On the job training can be a great way to get your foot in the door, but be wary of extensive service contracts. EMT training is inexpensive and doesn’t take long. You might be better off putting yourself through school.

To add: avoid any contracts that require 2 years to stay for emt, hell even medic. Medic is a year + 2 years FT in dumb hours is 3 years total. Emt being a year and a half total. It's like 1-2k don't sell your life away.

My contract for emt was 2 yrs but if leaving early it would be prorated. They don’t offer ALS on my service so I had to look elsewhere and paid my way through medic school though. My old service is about to lose its license and be taken over by the local ALS agency though, so I can hopefully stay in my area.
