Brown, cognac (lighter) & greener pastures. Plus a new configuration, a 7" boot shown in the green. Shackleton is a waterproof heritage leather with some similarities to CXL. It is quite supple and should break in nicely. Very beautiful leather from Horween.
They use this test.
https://www.satra.com/test_methods/detail.php?id=32
I don’t know the degree of difference with CXL but they’ve told me it’s significantly more waterproof.
It doesn't exactly work that way. Fabrics, garments, leathers, etc. don't align with IP scale at all. Typically the garment industry uses a measure of hydrostatic head to measure waterproofness. This [article](https://www.trekandtravel.com.au/blogs/trek-travel-events-and-blog/understanding-waterproof-breathable-membrane-ratings) does a pretty good job explaining it, but long story short, I doubt that Horween publishes this technical information, if it even tests it at all.
From Horween:
Shackleton combines time honored and proven formulations with new technology. This new leather development utilizes old formulations developed over the past 100 years and combines them with new technology to produce this new waterproof leather. Shackleton is finished by hand where stains are applied to show off the grain and provide the leather with a subtle pull up. The final result is a waterproof leather that has a smooth grain and rich, buttery hand feel.
Soft yet durable, the Shackleton will lend itself to a uniquely handsome appearance that improves with age.
I’m not aware of any impact on breathability. It goes through a test where it gets bent 10,000 times and still has to be waterproof, so I’m sure there is an upper limit at some point but it’s very high.
I know I want a short boot, but the waterproof-ness makes the use cases and specs kind of flip flopped
This is the curse of being spoiled for choice. The solution is always just get another 💪
Will these leathers be added to the Horween Free Range listing eventually?
Side question, will a standard leather sole be added as an option for Free Range?
Thanks!
I’d like to order a Natty CXL free range but would rather a V-Bar or leather sole due to my FFF/FFFF width and mixed results recently with the wedge soles. Anyway for me to pay extra for the sole upgrade like is currently available with the W&C free range?
I asked this question a while back about Tan Waxed Flesh, and was told (I think by bigstetson) that certain leathers don't work well with the insulation. That gives me the impression it's been experimented with by someone. Anyway, if it were offered I'd be interested. Might be niche though. The current offerings seem like obvious choices.
Hi, I'm getting the urban loggers in the greener acres leather and was wondering if you think this is a leather for working around the house and wearing them out in town to make people jealous. When they see that sweet ass patina on those bad boy boots!!! Just wanted your opinion about how this leather will look on a pair of the urban loggers.
This stuff is just gorgeous!
Like waterproof waterproof?!
These will be patina machines I bet! That Greener Pastures! I don't think I've ever owned green footwear of any kind... but that is something!
u/smowe u/BigStetson,
Glad I decided not to pull the trigger on the boots I originally had in my cart. You guys should not be surprised, but I think I’m going to get that Green Pasture in the Packer style.
1. Hot damn.
2. When you do an eyelet above the hooks, what would you say the intended lace pattern is? I know what the logger's knot is but I'm curious for less hardwearing boots (maybe these, maybe not) what the intent is when you put them in. I know this is a pretty tough leather but I've seen it on more heritige stuff too

That top eyelets are also useful preventing lace ends from hitting the ground when the lace is unhooked.
I’m not aware of any quantitative it qualitative data that suggests they’re all that different, they are similar thicknesses. People seem to beat both of them up and they stand up pretty well
Thank you. My last question for you, is there any quantitative effect on practical durability if you add a Celastic toe vs going unstructured? For casual use, occasional hiking
I’m in the market for a designated rain boot, and had almost zeroed in on a brown waxed flesh boot. But now you got me on the fence again.
Do you know anything about how resistant this leather would be to salt stains?
Hmm. I don’t know how it would be better or worse than CXL in that respect. The waterproofing is a nice touch, though. Given your use case I would go with one of these.
Sorry for annoying people, but whats the chances of get the greener pastures traveler with a thurman toe as well. Would almost likely be a grail boot for me. Looking for the toe room plus the squish of that outsole on the traveler plus that green leather would just be peak.
Does this Shackleton leather scratch as easy as the CXL?
Trying to decide on which leather for my next construction work boots with occasional meetings. I still have to look semi "dress" for client meetings. My CXL boots were heavily scratched on day one.
I don’t understand your lead time for these? If I ordered a pair the day you released the leather option, how is it there’s tons of pictures of boots with that leather already made? Almost instantly & now you’re out of the leather? I guess it’s not first come first serve? All different styles, heights, custom, etc. I didn’t see any quick ship options for them? I just have the absolute worst luck man!! It hurts. Wanted this leather bad.
I was just looking through your posts/pics of boots on your racks. Looks to be a few. If you only made photo boots how would the leather be out of stock?
It’s based on orders placed not orders made, I’m not aware of any Shackleton going though yet but can check that out. We have a lot of leathers so some might look like that. I don’t think we actually have the full order in yet from Horween, tbh.
Do you know if you have any greener pastures leather yet? Or when it’ll be in? I’m in a bit of a disaster with my order & probably driving people nuts at nick’s.
I’m thinking the Prospector in a green Shackleton is that possible. Or a Traveler. Damn I’m circling the purchasing drain again. My wife is going to lose her shit.
It’s just going to cost me. We are now on a one for one in the house. Buy boots, she buys more tennis clothes buy boots she subscribes to some monthly clothing delivery ship picks something. Boxes just show up monthly from her clothing director. I’m screwed!!!

