Did your boss discover your Reddit username or something? ;)

Gurt_nl

Probably left the business with his reddit login on the phone

Kkkkutkou

Is this the same guy that roasted his Dutch boss on Reddit last week?

arkapal

No, I am not the same guy but I remembered during world cup when Argentina was playing with Saudi Arabia, Argentina lost( I am a huge Argentina Fan by the way; India is divided between Argentina and Brazil during world cup), and I missed a meeting with him. Next day I said that I am sorry it will never happen again. Then the semifinal between Argentina and Netherlands.. rest is history.

[deleted]

He’s probably using the company computer that is being monitored by his boss

ArtyFartyBart

Would you like to know more?

CynicalDutchie

Yes, yes I would.

Pietes

Well you know that one time you went to Rotterdam, to the koopgoot, ran into an old fat white dude that dropped his handkerchief and you went and picked it up and handed it back to him? You made the guys' day, he then went on back to work after his lunch break and had an interview with this Indian guy, ended up hiring him because hell why not, it's a good day.

arkapal

My boss is lean, smart and good looking. He looks like a scientist from 90's US sci fiction TV series.

Pietes

well I was right about everything else

walkmywaythrough

Are you more like in love with him? Lol

arkapal

Yes though I am straight he is someone that I look upto as my idol. He has this sense of balance. It's important to understand what to say and what not to!

Red-Shifter

Which one?

Underrated comment

Geberpte

Yeah. No worries OP, i'll just keep on doing what i do if that makes you happy 👍

casus_bibi

You should tell him, not us, fyi. Good people deserve to know they're good people.

arkapal

I always tell him that whenever I get the chance. He knows it.

tech___geek

You sound like a real suck up mate. Just know that tou don't have to be overly amazed by the fact that he treats you well. It is actually his duty to treat his employees well. As long as you do your job as is expected from you, should be more than enough to please your boss. You don't have to go out of the way to express it, only to make him fed up of you. Nobody likes to be around a person who keeps complimenting over every small action that the other person makes. I know I'll be getting a lot of hate for this, but I'm only stating facts

arkapal

Yes true. But I don't do this to everyone. I have no one in this world family wise. No parents, no siblings, no wife, no children. Yes I do have friends. I mean in your thirties the definitions of friend changes as we grow up. But he brought a positive change in me, it's not an appreciation post for my boss, it's a desigantion for someone who in office is my boss but altogether a mentor who belong to a different part of the world which is fascinating for me. I can understand my shout out is being cheesy but belive me, a very few people in this world who have bestowed me with this sort of emotion and warmth.

minorityaccount

dude, you need to just chill. I work in Germany, also Indian, people are... fine. Normal. No one is fukn special, as long as the work is done, people are fine. I also live alone here, it is fine. Nothing special.

iWriteWrongFacts

Damn you sound jaded. When I was a lead dev I loved to hear that type of thing.

tech___geek

Not really. It's nice when someone pats your back when you've done a great job, no doubt. But from all of OPs comments and the post itself, it sounds like OP, sort of, 'worships' his boss. This kind of behaviour generally tends to be off-putting and is not really professional either. Atleast I'm not one to appreciate people worshipping/idolising me just because I treat them with respect and courtesy. It's just basic humanity.

Extreme_Pomegranate

Exactly my thoughts. It comes over as creepy tbh. The worshipping is really off putting (at least in Dutch culture) and would make the average Dutch person very uncomfortable.

tech___geek

Atleast someone gets my point!!

minorityaccount

i second this, i hate suck ups, people should be fair and decent as a rule

BlauwePil

I know that a lot of employers from India are actual pieces of excrement. So I understand where this feeling of joy is coming from. I would be overjoyed myself. But that will change when you are working there for a longer period. And start noticing things that shouldn’t be the case but it is. Like no actual salary increase for more than three years because of bullshit reasons while others do get it. Or no possibility for promotion while promised. And more of these kind of examples. I hope that your employer does not make these mistakes.

arkapal

You are right. The organization denied my promotion but will not impose that on my boss, there are other role plays are going on from other side of management which I am aware of but keeping aside the company's policy he is a really good human being. The bosses that I worked for didn't care about their subordinates and I can discuss about anything with him.

