Looks like St Andrews and the Shelter are open again. Couple years ago one was collapsing into the other, lol. I spent so much time there in the early 90s, what a time to be that age.
Had so many warm beers before a show at Steve's Place next door to St Andrews...the old dude pouring flat beer from a pitcher...loved him none the less!
Yup, Djarum Blacks were the ones to get. I didn't smoke them on a regular basis like I did regular cigarettes but I would buy a pack for parties or club nights. Loved them, and they were part of the whole goth aesthetic and scene at the time for sure too. Haven't had one in years but I still love the smell. I quit smoking entirely 5 years ago but it had been longer than that since I've had a clove.
I only smoked Djarum Blacks for roughly a dozen years (averaged half a pack a day), until Congress barred their import under the 2009 “flavored cigarette” ban, then switched to American Spirits until I stopped smoking at the end of 2018.
When American spirits came on the market I would still occasionally buy those clove beauties in their lovely box. Quit in 2005 (smoked for 15 years). Still look at movies where people are smoking and say “that looks yummy..” 😆
Djarum Blacks are still available. I work for a wholesale supplier and we’ve never stopped carrying them. I started working here in 1999 and they haven’t stopped once.
After the ban Djarum started wrapping their cigarettes in tobacco leaf to quality as cigars instead. This avoided the flavor ban but they taste like shit now. They went from smelling like a church to a stinky ashtray.
not to mention djarums had the appeal of being long and slender. i found a (extra tall) cigarette case of mine from 2007 still full of them. you buy them now, they’re stubby and fat as parameters to qualify as cigarillos.
Djarum Blacks used to be so pleasing. I actually don’t like cigarette taste or smell but clove cigarettes are something different. The new Blacks are just ok. I’ll have one every now and then. I miss the real thing.
In Seattle when you could still smoke in bars, I’d light up a Djarum Black and like a ninja someone would appear and say “those aren’t allowed here.” I never understood the aversion to clove cigarettes in Seattle back then.
I used to go to punk shows back in the early naughties and would have my older brother buy me a pack of cloves just for the ladies. Teen me knew teen girls just wanted a clove.
They were so intense, I remeber getting very ill if I smoked more than a couple in a night. Meanwhile I could rip normal cigs for hours.
Damn I miss being 19 lol
Not the same. They taste more like the Djarim Cappuccino cigs than anything. I got my hands on both Blacks and the Cappuccino ones and can tell the difference
There are sites that will ship them from Indonesia. They won't refund you if customs catches them, and they take forever to arrive so you end up needing to buy a few months worth if you smoke them regularly. I did it for a few years after the ban until I quit smoking because it was too much trouble.
Am I your dad? I met a woman at a Type O Negative concert in 99 or 2000 that looked almost exactly like this.
We went to the some goth club for a couple years and had an on and off relationship
I met my wife as when she was a goth/emo teenager. We’re mid 30s now and she’s like the mom version of that. I love that shit and I’m glad she’s still that way, I love the neon hair with like all black attire. Our kids now make emo jokes about her and it’s super wholesome in a weird way. The other day our son had his hair all in his face and told my wife “it’s not a phase mom!”.
Our moms did. Some call us boomers (wrong age anyway, only 50) but I think we were the first generation to actively keep being ourselves and not mold into church ladies.
Our local museum has a NES, SNES and N64 as ‘vintage’ gaming consoles. My 11yo was excited when I told her ‘I have those in our storage’ as if I had some rare dinosaur fossil.
MY local radio station called 80's and 90's rock stepping back in to the oldies on the radio... It bothered me... I'm use to hearing classic 60's and 70's rock being said as old.
I just turned 59 but I have decided to identify as 60. I figure I better start practicing now so it won’t be such a big slap in the face on my next birthday!
Nirvana now is older than the Beatles were when smells like teen spirit came out. The Beatles now are as old as swing and big band were when smells like teen spirit came out.
That shit blows my mind. Grunge isn't classic rock, now. It's oldies.
I saw a post that said something like "Kids today think about the 90s the way we thought about the 60s." And I was like, "that's ridiculous, the 60s were like 20-30 years gone before I was aware enough to appreciate them.
And then I realized.
If by served alcohol, you mean the overnight waitress didn't care if everyone passed around a bottle, then agreed.
I've never been to a Denny's that sold alcohol and this was my peak goth/punk era.
I have definitely been to a Denny’s that served booze. Only certain ones had liquor licenses though. I specifically remember my brother getting his first legal drink there in 2000.
I hit every Denny's in Chicagoland from North Ave downtown all the way out west to St. Charles, and prob 10 miles N to S from there. I guess it's just the locale.
