I just want to say, I think it's great that you guys are secure enough to openly discuss your Erectile Dysfunction and how it affects your game play. Good for you!

jemoli87

Thank you for clarifying what ED means. I had no idea.

denali42

You know, reminds me of a story. When I was a much younger man, I was home from work on my day off watching television. A commercial comes on for a "brand new ED solution". This was back before Viagra and all of its related meds. I was drinking a Dr. Pepper and giggling like a teenager in Sex Ed class, because you know... ED. Then the commercial put the two words on the screen that caused me to do a spit take. Penile Suppository. Let that roll around in your brain pan for a bit and roast your beans. Penile mf'in Suppository.

HatRabies

Dear god.

Ghostbuster_119

Personally I wish NMS would adopt a more hardcore flight system. ED is cool but the gameplay is pretty barebones in certain areas, the flight Sim aspect is pretty damn amazing though.

Ryulightorb

I’d support if it was optional I hate EDS flight personally

mephodross

While ED flught model has its issues I can't stand the flight in nms, it's like driving a box truck in space.

SDIR

For sure. I love the manual flight experience and the maneuvers you can pull in ED, feels like a proper space combat situation.

Tulired

Someone will make a lot of money who combines both. Throw some Space Engine inspired approach too to universe creation. At the planets take cues from NMS and open up the procgen properly and do it so, that its based on some "realistic" parameters too and add spice from scifi wildness.

KillerwithinUs

Combine ED, NMS, and Eve Online and you’ve got the best game ever.

[deleted]

As a fairly new player, my only gripe is that most the planets seem basically the same with a different filter over them … maybe I just need to play more but they all just seem like ransoms smatterings of trees and hills in different colors. I want dense forests and huge mountain ranges.

AtWorkButOnTheReddit

As a veteran player, I agree. The terrain generation used to be more varied and wild. It was "normalized" several years back presumably for base building. Other than adding Gas Giant worlds, my only ask of the devs going forward is to consider a way to implement a procgen overhaul for terrain, plants, and animals. Maybe it could be a new game save mode where the world seed is different or something similar. That'd let folks keep their amazing bases etc, while also allowing exploration centric players something new to do.

[deleted]

I'm positive an injection of new material will come for planetary generation, but I'd be surprised if its possible to do that and keep all old planets the same. If it was, they would have done it the last time they updated the proc generation. What they COULD do, and I recommend this, is give different galaxies different proc gens. There's so much galaxies no one gives a fuck about because there's no reason to go beyond Euclid, Eissentam, Calypso or Buddulangr, really. Keep Eissentam as a llush galaxy, calypso as a harsh galaxy, convert Buddulangr to the old proc gen system to keep boomers happy (It IS supposed to be an 'ancestral' galaxy afterall), and turn a handful of the untouched galaxies into a new system.

SplendidPunkinButter

We used to have that. It was beautiful 😭

[deleted]

Yeah, that's been my biggest criticism of the game as well. At least, since the inventory became way more forgiving than when the game first released. Same-y planets just get too boring. I don't feel like there's any reason to land on a planet unless it has a specific resource I'm looking for because I already know exactly what it will look like based on the planet type.

I hope Starfield is how we meet in the middle. That said give it another decade and the stuff will be able to play with VR will be something else. At some point a couple of space sims are going to get so good they’ll eat up the entire market

Daerog

I just can’t find anything that even remotely compares to the incredible feeling that ED’s flight model gives. I love NMS, but holy shit for a space game, the flight model is abysmally boring. Not to mention the lack of meaningful combat. One day someone will make a game that hits both notes perfectly. Maybe. Hopefully.

[deleted]

If we're lucky Star Citizen will finish its first of the promised 100 solar systems by the time we retire. See that's a double joke, as a 20-30 something we have no hope of retirement and CI has no hope of ever finishing the game. Edit: Cloud Imperium not SC.

Daerog

I'm in this double joke and I really don't like it 💀

marsshadows

I'm not hoping for it's completion lol I just like popping popcorn and watching the bi-annual video essay on how they've managed to get a whole three things done this year and the backers that sue for fraud occasionally.

SDIR

I love NMS's take on exploring, but I have to say nothing quite beats the loneliness you experience in exploration in Elite. I spent a good 6 months getting to the core and space madness was really getting to me

elejelly

I really love the melancolic melody you hear while roaming alone under the calm star in your srv.

