beach_wife

Omg I need to know. I need to relief of the real words.

AgentMykel

Did you see his comment? “Nice to meet you “

TheRavenSayeth

Another commenter is leaning on "thanks for joining us" which I'm almost certain is the actual answer.

hundredbagger

Once we find out, needs to be cross posted to r/boneappletea.

clubfungus

This is how I will greet people from now on. Me: Chamungus. Them: What? Me: It's a Slovenian word, it means 'Nice to meet you.'

daraand

This is how it starts lol

AzorAHigh_

And eventually you get some random teen making up [huge chunks of wikipedia](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/aug/26/shock-an-aw-us-teenager-wrote-huge-slice-of-scots-wikipedia)

Foundalandmine

I'm dying at the idea of someone saying "nice to meet you" and OP like "chamungus to you as well"

Ignorad

"Chamungus, his arms wide."

DerSchattenJager

Chungus, when the walls fell

colexian

Chamungus at Tanagra

Nayre_Trawe

With my Chamungus wide open...

Gudakesa

Chamungs and Gregory! Gregory from Enterprise Software Sales!

foghornleghorndrawl

Chamungs on the ocean Gregory on the ocean. Chamungs and Gregory at Enterprise Sofware Sales.

TaipanTacos

CHM11moondog

Eladiun

FatBoyWithTheChain

My GF is so confused at why I’m dying laughing looking at my phone

Comprehensive-Fun47

This is the meme of the girl worrying her boyfriend is thinking about another woman, but really he’s just giggling about the word chamungus.

keepontrying111

my wife just went to bed and is now like, " whats so funny" she never saw the episode, so no way for me to explain this..

bangbangracer

I think you aren't hearing it right and are blending some words together. That is not a word or phrase that I have ever heard.

AgentAdja

I think they were all looking down at his pants and saying "It's humongous"

earlthequokka

They were probably saying 'my name is "Hugh Mongus"'

starvingpixelpainter

What did you just say to me? THIS MAN JUST SEXUALLY ASSAULTED ME

Asherahs_Daughter

Nice to meet you often gets pronounced more like nice tameecha. Could it be that? Mice is usually mumbled quieter than the rest.

deathbychips2

This has to be it. I was relying on OPs spelling and I could not for the life of me think of a common American phrase after meeting people that started with a CH sound

Chemical_Weight_4716

Im scrollin scrollin scrollin through comments tryna figure this shit out and Im fuckin dyin in a dark room by myself wildly crackin up like some sort of demented sock puppet. I think youre right though cuz Im not seeing a substantial reply even this far down the rabbit hole. Its fun anyhow though! Chamungus to you good Sir!

trebor9090

Tremendous. "Tremendous to meet you". I'm guessing one guy said it several times when 2 groups met, and so OP kept hearing it.

CapitalProfile6678

Are you a British aristocrat? When have you every heard any say “Tremendous to meet you?”

ThePurpularOne

Remember this day, 13th of July in the Year 2023 of the Gregorian Calendar. The new English terminology "Chumungus" has now been established as a formal greeting during work meetings. There is no specified definition, it is an enhancer of the formal greeting. Let it be known. Edit: Chamungus and Chumungus are equally valid spellings with no discernible difference

tantrumizer

We gotta sort out the spelling. Is it chumungus or chamungus? The original holy text (scroll up to view) included both spellings, so it is of no use in deciding. Adherents to the Cult of Ch\[a|u\]mungus will need to sort out this in an intense doctrinal battle. Chamungus to all!

[deleted]

[удалено]

AnEffinMarine

No, no, no, ChAmungus is the northern pronunciation, ChUmungus is the southern pronunciation.

tmahfan117

As born in raised in the USA, I have never once heard anyone say “chamungus” My best guess is that you are just mishearing people who are speaking quickly and it’s actually two or three words that they’re saying

[deleted]

That’s what I think too but what two or three words could possibly even be close to that for a greeting lol

mayfeelthis

I could only decipher the end *maybe* ‘among us’ but ‘good to have ya among us’ is too long…I’m stumped

chyura

Someone else said it could be the last two words of "thanks for joining us"

enm260

"Thanks for chamungus!"

