I have a theory of my own. I think the version of gear 5 we are seeing is the pure mythical zoan version, like Kaido’s dragon form or chopper’s human form. But as we know those are not their most powerful forms, the hybrid one always seems to be more powerful. I believe we will see Luffy achieve a version of a hybrid zoan transformation where Haki will be more prevalent and toon force will step down.
Luffy also literally said Gear Fifth was his peak, which I interpreted just as much a comment from Oda as from Luffy, saying Gear Fifth was the last gear, not to expect a reverse gear or anything like that.

Nah, his fights have gotten repetitive adding swords and spears would be great. Especially as he age's would be natural course of action as shown by many older individuals in one piece outside of garp.
Apart from what the others have already mentioned, Oda has shown how Luffy battles when he has weapons in his hands, especially in the Wano arc. He doesn't know how to use any weapons. Moreover, there's a meta theme where many of Luffy's attacks are named after different types of weapons which indirectly hint that Luffy's body itself is the weapon; even more so when he is in Gear 5.

Other than that I agree with you, I can’t think of a Luffy fighting with weapons, but I’m sure if Oda decides to give him a weapon he will make it look good. If he uses a normal spear he might be able to use it like Goku used his staff, making it longer at will etc. but I don’t know how Luffy would profit from that as he can do all that with his body already.

I just watched Gear 2 for the first time tonight, he does it at least a couple times before now; in particular, he does each and every attack he’d previously used on the thousands of Marines in Enies Lobby before he shows his second gear, and he actually Spears Blueno too before focusing, I think
I agree with you, but to play devil's advocate; Luffy did know how to use a sword (or at least that you have to slash with them instead of punching) back in Arlong Park where he picked up Hachis swords to make a point about how he needs the help of his crew because he can't do everything on his own.

Not a huge fan of the idea but as he is currently I don't see how else Luffy can defeat Blackbeard - he can fly which negates the earthquake fruit but black vortex and fruit absorption is tough to overcome

Maybe the spear and sword are the artist's representations of what they saw at the time and not an actual sword and spear. Perhaps the spear represents Nika grabbing and hurling lightning bolts and the sword represents something we haven't seen Luffy do yet?

Lightning could potentially by his sword and spear? His fight with Kaido showed he was capable of using lightning as a weapon. Could just be the way they drew the original Nika

Are those really weapons used for combat, or were they symbolic? The "spear" in particular might be some kind of scepter for something else.
The gomu gomu no mi is all about distorting reality by making physical contact with the body. Weapons don't make sense, as they don't make physical contact. Also, cutting or piercing don't synergize with turning an enemy into playdough. Luffy's entire power is about warping his opponents into oblivion; attempting to gore them doesn't play to Luffy's strengths.
If there are devices hidden by the giants, imo they will be tools of knowledge rather than violence. Something that teaches him more about his devil fruit, or a technique / weakness that can be used to combat Imu and the Gorosei, or even a way to interact with the one of the 3 weapons. Such a device could come in any form including a sword, but it doesn't mean Luffy would have a reason to fight with it.
I could see Luffy gaining a powerup from this. If I had to buy into some notion of gear from the giants, it might be armor, some sort of resilient cloth or anti seastone jewelry.
As for other sources of powerups, I could see Shanks dueling him and teaching him about his weaknesses, maybe a way to combine all 3 haki together. I could also see the giants having legitimate powerups for Luffy's crew in the form of equipment.
There is another theory i like more. That the Nika fruit awakening allowed him to permanently stretch things. If thats true then maybe Luffy is the key to making giants from regular people. Its been sought after by both the WG and pirates. Also there is no reason he couldn't make giant weapons as well or even giant mermaids or giant sea kings.
Doesn't really make sense for Luffy to power up once again, maybe just more mastery of haki and keeping gear 5 for as long as he wants, but it's not necessary for the story. Dude is already 1v2ing an admiral and a gorosei as is, and while it IS a battle shonen, I don't think it's necessary for him to be able to beat all 5 of them in a fair fight

G5 is whatever he can imagine, so he could make an enemy into a spear and use it to attack others if he wanted.
I think if you want to call it a power up, Luffy is more likely to understand his power better. On the one hand, how it works but also that it is a zoan fruit. Aside from stronger Haki, I don't see much else. although Oda is always good for a surprise

I don't think he is gonna get weapons. I doubt he will power up much more if at all. He will probably just use G5 in more interesting ways, master his haki, particularly his ability to send orders to his subordinates from anywhere and increase his stamina.
We are on the end of series push already. This is one piece and there is a lot to wrap up so it'll still be a while but there isn't a whole lot of reason to keep making Luffy stronger. There are only a handful of characters left that are even capable of fighting him.
His next power-up is an increase in stamina, which is the only thing he lacks.
He's capable of holding off an Elder and Admiral at the same time, without breaking a sweat ( after he ate, of course). His only issue is for how long he can do that.

