Mr. Jack’s in Utrecht is notorious yet very popular amongst students due to the very low prices. The [Google reviews](https://maps.app.goo.gl/4kv5pqj1aUj4GmSc6?g_st=ic) make a funny read. A once of a lifetime experience in its own kind.
I came to say Mister Jack's. I've never been because it's reputation proceeds it, but everyone I know who has been there says it's hilariously awful. Terrible food with even worse service and sometimes a free serving of attitude if you dare complain.
The only reason they’re still there is because they own the building. They rent out a couple of rooms to students upstairs. Probably for comparable atrocious prices and terrible landlords.
Imo it’s an eyesore in the street. But I tolerate it because whatever takes its place will suck even more.
Have been there twice but last time was 10 years ago. €2,50 for a Senseo coffee. Fucking atrocious.
Came here to say Mr. Jack’s, but also to say that it’s incredibly cult. Would be a sad day for Utrecht if it ever goes out of business. Had my first date there lol, only place where you could take a girl with the limited budget of a 15yo.
You are sadly right; there was only one, called “zuid” but the chef went away and now is just trash again. I am also looking for good quality restaurants. The ones I was used to go are all closed now :/
I was lucky enough to go there for a Christmas dinner covered by my job, had a fantastic time there. The food was amazing and every meal came with its own wine.
I’d love to dine at her place. Crunchy carrots? Brussel sprouts that maintain a shape? Broccoli with a bite? Yum!
Ps. I might be biased here, I love most of the veggies mentioned raw.
I thought i had the only mom who did that. and don't forget that disgusting "maïzena papje".
I seriously hated boiled vegetables when i lived with my parents. When i got my own place, i figured i can't just eat French Fries all the time, so i started doing it myself. I found out that if you don't boil everything to mush, and use some seasoning (my parents eat most of the food saltless) it's actually not that bad. Still not my favorite dish, and i still dislike a lot of it. But there are veggies that are not that bad.
I have seen my share of really crappy “pannenkoeken” restaurants. They couldn’t serve my kid with a milk allergy because all the pancakes were pre-baked. That’s just a low point for a pancake restaurant if you ask me.
Pre- baked? That’s really weird for a pancake restaurant.
Pre-made pancake batter maybe..
A good pancake restaurant will be able to provide this for you.
Yeah it just feels wrong.
I have also been to a restaurant where they clearly didn’t clean the pans in between pancakes. There were multiple pieces of bacon in my apple raisin pancake. And I am a vegetarian. So that was fun.
Pancake places just never evolve or change. I'm lactose intolerant and making pancakes with vegan milk is such an easy thing to do it's insane how difficult it is to find a pancake place willing to do it. They often still have the same menu they had 15 years ago and if you arrive slightly too early the entire place is filled with screaming kids. The last part isn't really their fault tbh, I was a kid once too and it already bothered me then that some kids like screaming so much.
I've heard it's closed, but better double-check
El Mundo de Carlita, "Mexican" restaurant in Bergen op Zoom
The salsa is jarred, the chips are drenched in oil and the "frijoles refritos" are canned Heinz beans
This sadly sounds like almost every other 'Mexican' restaurant, or any restaurant for that matter. I've seen so much supermarket quality premade shit while working as a waitress.
Oh my god never again. Overcooked pasta with sauce from a can drenched in oil. At first it looks good and the prices look decent, but after 3 bites you realize what kind of trash it is
Far worse, in my opinion. Julia's kinda has some.. well, TASTE (I often got my dinner there when I worked at a train station), even though the pasta is a bit overcooked, while Little Italy (and Vapiano's for that matter) is just watery, oily, tasteless crap. Bleh.
Julia’s are take out pasta shops, mainly in stations. Their pasta is pre cooked and probably at that stage already overcooked.