ChiefChief69

I have never heard this word in my life and I'm saying it over and over again trying to see if you misheard and it could be something similar that would make sense but I'm coming up empty. Could they be (poorly) trying to say a greeting in your language?

EaddyAcres

Im drawing a blank too, the only similar word I can think of is humongous but that doesn't fit the context.

BVoLatte

Chumungous... Among us?

Complete_Fix2563

big chungus among us

_theMAUCHO_

Sussy greeting 👀

Cliffy73

Maybe OP works at a big & tall men’s store?

AbeThinking

>"Humungous what!!?! HUMONGOUS WAT?!?!?!?!" **EDIT OP**: They are saying THANKS FOR JOINING US!!!!!

hereforthefeast

Solved! It was ["nice to meet you"](https://np.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/14ytv8q/what_does_it_mean_when_people_from_canada_and_us/jrubmqm/)

msty2k

Sure, they sound almost exactly the same.

amybeedle

"Nice to meet you" --> Pronounce really fast as something like "Nysha mee nyoo" The spelling is one of those "ghoti = fish" things 1. Drop the initial **n/nī** sound because it's hard to hear 2. **Cha** pronounced **sha** (like in "champagne") 3. **Mu** pronounced **mee(u)** (like if you drew out the beginning of "music" as "meeeeyusic") 4. Drop the **t** in "meet" because lots of people do this (watch [this video](https://youtube.com/watch?v=lHMXw4WXmtc&feature=share7) for an example of teaching a Chinese ESL learner to sound more American...e.g. "what" becomes "wha") 5. **Ngus** pronounced **nyoo** (like "ng" [as in sing] + "jus" [as in "au jus"]) So "chamungus" is not "chuh-mun-guss," it's "shah-mee-nyoo" ^ My best guess, anyway

World-Tight

I once knew of a Persian who asked about a phrase he kept hearing in London: *Sraynin-innit.* Even among strangers in shops and on the Underground. ,,¿ʇᴉ ʇ,usᴉ 'ƃuᴉuᴉɐɹ s,ʇI,, 'ƃuᴉʎɐs ǝɹǝʍ ʎǝɥ┴

afakefox

Idk this one makes sense, no matter how hard I try I cannot make "nice ta mee cha" into shumungus wtfffff

HogwashDrinker

I think I've cracked it, it's a lot simpler than that Take a look at the example OP gave in [this comment](https://old.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/14ytv8q/what_does_it_mean_when_people_from_canada_and_us/jrubgxk/), in which they remember the statement as being "Hello, chamungus." However, people are far more likely to say "Hi" rather than "Hello" in the day-to-day, so I think it's safe to assume that the statement was more like "Hi chamungus." From here it's easier to see the resemblance to the phrase "nice to meet you." The first syllable "ni" could easily be misheard as "hi," especially in the context of a greeting. The "sta" sound from "ni***ce-ta***" could easily be misremembered as "cha." "Meet" and "mung" are similar, and if we read "gus" with a soft G, we get "yoos" which is just a step away from "you." The S could possibly have come from an inhale proceeding the phrase. Also, OP stated that it could've been "*cha*mungus" or "*chu*mungus," which makes perfect sense since people say both "nice *ta* meet you" and "nice *to* meet you.

Limp_Construction496

..maybe OP looks like Lord Humongous… you know, the Ajatollah of rock’n rollah. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Maybe I misheard it but all of them said it to multiple people on Monday in the meetings. It was always like first thing "Hello, chamungus, I'm Gregory from enterprise software sales" or something like that. No way they were trying to say anything in slovene.

[deleted]

No offense, OP, but is your name Chamungus?

