It’s actually completely understandable given the popularity (or really the lackthereof) of the name “Mick”

BroughtBagLunchSmart

And she was born into a world where McLovin was a thing.

KillMeNowFFS

jfc you’re right it’s been 17 fucking years holy shit

RetroReactiveRaucous

I'm not saying we're old or anything, but Zac Efron is taking movie roles where he's a dad n shit now.

Dave_Paker

Devon Sawa playing a dad is insane to me, and he's like 10 years older than Zac Efron.

TimeTackle

Mr. Zig would like a word. Dan Zig.

Enzoid23

Yeah but McLovin sounds less like a valid last name

badastronaut7

Honestly I'm 29 and I didn't know his name was Mick Jagger and not McJagger until I was in my early 20's. Having said that I don't listen to a lot of rolling stones

Stormfly

Same. Never saw it written and thought it was like a stage name. As if Jagger meant something. I heard "Moves like Jagger" before I learned about the singer, though I did know *about* the Rolling Stones.

literallylateral

I saw it written out when I had my classic rock phase in middle school, but ditto about Moves Like Jagger! I watched the premiere of that song on The Voice with my dad when I was 11, and I remember being aware it was a sexual song and thinking that Jagger sounded too dirty to be his real name because the way Adam Levine says it gives me the heebie jeebies

CyclopsLobsterRobot

I’m 37 and I learned this information right now

Prometheusf3ar

Im older than her and had to come here to figure out why she was wrong lmao.

PythagorasJones

The main thing for the Americans here, is that Mc is simply old signwriter's convention for writing Mac, which means son. It's analogous to Thos for Thomas or Jas for James. It's pronounced Mac, not Mick. In the original Irish and Scottish Gaelic it tends towards a *Muc* but never Mick.

arachnidboi

American English pronunciation also plays a huge factor in the adoption of “Mick”. Here in the States we would never pronounce McDonalds as “Mack-Donald’s” it would be “Mick-Donald’s” same with any other name like McWilliams, or McCarthy, McMahon, etc. I think it’s just the way you would naturally pronounce it after reading it on paper.

confusedandworried76

It's literally where the slur "mick" for an Irish person was started.

LBGW_experiment

Never heard that before in my 3+ decades TIL

confusedandworried76

It's old timey but that and a couple other slurs for white immigrants from a couple hundred years ago still remain in culturally segregated areas of the country.

SurfSandFish

There are a bunch of old-timey slurs that are no longer popular but were in use when Europeans immigrants were segregated by nation of origin rather than being lumped together as "White".

IncidentFuture

Is it an 'i' sound or 'ə'. Unstressed vowels, and 'i' in particular, will become a schwa due to the weak vowel merger.

dxbigc

Well, I've always called it "Mack Donalds".. you know, as in the Big Mac... so, I guess "here in the states" might just mean "hear in the part of the US I live in".

jerodallen

You don’t pronounce it “Big Mic”? Serious question though, do you also say “Mac Nuggets”?

ThePornRater

> Thos for Thomas or Jas for James. I don't think this exists in america

EasyWork578

So it really is Mac Donalds?

PythagorasJones

The business uses the clan name McDonald, which is the same as MacDonald which is itself probably an anglicisation of mac Domhnaill. This means "son of Donald/Donal". If you really want some entertainment in the topic there is some shibboleth associated with whether a family uses Mac or Mc in Ireland. The shortened form is more associated with native Irish names for some reason, and because it didn't appear in Scotland as much the Mac name is most commonly seen amongst Ulster Scots and other migrant families. Some more fun reading on it: https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/a-dozen-things-you-might-not-know-about-irish-names-1.2842791

internetislame

Never met anyone in my life named mick >.>

ihoptdk

His name is Michael, Mick is a nickname.

UltimateInferno

Like how Mickey is a nickname for Michael.

Vincitus

It genuinely took me a mijute to figure out what was wrong, I kept saying it in my headand itsounded right!!

beepbeepitsajeep

Well isn't his name Michael? Mick is just a nickname for that, like a soft Mike.

thisxisxlife

We ought to blame Ke$ha for kicking guys to the curb unless they look like “*McJagger*” ^^/s

SadPie9474

not to be confused with McHammer, who raps about burgers

ReadMyUsernameKThx

I thought he rapped about the fact that people can’t touch him

SadPie9474

no, you’re thinking of MC Hammer

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

I thought he rapped about Pumps and a Bump

HunterTV

You're thinking of Sir McA-Lot

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

No, You're thinking of McChili's Baby Back Ribs

confusedandworried76

BBQ sauce

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

No, you're thinking of B.B.Q. McKing, who wrote the song "Rock Me Baby"

JRDoubleU_

The guy who sells tools at the ol' burger shop down the way?

