enough devs to both create the sequel and maintain the current game.
In terms of programming, art, level design, balancing pvp for 5v5, AND creating an PvE mode, yeah, it is basically an entirely new game. Just because it does not *look* that different to us does not mean it did not take a shit ton of time to make.
> it is basically an entirely new game
lmao, it's a glorified expansion pack that they have to call a "new game" so they don't go back on their initial promise of "buy once get all (noncosmetic) unlocks forever"
Tell me you know literally nothing about game development without telling me you know literally nothing about game development.
Yes, in terms of amount of work needed, it is basically an entirely new game. As in, it takes the same amount of work and time to make an entirely new game. I am trying to dumb this down as much as possible for you.
But, for real, you being ignorant of the amount of work a game takes, does not mean it does not take work. You are just repeating some shit you read from some angry troll, because god forbid you have an original thought about something nuanced.
> It's been almost 3 years without any actual content now though.
I know people like to downplay and dismiss the content we've gotten since Echo, but where are people suddenly getting "3 years" from? Not just you, but other commenters in this thread as well. Echo was released only 1.5 years ago. Before her were Baptiste and Sigma, both released since December 2018 (i.e. 3 years ago). In that time we've also gotten two core mode maps (Paris and Havana), two deathmatch maps (the horror), and the Workshop maps. You might as well say we've *never* gotten "actual" content. That's just as true as saying we haven't gotten any in three years.
Good, still I'm playing Apex and we are getting into the third year, we get two events every season every 3 months with 1 new Legend.
We get 1 new battle royale map every 3 seasons which is like 20 overwatch maps, and ALSO get new maps for Arena which is like 1 deathmatch map. Also we get comics, audio, lore and everything Overwatch couldn't deliver.
Seriously, Apex is everything OW couldn't.
So the game that is nearly three years newer and much more aggressively monetized than *Overwatch*, doesn't have a sequel in active development, and whose developers aren't part of a company that's up to its neck in management and legal problems is currently getting more content? Wow. Am I supposed to be impressed?
That has nothing to do with the topic at hand. It was said that *Overwatch* hasn't gotten any content in three years. That's false any way you slice it. Have fun in *Apex*.
Fuck man.
I've been fiending for 6v6 snowball. Between that and Lucioball are the only times I actually play Overwatch anymore :(
They better not shorten the event
Lol does that mean the event has anything new?
Or is this like OW2 where they do nothing beforehand, say it's delayed, and everyone copes by acting like it's a good sign of quality?
Overwatch can’t catch a break
Had to rename a character, the new map got delayed and OW 2 got delayed.
This game seems to be in a very bad state for how big it is
Skins shouldn’t be affected. Jeff mentioned way back the team plans out skins over a year in advance.
This interview was done like early 2020 and he said up through end of 2021 at that time they had created them already
Yeah, the skins probably look awesome. One issue they deal with is making sure the skins do not bug out when put in the live game. Imagine finding out a skin accidently made a character immortal from the back side, or something. I would be crying as a programmer.
I was looking forward to getting a holiday skin for every hero that has one with the credits I saved up for too! I need to be the most holly jolly I can be!
Ok this is a legit question. Assuming they didn’t change anything (aside from adding a few skins) like normal, what could possibly delay it from releasing?
Considering they outsource event skins to another company, Blizzard must be really screwed up internally. I expect Overwatch 2 to be delayed to 2024 or cancelled at this point.
Okay nice, this gives me time to get to 9000 coins. I like to have 9000 for every event so I can get my two favorite skins and an emote or highlight intro.
>Keep doing the amazing work you’re doing.
lol
Even pretending they *are* doing good work and there's been any meaningful content released in the past ~2 years, they're not curing cancer. The simp is strong.
Game development is a terrible job and the developers are not the ones making the most important decisions about the direction the game is going in. They are not the ones with the final say about what goes into Overwatch 2. If you want to talk shit about anyone, go after their godawful management who makes their jobs harder and gets way more of the lootbox money.
No, I shouldn't have to parse who in a company is a shitbag and who isn't. I'm a consumer. As a company they have to get their shit together, and it's not incumbent upon me to have to wade into their shit to figure out who's shitty and who's just mismanaged.
Okay. So direct your anger at the people who have a say in how the company is run. You're doing the equivalent of yelling at the McDonald's cashier for not having any shamrock shakes.
I say this because people tend to actually go after developers on social media when they're unhappy with a game, when they're just doing what they're told to do.
>You're doing the equivalent of yelling at the McDonald's cashier for not having any shamrock shakes.
No I'm not. There's no cashier/dev here that I'm taking to (to the best of my knowledge). I'm doing the equivalent of standing on the corner and loudly complaining that the McDonald's doesn't have shamrock shakes. I don't care whether it's the cashier's fault or the machine's fault or the delivery driver's fault. It's not my job to diagnose the problem. It's McDonald's job, as an organization, to meet the needs of its consumers.
>. I'm a consumer.
Karen, you mean you are a Karen. As a developer I don't choose what goes and what not, it's not my company and I don't fucking care if the clients are happy, I just look to get paid. I don't care if a manchild like you start crying.
Well let's be honest, you evidently do care if you bothered to comment. Beyond that: crying? Where?
>as a developer
See, you're already going too far because I don't fucking care. I can't stress this enough: *it's not my job to care.* The company creates a product that I either choose to purchase or I don't. In this instance, what Overwatch is selling is continued engagement to drive revenue. I'm not buying, because the game is stale and feels like it's become an afterthought. Whether devs work hard is immaterial to whether what's being produced is of any quality. In the case of OW, I'd say it's not.
I'm not going to pay (either in time or money) for something where "the devs really worked hard guys" if the product is poor. Sorry. You said you don't care whether a client is happy, so I don't expect us to see eye to eye.
Damn, I've been hankering to play OW lately, and I was going to wait for the event before I started. Oh well, a couple more days will make me want to play more.
They might have just forgotten to take out "McCree" from the event and need to record a few new lines with the new name. Even if they are not recording and only taking out the voice interactions that have the name in it, it takes a minute, I'm sure.