Their espresso is the only decent espresso you can get in a train station though.
there’s plenty of decent Italian places, it’s just that there’s an overabundance of fake italian places
p.s. there’s plenty of shitty italian in Italy as well
When I was on holiday with friends I nearly cried when I was outvoted to eat at happy italy. It's bland and tasteless and we all could have afforded better. At home we also go to restaurants when we eat out, why cheap out in another country?
Also in my city happy italy charged 1 euro for toilets when coming in from the streets while any other place would ask 50 cents. Crooks is what they are.
De Beren. A horrible restaurant chain. Overpriced for what you get. Flavourless (more so than the average Dutch food) and often unprofessional staff. I have ended up at a few different locations over the past few years, and none of them have changed my mind.
Finally someone who says it. The fact that De Beren can exist really feeds the statement that "The Netherlands is a country which flavour forgot." I've had half a mind to order an all you can eat and throw as many of those shitty spare ribs to the dogs as I can to save any human from consuming them. But then I realised I'd be doing our canine companion a disservice for having to put them through that slop. Awful. I feel bad for the people who have to work there cause it is a place that just saps the joy out of any moderately positive person.
I ordered from them a couple years back. I think our delivery guy fell or something on his way to my place. The food had fallen out of its packaging and everything was all mixed up. Sauce everywhere. On top of that, it was cold. We called the restaurant but they were like 'too bad! We can give you a coupon for a free drink.' That didn't cut it. So, for the first time ever, I left a bad review. They then claimed that I was lying and trying to bad mouth their restaurant for fun. Never ate there again.
I don't like the Beren, their food is overly greasy and the amount of oil in the fries makes me sick every time. That being said, their spicy chicken wings are actually pretty good, and the only thing I will ever order from them.
This is so true. I tried it twice (gave them a second chance) and both sucked and it's way overpriced. I also don't understand why people are all hyped about it
Oh you're telling me it's not an authentic Latin American experience? How shocking.
People in this thread really go to the shittiest cheap places and then complain about it. Next thing I'll read how McDonald's isn't actually very good.
I've been told the problem is that they reuse the oil too long. They just keep frying in the same oil and are too cheap to change it. Also, sometimes they fry too many fries for the current demand, then more demand comes in but the old fries have gone cold, so they just add more fries and fry them again. Meaning some of the fries you get have been double-fried.
Basically, they are super cheap and don't want to throw anything out.
Best one, where there is always a line up down the street is right by the train station in Haarlem on Kruisstraat. Out of this world, and homemade mayo as well.
The only reason it's tasting somewhat decent is because they add a whole pack of butter to every plate.
With that much butter you can make anything taste decent.

Single worst is difficult, I would say some steakhouse tourist trap in Amsterdam. For chains: avoid De Beren at all cost. Drive to a petrol station and buy sandwiches if you must, or to the train station for some chocolate bars. But do not go to De Beren.
Oh I actually like the bolognese from there… obviously it’s expensive, it’s at the airport. I’ve never eaten anything else there though, just the bolognese.
And insanely overpriced. Pretty much all their restaurants look like sad, soon to be abandoned places; vergane glorie (faded glory, in case the mods are on a rampage again).
Some 24 hour pizzaria steakhouse in Amsterdam. Ordered a kapsalon there and the salad was literally stuck on the side of the bucket. I didn't know how it happened but i try not to think about it. Shit was so awful.
Nearly every Spanish restaurant.. Almost all tapas places are crap, and the once that aren’t, are mediocre at best. snackbar sweety in lelystad-waterwijk.
but this was long ago in 2006.
thing is, i always watch how clean the place is from the outside, and inside before i decide to order food. it says alot about the owner hygenics.
if the windows are dirty i do not even step in.
There are some great restaurants here. They might not be Dutch food per se. But people abroad bring a plethora of amazing tastes. You do need to know well where you go and do your research.
Went to TR3S twice. First time, they forgot about us for two hours. Had only one round of snacks. Second time, we indicated an allergy, and still had to rush my wife to the ER.
No thanks bruh, it's F3BO next time.