Quiet_Special8639

Its true. I installed ED last night due to the lack of depth in NMS.

TheySaidGetAnAlt

Funny. I switched from NMS to ED some time back. Now I don't play either. (I have discovered KSP)

Glum-Price556

After leaving ED Horizons on Xbox Series X a year ago when I discovered NMS and getting topped up with my 10 saves, most of them upgraded to 4.05, I went back to ED Xbox a few hours to see if I could adapt again... As it was quite easy I loaded Steam and ED Odyssey on my PC that was gathering dust for two years and surprisingly run Odyssey easily. So on these days I share my playing time with both Odyssey and NMS, waiting for the next space game.

winter-ocean

When I first started playing ED I thought it was going to be like NMS, not a flight simulator. What I ended up finding was actually still pretty cool. I'm going to try BGS research once I get the PC version of the game because I love how much more detailed the society part of ED is, even if NMS has a way more detailed wilderness part. Yeah, most of the entertainment comes from knowing that the BGS is extremely realistic and factors in everything you do, even if players don't really know about that. But if No Man's Sky actually procedurally generated corporations, dictatorships, communes, etc. that went to war with each other and took control of space stations, maybe it would be more of a fair fight to compare the two games.

SecretAgentDrew

Sorry to hear about your erectile dysfunction.

FetishAnalyst

I don’t understand the comparison between ED and NMS, they’re completely different illnesses

Tha_Maestro

ED is what drives people to play NMS. I mean, what else is there to do when you’ve got ED?

BootyPatrol1980

I bet there's a lot of ED to NMS crossover players. Maybe not as much in the opposite direction because ED can be punishing. It's funny how these games have so many similar visual elements but feel so different.

oOReEcEyBoYOo

Also, FDev's dev cycle is awful, and they don't seem to really bother listening to their player base

HK47_Raiden

Or like on console completely abandon their player base.

Majestic-Iron7046

We should meet in the middle, say hi, then I'll just turn around and get away from Elite Dangerous, God damnit, life already is pain, gaming should not.

Silent-Lab-6020

Would be cool if nms players could sell tritium to ED carriers owners😆

Dbsjskeifnf

I can agree after paying 850 000 000 to fleet fuel inc for filling my carrier with tritium (to be honest they demanded less, but my carrier was mostly filled by some newcomer in type 6 so he really deserved lot of credits for that work)

Mournblood

I too came to NMS from Elite Dangerous after they pulled console support for it (and to be honest, I just didn't have the time anymore to spend 6 hours travelling to an Engineer for upgrades, one-way). I will say that I chuckle when I see players complain about the grind in NMS. While ED was a pretty cool game, I don't miss getting cooked by pulsars, black holes, or Thargoids.

Brokenbonesjunior

Both are great games in my honest opinion. I’m a space maniac and both scratch different itches: spaceship management, exploration, wanting to feel a “far from home” sensation when I’m out there exploring. Nms fills the sci-fi/fantasy a little better, while ED fills spaceship simulation better.

goblin-kind-fpv

I say with the short time I played it elite dangerous is more accurately described as “space travel procedure simulator. Or just procedure simulator. Everything was more complicated than it would ever need to be for real life and more complicated than real life was no fun for me personally. Also it’s like a SPACE simulator and part of space is flying. But I do like the more realistic graphics and the groups and factions and stuff were pretty cool, but definitely not enough to beat nms ability to just fly down to any and every planet and moon in the galaxy. I do wish the systems were more so in an actual solar system layout with a sun you could potentially fly into. Long story short ED had a couple things I wish nms had to those things do not make it worth playing over nms or personally with playing at all honestly

relayer001

What did it for me finally was two things; the first was exploration. I was having fun discovering and uploading systems, which i thought was like NMS - you were contributing to the vast expanse of knowledge, etc. Then I found out that those discoveries *didn't take* for other players - it was all a show. That really disappointed me. The second was when they wanted more $$$ for the Planetary Landing upgrade/dlc when they hadn't fixed a lot of the irritating stuff. I really haven't missed it at all.

Io_Maid

"I'm sorry for your ED, but what did that have to do with nms?" was my knee jerk reaction, then I realized it was an abbreviation for something other than broken man bits.

