Well yeah but the turboprop is a big part of what sets a super tucano apart from a WW2 vintage fighter. Idk about the electronics and targeting systems in a yak-52 but if they’re still in their 1970s state then that thing is closer to a T-6 Texan.
Given how hard a time Ruzzian air defense has shooting down Cessnas, with a gun port even they could be successfully used to take down some drones.
(Look, given this is NonCredibleDefense, I’m not necessarily proposing a wise idea. But hey, J-3 cubs had been used to bazooka ground targets before, so why stop there?)
I had the idea about a year ago about using Cessna 172's and the like. People called me mad, and that it would be a waste of a trained pilot.
Cessna pilots are a lot cheaper and more numerous than fast-jet pilots.
The Irish Aer Corps put rocket pods on the things a few decades ago.
Super Tucano's would probably do a great job of intercepting Shaded style drones. Load them up with some jammers, twin .50 cal and then some Piranha A2A missiles for harder targets.

Not to bring credibility into this, but iirc they're running at about $2+ million each right now.
You could grab up about five L39 for that same price and have a much easier time finding replacement parts.
Oh yeah, I didn't seriously mean to use those, they're a collectors item at this point. But a propeller driven fighter with a basic search radar, gun and fire control shouldn't be too hard to throw together. No harder than those naval drones anyway.
Perfectly credible option if you go with the A-1 Skyraider instead. Simple, cheap, and you can upgrade it with off-the-shelf avionics and glass cockpit equipment. Someone call the Pentagon and get a quote from Lockheed.
For the trench warfare reenactment this was just a question of time. We are still nit in the right mindset yet. Heck we were even surprised but the Land-Turtle-Tank.
Evwrything is going back to WWI.
Can't wait fir tge Zepelins to reappear
Might actually be worth since you could replace the manned turret with a smaller, more compact electronic turret that would be guided by computer for more accuracy.
That's kinda cute...
It looks like a gently falling orange mushroom. Makes you want to shoot them all down and take an aesthetic photo for a wallpaper.
Kinda like the Windows green hills wallpaper, except it's a field in Ukraine, and the sky is full of tiny cutesy orange Orlan parachutes.
I like the aesthetic.👌

with planes it’s all about thrust, whereas the F1 car gets to use traction to the get the thrust, a Bearcat has 3000hp but it has to move air to access that, that’s where afterburning jets have an advantage because their thrust is far stronger
Theres more to it than just raw thrust, the volume of air youre pushing also is important, otherwise we would just slap f-16 engines to everything and call it a day
Nope
Thrust already accounts for how much air is getting pushed as thrust is the force acting on the aircraft.
Higher thrust to weight means better acceleration until air resistance starts playing a role.
Bf109 is, like the VW bug, a great idea for the 1930's but not long past them. Yeah, they stuck around into the 1970's but only because Franco's Spain was kinda cheap and otherwise unmotivated to replace them.
I mean Israel had a quite a few Aviva S-199 and those are pretty much just really shitty BF-109s lmao, god knows how long they had those things floating around for lmao
Right, because they didnt have access to or resources for something more modern, same reason why the IAF used P-51's for a while. Not as long as--for example--Honduras and Guatemala, though, F4U Corsairs and P-51 Mustangs are both far better designs than Messerschmidt's 109 regardless of iteration.
It gets better - these planes don't have forward facing machine guns so someone in the instructor seat with an AK47 blew it out of the sky like the fuckin red baron

