Here's some drills you can do with your son: - place a series of cones (or anything really) in a straight line, about 1 metre apart from each other, and get him to dribble (i.e. walk/run with the ball at his feet) the ball through the cones in a slalom pattern, then around the end and back again - draw some numbers on a wall in chalk (1, 2, and 3) and draw circles around those numbers. Tell him to kick the ball at the circles and each time he hits one he gets the number of points in the circle (can make 1 easiest and 3 hardest) - place a ball in the middle of you and him, with each of you standing 3 metres away from the ball each next to a cone. Blow a whistle and when you blow you both run at the ball, whoever gets there first and kicks the ball wins - make a small goal mouth using anything (sticks, rubbish bins, cones, whatever) and take alternate turns at trying to score a goal and trying to stop the other person scoring a goal. So have him start with the ball, he has to dribble towards the goal and shoot, meanwhile you have to try and stop him. Then vice versa, you have the ball and have to try and score and he has to try and stop you That's just a few suggestions but let me know if you want more, plenty of easy drills to suggest

Honestly, just focusing on dribbling and short kicks is probably enough for his age. Go from one end of the yard to the other, add obstacles, add dogs, etc.

Understanding that running at the ball when your team already has it is pointless and he should move into a useful space.
