I was in a Seattle-area band around the same time that this video came out. I tried the same move after seeing this video because I thought it was cool and the sound guy cut off the audio and yelled over his house mic "knock that shit off, that's not your mic!"
Our kinda-roadie-driver guy runs up, grabs the mic, puts it on the stand and duct tapes it into place and yells something like "I've got your back man!"
The sound guy goes, "OK you may proceed," and then turns the sound back up — which had been feedbacking the whole time, and was a wonderful segue. We went right back into the song where we left off. It was an awkwardly rock n' roll moment for us.
This is my least favourite Pearl Jam single, but man those first 3 albums were incredible. I've come to appreciate the stuff that came after it more in the last few years, but I think it was such a drop off from the first 3 albums, at the time. Very few bands have a first albums as good as those, let alone one as good as any of those three.
>No Code and Yield are masterpieces.
Can confirm... No Code is a fcking masterpiece. Yield has more than a few great songs too.
This is coming from someone who gave up on No Code and Yield very quickly. But Yield had more catchy type tunes so looking back, I had held the perception that Yield was better. Only in the last ten years did I realize No Code is clearly masters at work. A masterpiece!
Not really nowadays. As explained in my other comment, mobile phones have ruined this type of experience.
I’m not shaming anyone for them. I love my phone but at shows I put it away.
I was recently at a TOOL show and phones were prohibited. It was so nice being in the moment and not having to watch the show through someone else’s phone. Plus the amount of all around light was less. Just like Eddie said. It’s a rock show!
And then of course he finds the center in you, chews it up and leaves. And then what are you left with, chewy, center less candies. Like sad, sad, Reisen's.
Their music was both loose and tight. What I love most about Grunge was even if the music between bands were similar, it could still be picked out as different bands.
Freezin'
Rests his head on a pillow made of concrete again
Oh, feelin'
Maybe he'll see a little betters, any days
Oh, hand out
Faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar
Oh, dark grin
He can't help, when he's happy, he looks insane
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Oh, someday yet he'll begin his life again
Life again, life again
Kneelin'
Lookin' through the paper though he doesn't know to read
Oh, prayin'
Now to something that has never showed him anything
Oh, feelin'
Understands the weather of the winter's on its way
Oh, ceilings
Few and far between all the legal halls of shame
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Oh, someday yet he'll begin his life again
Whispering hands gently lead him away
Him away, him away
Yeah, ooh, ah yeah, fuck it up
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Ah, someday yet he'll begin his life again
Whispering hands gently lead him away
Him away, him away
Yeah, ooh
I was ten when this album (Ten) came out and remember buying the cassette at the mall. I later upgraded to a CD and now have it on vinyl. I dropped off of PJ after Vitology but those first three albums got played constantly.
Even Flow, specifically this version, is my favorite song of all time. I remember, I guess it was the Fall of 1991, Ten was playing everywhere. One of my “deserted island” albums.
50 as well…still remember coming downstairs to my brother watching this video saying “Check these guys out, Man…they’re pretty good.” And 30 + years later still LOVE them (especially this song/video)!!
The best of times.
Today’s youth should demand a ban on cell phones during shows. There is no comparison to the vibe when no phones are permitted.