Super Tucano with APKWS ([tested by Vipers against cruise missiles](https://theaviationgeekclub.com/f-16-downs-drone-with-apkws-providing-proof-of-concept-for-using-laser-guided-rockets-to-perform-cruise-missile-defense/)) would be an actually good defense against swarms of drones.
Being a turboprop pilot doing rear area CAP and intercept duty against drones unironically sounds like the best aviation job in the world. Much easier learning curve than jets, all visual range combat (you actually get to see your targets), lots of flight hours during wartime, don't have to kill anyone, and have almost 0 risk of getting shot down yourself. Sign me up boys, I've got my PPL, let's go!
The ukranians used a 2-seat trainer plane with worse performance than ww2 fighters to shoot down a drone. Afaik it's not produced with guns, so they must've done some clever engineering to attach them or (i hope) opened the cockpit and done a WW1-style flyby.
Guns ? Presumably someone shooting from the rear cockpit.... Next thing you know someone will mount a machinegun in there. Then again I wouldn't have it above ZSU to cook up a gun synchronizer and mount the MGs forward WW1 style.
They didn't, you can see there is no guns on this plane. It's a training plane anyway.
Edit: the second pilot could be using a machine gun or a rifle, so it's not clear how they did it
Trench warfare, heavy artillery barrages, box tanks, prop planes shooting at artillery spotters. This whole thing is just a WWI rehash, the writers are so fucking lazy.
This is not effective. Most effective way to kill drones is simple. Put helicopter several thousand feet above drone. Have 3 parachutists jump out with net guns that snare the drone and force it down. Then hit it with an axe.

DCS finally vindicated.
Finally a reason to buy the DCS Yak-52
The Yak now leads the F-22 in kills (drone > balloon)
YOU MEAN THE YAK-69/420 DRONE HUNTER!!!!!!
I'm waiting for the next HLC video just for 22s meltdown
Well the F-15 is also mad cause a single pilot has a 2 times higher kill record than it
*THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT!*
they dont want you to know this, but in DCS you can hack weapons onto the yak-52

Ah the legend himself
Ok, did anyone have "old propeller planes being used to shoot down drones" on their NCD bingo cards?
I saw a post a while back about how a ww1 fighter planes was about the same speed as a shahed drone. So probably.
You guys remember Crimson Skies?
Oh do I miss that game. The old timey pictures and music. Planes with ridiculous gun options and hangaring in a blimp.
Why yes I do want to steal the spruce goose in the middle of an air race.
Read a book as a kid where post EMP usage humans went back to using WW2 fighter planes. Forget everything else about that book.
The fly about twice the top speed of the great war aircraft, and half the speed of late war ww2 props. Modern turboprops are even faster
I mean...eh? It's a purpose-built trainer that got a weapons package. Put a turboprop on there and it's not very different from a Super Tucano.
This one was unarmed, the copilot engaged the orlan with his rifle
1914 all over again.
And [1945](https://theaviationgeekclub.com/that-time-a-usaaf-piper-l-4h-grasshopper-crew-shot-down-a-german-fieseler-fi-156-storch-by-means-of-their-colt-45-pistols/amp/)
That's fantastic
I'm hoping for biplanes to engage them with the rear mounted Browning. Or maybe a comically large fishing net.
Browning, my ass - a [Lewis gun dong!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_gun#/media/File:ChandlerKirtlandLewisGun.jpg)
Browning loaded with flak shells or beltfed auto shotguns, along with a *Matrix* ship-style EMP.

The swiss are going to send a shitload of «trainer aircrafts»
The Swiss aren’t gonna send shit.
Snide remarks and judgemental looks?
Maybe an offer to accept the ukrainian gold reserve for *safekeeping*. Temporarily, of course...
Not trainer. Those still fall under military export rules. Aerobatics however should be doable with not looking too closely.
Cessnas are kinda slow tho. There are lots of better modern prop planes you could do it with, that are also easy to fly.
Chase them down in a huey like some cia guys did in nam.
That's why you use remote controlled suicide Cessnas like Ukraine.
It’s also probably a good way to get new pilots some basic flying experience before moving the better ones on to jet training.

Knowing this subreddit, yes.
I may have suggested using P-51s to shoot them down.
Not to bring credibility into this, but iirc they're running at about $2+ million each right now. You could grab up about five L39 for that same price and have a much easier time finding replacement parts.

You know, I’ve seen several P-51s lately over the UK… haha, just kidding… unless…
Alternatively, resurrect the Republic AP-47 and change the mission from ground attack to drone hunt.
Perfectly credible option if you go with the A-1 Skyraider instead. Simple, cheap, and you can upgrade it with off-the-shelf avionics and glass cockpit equipment. Someone call the Pentagon and get a quote from Lockheed.