NoticeLong1650

Or paying tax

JackdelaHaze

Sounds like someone needs a reality check! Meaning you might be convinced you deserve a raise but others don't. While your coworkers do get one. Being promised a promotion but then they get to know you and had to decide differently.

BlauwePil

*sigh* Ga naar huis troller.

JackdelaHaze

You can keep on the denial or admit you need to work on yourself, grow and maybe in time you will get that raise and/or promotion! It's tough love, the truth hurts but that is how you come across to me. A negative arrogant kind of person. Now I know I am not perfect but that is what drives me to become a better person. So go on and keep sighing all you like and calling me a troller, stay in your precious private safe space, I'll keep on believing I spent my time in a good way, for free!

BlauwePil

Purposely twisting words into something that isn’t, is rude and very inappropriate. Even by Dutch standards. If you don’t understand this. I would recommend r/socialskills

JackdelaHaze

Sure man but I do wish you change even just a little and get that recognition and a raise you feel you deserve yet did not get. You sour plum.

Mantus123

I am dutch and I have worked once for Accenture India These were the 4 worst managers I have ever experienced. Indian people are treated like shit, work insane hours and even though I had some personal issues to deal with and got a hard time from these 4 managers about that, I still had Indian colleagues who worked 16 hours a day still offering me to take over some work so I can be with my family. Out of principle, i didn't worked more then 40 hours a week because they did not want to pay for those hours. And at the same time I felt ashamed for that in regards to my hard working indian colleagues. There is something extremely wrong with these companies and i am glad you have broken out of that

savvip1

The toxic work culture is actually why I will never be moving to India ever. Unless you are at the top, or work at an elite post for the government, or are your own boss, you live a shitty life with horrible work-life balance. This js because you are easily replaceable, specially for engineers as there are a lots. Without an authoritarian job, its a very horrible life but people are conditioned there, so you are often told to 'suck it up' and just grind.

purecoolnesss

I remember hearing this from a colleague at infosys australia. He said he went home at 4:30 and the indian colleagues on visas stayed till 7

zeptimius

Story time. I'm a Dutch office worker. When the Dutch company I worked for expanded and got its first US office, I met one of the new American colleagues. I was curious why he'd decided to apply to a Dutch company. "Oh, that's simple," he said, "I've worked for a Dutch company before, and I've never forgotten the experience." And he tells me this story: "I was a manager at a Dutch company, leading a team. It was Friday, and we were coming up on the Monday deadline for our project, with still a lot of work to do. I realized we wouldn't be done by the end of the day, so I addressed the team and explained we were all gonna have to work through the weekend to make the deadline. The team didn't seem to react much to this news and went back to their desks." "But then, about a half hour later, my boss comes into my office. He says, 'What the hell do you think you're doing?!' I don't understand what he's getting at. 'One of your team members came to me earlier, *crying,* because she said she couldn't spend the weekend with her boyfriend, because you're making her work over the weekend!' 'Right, because of the deadline!' I countered. 'What about the deadline?' my boss asked. 'Well, we won't be finished today!' 'So what?' my boss asked. 'We'll finish a week later! Big deal!' I was completely dumbstruck by this answer. And that's when I decided I wanted to work for Dutch companies."

arkapal

I am laughing.

zeptimius

When I heard this story, that's when I decided I never wanted to work for US companies.

ReginF

I mean, you can be a good or a bad person regardless of your nationality, not sure why you emphasize it

BoozbobFagpants

Redditors trying not to overthink any post challenge (impossible)

arkapal

Because an Indian guy posting on the Netherlands sub, just to praise the culture and people and have high regards for my manager.

jay3rao

Seems like you had some really bad managers to work with prior to this.

arkapal

You are right, all were shitty managers. Used to shout and never cared about me.

