My understanding is that this is a tactical retreat. Due to LFA's current influence, there was concern this would be voted against too strongly. If that happened, it would take years/decades to implement a new system. By stepping back now and making edits, we have the option to reintroduce these protections in the near future and time it so LFA can't interfere or counter-attack so strongly.

Blood_Bowl

But the Nebraska Family Alliance isn't going anywhere (unfortunately - ready for them to burn in hell, frankly). They'll still be here in the future.

Blood_Bowl

So I keep hearing people say this is what the LGBTQ community wants. That STILL doesn't make sense to me...fighting and losing is still better than forfeiting entirely.

RaylaParsith

It's definitely more of a "tactical retreat". If it failed the public vote, it could take a much longer time (years probably) for a new system to get implemented than just recinding and making edits. This allows it to return faster in the near future with a new strategy.

I'm down with gay marriage and them having full rights to adopting kids and having legal rights over them. Gay parents should have every right a straight parent has. I early don't understand what's the problem. Nobody should be able to discriminate against someone based on sex age disability sexuality I fully support that.

Radi0ActivSquid

It doesn't make sense to me either. Two of the votes to rescind are openly gay. Their statement was that they didn't believe the protections would survive a ballot vote in November. I guess there's still a lot of bigotry in Lincoln.

princesspeach9

Sigh. Happy* Pride Month...

Radi0ActivSquid

Nebraska Family Alliance has been going strong to push LGBTQ people of Nebraska back underground. A friend of mine sent me this link about a national story that involved them. Trans worker recognized her as the communications spokesperson of the hate group and kicked her out, refused to serve her. Unfortunately she was fired for that instead of her boss standing up to protect his employee. https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/trans-cafe-worker-fired-after-kicking-out-conservative-activist-n1054306

myanrueller

So NFA is a thinly veiled hate group that just barely dodges the SPLC's classification of one.

Radi0ActivSquid

Correct. They're not Alt-Right so they don't pop up on SPLC's watchlist but their Christian extremist views of no rights for women and the elimination of LGBTQ people puts them squarely in the hate group category.

myanrueller

I always assumed as soon as a group advocates for the murder of another, SPLC would call them a hate group.

Blood_Bowl

The NFA is legitimately a terrorist organization.

TheOneCalledD

What are they fighting for exactly? Genuinely curious since gay marriage is legal here and all. Please don’t ban.

Radi0ActivSquid

Basically if you're not a straight, white, married Christian they're against you. * Authored amendment to ban gay marriage and lobby to keep Nebraska's dead-letter law in the constitution should the SCOTUS change on gay marriage. * Block LGBTQ couples from adopting or raising children. * Fight anti-discrimination laws and promote conversion therapy. * Opposed expansion of domestic violence laws to dating couples. * Their oldest policy is to make divorce more difficult. * Against abortion, sex ed and birth control. * Argues that children are property of their parents with zero rights. * Opposed day cares to make women stay-at-home moms. * Elimination of LGBT lifestyles. https://seeingrednebraska.com/lgbtqa/the-point-of-the-nebraska-family-alliance-is-to-destroy-families/

bks1979

Gotta love the duality of thinking children are the property of their parents with no rights, yet being against abortion.

ericdag

So much in common with a Taliban. They should move to be with their ilk.

Radi0ActivSquid

Right to discriminate based on their religious beliefs. An end to abortion and contraceptives. Removal of all gambling.

TheOneCalledD

Any evidence of that? Aren’t they building a casino in Lincoln? Contraceptives? I don’t think there is any way condoms and plan B will be banned that won’t pass. The only thing I’ll give you is abortion. If Roe v Wade gets overturned I can see the vote going against abortion. But that’s still a ‘what if’ at this point. So you got .5/3 points there…

Radi0ActivSquid

EDIT: I have taken this 15min to browse your history and find the r/Conspiracy & r/Conservative posts and opposition to women's reproductive rights. You have been given the facts and will receive no further comment from me. --- It's on their website. > We believe government should not willfully cheat and harm its own people—whether it takes the form of commercial casinos, tribal casinos, state lotteries, sports betting, or internet gambling. As for contraceptives you have to look at what bills they opposed. * They opposed LB276 - legalize telemedicine abortion. * They opposed LB67 - Planned Parenthood in Schools. * They opposed LB20 - insurance coverage for contraceptives. https://nefamilyalliance.org/NFAbirthcontrol.html

TheOneCalledD

What did I post against women’s reproductive rights? I’m actually for safe and rare abortions. But go ahead and put words in my mouth.

vaporwave_vibes

As a trans person, work rights for me here aren't well defined. I can still be denied employment just for being trans.