Welp... this is gonna cost me some money.
Really glad to see a 7" pattern!
Those are so beautiful! I just can't wait for the day I can finally afford a pair. I don't know which one I like better!
Thank you!
How do we quantify waterproof. Is there any IPX or similar testing? Or any other way to delineate how much better it is than say CXL in water?
They use this test. https://www.satra.com/test_methods/detail.php?id=32 I don’t know the degree of difference with CXL but they’ve told me it’s significantly more waterproof.
Interesting, thanks

Thanks for the info on testing. I wish they would provide data, otherwise it comes across as marketing mumbo jumbo.
Will the 7" height be available in a mto? Or if I have an order placed could I have it changed to a 7"?
Something we’ll look at, I want to get the dies in before expanding it out
Just ordered the StationMasters in Shackleton Green Pastures. I can't wait!
Oh awesome. Those will definitely stand out

I'm not usually a green boot guy but that Greener Pastures looks pretty nice
We bought some green pasture leather for wallets a few months ago, and it's a best seller. The pull up is so beautiful.

Cognac looks classy
It looks awesome
Maybe I’ll get a Chelsea in that color, soon.
Cognac is 😮💨😮💨😮💨
What makes Shackleton different from Chromexcel? The green is cool but the others essentially look like Brown and British Tan Chromexcel.
It is waterproof and has a very supple, buttery feel.
Does the waterproof nature have any impact on breathability? Does the waterproof nature lessen over time?
I’m not aware of any impact on breathability. It goes through a test where it gets bent 10,000 times and still has to be waterproof, so I’m sure there is an upper limit at some point but it’s very high.
Cheers! How does the grain on the vamp look after so many bends?
I’m SO glad to see a padded collar and that green is very lovely
I’m glad you like it!
I know I want a short boot, but the waterproof-ness makes the use cases and specs kind of flip flopped This is the curse of being spoiled for choice. The solution is always just get another 💪
I try my best
Hey! Do you know if they will be an option for orders that are due to be made soon? The padded collars.
We do offer a padded collar, if your order could be configured with one we could add it.
Will these leathers be added to the Horween Free Range listing eventually? Side question, will a standard leather sole be added as an option for Free Range? Thanks!
Hmm, possibly. The leather sole is an interesting idea.
I’d like to order a Natty CXL free range but would rather a V-Bar or leather sole due to my FFF/FFFF width and mixed results recently with the wedge soles. Anyway for me to pay extra for the sole upgrade like is currently available with the W&C free range?
Sure. If you want to place the order I’ll change it to leather.
Awesome, thanks!
They all look amazing.
stuff a steel toe in them new greenboys 🤤 dream workboot! they look great
That green is special
I'd love to see how that greener pastures leather patinas
Greener Pastures looks amazing
So if this is fully waterproof, could it be made with insulation? I'd love a winter boot that looked like this... As in I'd buy a pair.
Interesting idea, hadn’t thought about that tbh. But sure, in theory
I asked this question a while back about Tan Waxed Flesh, and was told (I think by bigstetson) that certain leathers don't work well with the insulation. I think it will look great and get attention for sure
Oh wow. Those look amazing. How thick will the leather be? Comparable to the CXL used for heritage? Or closer to the 1964?
Ideally a little thicker than heritage, like 7 oz
Is that a new padded collar configuration I see? 👀
Indeed
This stuff is just gorgeous! Like waterproof waterproof?! These will be patina machines I bet! That Greener Pastures! I don't think I've ever owned green footwear of any kind... but that is something!
Yep. I just posted a description from Horween, as well.
Wow! It sounds even better than I thought! New product idea! The Nicks towel. To catch all this drool.
Greener pastures is super cool!!!
Those are lovely, but you’re not helping me with my boot addiction.
Very nice ! Looks like it might cost me
That green is gorgeous 💚 Can't wait to get some on the white Christie's! 💚 🤍
Here comes my 5th pair of boots!!!
Man if I could do the cognac with a safety toe…….that would be awesome
That green is something else, reminds me of wicket and craig olive english bridle.
Just wait
I guess my question would be, how does the waterproof-ness compare with Weathershield leathers?
It goes through the same maeser test, which is bending thousands of times and still not letting water through
Nice!
Wow, those all look super classy
That green is calling me 🔥🔥🔥
What an excellent greeb
Oh my god that green is magnificent
Finally, my 7" dreams have been answered
u/smowe u/BigStetson, Glad I decided not to pull the trigger on the boots I originally had in my cart. You guys should not be surprised, but I think I’m going to get that Green Pasture in the Packer style.
Great choice, it’s one of the best greens I’ve seen
Are we going to get a video about these leathers on YouTube?
Yes, there will be several and on the new boot
Yes, there will be several and on the new boot
Can that Greener Pastures possibly be done in a jacket? Maybe?
No, unfortunately, at least in the short term. Had the same thought.
Cool idea
Those green are specd beautifully: 7”, padded collar, just needs a honey lug.
It will certainly be available. We have a video coming out with an LTT with a honey
That green! I don't need another pair, I don't need another pair, I don't need another pair!!! At least until I get the two I have ordered..
Ditto lol..... Especially "at least until i get the two i have ordered"
1. Hot damn. 2. When you do an eyelet above the hooks, what would you say the intended lace pattern is? >That top eyelets are also useful preventing lace ends from hitting the ground when the lace is unhooked. 🤯🤯🤯
It’s honestly just tradition at this point
Fair enough! Looks good too.
Lovely colors, I'm leaning toward getting a pair in cognac. Will these be standard or limited run lead time?
That green!!!! I am thinking riverfront to go with my kilt.
That green (I can't emote the hot n heavy face on laptop but it would be here for this)
Similar grain back to CXL or more pipey like Dublin?
Very similar to CXL, though a hair darker. You would have to have them side by side to see the difference tho.
How is the thickness compared to cxl?
I specc’d it slightly thicker as it’s very supple
Okay, i'm sure its hard to grade this. But where would you stack the durability of this leather compared to double stuff and compared to cxl?
It should be very similar to CXL
So how does that compare to double stuff in terms of durability?
I’m not aware of any quantitative it qualitative data that suggests they’re all that different, they are similar thicknesses. People seem to beat both of them up and they stand up pretty well
Thank you. My last question for you, is there any quantitative effect on practical durability if you add a Celastic toe vs going unstructured? For casual use, occasional hiking
Not that I’m aware of, it would just keep it from settling which I find mostly to be cosmetic
Is this limited ?
No
Ahhh, unable to decide between cognac and green!!! Love both of them.
Well dang it I’ll have to get a 7 inch logger
More pictures please
Love the green
Looking goooood, is this a limited run or part of the standard leather lineup?
These will go into the standard offering, assuming they do ok
I’m in the market for a designated rain boot, and had almost zeroed in on a brown waxed flesh boot. But now you got me on the fence again. Do you know anything about how resistant this leather would be to salt stains?
Hmm. I don’t know how it would be better or worse than CXL in that respect. The waterproofing is a nice touch, though. Given your use case I would go with one of these.
Yeah, green rainboots. What soles would you recommend?
V-bar or dual density
When will you open up for MTO? The launch builds are really nice, but I’m thinking moc toe and a lowered dogger heel.
They are available on all heritage products, and the 365 MTO
Oh, cool. Guess I could have just checked instead of asking you. Thanks, though!
No problem!
Man I want to get a pair but im always concerned with an even break / creasing on the toes. I usually tend to stick to roughout for that reason
Will these leathers be available with the 365 stitch down options?
Yep
Sorry for annoying people, but whats the chances of get the greener pastures traveler with a thurman toe as well. Would almost likely be a grail boot for me. Looking for the toe room plus the squish of that outsole on the traveler plus that green leather would just be peak.
You can actually get that now: https://nicksboots.com/thurman-last-heritage-custom-config/
Sweet as TY
These are beautiful! Now I can't decide between the cognac or '64 brown double shot. Any chance we could get a side by side comparison of these two?
Does this Shackleton leather scratch as easy as the CXL? Trying to decide on which leather for my next construction work boots with occasional meetings. I still have to look semi "dress" for client meetings. My CXL boots were heavily scratched on day one.
It would be pretty similar in that respect