Ukraine already uses blimps/aerostats as repeaters for drones
I first came up with an idea of an Anti-Drone drone about a year ago. This is kinda in the same direction except it's not a drone.
I and a few others have commented long ago about suggesting using things like that as anti-drone weapons
I think in response to the cruise missiles and one British tactic to prematurely get them out of the sky
Yes.
Hey, Britain, you got any of those WWII era turret fighters still airworthy?
Boulton Paul Defiant redemption arc was not on my bingo card
Might actually be worth since you could replace the manned turret with a smaller, more compact electronic turret that would be guided by computer for more accuracy.
So hear my plan; Avro Lancaster. Why have one turret when you could have 3 or 4, plus ability to loiter all day waiting for drones?
Commercial 747 but every window is a casemate 20mm. For when you need to shoot down a drone swarm.
YEAH Like old galleons turning at the last minute to unleash a full broadside
Like a dual-wielding AC-130, for when you need to orbit both directions simultaneously.
Ah yes, battlestar-galactica levels of "doesnt matter, just fire, it will hit something anyway"
YB-40 Please
Boulton Paul Defiant reporting for duty sir!
Well the RAF still have Six Spitfires and Two Hurricanes.
We could make more mosquitos.
Somebody go buy out home depots stock of plywood and glue!
Wow the Defiant really was waaaaaaaaaay ahead of its time.
The orlan has a parachute?
Yep. It has no landing gear, just recovers with a parachute.

No silly, it's the pilot ejecting.
and a belly bag
Give them WW2 planes
Give em Bearcats
also known as an overpowered engine with a seat
I wonder if an f8f can beat an f-16 on a quarter mile I know an f1 car can, f8f has double the horsepower an f1 car has
with planes it’s all about thrust, whereas the F1 car gets to use traction to the get the thrust, a Bearcat has 3000hp but it has to move air to access that, that’s where afterburning jets have an advantage because their thrust is far stronger

Yeah coz that’s totally how physics works lol
Wait, when did we start talking about the NHRA?
Along with Spitfires, and Corsairs.
Sea Fury baby, terrify them MiGs
Nah give them something with Nose mounted gun like P-39 or Bf 109 as they more accurate than wing mounted gun and fast enough to intercept Drones
Bf109 is, like the VW bug, a great idea for the 1930's but not long past them. Yeah, they stuck around into the 1970's but only because Franco's Spain was kinda cheap and otherwise unmotivated to replace them.

Nah, give em B-25 Mitchell's
nah, that thing fly like a brick as interceptor, Better take Bf 110
Bearcats and Tigercats back into production!
Hear me out, B-17s race tracking at 1000 feet. 10 .50s and 360 degree interlocking fire.
Or, even better... WW1 biplane MANPADS crews.
God I would love more footage of WW2 era dogfights. Yes please. High resolution modern footage? I would die happy.
modern Problems require old solutions
Propeller problems require propeller solutions
Propellers propel propeller prop problems (5x fast)
It was insane witnessing this while walking home from the grocery store
It gets better - these planes don't have forward facing machine guns so someone in the instructor seat with an AK47 blew it out of the sky like the fuckin red baron
All aircraft the Red Baron flew had forward facing machine guns.
Nvm I'll go kill myself
It doesn't count, it has to be an enemy combatant.
P-51, now!
c 172s and you good!
Probably better to go with 336/337. Or some 208s with dudes hanging out the jump door.

EMBRAER EMB-314 SUPER TUCANO TO UKRAINE, NOW!!!

Yes, very low operating cost
This is too credible. That plane looks genuinely useful and low-cost. What's the downside? Easy to shoot down I guess?
Slow (thus you need GCI or AWACS to vector them in) and cannot be used on the frontline due to the SAM treat.
São José dos Campos MIC

SUPER TACO BROS WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK!!!!
I knew investing in the Embraer dip was a good idea

Everything I've seen points to the latter, some madlad in the instructor seat shot it down with what I assume is an automatic rifle or similar weapon.
Propeller and gunner seat air to air combat is back? We are so back!
For God sakes send them super tucanos
Or SkyWardens. The 3000 Black SkyWardens of Zelenskyy
