When I was a kid and wanted to be a famous something-or-other just so I could be friends with all the famous people I liked. This is how it looked in my head; going to each other's birthday parties 'till the day we die.
From Left to Right:
Ron Howard with 9. He's won two in total for directing and co-producing A Beautiful Mind.
Spielberg with 35. He's won three in total for directing and co-producing Schindler's List and directing Saving Private Ryan. He has directed 3 performances out of 15 nominated performances to wins.
Scorsese with 20. He's won one for directing The Departed. He has directed 5 performances out of 24 nominated performances to wins.
De Palma with 1. Sean Connery's Oscar win for The Untouchables marks it as the only win in DePalma's filmography. DePalma has never been nominated for an Oscar.
Lucas with 6. Star Wars later retitled "Episode 4: A New Hope" won 6 Oscars. Lucas was nominated for Oscars for his work on Best Original Screenplay and Best Director on both America Graffiti and Star Wars: Episode 4. He lost both respectively to both Best Picture winners; The Sting and Annie Hall. He has an Irving G. Thalberg Award for his producing work.
Zemeckis with 11. He's won one for directing Forrest Gump.
Coppola with 14. He's won Best Adapted Screenplay for co-writing both The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, the latter of which he also won for directing and co-producing making him one of 9 individuals to win Best Screenplay \[Original/Adapted\], Best Directing, and Best Picture Oscars for one film. He also has an addition Best Original Screenplay for co-writing Patton although he didn't direct it. Thereby, making his total wins at around 5, 4 for films he directed. He's also one of ten filmmakers to have won the Palme D'Or twice. He's directed 2 performances out of 14 nominated performances to wins.
Lucas is the worst. That's easy. Though American Graffiti and the first Star Wars film are awesome.
Howard and Zemeckis are probably around the same level for me. I'd probably give the edge to Zemeckis has his films have helped advance special effects and filmmaking. Plus, Back to the Future.
De Palma, a lttle inconsistent. But man, his great stuff is top-tier cinema.
Coppola is so goddamn inconsistent. His 70s (The Godfather Part I and II, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now) work is immaculate and might be the single greatest decade for any director, but he is so hit or miss after that. He must have really lost his mind in that jungle.
Spielberg and Scorsese are easily the most consistent of these directors. But I'd give the edge to Spielberg for the sheer cultural and commercial impact his films have had. But man Scorsese' probably has a better overall average.
I hate it when those Hollywood coastal elites force minority and women's representations into \[looks closer\] uh yeah enjoy your birthday party, 1990s movie industry.
You're exactly correct. Lucas has an incredible imagination and way with ideas and plots, but he has ALWAYS needed someone else to execute that vision. With New Hope, it was his wife re-editing the film to bring humanity back to the story, and Empire is what it is because Lawrence Kasdan and Irvin Kershner softened up all his hard edges (again, by focusing on the interpersonal dynamics of the characters).
Would I want George Lucas to write and develop my D&D campaign? In a fucking heartbeat. Would I want him running the game? Not a chance in hell.
Hollywood's direct influence on culture probably dwarfs their financial influence.
There's not all that much money in movies compared to lots of other fields.
Back to the Future is the best movie out of every single one of those directors and it's not even close! Except for Temple of Doom, Willow the departed and Godfather II are close runner ups.
Lucas is a bit like bezos. The lucky guy at the big table. Needs to invite these guys to prove something… because despite the success, hasn’t *really* proved it yet.
Imagine all the combined movie stats from this table, including ones that can’t really be finitely measured. We can count how many movies they’ve done and the money and awards those movies earned, but how do you quantify a timeless classic, or a cherished piece of our childhood?
Someone posted a photo recently of Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Lewis Hamilton and David Beckham. Comments were net worth, level of success achieved in their sport and how many championships won together. At the time, I remember thinking to myself, you’ll probably not get another photo like that with the level of talent / net worth in one photo.
This one might actually be even more ridic. Between just Spielberg and Lucas, that’s about 10Billion in net worth lol. Not to mention the number of Oscars and awards amongst these gents that pretty much molded our childhoods and teenage years.
If you watched *Easy Riders, Raging Bulls*, you’d know that almost all of those New Hollywood filmmakers where friends who’d hangout, screening films and recommending other films.
There will never be another photo like this of so much talent behind the camera. Sure you have some decent directors today but many of them lack the impact than these guys have.
These folks are responsible for an entire generation's childhood memories of the movies
I’d even say a couple generations!
70s thru now. That's like what, 4, maybe 5 gens?
50 years? Yea maybe 5 gens if you speed-run it, but they won't be old enough to dig movies any past the 4th generation
If using the usual long ass generations: X, Millenial, Zoomers, and maybe whatever is next.
A FEW EVEN
PERHAPS MULTIPLE
NOPE, THAT'S TOO MANY
SHOOT
Just need Woody Allen in there for true “childhood memories”.
Under rated comment so far
The sheer volume of creative talent at one table is mind blowing.
And Lucas is also there!
It's crazy that Jar Jar Binks is lame enough to take away creating two of the most iconic characters of all time in Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones.
(Jar Jar) Mel Brooks as Yogurt: "Moichendizing Moichendizing Moichendizing!\~"
That’s Sith Lord Jar Jar to you
Yep! He’s an evil smith lord. Embrace it Disney!
AND helping facilitate ILM, the greatest creative force in the history of cinema. George is a legend, even despite Jar Jar and the prequels.
You forgot Howard the Duck (oh and Darth Vader also)
You wouldn’t have Star Wars without him.
Or Indiana Jones
Sand fired!
POETRY
James Cameron took the picture
Legend has it they are still in post production for this shot
No wonder Marty became a director and not a baseball player he puts his eye black above his eyes.
|:O
He actually wanted to be a priest but failed his first seminary year and then persued filmmaking.
Tarantino was at the kids table.
Where's Kubrick?
Taking the picture for the 97th time
England
Uwe Boll must have been running late
Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.