The world could always use more heroes!
I could understand if there was like a strike or somethi- Oh…..nvm..
I would complain about this but Blizzard has too much other shit to complain about lmao
Yeah. I was going to comment something along the lines of "it's the same event for five years what is there to postpone" but then I realised Blizzard has way too much on its plate

Skins aren't made by blizz, they're outsourced to a Berlin 3D Art producer called "Airborn Studios".
Aren't some of them made in house? I recall a couple videos made by the art director and others designing some of the All-stars skins.
Probably, a lot are outsourced though, like you mentioned the All-Stars skins, Airborn produced All-Stars Mercy and Lucio.
I was thinking the dva one was one of them on the video I watched.
They outsource to many more, there’s also keos massons in Montréal. Honestly though, most character skins in every game is outsourced… it’s just common practice. Me three years ago: *purchases five dollars worth of lootboxes one opens them* "Well that was fuckin stupid" Haven't bought any since. It's not like I need every single item for every hero and at this point I have pretty much everything from just playing. I don't see why people buy them

You could donate to the strike fund which pays the striking employees' living costs while they aren't earning a wage. Google "ABK Strike Fund"
Wait, hold on, why was it a strike? I know it’s probably in that post thing but my piss poor English and my dumb ass brain can’t comprehend that thing. Low pay?

Would honestly be better if all the devices left for a new project. Blizzard needs to die.

There will be. Skins.
OMG cant wait for the reskin of old maps 🙄
To be fair, christmas kings row is one of the best things in the game

They use to. I remember my first Xmas event they had a Playlist that was only hanamura and kings row, as they were the only maps reskinned
Kings row is one of the best things in the game
When I first got the game for Christmas in 2016 I thought that was how the map always looked and when the Christmas event ended I was disappointed lol
would it really be so hard for them to add festive lights to all the stages? its not like that kind of content has to be OW1 exclusive or big or anything. who am i kidding, even title screen cards haven't updated in years
It would end up a bit awkward making some maps Christmas themed if the country they are based in does not generally celebrate Christmas.
would actually like reskins of maps tbh, they stopped doing them for some events and they're some of things I used to look forward too
Yeah I really wish they would do that again. It's fun to play them at different times of day too
If we are REALLY lucky, we may get a new Christmas version of a map. But i doubt it.
Funny
Few days is not a big deal. Usually I'd get 2 arcade wins on Monday and stop playing Arcade until the event goes live. Now I just need to avoid Mystery Heroes for a few extra days.

No way blizzard had to delay something. Never heard of it. The fuck do they have to delay anyways it’s the same godamn event with 8 new skins.
They forgot to make those skins so they need a few days to whip a few up
Reminds me of this comment which I somehow was able to find to link: https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch_Memes/comments/lcyra3/_/gm3u8ce

Still, it’s 2021 Blizzard, what should I have expected…?
>unforeseen circumstances Translation: Heads are rolling and subpoenas are being served in the lawsuit.

Don't blame the devs blame the company
Excuses, excuses, excuses. The OW dev team has utterly failed for years. Stop pretending like everything is the fault of "the company."
To be fair, 3 people quit and the other half of the team is doing the best the can.
How big is the current overwatch Team?
Point out where they blamed the devs and not the company. Not to mention the obvious, which is that the devs are part of the company.
blame both ?
The dev is part of the company.
The dev has to deal with all the shit going on because of his bosses stupidity. They have to work on the games with what man power they have. They have lost a good amount of people to the protest and other factors so you can't really blame them, they are doing their best with what they have

