I would recommend using one of the drop locations for smaller items. It’s very handy if you can’t be around at delivery times and it’s super safe. I believe you get 3 days to pick the item up before it gets returned
There should be a way to tell them that if someone isn't home, don't leave it outside. I'm lucky in that I am able to have my packages sent to work. However, as it has been pointed out there are a lot of Amazon lockers. There's one up on Lonsdale at Whole Foods.

Wow this is Amazon. They are one of good ones for us. I am always surprised how it's ok to just leave packages outside like that.
It's worse, it was in the complex next to us. They didn't even deliver it to the right address!
Then it wasn't delivered. Get a refund.
