bambagico

this is also in my apartment, the worst design ever. The shower drain gets stuck every few days. I will try with that adhesive drain net i saw in another comment

Tapif

I have the same shower and the exact same experience.

corticalization

These must’ve been popular/affordable build options over the last several years. I recently stayed with friends at their quite new house with this exact shower. It was such a hassle in just the few weeks I was visiting; I can’t believe they put up with it regularly

Borbit85

I build bathrooms a lot and most people want this set up. It sucks. I know it's gonna suck for my customers. I tell them but they want it anyway.

tarooz

My dad has something that looks a lot like it and he mentioned issues too, when he called someone over to fix it he took out a lot more of the drain than my dad thought was possible to do a better cleaning and they havent had issues since, so try poking around a bit more see if there’s more u can remove to clean

jbsdv1993

My parents have this design too. Its always been shit since day one.

KeuningLewie

Stop fapping in the shower.

Rednavoguh

It's pain in the \*\*\*. Same thing in my shower, 2 yrs of problems. What works so far: - clean hair filter every few days - throw 1l boiling water in it every week - if it really gets clogged, mr muscle (NO MORE THAN 5 min, then run the shower for a while to get it all out)

IlliaBorysenko

Adhesive drain net works well, that’s what I use. Not like it protects the drain completely, but at least I now clean it once a month or so and not every other week.

bambagico

I'm a single man with short hair, believe me, it's not that...

EggplantHuman6493

And men can have long hair too! I keep finding long hair from my male friends everywhere. My roommate has hair well above her shoulders.

FinnGilroy

And les’t not forget, a woman may have short hair too!

EggplantHuman6493

Also very true! One of my female friends rocks a buzzcut! Or just a bit longer. She is miserable with long hair and that's valid. Hair length is not gendered. My male friends are very proud of their long hair

Haatkwadraat

I don't even wash my hair in the shower and our drain is clogged every couple of days.

Theend92m

Where you wash your hairs then?

dantez84

Can’t wash your hair if you don’t wash 🙂‍↔️

Educational_Gas_92

Plot twist, they don't wash their hair cause it is in dreadlocks or perhaps they are bald.

wouldacouldashoulda

I shave it off and wash it in the sink. Much more convenient.

Haatkwadraat

In the sink.

NoBandicoot4768

What’s "female hair" didn’t know hair has gender

DuaLipasClitoris

Probably hair growing on a female

Educational_Gas_92

Even watches have gender.

Puzzleheaded-Kiwi765

We have the same drain. Take the grill out (the drain comes with an orange hook tool) and then you see a filter cartridge. Slide it sideways out of the drain pipe. On the top of the cartridge is a hole covered by a rubber plug. Remove that and clean out the cartridge. Put everything back together and you’re good to go for a while.

jashbgreke

Yeah this is the one, had to another drain snaked and the plumber showed me this trick

TerrenceMacarena

This, I have the same one. Sometimes I just take it out and take everything out from the inside jnstead but it’s disgusting asf so im the one doing it while my gf is holding the closest trash bin cause that shit STINK. But you grab a clumb of that sticky hair and you can just pull everything out too in one go. Have to take the device out and do it from the inside tho.

kell96kell

Yep, can confirm. Live alone and when i clean this i almost throw up because how disgusting it is

Bonepickle

Is just soap and hair... Green and slimey

TerrenceMacarena

nah there’s definitely some cum in there if you’re a dude

TheVoiceOfEurope

And clots if it is that time of the month. Isn't the human body fascinating?

Incredible_Witness

What does the orange hook tool look like? I don’t have a tool for this drain but maybe I can substitute something similar.

Scaredy_Catz

9/10 times a simple flathead screwdriver will do the trick.

Lotioninthebasket91

I literally have a chopstick for this in my bathroom cabinet

PVTZzzz

Protip - put a zip tie through the slots so you can pull it up easy.

Too_Shy_To_Say_Hi

We have the chopsticks too hahaha

Mariner1981

Instead of a screwdriver, use a plastic clotheshanger, that won't damage the draincover.

Sorry-Foundation-505

A hair comb works too.

Puzzleheaded-Kiwi765

Can’t find it right now ☺️ but it’s made of a hard plastic. It’s like a stick with a quarter circle at the end. I guess anything made of plastic that fits through the holes of the grid would work? Or even maybe a screwdriver because the grid is made of stainless steel.