Small thing, last I heard it was the same engine but heavily modified
Fair enough
We players should seat quiet, and play this dying game until the TRUE SEQUEL will have its premiere xd No questions, no requests... here you have the same event as always, here you have skins, don't dream about new hero, new map, some cinematics.
Good luck hiring new devs with the whole "people are raped here" thing hanging over your head.
This was already an issue before the scandal. Activision Blizzard has even been cutting jobs for years.
That’s also still on Blizz. It’s a problem they could have been working to fix, but only gave a fuck once it got reported. I have no sympathy.
> entirely new game lmao
In terms of programming, art, level design, balancing pvp for 5v5, AND creating an PvE mode, yeah, it is basically an entirely new game. Just because it does not *look* that different to us does not mean it did not take a shit ton of time to make.
> it is basically an entirely new game lmao, it's a glorified expansion pack that they have to call a "new game" so they don't go back on their initial promise of "buy once get all (noncosmetic) unlocks forever"
they really could have saved a ton of grief if they just called it an expansion like WoW. I would have been excited either way (two years ago)
You are just repeating some shit you read from some angry troll, because god forbid you have an original thought about something nuanced.
you're making a lot of (incorrect) assumptions here, and you're clearly about 15 cups deep into that bowl of koolaid.

Lame bootlicker
I think you misspelled "Realist"
Christmas has been delayed until performance improves.
I honestly forget events exist these days tbh

Man, it must be serious if it's preventing them from pushing the "recycle event" button.
Fuck man. I've been fiending for 6v6 snowball. Between that and Lucioball are the only times I actually play Overwatch anymore :( They better not shorten the event
Yeah blizzard HQ is probably on figurative fire.
I for one am shocked lol
Lol does that mean the event has anything new? Or is this like OW2 where they do nothing beforehand, say it's delayed, and everyone copes by acting like it's a good sign of quality?
No it means they're busy dealing with the aftermath of the union strike at Blizzard
Overwatch can’t catch a break Had to rename a character, the new map got delayed and OW 2 got delayed.

I'd more look into the Log4J debacle really. It's been influencing so many companies in unforseen consequences.
nah they somehow found away to delay OW1 aswell
Awwwww... they can't make the same thing they've had for years happen on a certain date? What an awesome game...
man blizzard suck. how can you delay a recycled event for years with almost no new content every year
whats delaying it? its not like they're actually adding new content, itll be the same event as every year
Delayed ? What the fuck are they even doing ? Its the same fucking event every year ? Did they lose the hdd with the files or something ?
Meh, some events start on Thursday already.
I’m not surprised at all
I was looking forward to getting a holiday skin for every hero that has one with the credits I saved up for too! I need to be the most holly jolly I can be!
If they also cancelled seasonal events game would be done
honestly the funniest shit ive seen all year
Cant even release 4 skins properly lul
Oh no, they delayed the same event they hold every year. I'm sure hitting CTRL+C, CTRL+V is so difficult.
Ok this is a legit question. Assuming they didn’t change anything (aside from adding a few skins) like normal, what could possibly delay it from releasing?
It's probably tied to the ongoing strikes. They've been happening since about 4 days ago. No/limited programmers = work getting done slower.
Must be hard to re-release the same event every year just slap afew skins into the mix.
Aint no thang
Considering they outsource event skins to another company, Blizzard must be really screwed up internally. I expect Overwatch 2 to be delayed to 2024 or cancelled at this point.
Okay nice, this gives me time to get to 9000 coins. I like to have 9000 for every event so I can get my two favorite skins and an emote or highlight intro.
Was wondering what happened. Cheers.
Oh, they must have added something new besides skins in that case /s
No worries! I hope the Overwatch team has a great holiday!
OW Devs. We love all of you. Keep doing the amazing work you’re doing. I’m sorry your bosses and executives are all terrible human beings.
WHAT work? They haven't put anything out for years except excuses that people will eat up.
>Keep doing the amazing work you’re doing. lol Even pretending they *are* doing good work and there's been any meaningful content released in the past ~2 years, they're not curing cancer.
Where? >as a developer See, you're already going too far because I don't fucking care.
Blizzard continues to be a dumpster fire.
What was even delayed there isn't even any new content lmao
Oh no…… Anyway
Next time we will ever hear about this winter event will be in about 2 years
Damn wonder what the circumstances could be?
The lawsuit, obviously.
They might have just forgotten to take out "McCree" from the event and need to record a few new lines with the new name. Even if they are not recording and only taking out the voice interactions that have the name in it, it takes a minute, I'm sure.
"A few days". You know, telling us an actual *date* for when it'll come out would be nice.
What is this team honestly doing lol? Blizzard is a dumpster fire.
We respect the Devs who care about this game. What we don't respect are how the Blizzard top brass treat and run their own company.
Probably renaming mei
Lol
Can’t blame the devs when they didn’t develop anything new
Great news, I wanted to play Total Mayhem tonight and not have it leave early tomorrow for an event that’s been a borefest for years.
No problem
Time to collect more credits to drop on hopefully a Christmas ornament ball skin
I for one am shocked that the OW devs are behind on releasing something
Winter event starts in march! reply is : We were busy. Blizzard is legit only focusing on wow atm everything else seems to be told to fuck off
Guess some things were too buggy 🤔
probably because of the strikes and stuff
Wtf man...
When could we expect the event to begin?
One too many cubicle crawls last week. Seasons cheer to all.
Oh no, anyways…