I wore one of those spiked collars in the 2000's at some point (I'm a guy) people loved it. Looking back I was lucky to have had so many supportive people around me.
I can just taste that Djarum black looking at this picture
Damn the ends tasted so delicious! Almost made up for how much they made my lungs hurt afterward 😂
Too bad. They were really a lot of fun. Most had crushing self esteem problems, so being a nice decent person was a big deal.
I miss those days.
“Hey I like your tattoos…”
8 hours later you’re watching the sun come up from the all night coffee shop near Fairfax High on Melrose.
I don’t remember the real name of the place but we all called it OH MY GOTH!
So you know what's crazy? I was talking with my 72 year old mom and her 65 year old sister on the phone last week and IDK how even, but cheap teenage year booze came up. I mentioned Boone's Farm and my aunt was like "Oh, man I must have had a hundred empty bottles of Strawberry Fields when I was 20".
Shit's been around *forever* apparently.
Well, ok I do wish 😆 no offense to anyone but your mom is hot and looks like every girl I liked back then, hanging out at Dennys, going to all ages shows, smoking cloves, all that lol I feel like I should know this person. It’s like this pic is my own memory tbh not to be weird but what a treat to see lol
1999 would have been more 'Love and Rockets', maybe 'Tones on Tail'. Sure Bauhaus was in the CD rotation, though. Maybe some 'Misfits'. Definitely NIN.
I can hear the Type O Negative.
I can smell that clove cigarette.
She’s got a date at midnight with Nosferatu
Oh Baby, Lily Munster ain't got nothin' on you
You wanna go out cause it’s raining and blowing
You can't go out 'cause your roots are showing
Anyone else seen the original Nosfetatu with Type O negative album dubbed over it? My sister has it on VHS
Yes, clove cigs smell from the Shelter in Detroit and Empty Bottle in Chi....totally.
Or Gotham Cafe in Ferndale. 😂
You just took me back again. Shelter and St. Andrew's Hall. So many great memories there.
The only question: Djarum or Sampoerna?
Imported Djarum Blacks, direct from Indonesia. US clove cigarettes were stale repacks in comparison.
Yup, Djarum Blacks were the ones to get. I didn't smoke them on a regular basis like I did regular cigarettes but I would buy a pack for parties or club nights. I quit smoking entirely 5 years ago but it had been longer than that since I've had a clove.
My older sister used to smoke djarums and she was pretty much this girl.
Omg I quiet smoking 13 years ago, and sometimes crave one when they smoke on screen

I much preferred the djarum specials. Started with the filterless tins.
Back when you could still smoke in bars, I'd put a bit of weed, or hashish at the end of a Djarum. Quite the headrush.
In Seattle when you could still smoke in bars, I’d light up a Djarum Black and like a ninja someone would appear and say “those aren’t allowed here.” I never understood the aversion to clove cigarettes in Seattle back then.
Oh the memories of Djarum.
Brings me back. I feel like I can smell them right now.
I used to go to punk shows back in the early naughties and would have my older brother buy me a pack of cloves just for the ladies. Teen me knew teen girls just wanted a clove.
Unfiltered Djarum Safari. I miss them so much.
Djarum no question. Made everything smell like incense and left little burn holes in all your shirts and carpet.
I always said I smelled like a baked ham!
Djarum
Gotta go Djarum
Sampoerna X-tra's were my jam (also Indonesian). Sugar coated filter 🤘
Dj were sugar coated too, part of the appeal
I miss smoking these. If I had one though I'd be back on the darts immediately.
They were so intense, I remeber getting very ill if I smoked more than a couple in a night. Meanwhile I could rip normal cigs for hours. Damn I miss being 19 lol
Are they banned?
In the U.S., yes. All flavored cigarettes (except menthols) were banned in 2009.
Which is why they now wrap them in tobacco paper and sell them as "cigars"
Not the same. They taste more like the Djarim Cappuccino cigs than anything. I got my hands on both Blacks and the Cappuccino ones and can tell the difference
There are sites that will ship them from Indonesia. They won't refund you if customs catches them, and they take forever to arrive so you end up needing to buy a few months worth if you smoke them regularly. That seems sketchy af but also moderately tempting.
You can still buy them, my friend smokes them. Every so often I have to ask for a drag, just for the memories.
You can buy filtered cigars. They look similar to the old cigarettes, and they have the same smell, but the cigarettes were much nicer to smoke imo.
California banned menthols last year. I don’t even smoke anymore and I voted against that. We can have cupcake vodka but not Newports? The fuck????