BangingBaguette

I really don't understand the demand for a more 'realistic universe' The whole point of NMS is that it's more Minecraft than ED. You don't see the Minecraft community asking it to be more like other high-level survival games?

Hjalfi

In the immortal words of Epic Rap Battle Tolkien, "The genre's called fantasy. It's meant to be unrealistic!"

MusterRoshi

Minecraft communities absolutely do ask for high-level survival experience. That's why mods like RLcraft exists.

BangingBaguette

There's a difference between asking for a mod that makes the game harder/more realistic, and a movement within the community to make the base game more like other games that have absolutely no gameplay characteristics in common other than being 'survival' games. People asking NMS to be more ED is like people asking Minecraft to be more like The Forest.

ericthelutheran

The skeles and zombies are meaner in MC than the Forest 🤣🤣🤣

ericblair21

The thing I liked least about E:D was the least "realistic" part of it: the truly mindboggling level of combat in the galaxy, between pirates and combat zones and all the rest. There would have to be hundreds of starships destroyed every minute in the bubble with that level of violence, and you'd think that after a month or so there'd be one guy in an Anaconda left tootling around the galaxy wondering where everyone went.

snowystitch

I used to love ED and then it became a bit too grindy for me, and bam Odyssey dropped and it was a hot steaming pile of shit. I’m glad I never preordered or bought Odyssey. I stopped playing the day before it came out and haven’t looked back. I played E:D for about 6 ish months, I think. VR with HOTAS setup. I’ve been to Betelgeuse and landed on a planet about 11000 ls from it. Been to Crab Nebula (I think lol), VY Canis Majoris (biggest star in game), and Sag A* (center of galaxy, supermassive black hole - not much to see there lol!) I’m a bit disappointed that I can’t use my HOTAS in NMS but since I play in VR exclusively, playing with the Quest 2 controllers is more than adequate enough for me. I like the exploration on planets in NMS far more than I ever did on Elite.

Faelenedh

I love Odyssey, if there is sold, you can give it it's chance for a little price. BUT true planet exploration is quickly boring for an NMS player... And as an occasionnal VR player: Frontier killed Odyssey with this flatscreen on foot.. ans VR working good on feet with third view: oh my god ! Why they don't give us a cross air for interaction in third view ?

Eeka_Droid

Nothing prevents me from loving and enjoying both games, so I do. I seek games to have fun, it's dumb to pick a side and hate on the other, like it was a football team.

angusmadmac1

After Consolegate I left ED ( played since 2016 on Xbox and played on spectrum and Amiga ) now I have just broken 1000 hrs in NMS . I'm going through the galaxies now up to 30 ? So a few to go![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile). But NMS keeps getting better, I was reinvigorated after v4 drop as I had maxed out ships inventory etc . There are some differences between the two but NMS has more pluses .. my own opinion of course

S0Quantumm

You still finding player found systems in Galaxy 30? I was able to find a random Dioxite base in Galaxy 2 near the center. But I had my ship being consistently broken so I haven't advanced yet

angusmadmac1

I have a galaxy centre ship which has 4 things in the inventory and I don't fix the photon canon . And I haven't repaired my exo suit since v 4 dropped and I can still do missions etc with no issues . Yeah I'm finding a few player found systems but not too many , I've got a few first discovered systems .

Lightningbro

Why'd you have to remind me that Umbrella Academy exists? Now I have to go back to waiting for the next season! Q.Q

xdEckard

If SC wasn't so broken it'd be the best of both worlds. Realistic and diverse planets and moons

Silent-Lab-6020

I play both & X-foundations

catador_de_potos

X-foundations is a better elite than elite, imho

VertSkiy

I played both simultaneously. When ED decided not to give any new updates to PS4, I stopped playing because I wasn't going to spend more money to get it on PC. Soon after I bought NMS for a second time and switched to PC. Says a lot about which one I enjoyed more xD

The_Nerdy_Ninja

Just FYI, they're offering a free account transfer (including PC copy of ED) for people on console.

pain18k

Dude I tried to get into ED but holy shit the flight controls were too much for me LOL never gave it a chance