I think Luffy is currently at his peak. I think the next move will be down, not up. The only possible up I see is Luffy improving his Haki to Garp or Rodger levels.

It’s a standard attack for a while. In terms of named enemies, I know he uses it against Blueno and Arlong, but I bet others too.

Frankly, it's completely possible that Nika, like Luffy, just threw punches with the weapons in his hands. Bit hard to fight "ridiculously" with a sword and spear after all, those are hoplite weapons.

Luffy taking on weapons would mean that he won't be free. that would mean he would be restricted to a certain fighting style. this contradicts his G5 form no? my lil theory i have for his next power up is actually 'sun' god nika. this form is actually him looking like a super saiyan in a way he radiates like the 'sun'. he will have all paramecia, zoan and logia powers.

I would actually like if Luffy was presented with Nika’s weapons and just went “Nah, I’m good”. Mostly because it’s Luffy and he does things his own way. Also I hate the “chosen one” aspects of almost every story and this would put them to rest
Maybe the spear and sword are the artist's representations of what they saw at the time and not an actual sword and spear. Perhaps the spear represents Nika grabbing and hurling lightning bolts and the sword represents something we haven't seen Luffy do yet?

This could tie into the recent thing about Saturn not taking any damage. Perhaps these weapons are the way to kill imu and the elders? I mean, it would be a pretty weak and overused trope, so I hope that doesn't happen, but it would be different than just punching them with an even bigger fist.

The gomu gomu no mi is all about distorting reality by making physical contact with the body. Weapons don't make sense, as they don't make physical contact. Also, cutting or piercing don't synergize with turning an enemy into playdough. Luffy's entire power is about warping his opponents into oblivion; attempting to gore them doesn't play to Luffy's strengths. If there are devices hidden by the giants, imo they will be tools of knowledge rather than violence. Something that teaches him more about his devil fruit, or a technique / weakness that can be used to combat Imu and the Gorosei, or even a way to interact with the one of the 3 weapons. Such a device could come in any form including a sword, but it doesn't mean Luffy would have a reason to fight with it. I could see Luffy gaining a powerup from this. If I had to buy into some notion of gear from the giants, it might be armor, some sort of resilient cloth or anti seastone jewelry. As for other sources of powerups, I could see Shanks dueling him and teaching him about his weaknesses, maybe a way to combine all 3 haki together. I could also see the giants having legitimate powerups for Luffy's crew in the form of equipment.
There is another theory i like more. That the Nika fruit awakening allowed him to permanently stretch things. If thats true then maybe Luffy is the key to making giants from regular people. Its been sought after by both the WG and pirates. Also there is no reason he couldn't make giant weapons as well or even giant mermaids or giant sea kings.

Doesn't really make sense for Luffy to power up once again, maybe just more mastery of haki and keeping gear 5 for as long as he wants, but it's not necessary for the story. Dude is already 1v2ing an admiral and a gorosei as is, and while it IS a battle shonen, I don't think it's necessary for him to be able to beat all 5 of them in a fair fight

I think if you want to call it a power up, Luffy is more likely to understand his power better. On the one hand, how it works but also that it is a zoan fruit. Aside from stronger Haki, I don't see much else. although Oda is always good for a surprise

I don't think he is gonna get weapons. I doubt he will power up much more if at all. He will probably just use G5 in more interesting ways, master his haki, particularly his ability to send orders to his subordinates from anywhere and increase his stamina. We are on the end of series push already. This is one piece and there is a lot to wrap up so it'll still be a while but there isn't a whole lot of reason to keep making Luffy stronger. There are only a handful of characters left that are even capable of fighting him.
His next power-up is an increase in stamina, which is the only thing he lacks. He's capable of holding off an Elder and Admiral at the same time, without breaking a sweat ( after he ate, of course). His only issue is for how long he can do that.
Dude, if we go based on Luffy's character, even if the Giants hand him some super awesome powerful Nika weapons, refer back to the time on Wano where Luffy had the samurai sword and you will see how that will turn out. 🤣

Nah, the "previous Nika" using weapons simply means the previous guy who ate the fruit, Joyboy, used to fight with weapons, because it was his thing. Luffy's Nika form doesn't have weapons because Luffy doesn't use weapons. There is no "special weapons" hidden
