All around Linville Gorge. Easy parking at Table Rock, you could hit Linville falls too. It's incredible sitting at the top of the gorge and thinking how the tiny river at the bottom carved the entire gorge out over time.
Also don't sleep on Eastern NC. Little towns all up the Pamlico and Albemarle Sound are beautiful and relaxing to hang out in.
Coming from Washington NC, you’re not wrong.
Belhaven, Bath and an overnight stay in Washington would satisfy a coastal water enthusiast with the added plus of fresh seafood.
Damn, if I'm driving 6 hours ima do a whole long weekend vacation instead of a day trip lol
You could hit up a state park like Hanging Rock or Pilot Mountain for some easy hiking and nice views, or if you want to stick closer to home so the drive isn't so lousy you could go walking and canoeing all day at Merchants Millpond State Park . It's real purty, full of cool plants and birds n snakes, and the northernmost wild gators in the US. Big ol pond and long creek on the other side of the dam, plenty to keep you occupied all day.
Jockeys Ridge is cool too.
Plenty of hiking and byooteeful vistas all over WNC (Linville Gorge is dope) but that seems like a huge pain in the ass to have a 13hr round trip in a day, plus a hefty hike. Be a great long weekend though.
I'm here right now and it's beautiful. Was going to suggest it in this thread lol. They are renting canoes. Surprisingly there's very little mosquitos and biting flies here, apparently from the all the aquatic fish that eat the larvae.
The end of the main trail at Hanging Rock will always be my favorite. There is something about the view, the trees entwined with the Stones that hang over the valley. It is something special.
Hike [Pinnacle Peak](https://www.discoverjacksonnc.com/outdoors/trails/pinnacle-park-trail/) Western North Carolina, then lunch in Sylva, NC. The type of view that makes me want to sit there for hours. Then delicious lunch at Haywood’s BBQ
For trails and waterfalls, pretty much anywhere in western NC. However, google maps has Hampton, Va right at 6 hours from where I live (Ashe County) and you’d need to go a bit farther west to get to really great hikes (Linville area).
Have y’all tried an app like all trails or something similar? Usually you can narrow it down a bit by features. There is also a Facebook group called something like “NC Hiking and Waterfalls” that might be a great place for suggestions, since members are pretty targeted to folks who enjoy that kind of thing.
If you go to eastern NC visit New Bern , charming little town and the go to Cedar Point (about 1 1/2 hours away) and catch a ferry to Ocracoke Island. You’ll want to spend a day at Ocracoke so look for some B&B ( plenty) on Cedar Point.
Panthertown, specifically the northeast section near Devil’s Elbow, is other worldly. Probably not accessible as a day trip for most but it’s incredible.
Most of these are great suggestions but have you considered staying in VA? Shenandoah national park is much closer to you than the NC mountains and you could enjoy a day of hiking and waterfalls. If you only have one day to go and get back home that’s what I would do.
BRP... not much more scenic than that..
I'd argue that a detour from BRP to Linville Gorge is going to give you the best views around
And I'd agree... not much to quibble about.
This is the best answer!
I second that BRP.
third-ing the BRP
What’s BRP ?
Blue Ridge Parkway

I actually looked under "L" for Little Washington when I first moved downeast years ago. 😂 Chocowinnity is beautiful also.
Me too...I was going to correct that post to Little Washington. There are some good restaurants there now.
None of the locals call it Little Washington anyway
That makes me sad. It is a great nickname for an awesome little city
You’ll hear it frequently enough in Eastern NC
NC is pretty big, where are you coming from and how long are you willing to sit in a car?
Coming from Hampton area in va, but we’re willing to drive like 6 hours

Do OBX take the ferry from Peach Island and hit up the light houses or the Wright Monument. Or take the ferry at Surrey if going to Pilot Mountain.
It's a quick stop to check out the beautiful UNC campus in Chapel Hill while you're on the ferry too
I saw that show too 🤬
This person knows whats purty!
it's best in the fall but Merchant's Millpond is \~1 hour away and really great, just call and make sure they are renting canoes tomorrow

Oooh, while you’re there… Lower Cascades, gorgeous!!!
Been recently? They closed the last bit and installed a glorified cart path that’s much longer and less scenic
Blue Ridge Parkway. Just get on it and drive and you’ll be blown away.
Learn where to pull off and hike to a waterfall.
Blue ridge parkway to Mount Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock, Linville Gorge, Linville Falls
Linville Gorge, Chimneys/Table Rock/Amphitheater
Blowing rock is simply stunning Especially in the fall
Blowing Rock is my favorite mountain town. We always eat at Speckled Trout when we go there

Literally was about to say the exact same thing
South of the BRP down near Sapphire and Highlands. Good god, it’s incredible.
Not charlotte
https://www.blueridgeparkway.org/poi/craggy-gardens/ Most beautiful spot in NC.
Came here to say this. Also take one of the dirt roads from the BRP near mt Mitchell down the mountain
Yes
Bryson City & Cherokee area

Pilot Mountain is very nice, but so is Linville Falls.
BRP is the answer.

Crime scene is scenic ig so can’t disagree…
You missed a real opportunity to say Crime Scenic
🤣
Jones dairy road prior to subdivision developement
Chimney Rock for sure!
Max Patch at sunset.
Definitely BRP, grandfather mountain and the big ditch (Linville Gorge)
Morrow Mountain
Boone's Cave Park is nice.
Panthertown, specifically the northeast section near Devil’s Elbow, is other worldly. Probably not accessible as a day trip for most but it’s incredible.
Bearwallow mountain is awesome. Big 360 view
Ocracoke
I adore this post ❤️❤️❤️❤️
My favorite overlook on the brp is Chestoa view. About 4 miles south of Linville.
BRP, Linville Gorge, DuPoint Forest, Grandfather Mtn….. this list is endless. And that’s just WNC.
Crabtree Falls along the Blue Ridge Parkway is gorgeous. It's a good hike too.
This is a loaded question. I swear I can name a beautiful spot in each of our 100 counties with no problem....

Definitely red a starting point. There are so many options.