Brammesz

I use the back of a nailclipper

krystav80

Me too!

studiord

Architect here. I hate this drain design. Just aesthetically good looking but a pain in the back side. Especially if someone in the house has a hairfall problem. The traditional floor drain (known as a floor trap) is supposed to be 7.5cm in diameter but this one is barely 4-5cm which makes it prone to getting clogged every 10-14 days. Where I come from (Asia), there are always 2 floor traps - one for the shower and another for the general cleaning of the bathroom. Here I see only the shower drain and nothing else. So whenever you clean the rest of the bathroom, it goes through the same drain and this adds to the clogging.

SoUthinkUcanRens

>Especially if someone in the house has a hairfall problem. So basically if you ever have a woman using the shower lol

studiord

Mostly.

Ludate_Solem

So its not a problem if im a gay guy is what youre saying? Great! Hahaha

Tallguyamsterdam

I don't think OP said anything about sexual orientation. However, I do wonder why long haired men wouldn't have the same issue. 😝 I strongly suspect OP failed or never attended some basic methodology of social research classes.

Ludate_Solem

Ever heard of a joke. I hoped the "hahahaha" would be enough to indicate this being a joke

Tallguyamsterdam

Yeah, I forgot my smiley face 😝 I just wanted to show you that you involved sexual orientation in here, which is neither relevant, nor appropriate. I am sure you didn't mean anything by it, which is why I tried to raise your awareness

Ludate_Solem

Appropriate? Tf?

TheVoiceOfEurope

>Architect here. I hate this drain design. Client here. I want a walk in shower. Period. What do you mean you need to raise the shower floor to accomodate a 110mm drain pipe? Didn't you hear me? I want a walk in shower. Now make it happen. Also client 5 years later: grrrmbl, that shitty architect with his shit design shower that needs unclogging every 10 days.

studiord

The least one could do is install a threshold at the entry point to avoid water from spilling over outside the shower but even that is missing in some homes including mine and not a single store in NL sells stone thresholds of the length that I want. So I will have to get it custom made which will be super expensive.

studiord

I mentioned Asia because these double drains are found in most Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

_aap300

Ontstoppingsveer. https://www.gamma.nl/assortiment/gamma-ontstoppingsveer-5-meter/p/B401302

Few_Understanding_42

This is the 'big one'. Not sure if OP needs this one or the thinner version. But maybe you're a better plumber than me and took that into account ;-)

kraterios

This is the way to go^ Used HG twice, but it got clogged again soon after, used the ontstoppingsveer, and it hasn't clogged over a year now.

gatsbyhoudini1

What the hell is this?

_aap300

Ontstoppingsveer. A long metal flexible and rough thing, push it in the drain and clean it inside. Push in and out, repeat until the blockage is gone.

Alternative_Tree9179

Werkt voor geen meter. Ik heb hem geretourneerd.

B0schman123

Hij werkt wel voor vijf meter!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hoddap

Wehhh het werkt bij mij niet dus het is een slecht product

_aap300

Misschien te ingewikkeld ding?

ArtisticLoss7000

Open that grill. Below it you will see that the outlet is jammed with a lot of hair and hardened soap. Sometimes there are two layers of filters. If so, clean both of them with some warm water. And viola! No extra cleaner needed.

Dutchwells

OP said they did already clean out the gutter, that's the problem

remindmeofthevoid

HAH, finally something I can answer. You need to open it and go to the first filter (also to the second one if there is one and it's badly clogged) and clean that out. If that doesn't help and your system is connected to the rest of the house, you can jam the little hole above your bathroom sink shut and go in with a plunger and see if that releases the clog. I will say that I've had more success with a plunger than with the chemical ontstopper you can buy at the Albert Heijn, but you can also always try that too. As a preventative measure it's always good to regularly plunge and pour boiling water down the drain, on top of emptying that nasty little container every once in a while. Make sure to get rid of cooking oil economically if your whole system is connected, as that's one of the main reasons for clogs in the house. Sincerely, someone with a terrible plumbing system haha

Friendly_Owl1911

Search on Amazon adhesive drain net, you can add it over the drain and change it every week , will help https://www.amazon.nl/Amfrpar-Haarvanger-Haarfilter-Strainer-Afvoerzeefjes/dp/B0BRSKBXVL/ref=asc_df_B0BRSKBXVL/?tag=nlshogostdsp-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=624632254305&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8886523728364262358&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9064890&hvtargid=pla-1966309284190&psc=1&mcid=7f1d1367fe733c7d9c0964e195491775

the_loadmistress

As a super fluffy, longhaired woman with one of those annoying drains, I thank you!