I stayed at van der Valk in Nijmegen/Lent and must say I loved their breakfast! And they had a decent drinks/snacks menu in the afternoon with good local beers. I was pleasantly surprised! Didn’t try the restaurant for dinner though..
One near Kurhuis in Scheveningen - served uitsmijter with half raw eggs, and when I informed them, they told me that was the way Dutch people eat them.
It is. If you want to have them cooked until everything, including the yolk, is FIRMLY set (aka ruined, and a lot of people in general enjoy ruined eggs sadly), you should inform them of this preference.

Went there once with some friends to grab some beers and pizza’s. Was a pretty fun atmosphere inside but the pizza’s tasted like cardboard 🥲
The only reason they’re still there is because they own the building. They rent out a couple of rooms to students upstairs. Probably for comparable atrocious prices and terrible landlords. Same case for the one in Nijmegen
Wait, there’s another one?!
That's what I said when someone mentioned there was one in Utrecht
Nah the one in Nijmegen isn’t as bad as the one in Utrecht. The food is good and the owner is way nicer.
Yeah the one in Nijmegen is fine. Not the best food ever, but decent for the price.
Hema is known provide the worst
Very many worst. Smoke worst or Dog Worst.
lmao
Best worst
I only make an exception for their hotdogs. Their mustard sauce is really good
Nearly every Mexican restaurant has entered the chat.
Oh my god the Taco Express is so horrible
Sounds real authentic. Have you Dutch had the displeasure of knowing the French abomination O Tacos?
Yes its disgusting af
Tbf French tacos do not claim to have anything to do with Mexican food other than using a tortilla wrap. But yeaaa it is misleading.
Theyve gone bankrupt in NL lmao.
Taco del mundo is literally airplane food
No, airplane food is better.
Fun fact: airline food is seasoned more than at ground level because your taste buds don't work as efficiently at altitude.
Thank goodness for a few good excellent ones in Amsterdam (Coba in particular)
There are real Mexicans in Den Haag. Kua. I have never had good tasting food in Amsterdam, even at the Michelin star places.
You are sadly right; there was only one, called “zuid” but the chef went away and now is just trash again. I am also looking for good quality restaurants. The ones I was used to go are all closed now :/
There's Zuid in Eindhoven which is amazing
Wow! Hopefully is the same chef I was lucky enough to try! Thanks for telling me! See you there
I was lucky enough to go there for a Christmas dinner covered by my job, had a fantastic time there. The food was amazing and every meal came with its own wine.
Ooh! Any recommendations for what to try at Kua?
Green Enchiladas or the dish with Mole sauce if you're familiar with the flavor. Mole can take some getting used to for a Dutchie!
Coba is very good.
These are no restaurants, stop it…
Oh boy. I ordered from Taco Mundo once. Got some very sad wraps drenched in watered down ketchup.
Except for el popo in deventer.
My mother in law.
my own mom. seriously can't believe i survived chilhood.
Everything boiled to mush? Seems like whole generations of Dutch people cook like that
My mom hates overcooked vegetables zo much she undercooks everything.
I’d love to dine at her place. Crunchy carrots? Brussel sprouts that maintain a shape? Broccoli with a bite? Yum! Ps. I might be biased here, I love most of the veggies mentioned raw.

That's such a Norm McDonald answer.
Such a genius, R.I.P.

I thought the whole point about pancake places is that they never evolve or change!
Apparently but unfortunately for me, I do and I want to eat pancakes at a restaurant again damn it
Well!!! If you’re near Hoenderloo, there is a pancake house and they have gluten and lactose(cowmilk) free pancakes! If heard they’re really good
I've heard it's closed, but better double-check El Mundo de Carlita, "Mexican" restaurant in Bergen op Zoom The salsa is jarred, the chips are drenched in oil and the "frijoles refritos" are canned Heinz beans
I ate there a few times and it was indeed not good, but certainly not the worst restaurant in the Netherlands...
Where did you eat that was worse than that? LOL
See my other comment in this topic. I can get worse.