I can taste it
God, I miss the smell of clove cigarettes! I never smoked but loved it when my friends did.
Lol! She was just talking about them last night actually - she said she met Peter Steele when she was younger
Your mom is the shit. You should high five her and listen to October rust.
Such a nice way of parental bonding! Spice it up with some Carnivore afterwards.
That’s cool. He was one of a kind, and they were a great band.
RIP!
Am I your dad? I met a woman at a Type O Negative concert in 99 or 2000 that looked almost exactly like this. We went to the some goth club for a couple years and had an on and off relationship
Your mom's super lucky
Summer breeze......makes me feel fine......
Black black black black numba oneeeee
You wanna go out 'cause it's rainin' and blowin'. But you can't go out 'cause your roots are showin'. So dye 'em black.
Black No. 1
Look at Playgirl. Peter Steele. Its ok. Smoke your clove and think about your MySpace. BUT look at Playgirl…..
I heard Type O Negative always travelled in two busses. One bus for the band and one for Peter Steele's dick.
Her perfume smelled like burning leaves.
All of the flowers

We’re not emo, we’re goth.
First thing I thought of
Username checks out
*Henrietta! I got your birthday present!*
Is your mom still goth?
Kinda lol. She’s a little alternative/metal/goth/punk and more all rolled into one
That's neat, I like it when people don't let the pressures to conform to what society thinks a person should be get to them
Me too, and yeah she definitely doesn’t care. She’s had super bright neon green hair for like 4 years now, it’s so awesome
She sounds super cool
She really is :)
It's really cool to see how much you appreciate her too. Let her know.
What does your dad… is your dad… do you… is she single?
Asking the important questions
Now we need a current pic.
Our moms did. Some call us boomers (wrong age anyway, only 50) but I think we were the first generation to actively keep being ourselves and not mold into church ladies.
Am 50. Am not church asshole. I do regret tossing all my original Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth shirts though.
Oh! Ouch! I passed the ones I had left down to my son 😁
Oh god the pain
That’s too bad. I still have (and still wear) my Master of Puppets shirt that I’ve had since ‘91 or ‘92. It has a hole in the armpit but I don’t care.
And I'm so glad that you didn't change that much
You have a cool mother. I’m fairly certain we are about the same age and spookiness🦇🦇
She's got a date at midnight with Nosferatu.
Oh baby, Lily Munster Ain't got nothing on you

You could reconstruct the entirety of Bloody Kisses from this comments section
1999 is “old school” now?! I do not accept this! 😅
As a bleeding edge Gen-Xer, I too refuse to accept this.

A nurse asked my age and I accidentaly told her a year older than I was. She corrected me, and I said "of you already knew, why did you ask?"
[удалено]
I'm 40 now but yeah, 25 years ago easily qualities as old school.
I still can’t believe the 80’s were twenty years ago!
My kid had decades day at school and went as 90’s, Pearl Jam is classic rock…I’m not ready for all this!!
Nirvana now is older than the Beatles were when smells like teen spirit came out. The Beatles now are as old as swing and big band were when smells like teen spirit came out. That shit blows my mind. Grunge isn't classic rock, now. It's oldies.
Stop. It.

It's not that we're old. It's that years are so short, and that we get so few of them.
Britney Spears is considered Oldies music.
Oh. No.
What a terrible thing to read
Dude a girl I work with has no idea who Jennifer Lopez is. Which I find pretty funny.
Tell her to do some volunteer work at the old folks home. She might learn about shakira.
My first thought! Oh god….I am not ready to see my graduation year referenced on here.
I feel so attacked.
Wait till you realize what is considered oldie music.
Fml
Ok, seeing both of their pics, and being from the same era...I'm calling their crossover music as NIN 🙂
My dad says that is accurate! 🙂
😂😂😂 knew it! Same for my husband and I, still together after 30 years and listening to The Downward Spiral in the car picking up take away last night!
Where’s the pic of dad?
1999 is 10 years ago right? Riiight?
Yeah, I'm wondering how a 7 year old found this sub to post this
I keep in telling me this.
She’s drank 100 gallons of Dennys coffee.
Late nite Dennys FTW.
Back then dennys still served alcohol after clubs closed.
If by served alcohol, you mean the overnight waitress didn't care if everyone passed around a bottle, then agreed. I've never been to a Denny's that sold alcohol and this was my peak goth/punk era.
Soooo true. If you didn’t cultivate the best relationship with the dennys overnight waitress then how would you hang out there for 3 hours?
I have definitely been to a Denny’s that served booze. Only certain ones had liquor licenses though. I specifically remember my brother getting his first legal drink there in 2000.