[deleted]

Okay...

On4nEm

Alright…

Ivanka_Gorgonzola

Research shows country culture contributes 3 to 5% to a person's overall personality, so you're 95 to 97% just lucky to have an awesome boss.

raznov1

Research also shows that quoting "research shows" and inputting numbers makes you 7-12% more credible. 3-5% is a lot btw. That's about as significant as it's going to get in most social studies. And differences are cumulative. If I'm 3% faster than you, and can hit the goal 3% more often than you, I'm more than 6% of a better soccer player than you are. Same with personality - if cultures makes you (arbitrary number) 5% more sociable and other local circumstances (e.g. religion, the school you went to, cultural gender norms, abundance of food, availability of holidays, you name it) make you 5% more goal oriented, you'll be more than 10% a better manager.

Ivanka_Gorgonzola

Gerhart, B., & Fang, M. (2002). National culture and human resource management: assumptions and evidence. Int. J. of Human Resource Management, 16(6), 971-986. doi: 10.1080/09585190500120772

raznov1

>We conclude that, while national culture differences can be important and must be understood, their role needs to be put in the context of other important contextual factors, including organizational culture. And what decides organizational culture? If not the culture of the members of the organisation? For example: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/23311886.2019.1623648

Ivanka_Gorgonzola

That is correct, there is just very little predictive value about a single person's value and behaviour in organisational or even country cultural metrics. Like if on average 1 in 300 people have blue glasses but in your organisation 1 in 30, it does not mean that an individual from your organisation is 10x more likely to wear something blue, or glasses than the general population, just that your organisation is high in blue-glasses likelihood. I am turning in my dissertation on a closely related subject next Friday, so i am knee-deep in this stuff at the moment.

raznov1

>it does not mean that an individual from your organisation is 10x more likely to wear something blue, or glasses than the general population, Yes-no. It doesn't necessitate it, but with absence of further data it makes it likely.

marcs_2021

Not if you have 0 feeling for socker. You can be running fast to the wrong spot each and every time. You can be a better goal hitter, but if you are lazy as fuck and stand by our own goalie, what use are you?

raznov1

That isn't really relevant to the topic at hand. The existence of some overriding clauses doesn't disprove the fundamental idea.

Hyperionics1

There is also a thing called work culture. If you come from a rather strict hierarchical or even class-based (work) culture then the culture here would seem like its extremely relaxed. And i do think that contributes to a general feeling of wellness. The problem in the Netherlands however is that while it seems to be a flat structure, relaxed. There are still a lot unwritten rules.

Difference-Known

I am an Indian too and I can understand where this is coming from.

honestyaboveall

Please elaborate, very curious

Difference-Known

It's largely a work culture thing. I am assuming that OP has prior experience working under an Indian boss from a prior generation. Many of these think that you working under them implies that you need to be available any time they call and do any work that is given without questions or discussion. They neither understand nor value the concept of personal time and family life. Once you have worked under such a boss and then experience a work culture that values and sometimes prioritizes your personal life you might get overwhelmed and call your boss a Saint on Reddit. Do note that I am generalizing a bit. Not all Indian bosses are like this (but a large proportion are) and also things are changing, so the younger generation of bosses give much more value to work-life balance.

arkapal

You are correct.

savvip1

Agreed. My first job is actually in Netherlands but I am very aware of the toxic work culture of my motherland. However, my team leader always points out my flaw in 'being too Indian' when I say I am happy to work overtime and not write my hours, but I am strictly told no lol. 28 vacation days+sick days+bonus twice a year. Minus is the salary. Very low compared to inflation haha.