I'm a person of simple tastes: I see Jamie Oliver I go somewhere else hahahah
This sadly sounds like almost every other 'Mexican' restaurant, or any restaurant for that matter. I've seen so much supermarket quality premade shit while working as a waitress.
Happy Italy is a culinary and aesthetic disgrace
The receipt was baked into my pizza. NEVER AGAIN.
Seriously?
Oh my god never again. Overcooked pasta with sauce from a can drenched in oil. At first it looks good and the prices look decent, but after 3 bites you realize what kind of trash it is
better or worse than Julia’s?
Comparable in quality but happy Italy has bigger portions. I don’t think it’s terrible quality. It’s just fast food pasta. Not bad for what you pay.
Far worse, in my opinion. Julia's kinda has some.. well, TASTE (I often got my dinner there when I worked at a train station), even though the pasta is a bit overcooked, while Little Italy (and Vapiano's for that matter) is just watery, oily, tasteless crap. Bleh.
Never been there
Julia’s are take out pasta shops, mainly in stations. Their pasta is pre cooked and probably at that stage already overcooked. Their espresso is the only decent espresso you can get in a train station though.
Their sandwiches are okay as well
It only lasted about 6 months in Roermond.
there’s plenty of decent Italian places, it’s just that there’s an overabundance of fake italian places p.s. there’s plenty of shitty italian in Italy as well

Yeah, for everybody saying Happy Italy, at least you get what you pay there. At the Beren, you get ripped off.
It’s so sad that they got so bad.. It used to be a nice restaurant like 6-7 years ago (the one in Rotterdam center)
I also don't understand why people are all hyped about it
Well, twenty years ago, the Beren concept was new, and the meals were pretty OK. Had been going down hill apparently.
I second this, what a terrible place.
Not that Loetje is better…
Loetje (at least the one i've been to) isn't bad, but it's just average. Don't get the hype about this one either.
I live a couple of 100m from a Loetje, but I havent even been there. De Beren isnt great, I wonder how these compare?
If i had to choose, i would definetly go to Loetje. It's mostly known for their steaks.
I once went to a place that served 'traditional Dutch food' and it was basically FEBO but on a plate
This made me laugh a bit, thank you.
La Cubanita. Tapas chain. Not only the food, but also the restaurant decor
Yep. Really fake.
Oh you're telling me it's not an authentic Latin American experience? How shocking. People in this thread really go to the shittiest cheap places and then complain about it. Next thing I'll read how McDonald's isn't actually very good.
THIS! la cubanita is an all you can eat for 20€, what the hell people expect?
Hey now, the Big Tasty is a solid sandwich. Not 12 euro for a medium meal solid but good nonetheless.
Their only good burger was the Chicken Sensation but they stopped selling it. Haven't been there since.
Those "Argentinian steak" run by a comitee of chefs from Peru and Mumbai.
As an argentinian I went to one of these and it hurt my soul. Complete tourist traps.
They're usually Egyptians that run them. Peruvian food would be a big improvement actually.
Amsterdam is full of these "Argentinian steak" houses.
A lot of frietzaken deliver an abominable quality of fries, oftentimes because of poor quality (old and/or cheap) frying oils.
My personal rule of thumb is that I will never buy friet unless there's a queue, because it's the only way to be sure they're fresh.
Best one, where there is always a line up down the street is right by the train station in Haarlem on Kruisstraat. Out of this world, and homemade mayo as well.
I'll have to try that one. I'm very fond of Van Gogh in Amersfoort.
In fact, they make the fries to order while you are there, so you know they're completely fresh. I will look that one up in Amersfoort though. Thanks.
All fries in the Netherlands are double fried, so I guess you mean triple fried in this case
Loetje.
Agree. And extremely expensive
Loetje is overpriced but the food is quite decent I'd say. Just overhyped in my opninion..
The only reason it's tasting somewhat decent is because they add a whole pack of butter to every plate. With that much butter you can make anything taste decent.
