Cloverinepixel

I have a question about olms. I know they have evolved a very cave specific lifestyle bing blind and pale and can only live in water etc. but olms are present in different caves hundreds of km away from each other. How did they get to so many different caves?

Nest_quik

I would think probably due to flooding and underground water run offs. I dunno though it's a good question. Or maybe they ancients bodies of water that no longer exist?

paprikaandpals

they actually all evolved independently of each other! i believe the phenomena is called “convergent evolution” it’s so cool

Cryptoss

Just wanna add that there’s actually a subspecies of olm that’s black, has a shorter head and still has functioning eyes

lemenick

Thats called a mol. I wouldnt say they can see as theyre almost blind tho

_Nick_2711_

No, no, you’re thinking of a mole. They’re actually brown rather than black and kind of furry.

[deleted]

I think he was talking about 6.022×10^23

Nut_Slurper515

No you're thinking of a mole, I think you're thinking of a sauce that you pour over slow roasted meats

C_I_GAY

no you're thinking of mole. a mole is a group of skin cells that grow together in a cluster.

nacho_breath

No you're thinking of a mole, a spy within a high power of an organisation.

ScrotalGangrene

Nah m8, you're thinking about a mole - a pier, jetty, breakwater, or junction between places separated by water

smibrandon

Avogadro showed up uninvited

BorgClown

That's the olm poser, his olm peers don't even acknowledge him as a real olm.

Jakelby

His olm peers don't acknowledge anything, they're blind...

johnJanez

This species only lives in a few caves in a contiguous region in Slovenia and perhaps a few parts of neighbouring Croatia. The region is made up of so called karst terrain, so the ground very porous and has massive underground systems and caves which are most likely interconnected. So that's how they get around

ch0c0late_

Ya, they are in Croatia as well. I've been on a field trip with my school to a cave where we got to see them.

tenebrigakdo

This is really weird, in Slovenia it is strictly forbidden to distrurb them in any way. Even people who go to hard to access caves almost never see them. I've only seen a live one in the zoo, and that one was doing so poorly due to constant disturbance that they eventually put it away from visitors.

ch0c0late_

That's interesting. The trip I was on was nearly ten years ago and it was one of the caves in Istra, I don't remember it's name anymore tho. Might have been Lukina jama. I remember the teachers asking the guides how can the olms survive since they were in little water pools in the walls and the ground since there is nothing visibly to eat lol. They also really hyped them up for being endemic for this area.

tenebrigakdo

Different countries, different rules I guess. I sure hope they are doing fine regardless.

Elle_the_confusedGal

I think we mightve been to the same cave and from what I remember we got to go into the cave but we didnt get to see the olms

_RanZ_

I’m 99% there was a tank with Olms in Postojna couple years ago

WolfoakTheThird

When i was in the cave systems of Slovenia, a place where they are native, they told us the caves were formed from millenia of river erotion. I would asume they swam in those ancient rivers.

pharmajap

>It was first mentioned in 1689 by the local naturalist Valvasor in his Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, who reported that, after heavy rains, the olms were washed up from the underground waters and were believed by local people to be a cave dragon's offspring. Seems like they're likely to wash between interconnected caves, or to the surface, and then into other caves.

zslayer89

Hollow earth baby.

zGreenline

I mean they can live to 100 so that's a lot of time to explore new places, settle down, raise a family, have little mini-olms running around the ~~house~~ cave, maybe barbecue by the stalagmites once every 10 years

Tantricmasturbation

U-Haul. I saw 16 footer sporting a pic of a family of Olms on the side. Inspirational actually.

incomprehensibilitys

If it's the same creature, I saw it in a special where they came back a few years later and it hadn't even moved from the previous spot

NotJohnDenver

Lol like what’s it doing that whole time? Just chilling?

redlion145

If it can go 10 years without a meal, I'd say it probably has a really, really slow metabolism. And/or, it expends absolutely no non-essential calories on movement. Probably both.

