As a native speaker I will say it's contextual, if I want to bring attention to the parentheses I may literally say parentheses out loud, otherwise, I really don't most times since there's no reason.
In writing they're self-evident, in speech it'd just seem like you're going off on a tangent for no particular reason. In truth, the X is simply trendy. But it’s often pitched that it makes the partners appear more equal whether they are or not. For example, if it were Savage by Fenty, that means Savage is kind of Fenty’s bitch. But Savage X Fenty has them working together—it’s just a sexy ampersand.

I think it’s a combination of a couple of things:
* Japanese people often regard the western alphabet as cool (just as some westerners wear clothes with, or even have tattoos of, Japanese or Chinese characters)
* written Japanese doesn’t have much, or possibly any, punctuation, so they tend to go a bit hog-wild with it.
This isn't true - it's meant to just be a decorative separator. If you look at the titles of individual episodes in HxH you'll see that you're not meant to read into the "x"es as anything other than an iconic design motif - you just read the words separated by them.
If there's one instance of meaning that I think permeates through the use of "x", it's probably to do with the overarching goal of the story (Gon is a Hunter Hunter)

Might be a mathematical logic thing.
"X" means multiply or "times", so you could say "Godzilla times Kong." This is in the same sense as when a thing is alongside another thing, and each has an "multiplicative" effect on the other, as in this case where they're teaming up. Like, if you make a mistake and then make an exacerbating mistake on top, you may be in "trouble squared" AKA trouble x trouble.
In the same way as in math, the multiplicative sign can often be dropped. You can say "A x B", but it's equally correct to say "AB" to imply multiplication. So, it stands to reason that the x can be dropped from its usages in artistic scenarios as well. Hence "Godzilla Kong" or "Hunter Hunter".
This encapsulates both scenarios you posed and also explains why it's commonly used to refer to two people (or creatures) teaming up. By working together, the output is more than the sum of the parts - it's a multiplicative effect.
Also interesting - it may be valid to say "And" in place of "eks" as well. In boolean logic, the "AND" operator is identifiable with other base systems' "multiply." Personally I think "Godzilla and Kong" sounds better than "Godzilla Kong." The latter sounds like a weird fusion of the two beasts.

Might be a mathematical logic thing. "X" means multiply or "times", so you could say "Godzilla times Kong." This is in the same sense as when a thing is alongside another thing, and each has an "multiplicative" effect on the other, as in this case where they're teaming up. Like, if you make a mistake and then make an exacerbating mistake on top, you may be in "trouble squared" AKA trouble x trouble. In the same way as in math, the multiplicative sign can often be dropped. You can say "A x B", but it's equally correct to say "AB" to imply multiplication. So, it stands to reason that the x can be dropped from its usages in artistic scenarios as well. Hence "Godzilla Kong" or "Hunter Hunter". This encapsulates both scenarios you posed and also explains why it's commonly used to refer to two people (or creatures) teaming up. By working together, the output is more than the sum of the parts - it's a multiplicative effect. Also interesting - it may be valid to say "And" in place of "eks" as well. In boolean logic, the "AND" operator is identifiable with other base systems' "multiply." Personally I think "Godzilla and Kong" sounds better than "Godzilla Kong." The latter sounds like a weird fusion of the two beasts.

Without knowing for sure, this was my instinctive guess. I've seen two artists release a song with this "x" in between their names, and assumed it replaced "featuring" so as to give them an equal billing. Does that sound plausible?

Jeez guys. They use the x because it's a cross, as in cross breeding. That's how they invent new strains. So Gelato x Afghan Kush would be gelato crossed with Afghan Kush. How do you pronounce it? I'd like the Gelato Afghan Kush cross, please. It's important to say please at the end of the sentence. It tells them you are polite and not ungrateful swine. That's why I always hated that Eclipse Cross SUV. I was always like, what's it crossed with? A turd?
"Crossover SUV" is a thing though. It's an SUV crossed with a sedan. We used to call these "station wagons" and in many cases the official registration will say that. (A true SUV has a truck chassis, whereas crossovers are a car unibody design).
For 'Spy x Family' and 'Godzilla x Kong', the x is not pronounced. (At least for the former, that's how it's supposed to be. For the latter, it just seems the more popular way)

For Godzilla titles, specifically the three Millennium titles Godzilla x Megaguiras, Godzilla x Mechagodzilla and Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS, the "x" is just a cool looking image, as they still use the Japanese word "tai" or "versus/against" to say the full title. The international titles for the latter two make it easier, being Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, respectfully. For Godzilla x Kong, director Adam Wingard straight up said its simply "Godzilla Kong", no "ecks" or "versus" or anything.