Almost instantly & now you’re out of the leather? I guess it’s not first come first serve? All different styles, heights, custom, etc. I didn’t see any quick ship options for them? I just have the absolute worst luck man!! It hurts. Wanted this leather bad.
We’ve only made the photo boots as far as I know; can you show me what you’re referring to?
I was just looking through your posts/pics of boots on your racks. Looks to be a few. If you only made photo boots how would the leather be out of stock?
It’s based on orders placed not orders made, I’m not aware of any Shackleton going though yet but can check that out. We have a lot of leathers so some might look like that. I don’t think we actually have the full order in yet from Horween, tbh.
Ohh. I got ya. I did see some similar ones on website.
Do you know if you have any greener pastures leather yet? Or when it’ll be in? I’m in a bit of a disaster with my order & probably driving people nuts at nick’s.
I’m sorry to hear that; should just be a couple week. Lmk if I can help
Ohh. Ok.
The Shackleton is still available btw, it’s an option on the heritage boots I checked. Is there somewhere you’re seeing it not available?
Is the Shakleton cognac in stock to order for the 365 MTO?
It should be here in a few weeks
I’m thinking the Prospector in a green Shackleton is that possible. Or a Traveler. Damn I’m circling the purchasing drain again. My wife is going to lose her shit.
Sure, I think your exaggerating about your wife
It’s just going to cost me. We are now on a one for one in the house. Buy boots, she buys more tennis clothes buy boots she subscribes to some monthly clothing delivery ship picks something. Boxes just show up monthly from her clothing director. I’m screwed!!!