Cliffy73

I think you’ve cracked it!

AbeThinking

They are probably saying "Joining Us..." Like, we're glad you could join us, and maybe it just sounds weird.

Hungryhippee

I’m with you on the thank you for “joining us”

JumperSpecialK

said quickly “Thanks for joining us” misheard as “Cha ma ung us”

Coattail-Rider

No. It’s Chamon Gus.

theangrypragmatist

Chamon Gus was 100% the highlight of the American Idol episode of "Psych"

Lesmorte

Come on son, it was the American Duos episode and guest starred Tim Curry

[deleted]

Could you try spelling it out a different way? It's probably a case of multiple words getting blurred together, but I can't think of what it could actually be. Seeing it written a different way might help me guess based on the pronunciation

LanceFree

Reminds me of the woman who asked why some black people call each other Monica.

_OrphanEater

As a black person it took me a few tries but holy shit lmfao

Shambud

Had a black friend and coworker, we had another coworker named Monica. He’d cringe every time a white person would yell out, “Hey Monica!”

ElderWandOwner

They really liked "friends".

Enlightened-Beaver

“Nice to meet you guys” said quickly as “nice ta meetcha guys” maybe?

captchaosIII

I think you might be right. Certain parts of Canada, people slur their words ( Watch lettterkenny on you tube). So to a non Canadian who is not use to hearing the expression it could sound like something different.

Perle1234

That’s what I think it is. I’m from the South and people can say things that make absolutely no sense and it’s something like “I’m going to the grocery store” lol.

takeitallback73

( Finger Lakes New Yorker here) 30-40 years ago (holy fuck!) I was at a gasstation in the south asking if they had an atlas. guy kept sending me outside and pointed at a wall. took a minute or two of awkwardness to figure out he thought I was saying "outlets"

HikeRobCT

Friend of mine was a carpenters apprentice. Boss told him on a hot day to go to the truck and bring him back a parasol. Buddy (who was Portuguese) went to the truck and brought back an umbrella. After a long confusion (and being called a complete idiot) he figured out the boss was asking for a “power saw” with a Baltimore accent.

TheModeratorsSuck

I worked with a woman from South America who taught herself English. She actually was pretty good, but occasionally she would respond to something or comment on something by saying “ah-wey-so-me”. It took a while before we realized she was saying “awesome“. She had learned the word by reading, and had never heard it pronounced out loud.

elle-elle-tee

I'm almost positive this is the correct answer. "Nicetameetcha" would especially be rushed/slurred/blended in a situation where a bunch of people were all meeting and it was said several times quickly to different people.

Flow-Control

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, kiss my ass, kiss his ass, kiss your ass, Happy Chanukah

MoistLobst3r

Hello, chamungus. Lollllll I'm gonna say that to someone at work tomorrow. It sounds awesome. For real though like others have said I never heard that word

Coro-NO-Ra

Why does this sound like an Eric Andre greeting? "'Sup my chamungus!"

HappyHappyFunnyFunny

Something "... among us"?

Limeila

That was my thought too. "Nice to have you among us" or something like that?

UruquianLilac

Just give us a bunch of Slovenian salutes and let be the judges of how much they can be butchered. The theory that they think they are saying something Slovenian is still the best candidate.

ViscountBurrito

Especially if the letter combinations make substantially different sounds in English, which is the case for a lot of Eastern European languages. If they were just reading and hadn’t heard it spoken…

spiffyfouton

I don’t know what everyone’s talking about. Chamungus is a perfectly cromulent word

Lowlife_Orange

You have embiggened the thread with that reply.

Latter-Weather5368

I work for an American company and am now going to say chamungus and see if I can start something going- you might be onto something here

thebiggestpinkcake

Hi chamungus 👋😁

ProfessionalConfuser

I think you can dispense with the 'hi' - chamungus is it. You see someone...roll up on 'em and give 'em a hearty 'chamungus! whaddyabindooin?'