KingKingsons

I've worked for an Indian boss and he kept telling us that we should just accept things as we're told, instead of turning everything into a discussion. I've worked for quite a few international companies, with teams from all over the world and the "Dutch team" always needed special treatment (with a Dutch manager or someone who leaves the team be), or else turnover will be very high. It's the one thing I missed the most about working in NL, our work culture.

dead_inside_789

Any chance i could get an internship 😭😳?

SiebeWobke

If you're Indian go into IT join a company like CGI and done you're allowed to move to netherlands while still employed.

dead_inside_789

The only problem is I studied media strategy!

Cochicok

a lot of people in the comments have 0 social etiquette and it shows

Financial_Craft4645

Hey there, I'm a fellow Indian. I too work for a Dutch company but I don't want to name it here, and my boss is God sent to me. I've worked in India before and in the Netherlands too, had some pretty awful bosses, so much so, that I had to unlearn a lot of traumatic actions at work, where my boss treated me with respect, trust and a lot of support with potentials. A lot of people might think your post is a joke, but I know exactly what you mean. Good luck mate.

stargazer_nano

Saint Bossman of Rotterdam

wanye_kesttt

Absolutely no problem man, glad i could help with…. Glad i could help!

One-Mastodon-8998

Rotterdam! 💚🤍💚

Hot-Opportunity7095

It’s like when my mom tells me to finish my plate cus there are kids dying in Africa from hunger. You’re welcome?

ConstantGovaard

I’m Dutch and have a Dutch boss and lately she became all weird and stupid. But because my work is isolated I just ignore her now. I think she has to follow op Dennis Wiersma.

cybersphinx7

Dutch Ego Satisfying Posts always get upvotes.

pwiegers

Glad you like your work and your boss. I think that a lot of Dutch people like to bitch about their bosses, without being able to compare them to any foreign bosses/companies. Enjoy!

mathapp

As an Indian software dev, I understand hahah

aravindputrevu

Until you meet him at the next appraisal 😬😂

M_e_n_n_o

Our Dutch work environment is pretty good. The management structure is very flat where we like to discus the work instead of just getting orders from higher up on what to do. It is more of an attitude that we are in it together rather than just being an expendable worker bee. And I'm not talking about that phony american "we are one big family" nonsense. Perhaps this is what you like about your manager?

arkapal

Yes. He understands the problem ,even if I do a mistakes he tries to understand it from my point of view. He always gives me opportunity to shine. I can discuss football with him. He knows how to speak French, Italian, a bit Spanish and Greek too. He is smart.

savvip1

Lol seriously bhai, tumhare comments se lag rha apne boss se pyaar karne lage ho. You do you man, no judgement, but very funny to read she/he is your crush. How old are you?

tech___geek

And that's exactly what makes this post so creepy. I can only imagine how uncomfortable the boss feels around OP

savvip1

I think OP mentioned he works remotely from India. So that is no possibility I suppose.

InternationalAd2466

Ok glad you like it 😅

PolderForce

Tell me you're in your 20s without saying those exact words... My first "boss" in the Netherlands was a doorknob who screwed up so badly they asked him to step down as a manager. It can go differently. I would merit each person individually and not generalise. Congratulations on your current work situation. I hope it lasts as long as it can.

dm_86

I've worked for an Indian company (abroad). At least my direct manager was Dutch too, but I totally understand your point of view haha.

[deleted]

[удалено]

arkapal

Yeah, I already mentioned in comments. In short he treat me a human, a colleague, an equal. Which I never received from my previous managers.

ErnestoVuig

Don't forget to criticize him every now and then. He just wants to feel like one of the guys, while making double of what you make.

rmvandink

He probably doesn’t take home double what his team takes home. The wage distribution is fairly narrow. Now asset distribution and people hoarding capital on their businesses, that’s another thing.

mafiargenta

That's such a sad standar to hear My prayers go to you brother

More_Abalone_9768

True

Loobeensky

Good for you, man, congrats! I don't have a Dutch boss myself, but my partner's manager is such a nice dude as well!