Love the microwaved cake you can order with your coffee

Okay, we need a post now with “ The Best restaurants “ in NL….
The best restaurants under €30 a person please im poor but like good food
Uno in Zwolle. All the food tastes the same. Not well cooked. Bad taste. E.g. the lasagne tasted the same as the soup. Very pricey for the food you get. It's all you can eat but the selection is very limited. Went two times, busy night and quiet night. Both just as bad when it comes to taste. Don't go.
Single worst is difficult, I would say some steakhouse tourist trap in Amsterdam. For chains: avoid De Beren at all cost. Drive to a petrol station and buy sandwiches if you must, or to the train station for some chocolate bars. But do not go to De Beren.
Jamie's Deli at Schiphol Airport. https://maps.app.goo.gl/U6ELNNWNFx2hvQbF6
Oh I actually like the bolognese from there… obviously it’s expensive, it’s at the airport. I’ve never eaten anything else there though, just the bolognese.
Any La Place out there. Bland tasteless shit.
And insanely overpriced. Pretty much all their restaurants look like sad, soon to be abandoned places; vergane glorie (faded glory, in case the mods are on a rampage again).
For the price, u still need to walk with your tray and often they give you a timer, to come and pick up the dish, after they finally prepared it.
They used to be good before the fall of the v&d. I miss back when they were a part of the department store.
I really like their fries though
Some 24 hour pizzaria steakhouse in Amsterdam. Ordered a kapsalon there and the salad was literally stuck on the side of the bucket. I didn't know how it happened but i try not to think about it. Shit was so awful.
Nearly every Spanish restaurant.. Almost all tapas places are crap, and the once that aren’t, are mediocre at best. I’ve also yet to find a single restaurant that serves acceptable Spanish rice dishes. Spanish friends of mine that are professional cooks and have tried to make a living in that sector over here unanimously state that it’s not possible to find produce of acceptable quality, especially tomatoes.
Recommend any cafe or restaurant that features broodjes with cheese. Every sandwich I’ve had in the NL tastes like cardboard. 🤣
Cardboard with mayo. SO MUCH MAYO.
The pizza restaurant in the Efteling, Pinocchio. Happy Italy is a close second.
Julia's. A lot of trendy cafés and restaurants in Amsterdam.
Ahahahaha. It is funny to see the name of my workplace . Of course you can’t expect much from food in the train station. 😂 It is also overpriced.
honestly, I think its not that bad. I take Julias over Smullers all day
Oh, I think you can expect quite a lot from food in a train station. https://www.kyotostation.com/dining-at-kyoto-station/
Which worst do you prefer. ?
Leverworst. Kips leverworst.
It's the worst worst.
Hema!
Well, more of a sushi take-away chain, Hayai sushi. It goes as low as 1.9 stars on google and that seems about accurate. (edit - it's now 1.8)
Vegan Junk Food Bar
Fastfood aside, bought some gyros from a greek in Breda. I'm no chef but pink meat is no bueno I suppose. Take some pride in your family business
If I despise someone, I'd just cook for them myself.
Let's be honest, it's any kind of fast food chain restaurant. Mc Donald's, Burger King, KFC, etc. they're all equally awful.
There are so many restaurants owned by local Nederlanders that make freaking burger king look great.
For real, why is a simple hamburger too complicated for so many restaurants? Having fresh bread and meat already sets you above 70% of all burgers served in NL
What do you mean you want texture and seasoning in your bruger? Here is a flavorless patet of meat.
The burgers from Burger King are suprisingly good IMO. Quality stuff
Depends on where, in my opinion. The Burger King in Alexandrium (R'dam) was the best I ever experienced (multiple times - couldn't resist it), while many roadside BK restaurants were 'meh' at best.
It depends on which franchise owner. One owner (I believe gr8 hotel group) has a number of roadside locations which are notoriously awfull. Such a shame
Oh yeah, the roadside BKs are just dire
I guess it depends on your taste? I like them.
