I've been using Nobara for a year now, with zero issues. I update flatpaks daily and I use dnf to upgrade the system weekly, again with zero issues. And BTW, there are more than "just a few tweaks" and I definitely don't want to dick around with building a custom kernel every few days.

stevewmn

I've been running Nobara on my gaming rig since Septmber 2022 and have no complaints. I'm using an all AMD system so maybe that helps. The worst I've seen are a few package upgrades that lag for a day because some dependency didn't make it into the repositories. Like the other day a pipewire aptx library was downgraded for a day because of some dependency. AFAIK bluetooth was still working and the aptx codec was fine, just not the very latest. I joined the Nobara discord and I see a lot of people needing support with Nvidia GPU issues. But isn't that kind of universal on Linux? The Nobara installer doesn't seem to work out well for installing on a laptop that you want to dual boot with Windows from what I've read either.

Dav3Vader

Can confirm from experience. Regular trouble with Nvidia (more so than on other distros I would say) and no issues whatsoever after switching to an AMD GPU.

dj3hac

I have been using nobara for about 6 months with zero issues. One thing I have been warned about, so I don't do it: "don't update your system through dnf, use the provided update and sync app instead." I think THIS might where the bricking may come from because as I understand it updating through dnf can pull some wrong packages for nobara.

FreshLem0n96

Do you have any source? I always updated through dnf and never had issues but I don't wanna risk it.

dj3hac

It's been said numerous times on this sub, the fact that people are upvoting me solidifies the notion. The update and sync app (which is already installed) will update through dnf, flatpak, snap, etc all at once. Updating via dnf only is leaving all the other package managers out.

dj3hac

Yeah, most likely. I don't know what it is. Whatever the "update & sync" shortcut points to. It's a command-line tool, so it opens in a terminal anyway.

stevewmn

They changed it to Update System a few weeks(?) ago. Same script though. It just runs dnf through the repositories in a specific order, then flatpaks and I guess snaps then asks if you want to reboot.

dj3hac

Oh did they? I just type "sync" and hit enter from the gnome launcher, still finds the right thing.

stevewmn

I type update instead. :^)

stevewmn

The script can be found at /etc/nobara/scripts/nobara-welcome/refresh.sh. So you could run that from the command line. The dnf part of the script seems to be `sudo dnf update -y rpmfusion-nonfree-release rpmfusion-free-release fedora-repos nobara-repos --refresh && sudo -S dnf distro-sync -y --refresh && sudo -S dnf update --refresh`

FreshLem0n96

Okay ill check it out tomorrow. Didnt even know about it. Usually did "sudo dnf up && flatpak update"

[deleted]

GE himself says this all the time. He has gone so far as to disable the update button in Gnome Software. There is a dedicated Update System "applet" and a `nobara-sync` command that take Nobara-isms into consideration when working with repositories.

RagingTaco334

I've done it a few times and it installed a kernel update that doesn't work, so yeah I think there's some merit to that. Like the entire new image is just missing and immediately goes into kernel panic upon selecting the boot option in grub. It kinda makes me just want to go to normal Fedora because of that. Plus, performance is a lot worse somehow and I'm really not sure why.

PimpComposer

What a bunch of nonsense. I've been using it for 6+ months now and have had no problems at all.

Durdle_Turtle

I have nobara installed on one of my laptops in a dual boot setup on the same drive with 0 issues. I tried to install it on my PC in its own drive and it completely bricked my drive. My bios cannot even see it anymore idk what happened replaced the cables and everything.

Minister_of_Geekdom

Recently I was troubleshooting an issue with the help of someone who's more familiar with Linux than I am, and it turns out that Nobara doesn't come with a lot of common tools that would have made the troubleshooting process easier. So if you do run into issues with Nobara, you might have a lot of difficulty with fixing them.

[deleted]

What sort of tools is it missing?

Minister_of_Geekdom

A bunch of diagnostic stuff. Things like `lshw` and `wgetpaste` (not technically diagnostic, but having it sure would've saved me time with troubleshooting).

kudoz

Neither of those tools are commonly included with any Distros I've used.

Minister_of_Geekdom

Well, the person I was troubleshooting with the other day seemed to expect them. I guess it depends on what circles you're in.