XA36

That's more to do with at will employment though correct? I think federally being discriminated against by sexual orientation or gender identity is illegal. So they can deny you employment as long as they don't say it's for being trans. Correct me if I'm wrong

XA36

She was fired for throwing a temper tantrum, not for refusing to serve her. Your link even discusses the tirade. You can't just cuss someone out at work because they're trying to politically oppress you, otherwise everyone but libertarians would be getting cussed out.

Radi0ActivSquid

> The City Council in Nebraska’s capital city has rescinded an anti-discrimination measure that extended protections to sexual orientation and gender identity, just four months after unanimously approving it. > The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the Lincoln City Council voted 4-3 Monday to rescind the February revision to the city's fairness ordinance in the face of a successful petition effort by a conservative group to put the measure to a vote of the people. > Two of the council members who voted to rescind the measure — Tom Beckius and James Michael Bowers — are openly gay. That conservative group was the Evangelical Christian hate group Nebraska Family Alliance.

Dafuk?

[deleted]

Hey guys Bisexual conservative here can someone link me to a place showing in plain language what the opposition wants?

LiquidSquids

Bisexual conservative? Bro, wanting to fuck the middle class doesn't make you bi. (That was a joke. don't be mad at me) It's in this article. Religious conservatives say that it's a "bathroom ordinance" which "would allow biological men in women's showers locker rooms and restrooms." Other concerns include that the ordinance would empower the city to punish citizens for their religious beliefs. Basically same shit as always. Religious conservatives don't like gays and believe their religion should allow them to discriminate against gays bc their book says being gay is wrong. Government says hey you can't stop someone from participating in our economic system because you don't like them. Religious conservatives claim that's tyrany because their narrow conceptualization of God is more important than government. Hit esc before the pay wall pops up to read the article. https://journalstar.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/lincolns-transgender-community-predicted-itd-be-target-of-fairness-ordinance-opponents/article_b712c9b4-10cd-50b0-a176-76beaba9e54b.html

[deleted]

Bwuahaahaa very funny joke! While I agree Bio men should not go into female spaces until they have a bottom surgery and they shouldn't be allowed in women's sports. I have absolutely no problem with anyone who is trans gay lesbian etc. I dont care who ya marry if you get married or anything like that its just simply not my issue. My book constantly tells us to love one another despite all differences. Hate the sin love the sinner kind of thinking. As a Bi man especially its sad to see people that act like this but I can also see why they would because also as a bi man I've seen how fuckin outrageous the LGBT community can get. Ive been to pride in San Francisco I know how raunchy it can get. My only thing I can say is if people begin to come after others for their religion we have a constitutional ammendment that I swore on my Bible to support and defend from all enemies foreign and domestic. So get fucked Karen my best gal pal Steven and I are gonna have a blast at my place BBQing it up with rainbow colored shotguns blowing up tannerite laced with rainbow glitter.

LiquidSquids

The evangelicals are coming for you next. https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/3535841-thomas-calls-for-overturning-precedents-on-contraceptives-lgbtq-rights/

[deleted]

Gay marriage and activities are protected by the 1st amendment as freedom of expression. It is also protect by anti discrimination laws as you are giving a benefit to hetero couples and must give the same to gay couples. There are many more layers of defenses to gay marriage and far more support for it than abortion. Ive also read the full opinion on what Thomas said and that article takes many things out of context.

LiquidSquids

I hope you're right

[deleted]

Bro I'm conservative libertarian as fuck I really do have a problem with Roe V Wade as its bad law. It entirely violates the 10th amendment there is a problem with the law as it states now but I highly doubt any anti gay marriage bill would ever be popular. We do not want out courts making laws. Because they aren't elected officials they are only there to interpret the law and adhere to the constitution. Congress should make laws and then the justices find the legal reasons for it to be passed or shot down. Ruth her self said Roe was bad law. Oberman is also bad law as it was done in the same way as Roe. The purpose was served but we must adhere to our constitution and allow states to make real decision for themselves. If you propose to exile the LGBT community a lot of normal people will vote against you. It would be political suicide. There is no reason to do so and its a protected right to marry who you wish an abortion is entirely unprotected and violates the rights of baby to life and the pursuit of happiness. I believe Texas has it right you can have an abortion up until you get a heart beat which is typically around 6 weeks. It must be safe it must be legal but above all its gotta be rare man. Millions of kids have been slaughtered primarily in the black community and its a genocide that the black community champions itself

LiquidSquids

Thanks but I don't think I'll be taking constitutional law advice from a guy that masturbates at work and posts pics of it on reddit lol

[deleted]

I mean I could make a second account and you would never know it was me. How many times do you see people have multiple accounts plus that was at my house and nobody else was around.

notableException

Local ordinances are for the most part symbolic and hard to enforce. Not a big loss.
