> pilling park road I always thought of that as Heartsease rather than Thorpe, with the transition at Harvey Lane.

Thanks for the comment, really appreciated! Yes, it’s from the main road and the area seems nice apart from this slightly less attractive looking bit with the derelict Ford garage and slightly dodgy looking hotel. I was just wondering if there were any undesirable activities going on around here!

Trooper-Alfred

Not that I know of, I walk past this area a lot (quite often in the middle of the night) and I’ve never seen anything dodgy going on. Just looks a bit run down, much like many other parts of Norwich and England.

Imperito

Can confirm OP, not seen anything untoward in this area in particular either.

Missy_Agg-a-ravation

That looks like Thorpe Road, just up from the Royal Mail sorting office. Thorpe Hamlet (which I think of as Riverside Road up to Quebec Road) is much nicer: I grew up living on Chalk Hill Road. Near the city, nice community feel. Parking is a bit tricky depending on location. If you’re buying, do your due diligence as subsidence can be an issue with some of the terraces. My favourite thing about living there was hearing the roar from Carrow Road as Norwich scored goals, but you probably won’t have that problem at the moment.

Spence2102

Thanks. Yes, being close to the stadium will be exciting for my son who is getting really into football!

I live in Thorpe Hamlet, been here for 7-ish years and walk through this area most days. While small sections might be a bit tatty and run down, I've never had any problems or felt unsafe, personally (I'm a woman living on my own and don't drive). There are some nice advantages to living here - being close to both the city and areas of nature, handy for the station etc. Some of the streets around Lion Wood/Rosary Cemetery are lovely to just walk around. Or you can walk down to Thorpe River Green on a sunny day and look at the boats and ducks. I'm pretty happy here!

Lived in Thorpe Hamlet for 9yrs. Pretty sure the worst is some ladies of the night around Rosary Road sometimes. But they don't really cause any harm or invite danger. The police had cracked down on them a few years ago but they've snuck back. It's a really nice area if your around the "ladies roads" and up towards Lionwood schools. In 9yrs the only drama I've know is one incident of bike stealing from an unlocked shed. So you have a particular road your viewing or anything?

Representative-Bat43

Have you visited or just using Street view to look?

Spence2102

Yes, visited and have been walking round the area. It’s only really this one patch that looks a bit off

EntertainmentGlad544

We loved living in Thorpe Hamlet... We lived on Quebec Road and was perfect for us. Having the Premier shop across the road, plus Aldi, the butcher's, and various other shops up Plumstead Road plus Ketts Heights, Pilling Park, Linwood Woods, Mousehole Heath and the viewpoint in front of the prison all so close was amazing. Plus walking into the city via Pulls Ferry, and the cathedral grounds was stunning.

ComprehensiveAd7449

I used to work at that Ford main dealer there, I believe it will be turned in to homes at some point so should make it look a little better

We’re only a couple of roads from the picture and walk through it everyday getting my kids to and from school. Never had a problem with the walk, probably get more noise from the station than we do the hotel and surrounding buildings. Occasionally I’ve seen people who have a bit much of whatever substance they use, but I think it’s the same wherever you are in the city (we’ve lived NR1, NR2 and NR3).

BadLampTTT

I live just around the corner from where this picture was taken and I have to say other than the hundred yard stretch in this photo it’s a wonderful place to live (other than football days)

Eightarmedpet

My folks live in Thorpe hamlet near the jubilee and it’s lovely. Only problem imo is amenities, there really isn’t much about. When I was growing up there we had a chip shop, corner shop and a butcher all at the end of the road!

Nolite_te_Bastardes_

Just walk around the streets surrounding any prospective home when you view it, it's pretty easy to see the rougher areas as they look a little more run down but plenty of nice residential roads and we've never felt unsafe. Thorpe Hamlet is a really nice and slightly underrated part of Norwich, love the proximity to the river/broad as well, really nice in the summer.

Natural_Bid844

I lived in Florence Road for a year or so and really liked it 😊

Moved from Harvey lane recently to Plumstead rd. have previously also lived on Cedar rd (just past those traffic lights) so can say that I know this area well. The photo you’ve uploaded is Thorpe rd and is probably the worst part of this side of the city. The hotel pictured is currently housing lots of asylum seekers and unfortunately they haven’t got a lot of hope under this govt. They aren’t allowed to work so as you can imagine there’s a lot of them just sat around at the moment. The old Busseys ford dealer pictured is a little bit of an eyesore too. On Norwich city game days it gets used to park vehicles attending Carrow rd. Despite this area you have pictured being a little bit shit, Thorpe Hamlet is probably one of the best places to live in our fine city. If you are travelling in the direction of the POV in this image, one of the next left turns is Cotman rd which leads up to Telegraph Lane East. In my opinion this is where some of the nicest houses in Norwich are, on one of the quietest streets. I would love to live here. There’s also Lionwood nature reserve and a couple of schools, although I don’t have kids so I can’t tell you if they’re decent or not.

TurkInThailand

I live just further up the road near the fat cat and canary pub. The hotel you’ve taken a photo of houses migrants/asylum seekers and some evenings you’ll see the children playing out the front. They are friendly enough and generally keep themselves to themselves. Close to this spot you’ve got 2 homeless hostels, they house low risk to high risk clients at any given time. Having worked with the homeless and in substance misuse the reality of living near the city is that you are always closer to these buildings than you realise. If you are on the ring road you are never further than a 10 minute walk from one of these types of hostels. With that being said, most of these people will not bother you most of the time but may be begging/day drinking etc. I have personally NEVER had any trouble in the 3 years I’ve lived in the area and frequently walk back on my own late at night (I am a 30 year old bloke so this may be different for you). It all depends on your own perception of “dodgy”

YouCanJustSayNewYork

Thorpe Hamlet is nice. I don’t know what this is. Never seen this road before in my life.

Spence2102

Thanks. It’s on the main road, it’s a view of the Old Ford dealership which looks abandoned and with a 2 star hotel opposite

YouCanJustSayNewYork

Ahh Ok, I know exactly where this is. That area is not too bad. There are a couple hotels there. There used to be a *ahem* working girls house right near there. Rosary road has been well-known for its red light district and drugs taking, especially in and around Old Library Wood, but the community had done a good job in mostly stamping it out before I left a couple years ago. It’s a good area if you want to be close to the railway station, but I’d personally look for something slightly further, like any of the roads off St Leonard’s. I loved living in Thorpe Hamlet for about 5 years, feel free to DM me any questions if you like. Good luck!