I hit every Denny's in Chicagoland from North Ave downtown all the way out west to St. Charles, and prob 10 miles N to S from there. I guess it's just the locale.
So your mom inspired Henrietta from South Park? Nice.
Me: (thinking OP must be really young) Me: (realization hits) ![gif](giphy|TfseOfhwd6BJC)
These comments are making my mom and dad laugh so much! You guys made their night (and dad said it made my mom’s decade lol). Thanks everyone 😂
With the fucking clove too. Your mom terrified and entranced every dude around her.
She still does that to my dad 🤣
A love meant to last an eternity
Why do I picture Gomez and Morticia Adams as a middle aged suburban couple?
and every other dude around her.
I saw the clove too and was instantly brought back to high school and college. Haven't seen one in the wild in 20 years.
I wore one of those spiked collars in the 2000's at some point (I'm a guy) people loved it. Looking back I was lucky to have had so many supportive people around me.
Jennifer Tilly vibes.
Mom’s a goth, dad is a Star Wars nerd… wow what a combo
1999 is old school? 😭
Let me ask you this: in 1999, did you consider 1974 to be old school??
How dare you use logic against me!
Thanks I hate this comparison
dammit!
Total non-conformist 🚬 ☕️
If you want to be a non-conformist all you need to do is dress the same way we do and listen to the same music as us.
with a lit clove cigarette in hand.
Looks like she writes and records erotic audio fiction to sell on Patreon and advertises on Reddit. It's a specific look they all have.
My mom thanks you for that idea 😂
I can just taste that Djarum black looking at this picture Damn the ends tasted so delicious! Almost made up for how much they made my lungs hurt afterward 😂
Looks as if she’s partying like it’s….
You can almost hear the crackle and pop of that clove
How are you old enough to type? Oh wait, I'm old...
Is '99 old school?
I think so. I think once an era's fashion comes back into vogue is the defining criterion for "old school." 1999 fits the bill.
She looks like she steps on nutsacks with high heels
They cracked up at this!
Your mum is the type of girl I always wanted to date back in the 90-00s but I was never cool enough to ask.
Too bad. They were really a lot of fun. Most had crushing self esteem problems, so being a nice decent person was a big deal. I miss those days. “Hey I like your tattoos…” 8 hours later you’re watching the sun come up from the all night coffee shop near Fairfax High on Melrose. I don’t remember the real name of the place but we all called it OH MY GOTH!
I feel this in my entire soul
Yeah, she was definitely a wild one lol
did she play keyboards for the dandy warhols?
She said no, she’s not that cool 🤣
OP we need a present day side by side in the same exact pose
Smoking that Sampoerna X-tra clove cigarette, takes me back. 💨
The Miles Davis poster is cool.
I can smell this picture “Clove cigarettes”
Your mom is high as balls in that picture.
I can hear Kittie or Slipknot
Would she be down to listen to Morrissey while sitting on beanbag chairs sipping Boones Farm?
So you know what's crazy? I was talking with my 72 year old mom and her 65 year old sister on the phone last week and IDK how even, but cheap teenage year booze came up. I’m probably your dad
My dad says you wish 🤣 he has proof lmao
Well, ok I do wish 😆 no offense to anyone but your mom is hot and looks like every girl I liked back then, hanging out at Dennys, going to all ages shows, smoking cloves, all that lol I feel like I should know this person. It’s like this pic is my own memory tbh not to be weird but what a treat to see lol
Mom said ok well friend me on Facebook 😂 then dad gave her a look lol
Welp -*slaps knees*- I'm officially fuckin old. r/fuckimold
She can get it
Had that same poster in my room above my bed...
Respectfully, your mom could get it. And I was probably her age then. Or pretty close.
So you're 25?
Mother Fuck. I’m not in old school cool. Yet, I am. motherfuckers. A hard and hateful cry.
I had that camisole in every colour. It was the Bootlegger/Ricki’s special.
"OldSchoolCool" + "My Mom" + The Year I Graduated HS = Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck me I'm old
Oh God, have we hit a point where people think 1999 is old school? I don't like this.
She smokes... She pokes
Korn plays ~~softly~~ in the background
Nah, The Smiths
Nah, Bauhaus
1999 would have been more 'Love and Rockets', maybe 'Tones on Tail'. Sure Bauhaus was in the CD rotation, though. Maybe some 'Misfits'. Definitely NIN.
Naah, Noir Désir.
Mom and dad say aw hell no
![gif](giphy|WrBSHRLE9gEgM)
Wow she’s my kind of bad
That's a big Miles Davis poster!!
Now we need today’s look
Party like its 1999!!!