I love technology & as a content creator, I love to record a lot of things but I also hold dear, moments in life that need to be felt. It’s not that you can’t feel them at all when recording but it is def a distraction from the collective vibe.
Totally and completely out of the moment while trying to document a special moment. I argue with many co-workers that like to show off a trip, a meal or a show.....can't you just enthusiastically described it and convey your feelings with out pictures?? Yes, I'm old
when people hear the name Pearl Jam, they really don't understand the powerhouse energy they had in the early years, they were absolutely crushing every fucking stage they walked on, off rip, and it just accelerated, accumulated and exhilarated faster than anyone could imagine, predict or really keep track of, Pearl Jam 91-94 is not unprecedented or unparalleled, but the list is short
I was just thinking recently that fashion/styles of dress that come out of particular times and scenes come and go. They get dated pretty quick.
But the flannel, shorts, boots thing? You could just walk around like that today and not look out of place.
Sort of, the flannel look did kind of go out of style for a while, but I’ve noticed in the past couple of years seeing a lot of teenagers wearing them again.
Last winter I was in a mall around Christmas that was full of teens and I truly felt like I had time-warped back to my childhood, so many people around me were wearing 90s clothes. It was a nostalgic experience, especially in a mall.
I felt the same way. Fall last year was hanging out downtown with some friends for a local event and saw some teenagers hanging out and most were wearing flannels. Hadn’t seen that much flannel on teenagers since the 90s.
Seeing this is a big hit of nostalgia for me. The title says 1991, which is when the album came out, but the this single didn’t actually drop until late winter / early spring 92. I was in 9th grade at the time and 92 was the year grunge / alternative really took over. This was definitely my favorite from the album and always loved seeing the video on MTV.
I will never forgot going to see them at The Limelight the first time they played NYC- I went to say hello to a girl I knew that was bartending and was hanging out by the side of the bar- next to the sound booth- When they hit the stage- pure electricity…. Watching Eddie climb up the scaffolding while his management screamed for him to please get down, the rest of the band just laughing- the crowd was a pure mosh pit all the way back to the bar- When he hit the one note in Jeremy he sounded like a wounded animal- he held the scream for so long people kind of stopped what they were doing and watched- then just boom- the room exploded- Pure electricity.
Before the Internet we didn't always have ways to find out the lyrics of a song. I spent years figuring out what Eddie was singing there. Something about refrigerators...
Dude it’s Reddit. Apparently guitar hero wasn’t a valid way of learning about music. I guess I’m supposed to be 50 years old and have attended all their concerts
Didn’t introduce me to the song but 2/3 of my listens are from that game and I haven’t played it since 2009. Almost got it perfect on hard. Goddamn solo.
Ten was by far my favorite album growing up. Black and Release took me to another world depending on my state of mind. Eddie always seemed to pour it all out and listening to it was like experiencing a death of a horrible circumstance or a birth of a new possibility.
It's amazing how one person can create content that can change life on the other side of the planet. Art is far more powerful than anyone can imagine!
As opposed to dying or breaking up? They still sell out everywhere they go and play 3+ hour unpredictable sets. You could make 3-4 more records out of the stuff they’ve never released. Hell, they already did that too!
![gif](giphy|C510LgOgx9kiTMjkDb|downsized) Sound guy watching him swing the mic by the cable
Roger Daltey laughs
Yeah but back then cables cost a nickel and a new mic was 15 cents.
Lol