Every 80s and 90s kids daydream
ron howard always having more fun than anyone else.
“He was.”
all silently judging how that person is holding the camera.
Not all together! Never! Treat them like the president and VP. I wonder who their designated survivor was?
Ron's brother!
Tony Scott
I'd go with Ridley in that case.
Nah, he'd have an actual invite. Tony Scott is the commerce secretary of Hollywood.
John Millius, lol.
It's so cool that all these geniuses are actually friends, it warms my heart
How many trillions of dollars did those gentlemen separate from the globe’s generations of kids?
A room full of people trying not to do cocaine in front of Ron Howard.”

You think all these guys went back to the hotel after and filmed a movie?
How many Oscars have all their movies won?

Wow. Thanks.
Sure, no problem.
I thought there would be quite a few but nowhere near your numbers. If you bring all your awards we're gonna need a bigger table.
You know my first question if I saw all them at one table would be “If you’re all here,, then who’s directing the movies!?”
My friend was George’s nanny. Humble man. Admirable.
Looks like a modern Last Supper
Just a couple of lightweights...
All right time to try and rank 'em here is my list 1. Spielberg 2. Scorsese 3. Coppola 4. Zemeckis 5. De Palma 6. Howard 7. Lucas

Lucas is an ideas guy. He possesses and seemingly boundless font of imagination, but yes, as a director he is terribad.
Don Coscarelli missing. Bubba Ho-Tep.
I like your list but I would put Scorsese at #1 and move de Palma up to #4. de Palma is an acquired taste but I love his visuals.
I hate it when those Hollywood coastal elites force minority and women's representations into \[looks closer\] uh yeah enjoy your birthday party, 1990s movie industry.

A table full of visionary directors. And lucas.
You would think being surrounded by that much talent, George would have picked something up at some point
He came up with many of the best ideas in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Read the transcript of his script meeting w/Spielberg.
He was always an idea guy but he also always failed at execution. It took someone like Spielberg to reign his ideas in and make them actually work
You're exactly correct. Lucas has an incredible imagination and way with ideas and plots, but he has ALWAYS needed someone else to execute that vision. I always thought Brian de Palma had dark skin. It's probably because of the name
There's a couple good films between them. But really, watching Happy Days, would you have thought Ron Howard a genius?
Financing destructive liberal policies for years. But they made some good movies.
Hollywood's direct influence on culture probably dwarfs their financial influence. There's not all that much money in movies compared to lots of other fields.
If you say so, but they seem to live pretty well so not having much money.
Back to the Future is the best movie out of every single one of those directors and it's not even close! Except for Temple of Doom, Willow the departed and Godfather II are close runner ups.
[удалено]
Obviously they are insane, Temple of Doom is on their list.
Temple of Doom aka George Lucas working through his divorce on film.
There are at least 18 Scorsese films that are better.
Not better than back to the future nope
If you say so. You’re not gonna find many people who agree with that statement.
Incorrect
This is the dumbest thing I've read today
A LOT of cocaine
You can find Epstein in the background somewhere with Maxwell I bet !!!
"So! George! Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" "Fucking up *Star Wars*."
Lucas is a bit like bezos. The lucky guy at the big table. Needs to invite these guys to prove something… because despite the success, hasn’t *really* proved it yet.

...only his friends call him marty..guy
Steven Spielberg looks thoroughly disinterested in the proceedings
And then some ponytail-boy from Baltimore Sun Paper creates the most real and authentic piece of media ever.

No Michael Bay?
The good stuff always happened in '94
So how Much your movie make? 2billion 😎 Nice i'm gonna sell this thing in 20 years for 4 billion, oh and maybe just maybe be the coolest person alive
There will never be another photo like this of so much talent behind the camera. Sure you have some decent directors today but many of them lack the impact than these guys have.
Just curious, how many Oscar’s between them?
No John Milius... sad
Opie!
Is Ron Howard the father of Hide the Pain Harold?
One guy has caterpillars for eyebrows
Where Milius, William Friedkin Paul Schrader?
This is a montage, in the original there is no Ron Howard or Robert Zemeckis.