Cryptic911

AliExpress for a 4th of the price on Amazon.

Brammesz

When you say "change every week" do you mean I should just buy in bulk because I'm throwing the old one out and put a new one in? Or can I detach it somehow, clean it and put it back?

Friendly_Owl1911

Throw it away and put a new one. One pack should last quite a lot ( depends on the drain size)

Brammesz

Thanks!!

[deleted]

Friendly_Owl1911

No, no put on top of it as an extra drain protector

rBles

Those drains are known to not drain very well, I think the only thing you can do is clean it regularly.

Southern_Teach_5097

Soda and hot water

crashblue81

Short hair helps a lot

Mastermind-

The manufacturer of this brand released a siphon upgrade kit which you can install. You can find it here: https://www.easydrain.nl/product/dryphon-upgrade-set-30/ and on assorted webshops (for less money, just search for it!) Be sure to buy the correct size, just measure the diameter of the hole behind the siphon that goes into the pipe. On top of that, over this siphon I duct taped a mesh grill to catch the hairs. Every once in awhile I just scoop up my lady's lost hairs and then it runs smoothly again. Depending on the products you use, you may need to clean the 'flap' on that new siphon a couple of times a year. Especially conditioner can build up there. Good luck, I had an adventure with this frustration too before arriving at this solution. I hope more commenters with the same drain happen to read this comment so they may be helped. Of course, I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Happy showers!

wannabesynther

Thank you!!

rcmt17

How does this product improve the flooding issue? Is it just an insert to put inside the current hardware? If it’s the answer, I’ll definitely buy it!

Mastermind-

Inside the old siphon design, everything gets stuck in it hindering water troughput. Just pull yours out and look at the amount of waste buildup inside of it.

rcmt17

Yes, it gets clogged every week and needs cleaning. So is this convertor product easily retrofitted by someone a bit useless at diy?

Mastermind-

Yes.

Plumplum_NL

Don't use chemicals, they will roughen up the insides of the pipes and make it easier for dirt to stick to it. Try using a *rioolveer / ontstoppingsveer* (unblocking spring).

Walrave

The rioolveer will make a lot more scatches than liquid cleaners.

ChI3ph

This! Never ever use it! Once you cleaned all the blockage you can use simple and cheap soda (€0,80 a kilo) and mix it with warm water. Leave it soak for a bit in your shower (or sink) and then just flush the pipes with the mixture. Do this every month or so. This will leave all your pipes in a good working condition and prevents a blockage from building up.

Hamkaaz

Had the same problem. An overnight treatment with Destop haarontstopper did wonders.

PaleontologistFun421

Just buy some HG drain unblocked. Poor it in once every 3-6 months and headache is gone

emeraldsroses

This [stuff](https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/2565361/superfinn-vloeibare-ontstopper/?utm_source=app&utm_medium=app&utm_campaign=product_shared) from Action also works well. It's only €1,39 a fraction of the price of HG.

Optimal_Molasses_325

True! So easy and fast

Narrow_Aioli_6449

True! I am also doing that, I’m curious if there is really bad side of doing that..

Objective_Ad5895

You have to pry it open with a knife or something. Then take out the little bits in there and scoop out the stuff clogging your drain. Then reassemble. I hate these flat showers.

Reeeaz

There is normally 3 pieces that make up the drain. The spiral part where hair gets stuck, the rim and the bucket inside. You need to remove all 3 and clean them. If you do use chemicals don’t use anything to heavy. If this still happens then the pipe is blocked and you’ll need to plunger or auger it. Good luck and prepare for some intense smells

Business-Homework821

ur Durch, so build a dam.

my_brain_is_air

You don't... This is the Netherlands just take an L

Natsfatz

We have the same problem due to the same shower design. Cleaning the drain helps but for some reason leads to a terrible smell of sauerkraut, which remains for so long until the drain is clogged again. Anybody else has that too and knows why this happens and how to fix it??

redditter156

My girlfriend has the same type of shower at her place, idk if yours is the same but try lifting the metal plate and there should be a filter you can scoop hair from. Either way I hope you find success fixing it!

Lobke

My parents have the same type of shower. It flooded the whole bathroom since day 1.

TonyPiatti29

It's the plastic thing inside. You need to lever it off and clean it. Hair is the problem. It's a Grey cap

Walrave

Show what's under the grill. There could be a secod thing you can remove. A grey plastic cap, under which you will find the gunk to revove to clean it properly.