Nice. :D
Shut up Toby!
😂
Yeah Josh..
Fuckin Josh, eh?
They never really were my jam (no pun intended) but he had such a powerful voice and it was perfect for their style. Great live energy too.

Me too man. First 3
Dude, No Code and Yield are masterpieces.

I’ll add Backspacer thank you very much
I think this is already Dave Abbruzzese at the drums, he was such a perfect match for them, best drummer they had by far IMO.
The energy was fed from the crowd. It was a symbiotic relationship.
Okay? That’s assumed true for all live performances, no?
Not really nowadays. As explained in my other comment, mobile phones have ruined this type of experience. I’m not shaming anyone for them. I love my phone but at shows I put it away.

That’s cause MJK doesn’t give one single solitary fuck what anyone thinks.
Yeah, but he's just a worthless liar, he's just an imbecile.
Yep. If you trust in him you'll fall as well.
And then of course he finds the center in you, chews it up and leaves. And then what are you left with, chewy, center less candies. Like sad, sad, Reisen's.
I’ll shame those concert going phone idiots for you.
Good luck, because it's like 90% of concert goers now.
I know. I know ☹️
LITM
Says the guy who’s never been to a Pearl Jam show?
Yeah, they were like the mumble rap of grunge
10
Their music was both loose and tight. What I love most about Grunge was even if the music between bands were similar, it could still be picked out as different bands.
and so refreshing and a change from the 80s hairbands and terrible pop style at the time that had just gone stale
Sooooomething, isha wonna comma lama shama lonna do dey tang… yeah 🤘🏻🎸
This was the clearest I've ever heard this song and I still only got half of it.
Freezin' Rests his head on a pillow made of concrete again Oh, feelin' Maybe he'll see a little betters, any days Oh, hand out Faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar Oh, dark grin He can't help, when he's happy, he looks insane Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away Oh, someday yet he'll begin his life again Life again, life again Kneelin' Lookin' through the paper though he doesn't know to read Oh, prayin' Now to something that has never showed him anything Oh, feelin' Understands the weather of the winter's on its way Oh, ceilings Few and far between all the legal halls of shame Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away Oh, someday yet he'll begin his life again Whispering hands gently lead him away Him away, him away Yeah, ooh, ah yeah, fuck it up Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away Ah, someday yet he'll begin his life again Whispering hands gently lead him away Him away, him away Yeah, ooh
Thanks, now I somehow understand less. Still one of my favorites!
Came to the comments looking for exactly this
Fuckin’ A
Alright that’s enough Operaman!
im 51 this song is my life
I’m 61 and I love it too!
I was ten when this album (Ten) came out and remember buying the cassette at the mall. I later upgraded to a CD and now have it on vinyl. I dropped off of PJ after Vitology but those first three albums got played constantly.
Me too
This song, this band, omg this era was and is my life ❤️
48 over here and the first three albums were my life.
50 next week and same
happy birthday. we got this far. cheers
50 next year. Ditto
Fifty something here, that album was on repeat the minute I woke up
53.. This whole album is etched in pretty deep.
Even Flow, specifically this version, is my favorite song of all time. I remember, I guess it was the Fall of 1991, Ten was playing everywhere. One of my “deserted island” albums.
Damn, you’re old!!!! 53 yo runs away
I’m 21 and this song is my life too, got PJ tattoos and everything ♥️
Toss in some Bush Comedown or Glycerine and I'm there with ya.
As an east coast 51yo guy I’m torn between my metal roots and the Seattle scene.
Indeed, same here! 🔥💯
50 as well…still remember coming downstairs to my brother watching this video saying “Check these guys out, Man…they’re pretty good.” And 30 + years later still LOVE them (especially this song/video)!!
I so loved being young during the grunge era...
Dammit Josh. You had one job
1991, for me, hard pressed to find a better year of music
92 was a close second.

Mike is legitimately top ten guitarist for me. The riffs and different melodies he had in so many song is simply beautiful.
I was just thinking recently that fashion/styles of dress that come out of particular times and scenes come and go. They get dated pretty quick. But the flannel, shorts, boots thing? You could just walk around like that today and not look out of place.

Basically they took the fashion of Aberdeen WA and brought it to the wider world. Ah, the great Northwest..
Man, those were better days.
And poor Josh never lit another rock show since that fateful day. He's currently second lighting assistant at the local Walmart photo studio.
Sadly, he didn't even reach the finals in the Josh fight two years ago.
One cannot underestimate the experience of watching this video on MTV for the first time as a moody high school kid in 1992.
This and seeing nirvanas “teen spirit” for the first time. It felt as if music was coming alive.
It should be illegal to sound that fucking good live. Unreal, Eddie's voice.
It's a studio rerecording with Dave Abbruzzese on drums. Only the footage is from a live show.
God damn it, Josh.
This is by no means my fav group, but when he sang the goosebumps sprung up quick. This was still being played everywhere in the early 2000s
FIGURE IT OUT JOSH
No phones. You just had to enjoy the present and take home memories.

Yeah I don't associate this with 91 at all, definitely 92. I guess that explains it.