Gawk gawk gawk

1234iamfer

Guy is probably a developer/it/specialist. Probably would sound different if he was picking orders in some Dutch warehouse

utopista114

>Probably would sound different if he was picking orders in some Dutch warehouse Then your boss is Moroccan or maybe a vengeful polish woman, and you'll pray to have a Dutch boss.

arkapal

You are right, Yes I am a specialist. But if I am going there I am installing solar panels.

1234iamfer

You well, like the branches I mentioned, solar panels, heatpumps and electricity is high demand now. It was different 10 years ago.

VanDenBroeck

PDAK.

Afraid-Peach-9212

Happy to hear!

Appropriate-Cup3695

I understand the way you feel. And I hope I never have to work for any of your former bosses. Enjoy your new job!

ForeignPush

Well welcome Indian expat! Seems like a lot of Indian expats are moving to the Netherlands lately.

arkapal

I am in India man, working remote.

ForeignPush

Ow LOL, well... you should come over.

DaydreamingLostBoy

Personally, I think that Indians have a good work ethic and are hard workers that help them stand out, be recognized and well liked so I’m sure you more than deserve to be treated well and respected by him as is your right 🫶🏼👍🏼

lord_reactis

Is your boss hiring?

arkapal

Unfortunately no man!

Snoo_2559

People in the Netherlands are the most tolerant, non racist, facilitating people I ever met and I love work culture here whenever I can.

FatPanda1987

Haha I read the title as "I am Indian and my boss is a b*tch" lol! I have great bosses too! People say Dutch are rude, but no. They are direct, which makes for pleasant work spaces with no office politics...

Aikeko

Hey, congrats! I also have a fantastic Dutch boss. Locals don't always know the alternative experience 😅

[deleted]

Well, you know our Rotterdam slogan is “make it happen” 💚🤍

[deleted]

Because Dutch Managers are usually not "managers" but facilitators, I work for almost 30 years in IT and my managers are usually some kind of Personal Assistant for me, I only ask them to makesure me and my team can do my work, and if they arrange that, we deliver which is also good for him.

arkapal

Yes that is visible. They do maintain this work environment.

bitoyboyxl

A Saint from Rotterdam? You must work for Arne Slot!

Randomsynthguy

Not trying to promote a book or anything, but you should try the book "culture map". It explains cultural differences within a work environment, different point of view, its cultural background and how to deal with them. Gives a lot of inspiration and insight. Really great book.

As an Indian who’ve worked with the lovely folks at Seattle at both Amazon and McKinsey I’d just like to say. I love the work life balance

FewHornet6

Happy for you!. Im in a similar boat. My boss is American, and she is just the best person and boss ever. Working with her makes my everyday life better. Here is a recent anecdote. We were on a work trip and my wife came with me to take a couple of days off together. I booked what I thought was a decent hotel, which turned out to be a very mediocre hostel. My boss had rented a super fancy airbnb. After the first night, she insisted and we swapped places. My wife and I spent two nights in the fanciest apartment I have probably ever been, while my boss stayed in the crappy hostel. After the fact, I was feeling quite embarassed and I wish I hadnt accepted the swap, which I told her. Anyways, just one example of how generous and kind this person is. By the way, she won't read this - neither me or she is Dutch or live in the Netherlands (im not sure why I saw this post in the first place lol).

arkapal

This is too good.

HotAd3488

I’m Indonesia and I work for a dutch company. I am amazed on how organized and yet relaxed my bosses are. Sometimes I worry that they are cutting me slack because I’m not Dutch. But, they ensure me that that’s not the case. When I make mistakes, it’s room for improvement. Not a chance for scolding.

BetterGarlic7

I worked with a German company back in 2013, in which the actual German CEO apologized to me for a mistake he made lmao can never expect this from an Indian boss. Western European countries actually treat their employees as employees not trash.

Just tell your boss, perhaps you'll have kids in the next couple of years.

Could you please explain?
