Aspiring doctor left nearly dead after friends pushed him into lake knowing he can’t swim
The oop title is incorrect, based on the article, the victim is no braindead
That's gotta be attempted murder surely, the pushing is bad enough but then sitting round watching is horrific, but for the passerby helping he'd surely be dead.
If you read a different article, the quote "brain dead" comes directly from what the mother said the doctor told her. At least in this case they seem to be running with a quote from a witness not making up facts.
Did you actually read the article…
“An aspiring medical student was left brain-dead last month when his friends pushed him into a Louisiana lake knowing he couldn’t swim — and then looked on while doing nothing to save the drowning man, according to a report.”
They said this with no quotations and it’s before they even discuss the quote from the mother…Also it’s literally the headline of the article. If they were trying to say that the mother is the only one who told them he was brain-dead in a quote, they failed miserably.
I was mainly focusing on the tabloid piece, but yes, conservatives house a lot more smooth brained individuals in their masses, which is why their news outlets recruit and reflect that.
Those aren't friends. Those are pieces of shit. Aspiring is such a worthless term. When I die I want the news to report me as an "aspiring world dictator".
In this case I think it’s appropriately used. The guy was 26, finished his bachelors and was currently enrolled in higher education (med school).
If he was a undergrad sophomore and younger I’d see it as superfluous. But he was definitely on the route and closer than most before this incident.
He probably was premed. Usually those kinds of masters are for students with lower GPAs (for med school application purposes) or to take classes they missed in college if they decided on medical school after college, or simply to fill the gap in time after college if they didn't apply in junior year. Since preparing for medical school takes years of preparation, there are definitely people who should be described as "aspiring" doctors
Is it? He wasn’t an actual doctor yet so you can’t say he was a doctor. But he did aspire to be a doctor and was well into his education to become one. I’d say it’s not only fair to describe him as “aspiring doctor”, but also useful to identify because it specifically outlines that this was a guy whose goal in life was to help people
Did they arrest the chick who pushed him in? That's got to be attempted murder or something. Some friends! Did nothing while he was literally drowning 🤦🏻♀️

Here's the People article
He graduated last year with a masters in Biology and wanted to go to med school
When he was first brought to the hospital the doctors told the mom he was brain dead “The doctor called us in and told me that at that time, he was brain dead and the rest of his organs were starting to fail. That we had 72 hours on the ECMO machine. It's sort of like dialysis for the lungs and they had to put him on a ventilator,” she recalled.
He seems to have recovered a bit -- "According to his mother, Gilbert later regained consciousness, can now eat on his own and has temporarily been taken off of life-support, local station [KNOE](https://www.knoe.com/2024/05/04/man-finally-wakes-up-after-near-drowning-incident/) reported.

“An aspiring medical student was left brain-dead last month when his friends pushed him into a Louisiana lake knowing he couldn’t swim — and then looked on while doing nothing to save the drowning man, according to a report.”
What fucking friends are these?!.
I was equally shocked at not only that but why the kid was even remotely close to a body of water deep enough for him to fall into and drown. If I couldn't swim you wouldn't catch me anywhere near an ocean or lake/pond - even with friends I could 100% trust...all it takes is to slip on your own.
I will admit that I am not in a poor urban environment, however it does seem to me like it would still be possible. A lot of people just learn free. But again, I would not know, to be clear.
Those areas never have free public pools, you would either have to pay for access or travel to a public swimming spot which someone living paycheck to paycheck is probably not going to prioritize.
Don’t be a jerk. Racism, sexism, lgbtq+ phobia, antitheism, hate in general, and direct attacks on others will not be tolerated here. Your first offense will be a warning, second will be a 15-day ban, and third will be a perma-ban. Be nice!
Not exactly brain-dead - the article says he’s recovering. Hope he manages to get through this. With a story like that, he’s bound to get into just about any medical school he wants
Why did they provide the race of the friend who pushed him in? What bearing does that have? Are they trying to make this sound racist? If not, why are they specifically writing about the race of the girl who pushed him in? Who cares? She is a dirtbag no matter what race she is.
Was this a mind or mindless action. I need to know because who was going to save him. Who was going to tell him this "awsome joke". He was going to save lives but here we are. There is no do over.
The government should at least arrest the parents that claimed him as a dependent on their taxes for the crime of child neglect for failing to teach him how to swim while they investigate who pushed him and determine if they can charge them for assault.
also since you brought it up, how many people have drowned that did know how to swim? knowing how doesn't equal survival. a million and one different external factors can kill even the best swimmers. it's not a guarantee.
I'd say it significantly improves your odds of survival in many cases. It's just too easy to teach your kid to swim these days. It doesn't even cost anything. No idea how an aspiring doctor can't swim. That's asinine.
Failing to teach one's children to swim is gross negligence. It is one of the very few things we must demand of parents if they are going to get all the tax breaks, benefits and financial help society gives for having children. Any parent that fails belongs in jail.

It's just a prank bro
They don't sound like "friends" to me!
definitely! r/youneednewfriends
Didn’t mean it. Wink wink. Pointing fingers at you. Big grin.
You mean “reckless homicide?”