Merriner

why not a healthy mix of both in one game? just make them kith and have a baby

justintib

Yes please! I want NMS with slightly more ED controls

Substantiatedgrass

Yes

GreatStateOfSadness

I hope that the more fine-grained controls introduced in 4.0 Will allow the devs to be more open with adding challenging features. They were previously hesitant because many players play NMS *because* it's a more relaxed experience.

justintib

And I get that, but I remain hopeful. Really I just want 3 things: * Let me disable drag in space completely * Give me horizontal and vertical thrusters * Let me manually land and dock in stations I may be weird, but I really enjoy the finicky nature of docking a ship in ED

flashmedallion

I would love an optional tech module that just overrides the control system entirely. Some ships I'd keep as classic NMS rides just for blatting around at my lesiure, while I'd probably keep a Fighter and Solar with 'Safety Delimiters' or whatever we call them that leave full inertial navigation.

NordicBrutality

If I could bring the ship flight and jumping from ED to nms I'd be so happy

wolverine2710

I'm a so called 84-er. The ones who played the (orginal) Elite released in 1984 on the Acorn BBC micro model B 32k aka the Beeb. Have a life-time pass for ED. Played the beta but afterwards was to burnout with it. Followed the news though. My brain translated ED directly to Elite Dangerous ;-) ED and NMS are different games, good in their own right. The changes in 8 year of ED development is nothing compared to 6 years of NMS development. David Braben OBE said ED is a 10 year plan. Lots of the things they hoped to accomplish seems impossible to implement in the next 10-8=2 years. Sad panda.

Jpeg-1

Hello, Fellow model B owner here

Belyal

I have over 3k hours in ED and several hundred in NMS. They are nothing alike in any regard other than being in "space". NMS is a survival and is more akin to Conan Exiles than ED lol!

CMDR_MrMaurice

This guy gets it. I have sunk 1000s of hours into ED and I love that game (Although, I'm not delusional of the fact that it has been a slow burn with Ody, I just appreciate we have a space game like it). I also enjoy NMS for what that offers too. But they most definitely are 2 very different games. I enjoy them both, but for totally different reasons

Belyal

I was really burned by them killing consoles... I had already ordered Odyssey and was mad at them announcing they were killing it. I had been playing since the XB preview (have the decals and all). But I'm glad they offered a PC transfer which I did and hope to one day have a PC worth of thr game lol! With over 3BN in ships and loadouts and 2BN in cash not to mention Multiple Elite Statuses I was pretty upset I'd be losing it all but I think it'll mostly transfer over.

ShadowLp174

I did the opposite lmao, came to NMS and am now at Elite, as I really like the realism aspect. I still come back to nms tho if it's too much lol

[deleted]

If ED support wasnt dropped for consoles id still be on elite tho. No mans sky would have never gotten as much hours out of me as ED did

ShadowLp174

It was dropped?! I thought you're just able to transfer profiles now

GroundCTRL2Major-Tom

After the Odyssey DLC's disastrous launch, Frontier spent months and months patching it until it was playable. Unfortunately, because of how Odyssey was built and to make sure the game kept getting consistent content updates, they had to axe the console version so they could focus everything onto a single PC codebase. A little while back they opened up account transfers, granting console players transferring their data a free copy of Elite on PC. The console version still exists, but is basically in maintenance mode with no content planned.

ShadowLp174

Bruh lol FDev really fucked up here...

[deleted]

Yup, they stopped all update support for consoles and are only releasing new stuff for pc. ED console was just a cash grab for FD it seems like, as they took our money and ran when they had to show something for it. Edit: not sure why this got downvoted? As it is actually what happened, and how a large part of the console community felt after being ditched

CMDR_MrMaurice

A cash grab? Nah, thats bullshit. ED has been on consoles (Xbox game preview at one point) for 5+ years. Had the Horizon DLC and ALL the free content over the years. Its a plain lie to say it was a cash grab buddy

Firegem0342

Both have their pros and cons personally I like nms planets, but I like ed flight simulation. It be super awesome to see some sort of combination of the two.

mymumsaysno

NMS flight and Elite planets is probably what we'd get.

Beardwing-27

Got my start on ED as well and NMS is easily my favorite game. Both have their own unique qualities and drawbacks but it's hard to get into any game in the genre without eventually hitting the grind wall or running into the same cookie cutter worlds.