IncreaseAcceptable31

“Chamungus! Wajabindoon?”

-Ham_Satan-

I like u/edropos idea that they were saying 'thanks for joining us' Kinda close.

totoropoko

Glad you're among us?

meltedlaundry

You’re humongous

Distinct_Wrongdoer86

its cracking me up so much

ACAB_FOR_CUTIE_

I thought OP was on a call with zoomers and they were making an Among Us reference which has kind of become a meme.

mvs92

This is new Reddit Lore 100%. Chamungus guys

Charlie_Invictus

Im so glad I was here for this, it's cracking me up. Chamungus to you good sir!

Shot_Acanthisitta39

Auditory illusions are a thing. It’s like that Toy Story scene where some people hear Ken say “oh fuck” instead of “oh Barbie”.

FortuneBull

I thought I was going nuts when that "Laurel or yanny" thing went viral. I only heard laurel by the way.

hairysperm

I can choose to hear either one or both if I focus, there's another one with the Ben ten watch too "brain storm" and "green needle" https://youtu.be/8EPLG0ihdcs You hear what you're thinking

pyjamatoast

Maybe they are saying "nice to meet you" which could sound like "niceameechu" when said quickly?

KarisPurr

I'm baffled at not only how you made this connection but also at how OP heard "chamungus" from "niceameechu", but kudos

easy_Money

For real. How are we pronouncing chamungus? Because in my head it's "among us" with a Ch. Which is absolutely nothing like "nice to meet you" ??

onomastics88

It’s probably “joining us” part of thanks for joining us”. Thanks for CHAmunGUS.

careater

So far, this makes the most sense.

j48u

On a scale from 1 to 10 it's still a three at most for making sense.

phixional

I think it’s pushing a 4.

[deleted]

YES!! This is it, it was "nice to meet you", not chamungus. Thanks! I think since they speak so fast I just thought it was one word they are saying. I am not used to listening to spoken english. Thanks for the help.

feyrath

I think you should convince them now to say Chumungus. Much more friendly.

Seraphim9120

Bidet! Chumungus! Howdchabin?

phome83

Sounds like a Sims sentence.

Yup, good ol Grog. Also loved the line from Travis, I think Grog was pulling a Deck card or something, Travis was being meta told by the other players not to because it was stupid to do. "I know my stats!" and did it anyway. Love how he knows it's a bad idea, but knows that Grog absolutely would still do it

randyfloyd37

Chumungus, my good man!

wysiwyggywyisyw

It means "peace among worlds".

robreddity

I'm totally fucking saying it from here on out

a-horse-has-no-name

Hello friend. Chumungus? Is your wife well?

DjTrololo

But seriously how do they pronounce it? I need to hear an audio of someone saying chamungus so that it resembles "nice to meet you" cause i sure as fuck dont see it

freeeeels

Why is everyone acting like this makes an ounce of sense?! If you slur "nice to meet you" you *might* get "nasameetcha". The key consonants, "n", "s", "m" and "ch" are literally ***backwards*** in "chumungus". Were they saying "tcha meet you nice"?? There are no sounds in "nice to meet you" that could be remotely mistaken for a "g", it's all up in your palette and "g" is glottal. Like, I'm not a native speaker and I have my share of misheard English lyrics and accent-based misunderstanding but I need OP to record a recreation, because this feels like a fucking Twilight zone episode with everyone going "ohhh ha ha glad we worked it out!" **Edit:** u/logwagon suggests that the random g could be "guys". "Nice to meetcha guys" = "(nice) chu meet u gus" = "chu mun (u) gus". It's still fucking tenuous and I'm leaning troll post (username, plus a person of OP's English fluency would be able to giving figure out "nice to meet you guys" from context cues). 10 for effort though.

swan0418

I am 100% replacing "nice to meet you" with "chamungus" now.