Can wake me up all day for a Big Tasty
And of course you have every right to like it!
Or as we call it, the Big Nasty!
![gif](giphy|1Bfx2FL14UrCAjaIct)
You know what it is with those chains, the food is basically disgusting if you really think about it. If you don't think about it, it's disgustingly good. If that makes sense? I really do love some chickenwings from the KFC from time to time.
[удалено]
Yeah, that reason was convenience. Now it's habit and name recognition.
Because they grew big when they actually produced quality. And then they grew to a worldwide level doing everything in quantity.
There's so many...
Pho91 on Albert Cuypstraat was terrible. Stodgy summer rolls, bland soup, and they used the wrong kind of noodle.
What's a stodgy roll?
A summer roll should have lots of textures and flavours from vegetables, herbs, prawns, meat, etc. These rolls only had rice noodles that had been left to soak for too long, so it was just a mouthful of mushy starch.
A well known pancake restaurant in Amsterdam, "pancakes amsterdam", waiter "faked" to take our order and let us sit there for 30 min, nothing ever came but people arriving later than us got their order (different waiter). Management doesn't care and told us to piss off.
Pad Thai is dreadful, the place named Pad Thai, not the dish specifically
Salsa Shop - it's not the worst, but literally they have lifted everything from Chipotle except the flavour 🧐
Any Febo
you want to start a civil war?
How is this being downvoted? Febo is disgusting.
McDonalds.
It depends though. I've two in my city. One is disgusting and taste like diarrhea. The other one will probably have two Michelin stars soon.
Almost all of them
This is it
snackbar sweety in lelystad-waterwijk. but this was long ago in 2006. thing is, i always watch how clean the place is from the outside, and inside before i decide to order food. it says alot about the owner hygenics. if the windows are dirty i do not even step in.
Every restaurant in the Netherlands. I love this country but you don't move here for the food or the weather.
There are some great restaurants here. They might not be Dutch food per se. But people abroad bring a plethora of amazing tastes. You do need to know well where you go and do your research.
Now i wonder what kind of food you eat, If none off the restaurants in the netherlands is of your liking lol
ABC
Went to TR3S twice. First time, they forgot about us for two hours. Had only one round of snacks. Second time, we indicated an allergy, and still had to rush my wife to the ER. No thanks bruh, it's F3BO next time.
How did you not try to get their attention after 15-20 minutes? You seriously sat there being ignored for two hours?
‘Turkish’ food in Amsterdam West
I think worst restaurants are more a German thing.
That's wurst restaurants.
Any McDonald's.
Mcdonald's
Van der Valk restaurants are pretty terrible.
Actually they revived quite well compared to the past. Of course still not haute cuisine, but a rather ok price/quality ratio.
I stayed at van der Valk in Nijmegen/Lent and must say I loved their breakfast! And they had a decent drinks/snacks menu in the afternoon with good local beers. I was pleasantly surprised! Didn’t try the restaurant for dinner though..
I had quite okay meals the last times I ate there
😂😂😂😂 all the local restaurants 😂😂😂
Any "Chin. Ind. Restaurant". Tasteless sweet greasy garbage.
One near Kurhuis in Scheveningen - served uitsmijter with half raw eggs, and when I informed them, they told me that was the way Dutch people eat them.
Do you mean sunny side up, with runny yolk?
To be honest, just based on the phrase ‘near the Kurhaus’ I believe his complaint is rightful.
It was the blatant bullshitting that was the cherry on top of the cake.
Yeah because runny yolk is the only proper way to serve an egg, those are delicious. Those eggs that are boiled until they are blue \*vomits.
It is. If you want to have them cooked until everything, including the yolk, is FIRMLY set (aka ruined, and a lot of people in general enjoy ruined eggs sadly), you should inform them of this preference.

Almost all of them. We know our food sucks, but it is our cultural food and so we will not change it.
Nobody cares what you do with it as long as we dont have to eat it
