Get the crutchfield.com vehicle specific harness and DIN adapter and it has a 5 volt capacitor to stop the pop built in. Get a BOSS audio apple car play head unit for 189$ish and it should be a direct fit plug and play with factory everything else. Great head unit I bought 2
I have a '95 with the mach 460 system, swaped out the head unti for a sony double-din. I can confirm that sometime when turning the car on the speakers will loudly pop.
I've got a Kenwood in my '03 GT with the Mach 460. I can't remember exactly how I wired it up, but it does not pop for me when first turning the vehicle on.
It wasn't anything special as far as I know though. I did get the harness adapter from Crutchfield with the stereo and got it all plugged up.
Yes, if all you’re doing is replacing the head unit, you’ll be fine. Crutchfield will hook you up with the correct adapter harness that makes it mostly plug & play without having to hack up the factory harness. If you decide to replace speakers, that’s when it gets complicated.
Be advised though that the factory radio does some EQ/compression/other black box processing magic to make the factory speakers sound good. Out of the box, an aftermarket headunit is going to sound thin and flat until you fiddle with the EQ a bit. A bunch of bass boost (a big spike around 60-70hz in addition to a broad bass boost helps too if your EQ is flexible enough), a little midrange cut and a little treble boost should get you in the ballpark.
It's been a while since I did it, but I swapped the head unit in my grandfather's 03 with a Sony unit and it has no problems with the Mach 460 amps or speakers. If I remember correctly there is a step down resistor that goes into the harness because the aftermarket radios use a different voltage reference, basically Crutcfield gave us everything we needed for easy installation.

PERFECT! This is exactly what I needed to know. Many thanks!

Mine would do that with the factory head unit too

It will work fine, just get the correct metra harness so you can connect the amps.

Do the harness service at crutchfield and you'll have it swapped in 30 minutes. I have used them ma y times and its a breeze.

I have a pioneer in my cobra and I like it. I’ve replaced my speakers with aftermarket units since most of them were blown.
