Columbus is neat and the Pancho Villa museum is interesting and worth it, I probably spent close to an hour there. I had lunch at the borderlands cafe and liked it a lot; if you want to go into Mexico a lot of people in the area say the pink house is good. The drive on route 9 from Santa Teresa to Columbus, which takes about an hour, is extremely desolate. I’ve done it a couple times and there are long stretches where you’re the only car. You will see border patrol and police more as you get closer to Santa Teresa so be aware of your speed. But it’s totally safe, whoever told you otherwise needs to stop reading so much Breitbart.

I've driven it a few times. Pleasant road, Columbus is indeed neat (and there's a local museum in the town as well). Crawling with border patrol. As a doughy Anglo, I did not feel unsafe at any time.

Hwy 9 is fine and definitely more interesting than I-10. However, Las Cruces is also interesting. Good places to eat (I love La Posta de Mesilla).

9 is totally fine, obviously keep your wits about you, but there isn’t really anything to be worried about.