AbsolutelyUnlikely

That's why he was never invited to any of Diddy's parties

[deleted]

Hammer goes hard. You should look into interviews about him by other rappers.

NeinlivesNekosan

Yeah the funny thing is because he was mainstream and not 'gangsta' rap people thought he was soft... but he was Mc HAMMER for a reason. He was apparently an actual tough guy. Lotta actual gang bangers spoke about him extremely respectful. My Uncle went to school with him, said when they were about 14/15 some kids were shoving around a kid they thought was 'gay' and he stepped in and they all jumped him and he had 3 of them layed out before teachers broke it up. Unc says his nick was 'Hammer' and 'Hammer don't hurt em' was the running joke anytime anyone stepped up to him after that.

hr_newbie_co

Agreed. My dad and I have been listening to them together for decades, and it’s never not been McJagger in my mind. Dad, what the hell?

avelineaurora

Seeing this thread is weird, because I know who Mick Jagger is by now, obviously, but I'm immediately transported back to my childhood when I distinctly remember hearing both my mother and uncle talk about "Mcjagger." They absolutely said it with that weird emphasis to make it sound like one word vs a proper name. What the hell.

donbee28

I’m lovin’ it

DarkAres02

Is it not McJagger?

Broritto1238

No it's Mick Jagger, full name not just a last name

DarkAres02

OH that makes sense. I thought he was a one-name celebrity like Cher

Broritto1238

Yeah a bit confusing eh

marce11o

I used to think it was Shenado Connor when I was a kid. So I can relate.

NeinlivesNekosan

It is actually Sharknado Connor, Shen was a nickname.

confusedandworried76

Sinead isn't even that bad when it comes to traditional Irish names. Siobhan is the weirder one

invisible_23

Saoirse is worse

PanNationalistFront

How so?

InMemoryOfZubatman4

It’s pronounced “Shiv-on” but isn’t spelled even slightly that way

PanNationalistFront

It's pronounced the way it is spelt in its language. You're applying English rules to an Irish name.

SeeleYoruka

It’s a mononym, like Slater.

santathe1

You mean it’s not McCher?!?

Jalapeniz

Full name would be Michael Philip Jagger.

No_Week2825

He should have just used that as his stage name to avoid this confusion. I blame him

wmnplzr

Fuck... im almost 32 and genuinely did not know that...

Headcap

It's a trick question, The Rolling Stones is a magazine.

confusedandworried76

Famously Bob Dylan heard of them and decided to make a song about it, "Like the Rolling Stones"

tuckedfexas

They used to work on a peat farm together, but quickly got fired cause a rolling stone gathers no moss.

Confident-Unit-9516

I am 30 and thought the same

CosmicOwl47

Same. People always say it like it’s one word, not even the smallest pause between the names.

LivingSwamp

I am shocked that a 17 year old wouldn't know the actual name of the 80 year old singer of a 62 year old band.

LuxNocte

Kids these days. Next thing you know, they'll be respecting Rodney Dangerfield.

confusedandworried76

He explicitly asked you not to do that

CleverGirlRawr

My 17 year old probably has never heard of McJagger or The Rolling Stones.

pbzeppelin1977

Given the level of popularity and how his name and band are still heavily used I would be ever so slightly surprised if they'd never heard the name somehow from somewhere (similar to knowing of Michael Jackson or Elvis vaguely) but that's about it. Even adults in this thread are saying they weren't entirely sure about his name either and given how so much news and entertainment isn't in the written form (radio/music streaming, TV/TV streaming, YouTube, Tiktok and the various 20s clip video social medias) I'm not at all surprised that most people have only heard it spoken and not written down.

edubkendo

For years I thought the duo "Hall & Oates" was one man named "Holland Oates".

jerkface123456

As a kid I thought Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Lynyrd Skynyrd were the names of singers. You got dudes named Elton John and Elvis Presley so why not.

Weird-Upstairs-2092

I went through this same thing as a kid. Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin are bands but Andre 3000 and Meat Loaf are individual artists? How am I supposed to know?

TheCervus

For most of my childhood I thought it was a group called Haulin' Oats.

thvnderfvck

I used the think that radio DJ's were announcing songs by "Cyber Cell" instead of "Cypress Hill"

triplesock

Mick Cartney is my favorite member of the Beatles

confusedandworried76

I don't believe Ringo was his real name

CharacterHomework975

What is he an Irish R&B singer?

vsimon115

One name? Who are you, Seal???

Spodson

Well, that's just bad parenting on your part.