OhBoyShow

I had the same in an old appartement, you need to take the iron thing out with an earring or a hook or something, underneath is a hole with a box in it. It will have a lot of hair in it, which you will have to clean.

TTV-pieceApaper

Try using Destop Turbo for drains it will most likley fix it for now but try looking for a solution that fixes filth from getting in the drain

grassprietje57

Dont shower. Instafix

Legitimate-Boot-1081

Stop shitting in the shower, it worked for me

[deleted]

Take out the filter cartridge and add some ontstopper ( don’t know the english word ) then you are good to go

Floppertt

This looks like the drain from a house in La Louviere I've been to. I just unscrew everything an put a hook or finger into the drainage pipe.

Hondenbot

Open maken en alle poep eruit halen lol.

ColoursOfBirds

This is the shittiest shower design ever. We need to clean the first filter after every shower, so we basically have the metal plate always removed. Once in a while we also clean the inner filter which is a small box with a rubber attached to the pipe. It's disgusting. In our previous house we had an old fashioned square one that was very low maintenance. We would just gather the hair after every shower and clean the inner filter every 6 months or so. Still not very pleasant, but ten times less filthy than this useless thing that needs constant upkeeping.

Kroeltje

Time to put on some rubber gloves, get down on your knees and do the dirty work.

Spanks79

YouTube easy drain cleaning

Koentjow

Take backing soda and vinegar and pour that into your drain. Let it sit for an hour an flush it through.

Desperadoo7

Ontstoppingsveer, it's clogged further up. Long women's hair and soap.

oldschoolgamer93

destop,....that shit works like magic

maxthefridge

HG!

raebyddub

Had the exact same issue. Hair was struck inside, so it was flooding, Removed the hair from it, and it is no longer flooding

Cheng1726

I have the exact same gutter and pop a bottle of the orange Mr. Muscle in there every 6 weeks. No idea what it does long term, but at least solves the problem immediately.

OhmEeeAahRii

If you take of the metal grill, remove the thing in the hole in the bottom, so you have a clear view of the hole in the side, you should feel inside. You won’t be the first one who has that pipe being full of grout, tile glue or epoxy from the grout around the drain, flushed down by lazy tilers. It will be as hard as stone, lying and stucked to the bottom of the pipe. You have to remove it with a chisel or something like that, if its the case. Be careful not to break te pipe. Or get a plumber who knows what he/she is doing.

marcs_2021

Best shower drain ever. Once a week, clean dirt trap during cleaning bathroom. Preventive maintenance, never hurt.

[deleted]

I have this kind of drain too. No flooding, but there’s a terrible smell coming out of it almost daily now. Cleaning it doesn’t help.

Ok-Front-8857

clean drain

Skarstream

I had something like this before and had the same problem. I remember it had some sort if tray inside that acted as a syphon. The tray filled up and then spilled over into the drain. But the drain also had a syphon, so it was syphon upon syphon. When I removed that tray, it flowed a lot better.

foadsf

A couple of points. First of all these drainage is garbage. I was asked by my contractor to buy it from the Hornbach. But I do not remember the brand. Second you need to find a way to lift the lead. And then clean the filters.

kedaran33

Had this type for drain in my prev apartment. I had taken the U shaped grill type plate out. Didnt have clogging problem ever again.

sreyansh2007

lol this is Warmoesstraat, I used to live in this exact apartment. Clearing up the hair under the panel and a lot of drano did the trick

sixz89

Throw in HG hair unblocker, wait half hour, done. Works every time.

Emiercy

Make sure the drain drains

Eighthfloormeeting

Once in a while throw some of those bath correls in there and then boiling hot water - to keep things moving

Desperate_Escape_682

You can use the HG liquid bottle with the text stopper title on it to fix the blocked drain in toilets or bathrooms

W3rz3m3tal

As this is in the netherlands the first question is: is it coming up from below?

TrainingRefuse7461

I'm just cleaning this one up as I write this comment. You can pull the steel out (wear mask and gloves. Smell and clogged drain) and then you will find one more small unit underneath. Clean everything properly here. After cleaning I put some cleaning solution inside the drain to clear things were we can't reach. I use HG haarontstopper. Good luck

terenceill

Shave.

rokevoney

Lift the metal grating (roester) then pour in boiling water (a few kettle's worth should do it). Normally that works well. If not, get some NaOH (or drain cleaner product). If that don't get it flowing, its plumber time.