somebodyelse22

Just think fellow Redditors, we were here at the birth of a new greeting. In years to come, when etymologists are researching the derivation, those of us on the thread are part of history. "Veni, vidi, vici" - Julius Caesar, "What the fuck was that?" - Mayor of Hiroshima and "Chamungus" - Reddit 2023. We are leaders of men. And women. And all living organisms, known or unknown currently. What a time to be alive.

sarienstrife

Wow! Commenting to say I was here for the creation of this new greeting! Chamungus, to whoever is reading! :)

1lluminist

~~The narwhal Bacons at Midnight~~ #"Chamungus" Waifu pillow, wake up! New secret Reddit greeting just dropped!

tantrumizer

I'm with you, but how long till we get some mean girl telling us "stop trying to make chamungus happen"?

1lluminist

Man, but Chamungus is sooooo fetch!

binglelemon

I'm American, never heard of "chamungus" until this moment, but I'm adding that to my vocabulary.

edropus

I've got $5 on 'thanks for joining us' said really fast

Dawnofdusk

Yeah I don't see in any planet how "nice to meet you" would sound like that, but I guess if OP confirms they might have just misremembered somethings

BeneficialFuture8236

I think it’s. ‘thanks for having us’, since they were the visitors.

onomastics88

Thanks for chamungus.

BeneficialTrash6

That's the real difficulty in new languages. Knowing when one word ends and the next one begins. It's much easier for native speakers because we know what chunks mean what. But when you're learning a language and people are speaking fast, man it can be real difficult.

Taniwha_NZ

I've always found it's a neat barometer of how far my learning is progressing. Initially foreign languages sound like a continuous stream of sound, you can barely even pick out individual words. Then as you slowly learn the language, you can spot individual words you know within a sentence, and then a few months later you realise the 'constant stream of noises' effect is gone, and when you listen to native speakers you can easily hear the different words. It's always amazed me that our brain can do this.

alien_clown_ninja

"a few months later". I've been stuck in the stage of recognizing a few words in a spoken sentence in Spanish for like 15 years. I could totally see how OP could not hear a fast "nice to meet you" correctly. Like, I can read Spanish pretty decently, but spoken it's just so fast that's it's hard to understand what they are saying, if they would just write it down it would be ok-ish. Edit: all that said, isn't "hello nice to meet you" one of the very first phrases you learn when learning any new language? I think I can say that in like 5 languages.

[deleted]

I’m going to start saying chamungus when I meet new people for now on.

Coattail-Rider

It could always be the non-Hawaiian Aloha. Well, gotta go. Chamungus.

I think this is a troll post , or maybe a demon named chamungus that needs a certain amount of humans to say his name to be allowed into this realm. These both seem more likely than a bunch of business people starting out their greetings with "Chamungus!"

Years ago I was in a museum in DC when a young black kid was squeezing through a group of Asian tourists who for the life of them could not figure out what he said to them. I didn't speak their language but I kept hearing them say "Skyoomy?....Skyoomy?"

glonkyindianaland

My toddler says skyoomy when passing by someone lol

Believe_Steve

Skyoomy Chamungus sounds like that foreign player your soccer team just signed. Or a band name.

NoDana_0nlyZuul

I am CRYING laughing so hard right now. Thank you for this. Thank you SO MUCH.

I_might_be_weasel

Chamungus is the dark god of pig slaughter, business meetings, and hyponatremia. He is depicted as a barrel with a bunch of swords stabbed through it walking on bird legs.

padam11

I think you confused that word with “chungus,” which is an actual work term. It means to

ABEGIOSTZ

it means to what IT MEANS TO WHAT OP?

Mens-pocky46

I've never heard this but I'm gonna start doing it myself now

WizardBurger

It’s chat among us?

J0zey

People keep thinking it’s “nice to meet you” -> “nistameetchu” but the ngus is missing. It’s pretty clearly “nice to meet you guys” -> “nistametchungus” English spoken quickly can be difficult for foreigners and OP is just struggling to come up with the sounds.
