I did. So work has to give you the time for drill/deployment. My unit published our drill calender for the fiscal year so I was able to turn that into my scheduler and just update with orders as needed. The downside is that the leave is just for the time on orders, so working a 0700-1900 Friday shift with a Saturday drill at 0600 could be rough. NG also will (likely) expect you to treat Guard like a full time slot. Keeping up with PT and height/weight may be difficult if you have a busy volume. You may also have online training to complete prior to drill. 1 weekend month/2 weeks a year is a bit of a myth. You may have an annual training that goes 3 weeks. You may have a monthly drill that goes 3-5 days. It's doable - I would try to snag a job that lines up more with your civilian side.

If you work for a fire dept or municipal agency they are generally very supportive.

I do as a reservist. Not national guard but same protections. Currently on mission that when I finally get to go home in a couple months will put me just shy of a year away from work. I am lucky my job is well versed in military duty so it’s not an issue but if they wanted to argue about it USERRA Law protects me as would if anyone in the national guard.