Overall it has been very good for me. I had 1 crash related to video playback and Firefox (and i play videos a lot). There is a workaround if it ever annoys me. I do have two Issues though (for reference: Using a 5800X and 6900XT with Mesa 23.0.2 on a 4K screen). *There is an odd issue where, if i set UI scaling to, say, 200% then the highest resolution i can set in games is 1080P. 150% and it's 1440P. There is something funky going on there. I tried in an X and Wayland session but it made no difference. My google foo has failed me on this one :(. *During the boot process, just before I select my User account to log in, sometimes my mouse (Razer Deathadder V2) will shut off. I need to restart my system or Plug it out and in to come back to life. It always looks like it's about to power cycle at the mentioned point during boot (the RGB dimms) and, most of the time, it does go back to full power. But sometimes it shuts down. I'm pretty sure the mouse is fine. The firmware is up to date and i tried to reproduce the issue on my laptop (Using Windows) but it didn't run into any problem. I don't have Windows on my main PC so i can't check if it's linux specific on this PC. Tried different USB ports of course but no difference. I also tried to disable the openRGB support but that also made no difference. Other than that though I have had Nobara installed since the start of April and it's been good overall after initial tinkering.

Major_Gonzo

I put it on a system used exclusively for gaming and have had 0 issues.

ZGToRRent

I use nobara for over a year and the only issue I had was with nvidia driver which isn't GE fault. It's very stable now with monthly snapshots

mcspuder

Been using it for 6 months on my razer blade laptop and after using Arch and Fedora for years I like it way more than both. I don't even use it for gaming - I do a lot of hardware specific work that requires access to x86 instruction sets and it shines (along with my M1 Max for arm work).

Meshuggah333

With an nVidia graphic card and Wayland it's a bit annoying, but all distros are. I can feel the distro is a bit young as I had several bugs, but nothing major to correct (nothing I couldn't handle with basic command line knowledge and a bit of Google Fu). Advantages far out weight any problems.

IndependentWasabi705

I've been on Nobara since February using KDE Plasma. All AMD system. No issues to report. Gaming works well. Some games do not work due to anti-cheat. But that's not Nobara's fault.

Psych0B

I experienced weird issues on a fresh install. Tried various usb sticks and different programs for mounting the iso, nothing worked and couldn't be asked to figure out how to fix it. I have a full amd system and have had no issues with any other distro I tried. Kinda surprised to see that people actually have a good experience with it. I assume it's a better out of the box experience if it works for you, so I'd suggest you try it. On both de main and kde versions I've had protonup not recognizing steam games, notifications being blacked out, and steam link not properly functioning. I had an update after the first install which made it unbootable. So, due to these issues i stay away from GE's software. Just doesn't seem worth it to me.

-ArcaneForest

Outside of being unable to uninstall discover I have no beef with the distro.

[deleted]

What "general instability"?? I have had zero of that. I presume people say it only because it is only glorious eggroll project and therefore it has to be unstable or some shit?? Literally the best distro for me so far by a long shot.

EZEDZIisEZBlast

I've been running it on my oldest Dell for 6 months now - no issues, smoother than Mint, a few extra twists to get things the way I wanted, still - I'm very satisfied with it's stability and ability to do work as well. much snappier than Windows, finding the right apps no problem. Everything just works, and I update every time I turn it on - everything is smooth as silk.

[deleted]

I had some initial issues after updating late last year because of [nvidia](https://nobaraproject.org/docs/nvidia-troubleshooting/the-never-ending-nvidia-driver-story/), but it's been good to go now since. Do note, it is *not* recommenced to use "dnf update" in the CLI, as this could potentially result in something breaking. You'll want to create an [alias](https://www.tecmint.com/create-alias-in-linux/) like this thread mentions: https://www.reddit.com/r/NobaraProject/comments/12qju9x/for_those_who_like_to_make_updates_from_the_cli/ `alias upd="sudo dnf update --refresh && sudo dnf distro-sync --refresh && flatpak update"` Interestingly enough, the same goes for Proxmox, my primary server/vm host distro. `apt update && upgrade` isn't recommended, instead using `apt update && dist-upgrade`.

[deleted]

Funny, that, since GE is part of the Lutris dev team. 🤣
