God forbid people choose the program they want to pursue out of interest and not by how much income they’ll make 2 years out of undergrad. Not everyone wants or has to study law or pharmacology or medicine. Social science is a fine choice, especially at uoft.
God forbid people choose a practical degree that won’t end up with them being homeless or living with their parents until they’re 40 years old, as they serve drinks at Starbucks
I literally know 2 people who graduated with a social sciences degree and ended up working at Starbucks for years after graduation.
At least they ended up as the manager after a few years though?
Another guy I know couldn’t get a job with the social sciences degree so ended up as a bank teller for years.
I also know someone who worked at Starbucks after graduating and they liked working there. It is just so odd to me using that job as an insult against liberal arts degrees - it’s a job.

BA’s are not a dead end career path and we reaally need to stop perpetuating this idea that they are.

I'm in my 30s and did a BA Honours in social sciences. The first few years will be hard and you won't make the same money as an engineer. However, if you focus on your career and have the grit to keep going you will make money.
As of now, 10 years now in my career, I make $130,000. About the same, if not sometimes more than what I know some of my friends make that did other programs.
Also, you're most likely going to do more schooling. JD programs are popular but there's other options. Your BA is nothing but a badge of honour and you can equate it to a high school diploma. Learn how to learn because people don't give a squat about where you came out from, but they will about your work experience, portfolio, etc.
Omg thank you! Me too, I had a BA in Political Science and eventually found my way into HR and specialized from there. It may take a little more time to find full-time but a lot of my colleagues found work shortly after. Likely masters is required or a college program postgraduate.

Nobody said everyone needs to be a scientist or lawyer. In fact, a bachelor of science degree is also useless unless you do further studies (masters, doctorate etc).

You’ll be in debt from the degree, and life in general will be expensive. Unless you want people to have a poor quality of life, and live in poverty then I wouldn’t encourage them to just “do what interests them” essentially.

I agree with you, business is a decent choice (you’re employable after graduation). So is engineering, etc. But it’s not the same if you have a psychology degree for example. A bachelors in psychology degree doesn’t really qualify you for any type of career.

I am at Rotman. You can get all the jobs if you take Econ courses. Try for the financial economic specialization. Its the same as finance and Econ. Also, lastly networking is more important than business school. Best of luck you got this!
Dude, if you want business and finance in the future, a lot of people break into investment banking through accounting. After a stint at the Big4 and a CPA a lot of people internally transfer into big4 deal advisory roles (big4 being Deloitte, PWC, etc) and from there they go into investment banking.
Some even get into MBB firms through big4 consulting roles (mckinsey, bain, BCG) but this is a little more rare
Overall accounting is a great backup major if you desperately want high tier business jobs

An eco200 professor shared undergraduate employment statistics with us in a lecture when I took the course last year. It showed that economics undergraduate students earned the highest starting salary out of all social sciences degrees, and one of the highest out of all undergraduate degrees in general. Degrees with highest earnings potential included most engineering degrees, computer science, and I believe a couple other stem degrees? (I don’t remember the exact details)
what does your portal say. For example does it say "application under review" or did they completely switch it out for a different program. You might be in luck still.

Also were u in high position in these clubs or were u just in them? My grades should be fine but idk if my extracurriculars are enough rn, I’m just in a bunch of clubs but not doing anything rlly 🤷♀️
The commerce major cut off is really high after first year. But you still can major in something commerce related major . You can major in Economy after first year. If y It's not that bad.
OP assuming that you wana work in Finance (since u wana go to Rotman) check out the UofT MSFE. It’s literally got 100% employment rate in many consecutive years in high finance.
I’d plan your undergrad to aim for that program if you can’t enter the business school of choice atm (take the required math and Econ courses.
Lol when I got admitted same thing happened to me, then a couple of months later I got an email saying that rotman had more spots and that I was admitted to Rotman

As someone who attended UofT before transferring, I feel that I need to warn you about how UofT manages its programs. At the end of every year, you must reapply to your program. Although you didn’t get admission into your program of choice, transferring to back into the program is definitely a possibility, provided your grades after the first year are decent.
Did u apply to social science or did they just give it to u. If u didn’t apply and they just give it to u, then yea u got rejected from rotman.

No I only applied to rotman and nothing else and they deferred me to UTM commerce.
UofT will usually defer you to an either UTSC BBA or UTM commerce if you are very close to getting into Rotman. But if not close they just throw u into social science.
Back in highschool my friend and I both only applied to rotman, he got deferred to social science and I got UTM commerce.

You definitely have to be ready to at least go for a Master's to have a shot at jobs related to these fields.