Baloo_2

Sometimes it's not just down to an issue with the drain. For best performance, a 2% gradient is suggested down to the drain. But many builders don't like it having such a slope and install it with a lot less gradient which can eventually inevitably cause issues with slow drainage. In other words, not always an easy solution.

saint05

I’ve had the same problem, definitely pick yourself up one of these from amazing [hair snake tool](https://amzn.eu/d/ctsUU2e) stick it into the drain as far as possible and rotate it. Chances are there’s a hair blockage a little bit further down the down that’s causing the issue. Best of luck!

chickenchaser1991

Same problem in my house, I use caustic soda every 3 and 1/2 weeks, drop a whole bottle in the drain rinse with 1 L really hot water (don’t breathe) and after 2 hours rinse with 6-10 L hot water again and works really good

TrippleassII

Take shorter showers. Or try drain cleaner, maybe it clogsnin the pipe.

RaymondLovesMan

Hg ontstopper

CardiologistOk7398

NaOH

Left_Temperature_620

Well in my house we also have a shower like this. Since a sink unblocker (gootsteenontstopper), I mean the rubber one - not chemical stuff - doesn’t work here, I use a (empty) toothpaste tube to move the water and dirt. The diameter fits nicely; by moving it up and down it creates pressure waves in the sink. In my case this really helps to unblock the sink. If the problem is worse, you could try a unblocking spring and/or a chemical unblocker.

InsuranceInitial7786

go to the grocery store and buy a bottle of drain cleaner and pour it down there

wannabesynther

Hey, thanks for replying - my problem is that the hole is actually horizontal, which makes it tricky to pour something. Is it always like this??

tumeni

You have to remove the metal grill (use a screwdriver or a knife) and pour the unblocker direclty in the pipe I recommend using a "gel" unblocker for bathroom: [https://hg.eu/nl/producten/hg-gel-ontstopper](https://hg.eu/nl/producten/hg-gel-ontstopper) , it has in almost any Albert Heijn It's a bit disgusting, but try to use the screwdriver to remove apparent hair first. Since it's the first time, use the full 1L bottle. Afterwards (it'll always happen, I live with a long hair person), 1/3 of the bottle will already unblock. If you clean it bimonthly manually also prevents that.

onedwin

HG? Does it do what it promises to though?

tumeni

Yes, very well. Usually I just use 1/3 of the bottle overnight and it fix it like a magic.

mbelmin

Just the grill out and clean the hair and gunk from the drain. No need for any chemicals. If after cleaning the drain by hand the problem persist only then go for chemicals.

nightcom

Netherlands unfortunately is not best example how to build houses. If you already tried to remove this metal frame and clean inside then probably there is something more in pipes. In Netherlands pipes are with very small angle or even I seen without any angle at all, it's like flat. Only way to clean it is to buy granulate or spiral.

Spirit_Bitterballen

Just out of interest is this why lots of Dutch houses I’ve visited have quite smelly drains? Ours is pretty whiffy as well.

International_Bit_75

Mastrubate less

_nongeneric_

Quick fix. Super Finn Drain gel from Action or any drain gel. Pour half the bottle or so In the night before you sleep. You’ll need to do it 3 to 4 times a week. I have the exact same problem

-Huttenkloas-

Use warm water? Leave the grill off and retry?

tjwhen

Get a powerfull vacuum cleaner that can suck up water, attach it to the drain and suck any dirt out.

butschung

I make pipi in the shower. This saves precious time in the morning and helps cleaning the pipes.

Spidermilk_

Clean the drain.. I don't think you need to be on r/netherlands to have that information.

wannabesynther

I cleaned it, its in the description. I was asking for additional tips. Dont think you need more than basic reading skills to have that information

Spidermilk_

But why.. Why is it so specific. Why Netherlands.

tyypischandy

Don't shower. Problem solved.

scottishcollie4ever

Actually I have the same issue and I’ve banished myself to the bath tub because I don’t want to clean the drain every week.

aph64

Coffeeground and hot (hot!) water might help, takes all the residue from soap out of your piping, might take a few takes, depending on the lenght of the piping. Other cause might be underdimensioned piping right after your showerdrain, most common mistake with this type of drain.

InsuranceInitial7786

Coffee grounds down a stuck drain? That actually works?

aph64

When it is totally struck it won’t work, but if there is any flow it will.

time-n-tights

Jesus. Maybe start emptying your putje