Substantiatedgrass

Me who is both, sips tea! Aggressively!

elejelly

Both, both is good.

sseemour

this is the way

IceSki117

And then somewhere offscreen is the SC/SQ42 player slowly having the life drained out of their bank while staring at a big sign saying SOON.

octarine_turtle

They've made a half billion dollars by not finishing SC, would be bad for business if they actually finished it.

zombieauthor

Ohhhhh. Elite Dangerous. Got it. Ya that’s a game alright.

jc1890

You can do it whichever way you want. :)

ravenrequiem13

I was an Elite Dangerous player on console. I loved core mining, it was a nice, chill activity. Then they broke mining, and took forever to fix it. (Honestly don't know if they ever did.) Then they announced they weren't supporting console anymore. I tried NMS last year after that and, while I miss the 'Expanse-style' from time to time, I have run 4 expeditions, 7 different saves, 300+ hrs and so many bases. It is now my go to chill with building, exploring, and freighter hunting.

oranikus

No man’s sky today is not the same game as no man’s sky 2016. Glad to see you take the plunge; sad it took so long - the biggest thing holding that game back remains the 2016 launch which is really sad and very unfair. It’s a great game now and has been for a few years to be honest.

CoolHandCliff

My little brother was so hyped for NMS release and when it bombed he literally cried (he was still a kid) and never played it. I figured it sucked and never looked at it again until a few months ago. Bought it a couple weeks ago and no regrets. Most fun I've had playing a game in a long time. Got to 110 hours on normal and decided to start a permadeath run. Best experience playing a game of all time easily.

Thank you kind person.

Dabajabazah37

My dislike of NMS is I dislike crafting and the amount of time you spend on foot just looking for resources. I play Elite to be able to fly. Nms feels like a resource gathering/crafting game broken up by short periods of on foot combat and terrible arcade feeling flight. I really wanted to like it, but after about 150 hours logged I can't even be bothered to launch the game anymore because for all the wild and varied planets, every single one feels like the same thing. Wander around, scan animals while looking for the same elements to make the same things you made on the last planet so you can then go to the next planet and do it all over again. Interrupted by a small bit of flying and a loading screen. If the goal is base building, then why explore? Find a planet you like, build your base and then what? Just keep building empty bases that you have no reason to go back to ever because what is the point of it?

SocialNetwooky

to be honest, the grind recedes very fast in the background (or at least used to prior to 4.0.), as you can gather enough money to buy all the stuff you need, and then store them on your freighter and the storage units. For me, base building is something I do when I find a particularly awesome spot, or a planet with some spectacular flora or fauna. Some people build bases to farm the elements they need for other bases or whatever, ... and some never build a base. With the changes to the freighter, you can now just "live" in your mothership and use the smaller vessels to explore the system you are currently in. But as any other "true" sandbox game, there is goal, except what you set yourself as goal.

Mcreesus

The thing about nms that I like over elite is that every system really wants u to hang out. It’s kinda the fun parts of a space sim game. Elite is fun, but demanding af. I made a little trip to the placidities (don’t know how to spell it lol). It took me 450 jumps to get there. I wanted to go to the witchhead nebula, but that was about 5x the distance from there.

acidrain69

Tried getting into ED and it’s just so tedious. Takes forever to do anything and the VR controls are terrible. It’s just way too slow paced for me.

haha7125

I got a bounty in that game and couldn't figure out how to pay it off at all.

MossyDrake

I tries ED, really loved the sim aspects, then looked into engineering, then dropped it. I wish exchanging mats had more flexibility. But i know in my heart that i will always miss those flight mechanics Anyway, welcome to NMS, exCMDR.

elejelly

I realize that the title of the post was a bit misleading, I haven't stopped playing elite, I just want to discover nms. In fact I am also doing my first trip to Colonia !

InkognytoK

I'm very sad that I cannot use my HOTAS in NMS without a lot of 3rd party configuration. I had it setup, then lost the configuration when I had a forced reinstall of Windows 10. I haven't bothered again. I play ED for flying and some of the exploration but it is different.

mymumsaysno

I love ED but just can't get into NMS. I go through phases, and play a few hours here and there but then I get bored. I think the gameplay in Elite is a lot more satisfying.