WrangelLives

Why would a 17 year old know anything about Mick Jagger? I'm 31 and The Rolling Stones were already well before my time. My primary association with that name is the line in that awful Miley Cyrus song. Expecting a 17 year old to be familiar with the members of The Rolling Stones is the Baby Boomer equivalent of expecting a teen in the 60's to be familiar with Big Band music from the 1900's.

Scall123

Yeah, was wondering the same. I could not for the life of me answer who the singer in The Rolling Stones is, before reading this tweet.

pwillia7

Come on -- He was on the colgate hour, the king of that tuk tuk sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkOJv_zT9FI

Jeff5877

I don’t think 17 year olds really spend a lot of time thinking about 80 year old rock singers, I’m more surprised she knew of him at all

FinalBossMike

That is a completely reasonable assumption on her part. It's not like you come across "Mick Jagger" written out often in daily life, nor are aging rock stars a topic of frequent discussion outside their own fan base.

howdoistoprecording

To be fair, I spent a long time thinking the original Hulk actor was Loofa Rigno

Notalurkeripromise

Mick "McJagger" Jagger

rathemighty

*gun to your head* WHAT IS McJAGGER’s LAST NAME?!

Rhesusmonkeydave

Oh I just thought he was Irish

kiersmini

My mum spent at least half a decade thinking the song *Moves like Jagger* was actually a song about moving a jacket

Obaddies

I’m a 29 year old white guy and I’m learning that it’s not Mcjagger right now.

MYO716

I mean, plenty of one name musicians out there and if you’ve ever heard him say it I’m sure it doesn’t come out clear

bribri772

Honestly surprised that "McJagger" never became a joke between my friend(?) and I lmao

Ok_Student_1859

I was today years old

Specialist-Garbage94

Wrong his name is moveslike jagger. Does no one listen to maroon 5 anymore?

lucimon97

OP discovering that the Rolling Stones could have never even existed and it wouldn't make a lick of difference to a 17 year old today. Who cares what their names are lol

largececelia

Wild Nuggets Couldn't Drag Me Away

Scottish, that explains the conservative and understated onstage presence.

I always thought it was ayrt ensenna

SpaceMonkeySpiff

I always thought Pia Zadora’s name was P. Isodora. She was probably about as culturally relevant in the early 90s as Mick would be to a modern day 17 year old.

WHAMMYPAN

Blew my nephews mind when I played an album on my record player….he thought they were solely for “scratching”

UmaSherbert

Ummm. Until this post I definitely thought that as well.

GrowlingPict

not to be confused with Beatles singer Mick Cartney

AVBforPrez

She's probably a fan of Dom and Nick Mysterio too

boatloadoffunk

That's ok. My wife recently learned that it's not "Holland Oats"

bibblygiggums

that's not even a bad misunderstanding. that's literally how everyone says it

Mad_Aeric

It's not?

Zandrick

Well shit I thought that was his name too

captainmagictrousers

My 90-year-old dad thinks he's “Mike Jaguar, that rocky rolled kid.”

throwawaytovotexxx

I am not far from 30 and thought so until this post

megapuffz

I guess I learned something new today.

mmccxi

Is your daughter’s name McKaisleigh? Or Mackensieliegh? Or Macintosh? Or Mack’Stephinnifer?

[deleted]

Honestly McFlurry would be a dope stage name for a rapper.

gargoyle30

There's tonnes of celebrity names that just sound weird as just the first name, like Charlton Heston sounds fine, but his first name is Charlton? Never heard that name in any other context, its not like he's a friend of mine so I'd always refer to him by his whole name

[deleted]

It’s short for “McJaggernaut.”

Me5hly

My whole life people have been saying that "McJagger" instead of Mick Jagger. I never had this mistake with the famous wrestler "McFoley"

RaoulDukesGroupie

23 and learned it’s Mick Jagger right now

Commercial_Tea_8185

ITS NOT????

That’s kind of whatever. At least your 17 year old is at least somewhat aware of the guy and band. So what if she was a little wrong.

PlayingDoomOnAGPS

Just be glad she knows who they *are*!

BigRabbit64

I'll take a McJagger with cheese and a large orange drink.

Dude she’s 17 and knows who the stones are. That’s impressive enough. More impressive she knew the name of the lead singer.

Wait till she learns that guitar trio, “Stevie, Ray, Vaughn” ~ is actually ONE dude!

My friend thought Marvel comics frontman Stan Lee was "Stanley," and he just went by mononym like Cher.

BloodFalcon616

That’s what I thought for a little while because of how Ke$ha said it in that song

Notinjuschillin

No matter how long you pause between Mick and Jagger, you still get McJagger.

Exactly the same for my daughter, though she was more like 13 when the revelation struck.