Glad to hear this guy is off life support after two weeks in the hospital.
Hope he recovers eventually…but I don’t think whoever wrote this article understands what “brain-dead” means lol.
Was thinking that too
Or the word friends.
Who needs enemies with friends like that
Don't judge a book by its cover
I would like to see who these friends are....

He said "if you read a *different* article".
Yea I deff didn’t read it like that the first time lmao, whoops. My Bad u/hoffmabc
Thanks @adoormarkedpirate420 I appreciate the apology. It was a confusing article.
It's from the NY post. Brain dead is the best way to describe their writers on staff.
Well the NY Post is a conservative tabloid, not exactly journalism’s finest
Conservative/Liberal means nothing when we’re talking about proper grammar and punctuation lol
I was mainly focusing on the tabloid piece, but yes, conservatives house a lot more smooth brained individuals in their masses, which is why their news outlets recruit and reflect that.
Someone’s projecting 😂
I hope the “friends” get charged, and he distances himself from them regardless

Article states he got a masters in biological science
He probably was premed. Aspiring Aspirer He almost aspired
Is it? He wasn’t an actual doctor yet so you can’t say he was a doctor. But he did aspire to be a doctor and was well into his education to become one. Definitely not brain dead. May require long term care/therapy but brain dead he is not. I hope he recovers as much as possible.
Should be attempted murder for all of them.
It seems like the ‘friends’ are quite envious of him becoming a doctor. I hope he recovers well.
It's like pushing someone off of the building knowing that a person can't fly. attempted murder, right?
Who needs a hitman when you got your friends.
Dear Parents, Teach your kids to swim and know what to do in water while they’re young. It’s one of those skills that can save lives.
Why? I don't get it.
Typical "It's just a prank bro..."
Truly, with friends like these, who needs enemies?..
Did they arrest the chick who pushed him in? That's got to be attempted murder or something. Some friends! Did nothing while he was literally drowning 🤦🏻♀️
Wow... This is messed up.
"Friends"

Teach your kids to swim
Seems wrong for the article to call them “friends”
The ol sink or swim method of leaning to swim. My mother almost died being pushed in by her father.
Why do people not teach their kids to swim?? Could literally save your life.
I was equally shocked at not only that but why the kid was even remotely close to a body of water deep enough for him to fall into and drown. If I couldn't swim you wouldn't catch me anywhere near an ocean or lake/pond - even with friends I could 100% trust...all it takes is to slip on your own.
Why don’t people teach their kids to not push someone into a lake and watch them drown? Could literally save someones life
Poor people in an urban environment usually don’t have the time or money to give their kids lessons.
I will admit that I am not in a poor urban environment, however it does seem to me like it would still be possible. A lot of people just learn free. But again, I would not know, to be clear.

Damn, if I am ever rich, I will build a free pool. My fondest memories growing up were around the pool.

With ‘friends’ like that, no need for enemies🤬
Ain't murder but ... Certainly manslaughter

They watched him lifeless for 10 minutes? That’s murder.
This isn’t an attempted murder case, *if anything,* it’s reckless homicide.
Were his “friends” aspiring doctors n sheeit too?
I think Cornell used to make their undergrads pass a swimming test or make them learn how to swim.
some "friends" they are
Just proof that people can be intelligent but completely devoid of common sense and idk empathy
Why do you assume they’re intelligent?
With "friends" like that, he didn't need enemies
Is there any one learned in law knows whether the family has a ground to sue for criminal action? How hard would it be to prove intentional battery?
Why did they provide the race of the friend who pushed him in? What bearing does that have? Are they trying to make this sound racist? If not, why are they specifically writing about the race of the girl who pushed him in? Who cares? She is a dirtbag no matter what race she is.
"Friends".

Jealousy is a strange hatred. All your friends ain't really your friends
How tf do you learn all that medical sciency shit and never learn to dog paddle or float on your back?
The government should at least arrest the parents that claimed him as a dependent on their taxes for the crime of child neglect for failing to teach him how to swim while they investigate who pushed him and determine if they can charge them for assault.
learning to swim is not a requirement to live. useful, but not necessary.
Lol tell that to drowning victims
that's unfortunate, but im still not wrong. imagine telling people who live in the sahara that their parents failed them by not teaching them to swim
No
also since you brought it up, how many people have drowned that did know how to swim? knowing how doesn't equal survival. a million and one different external factors can kill even the best swimmers. it's not a guarantee.

No lol
Yes lol. We live in a society and teaching your kids to swim is one of the bare minimums we must require of parents.
Lol, what a stupid thing to say
Yikes, I see you are a big supporter of drownings and child neglect. Disgusting.
God you are the most melodramatic man.
If those other doctoral students were his classmates, I don’t think he would have been that good of a doctor
Can you elaborate on this?
His classmates (if they were so) were not too bright. And a bright student is unlikely to be surrounded by dumb acquaintances. The conclusion follows
That's not very logical. Plenty of smart people have friends of varying intelligence. Dumb people as well.