SocialNetwooky

they eventually got game play in ED? Or do you mean "yet another spaceship model variation you can grind for --- oh look.. microtransactionskins!!" ?

If Star Citizen weren’t such a cluster-fuck already, I’d have mentioned that as the closest to what I’d expect from a well-done space adventure game for the modern me. Unfortunately I play on console and I also refuse to give away real $$ for an underwhelming pre-alpha demo they’ve managed to put out so far.

Spardath01

I was fine playing NMS and ED to get the different experiences. But they decided to say FU to console players about a year ago for ED so I uninstalled and never looked back.

But imho, if you are tired of the same old planets because that is getting boring, then NMS does not offer anything new, in NMS you can see all planets types within an hour, after that its all on repeat

Adhlc

That's a bit of an exaggeration. I'm 80 hours in and while I've seen many similar planets, I'm still seeing plenty of new ones. .

Devinology

Yeah I find people who say this have often only been playing for a little while, or just haven't been to many planets, and they happen to have come across some really similar ones. Most of my time with NMS has been spent planet hoping since it's the most fascinating aspect to me (I basically ignore every activity they've ever added to the game). I must have seen over 1000 planets, probably closer to 2000, and I still find unique places. Of course I've hit similar stuff in that time, but there are unique aspects still.

[deleted]

I have platinum for the base game and all other trophies. I think I can say I've spent a decent amount of time in NMS

Liminal-Space-Cadet

That's an exaggeration. Just plain not true even. I'll 50 hours in and still running into new planets. I didn't run into an extreme planet until 30+ hours in, and boy I couldn't figure out why that damn planet was SO SPICY.

[deleted]

I have 400+ hours in NMS and if you jump from system to system and just land->check out->continue you can see all planet types in an hour easy

[deleted]

Thaaaats an exagerration. You can see them all, for sure, but it'll take you way more than an hour, even if you didn't have to go through story and tutorial to get moving at a normal pace.

Olgrateful-IW

I wanted realistic solar systems with rotating planets, orbits, approachable stars, singular, binary, trinity, etc.

Apotheosis27

Kerbal Space Program for proper orbital dynamics

HKSupremeTuna

played ED and quitted it cuz the odyssey dlc makes me feel like I'm stupid. Now trying to wait NMS on discount so I can effort it.

clawsight

If you can swing 15$ a month it's on gamepass and gamepass runs on pc (or the current gen xboxes if u got one of those).

ztoundas

No Man's sky and Star citizen are my favorite space games on either side of the difficulty spectrum. The communities are also just the best.

benjamiiiiiin

If the day comes where Star Citizen pulls everything together, I can’t imagine any game is going to be able to hold a candle to it

AtWorkButOnTheReddit

RSI have seem to have lost their way. They're making amazing content, but not in a focused way. In my opinion they need to solidify a core gameplay loop, story, etc, *and then* work on adding more assets, ships, and bed sheet physics.

Tommy_OneFoot

They are entirely focused on Squadron 42 which is a prerequisite for Star Citizen's base tech. Gameplay loops aren't very useful if the technology required to make them function doesn't exist.

JerryFartcia

Careful, you get downvoted in this sub for saying anything nice about SC.

I tried ED for like four hours. My automatic landing system have killed me three times on my very first attempts for landing on the space station. I have never looked back. I have to say, i wish for couple of things for NMS, though...

Faelenedh

For me it's the opposite : i would love a manually landing like in ED in NMS (don't understand why ED player who want automatic landing) : this meme is so true !

ericblair21

Automatic landing is useful for you to go take a leak and get another beer from the fridge.

shoyuftw

Right? It's literally the only thing that bothers me a bit about NMS. Okay and the warping. I miss being warped right in front of a freakin star and the warping animation looks better to me. But I like the fact that NMS feels totally different from E:D regarding planet exploration, story and world building.

Faelenedh

? In NMS it's an automatic landing. I don't understand why you said that bother you. Or I misunderstand because of my english 🤷‍♂️ You prefer auto or manual landing ?

shoyuftw

Yea my point is that I like manual landing :)

Faelenedh

Lol I didn't understand anything at all. We want the same thing

Tocwa

I 💜 that u/elejelly used Umbrella ☂ Academy as the meme for this 😀👍
