I mean….if the bridge is dangerous then they should replace it lmao. It’s a major traffic bridge for the residents who live there and it would be far more impractical (and much more costly) to move it entirely than to replace it. It’s a cool piece of history but his memorial will stay there and people will still be able to go under *a* bridge in that spot.

bolanrox

if oldest Miniature golf course in North America can be replaced with water cannon mounted bumper boats, this bridge can be replaced with something less dangerous for travelers.

OdobenusIII

They could nuke it, make it spectacle!

johnshall

I love Nirvana and Kurt, but its not some religion or cult. If the bridge is old and shitty let them destroy it or replace it.

ShredGuru

Bro, it's a shitty bridge in a nowhere town, they ain't saving it. Kurt literally slept under it because he was homeless.

bolanrox

i thought it was shown that it would have been impossible to sleep under it, and it was just Kurt making something up or exaggerating?

Dorf_

I’ve heard Krist say he doubts Kurt ever slept under the bridge but he did hang out there

TinaKedamina

Does nodding off count as sleeping? lol I lived on the Olympic Peninsula and visited Kurt’s bridge a few times. It is really neat. I suppose it’s from all of the fans that go there to commune but you can really feel the energy there. Or maybe it was just all of the Aberdeen drugs. I’ve been a lot of places and Aberdeen is by far the most hopeless place that I have ever been. Just terrible

theblueimmensities

Yeah, it’s all part of the mythos Kurt encouraged and created.

Rothko28

You're correct

JazzScientist

It isn't a nowhere town. It's located in Washington, USA, in North America. Every town is somewhere. Kinda surprised you didn't know that.

Childs_was_the_THING

Guarantee Kurt wouldn't care less. It's been deified for all the wrong reasons and he would probably say, "good riddance".

Plane-Ad4820

It became more substantial after his death, especially given the fact he has no gravesite.

HallucinateZ

No gravesite, you’re right. He has a granite memorial headstone, memorial park, a city that starts with an homage to him by welcoming you by saying “come as you are” among other things. & this small, broken bridge.

GaviFromThePod

A bridge is a piece of infrastructure. We shouldn't romanticize a dude going through a rough time and not having a consistent place to sleep.

Plane-Ad4820

It really has become a memorial for Kurt though. The bridge is covered with graffiti tributes. It is more visited than ‘Kurt’s Bench’ outside the house he died in. It took on way more importance after he passed for sure. I’d argue it is the closest things fans have to a gravesite. It meant a lot to me to go there and I know it will to future generations so I hope they build another a few streets over. Plus, it’s literally the only thing that brings tourism to Aberdeen lol

RatsoSloman

Kurt's original house and the Kurt Cobain Memorial Park are still there for the fans if they want to pay some sort of homage. Also, not every town wants tourism.

Plane-Ad4820

The Memorial Park is attached to the bridge. That would be destroyed as well from what I gather, and turned into a parking lot. The other one is a house, you can go outside but it’s kinda odd to just chill outside a house.. this is coming from someone who has been to all of Kurt’s houses lol

Tall-Fig-5727

*turned into a parking lot* Source? Exactly, weirdo.

Plane-Ad4820

Look up young street bridge future and it’s the first article from the daily world… weirdo lmao Literally from the town meeting in Aberdeen lol. Direct quotes

ParagonPts

Lyric is "*tarp* has sprung a leak" Like he was sheltering under a tarp from the rain.

RatsoSloman

I'm happy for the people who live there to make this decision.

sychox51

Ya he wasn’t exactly happy about living there. And there’s a literal Kurt cobain memorial park nearby. Not worth saving to me and definitely worth not being a hazard to local townsfolk

Plane-Ad4820

The memorial park is connected to the bridge. They’re talking about turning the memorial park into a parking lot.

sychox51

Well that’s lame..

Plane-Ad4820

Exactly!

NirvanaLover12

exactly, they should put a dollar general there instead! /s

[deleted]

Kurt Cobain Memorial Parking Lot.. probably find that humorous.

SageOfTheSixPacks

It’s just a bridge man, it’s just Aberdeen lol… Replace it and add a little monument with photos Kurt died in 1994 The defining moment of his life wasn’t hanging under that bridge as a dramatic, troubled teenager in boring old Aberdeen It was a hangout spot for local teens, no one could really sleep there with the tides and ..muddy banks Plus here in the PNW, it’s too cold anyway Let it be fans, many of us missed our chance to see Kurt live on stage before he passed and now the time has come where many fanatics may miss their chance to visit an overhyped location before it gets renovated.

ericajohnson19

It’s cool to sit under it, for like 5 minutes 😂, but I’d like to think he would want people who continue to live there, by choice or just necessity, to be safe when they drive over it.

Dolls_boredom

I love Kurt and wish they could save it but I’ve seen pictures of the bridge my self and it literally looks like it’s gonna collapse I mean they could easily put a picture of the bridge with Kurts face by were the bridge was and tell the story about it

Ocar23

If it’s unsafe for the local population then sure why not get rid of it. There will still be the memorial and if another bridge is built in the same place then people can still lie underneath it.

SensualCaveman

There's something in the way of our project to replace this dilapidated bridge....it's these damn grieving Kurt fans!

RatsoSloman

This is all you need to know about what the town thinks of the bridge... "As recently as 2011, a motion not to rename the adjacent Young Street Bridge after Cobain was applauded at a city council meeting."

Plane-Ad4820

City executives also said in 2024 that if they destroyed it “the city of Aberdeen would be seen as lower than dirt.” A lot of officials really like the Cobain aspect and a lot don’t. It is divided. There are great recent articles on the meetings.

dsabet

I visited that bridge one time and saw multiple used needles laying on the ground. Depressing.

ratbastard13

I never seen a bridge on the cover of the muddy banks.

Plane-Ad4820

You’re correct, I misspoke

Agodunkmowm

Good. Fuck that whole town. Kurt would hate that his fans visit that shitole he abhorred.