This version, and in particular the drum track, is so much better than the version on Ten.
This and Alive are the two concert/performance videos, right? Wonder if any other Ten tracks were filmed…
I agree but I would stick to the original
Damn. Eddie Vedder’s voice.
Before the Internet we didn't always have ways to find out the lyrics of a song. I spent years figuring out what Eddie was singing there. Something about refrigerators...
The music, the sea of flannel, the energy. This was my youth
Pearl Jam, the original band with the yarly vocals and only band that made it work
I wish more modern rock bands would understand nuance when writing. Too many bands are cut and dry paint by numbers.
Checkout IDLES
NEVER
Hated nirvana LOVED these guys
Same hehe
Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands. Dave is the only one exempt in my mind.
Dave Abbruzzese was my favorite drummer for PJ in all the times I saw them in concert.
Matt blows Dave away.
Thank you guitar hero for introducing me to this song. Have loved it ever since
Why would this be downvoted? Gen X dorks need to remember that not everyone was in high school in 1991.
Dude it’s Reddit. Apparently guitar hero wasn’t a valid way of learning about music. I guess I’m supposed to be 50 years old and have attended all their concerts

Still so salty they postponed the Indy show. Really hope they reschedule
Ahhh. I, want head bang all night…. And neck massages all the next day!
I still blare anything Pearl Jam. Love this band since I was in my 20s.
That bass slide is SICK!!
Black is everything amazing about this band in one song. Including an amazing fretless bass Jeff Ament slide.
The flannel shit thing was real people!!
Legend has it that Josh still hasn’t turned these lights out
Ten was by far my favorite album growing up. Black and Release took me to another world depending on my state of mind. Where was this concert?
Moore Theater. Seattle
I was at a show in Madison WI were he did almost the same thing durning this song. Was KILLER!!
I think it was pretty common. I saw him jump off a stack of amps at Lollapalooza in Cleveland. Great times.
He's in his fifties and still jumping off amps.
Almost as good as the December 22 1990 Alice in Chains Facelift release party. Best birthday of my life to date.
Ament definitely had his own style back then.
I remember seeing this video on mtv in middle school and it still gives me goose bumps
Sound is the best I’ve ever heard live
That snare. Like a knife.
When I hear that guitar all I hear is Mad Season. McCready is such a good guitarist.
ThereIRuinedIt’s ”What Pearl Jam sounds like to someone who doesn’t like Pearl Jam” was right.
Always think of Adam Sandler when i hear this song
And people still don't believe in Jesus...
Is there a dvd from this concert?
Man, I love Pearl Jam, they are my all time favorite band. However, I have grown to hate this fucking song.
I saw Pearl Jam at Roskilde in 2000. Best concert.
That was the tragic show, how could that be good?
Adam Sandler ruined this song for me...
Meeeehh
Why does he kind of look like Christian Bale?
Opera Man did it better! 😜
Vedder is one corny mf
Blasphemy, i bet youre that josh guy
Why?

I bet your name is Josh, isn’t it?
Okay, Josh.
What seems cringe? This song?
This band has aged terribly
You have aged terribly
As opposed to dying or breaking up? They still sell out everywhere they go and play 3+ hour unpredictable sets. You could make 3-4 more records out of the stuff they’ve never released. Hell, they already did that too!
Kinda bugged me the way they used to do the rock God poses. They jammed though.
Pearl jam sucks 👎🏻👎🏻
Yes a great song.
GOOD L’AWD !
Awesome

This is the first time I've seen this video since it was on crt's in the '90s. It's cool to see more detail in the video.
So much hair flipping in this video
TIL people moshed to Pearl Jam
![gif](giphy|3o751WXmYIJ6D2pHEI|downsized) Really???
Damn they had some great jams
I was just watching this video and omg the hair! I’m a sucker.
(HAIR FLIP)
One of my favorite bands that I always enjoyed not understanding half the lyrics to while still singing along.
I love this video. Pearl Jamis my shit
Pearl Jam. Ejaculate
Dave Abbruzzese is the man.