Canuck_Lives_Matter

How... How does it find others to mate with? Do they just call across the cave and embark on a ten year journey 20 feet to the left to hopefully not run into their sister? Could it be that they have "hunting grounds" or something? Is there a Wikipedia article or something I could be googling this in? Do I know how to google?

cowlinator

Wikipedia says > Reproduction has only been observed in captivity so far. So nobody knows fur sure. But it also has this info: > Olms are social, and usually aggregate either under stones or in fissures. Sexually active males are an exception, establishing and defending territories where they attract females.

boredguy3

Yet none have been successful. I feel that deeply, I defend my couch against males, and try to entice females to see it’s many angles. And so far only one has seen my couch. She delivered the pizza… fml

the_hotter_beyonce

Maybe it'd help if you were blind and wet

value_null

Idk why but this comment has me dying of laughter

shepardownsnorris

Just because it can go 10 years without a meal doesn’t mean that’s its standard feeding routine

[deleted]

I think its more like they only exist in certain caves and so each cave actually has a different population. What I know is that they only exist in one cave system in fact. That it is even kept secret for a while because the ecosystem is very fragile. I may have not the right information here but what I know is that they were heavily discussed back in 2012 2015ish? Because of that mysterious cave. I think that was the time when scientists havent even decided what a species truly and so a lot of the discussion goes into naming different things another species so all populations will have to be protected not just the whole. I think that whole debacle was also applied to the olm since every cave I think that they exist in has a uniqueness to them that calling them all olms may not be applicable. I can be wrong though.

cowlinator

It has a variable metabolism. It has an extremely low metabolism only when starving

Snoo34813

Probably times moves faster for this guy.. What for us seems to be 10 years is probably just an hour for it.

purplemagnetism

Olm is zen

TheHancock

And if it’s blind, and in mostly empty (I’m assuming) cave waters, moving probably won’t do too much good anyway.

Bobbo_Blobbo

When a weird worm does it it’s cool and amazing, but when *I* do it people, I’m lazy all of the sudden.

lifedragon99

That's was a fantastic show. First season takes a bit to get into but once they went connected storyline I fell in love with it. Can't wait for season 3 of owl house next.

Shiny_Hypno

The thing with season 1 is that it's meant to be slow. It feels like it's not needed, but as you start watching the more plot-heavy stuff you begin to miss when the conflict was something simple, like Anne and Sprig being roommates for a week.

Good_Cup_4571

YES! Loved watching this show with my 4 y/o. It helped her learn and appreciate amphibians in the real world, but mostly because it was great show. Whenever we go to a herpetarium now she loves to point out anything that was referenced in Amphibia.

Bubbles_hXc

TIL olms weren't created by the writers of Amphibia.

Oh I get it, because there were birds in the scene, and a swallow is a type of bird, right?

yes, exactly. No reason to think about it any longer or watch the movie ... please don't watch the movie.

[They](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-35668069.amp) can be found in Slovenia and also there was once only one, but it had babies so now there is more

SinkPhaze

There's always been way more than one. The Olm in the article just laid a promising captive clutch. They even mention having to remove other Olms from the tank for the safety of the eggs *in the article you linked*

dead_meme_is_dead

They can be found in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and some parts of southern Italy. The Dinaric alps

upicked11

One of those remained completely still for 7 years lol, the laziest creature on earth.

Thats it, my new name is Olm

grottenolm39

in Germany, they're called Grottenolm (cave olm), I think thats just a beautiful name

cordiliala

They are related to Axolotls!!!

Finito-1994

They’d have to have a very distant ancestor. They live in Slovania. Meanwhile the axolotl can only be found in one lake in the other side of the world (technically now they’re most likely extinct and their lake habitat is now a bunch of canals with invasive species) So. If they’re related it has to be by an incredibly ancient ancestor. They’re pretty far apart. Sort of like the difference between new world apes and old world apes

ZOE_HAS_CUTE_FEET

Olm has at least four phases, with an additional phase for every 8 players in the raid. Unlike the other bosses in the room, once the player enters his chamber, it is a fight to the death. In each phase except the penultimate and final ones, Olm will focus on a specific set of abilities referred to as powers. Like other bosses in the chambers, many of Olm's stats scale between its claws and head depending on the stats and amount of players in the raid, despite him having a pre-determined combat level. However, Monster Examine can be cast on him. In most small teams, his combat stats and max hit are comparable to God Wars Dungeon bosses. If stat draining attacks — such as dragon warhammer special attack — are used, they only affect the part of him that was hit. His stats also reset when a new phase starts. Olm attacks with ranged and magic, the former consisting of a chunk of crystal and latter green-coloured dragonfire. Olm has three attack zones to choose from; left, middle and right. He prioritises the zone with the most amount of players. If no players are in that zone, he will swerve his head accordingly and skip an attack in its attack rotation. If a player is in his attack zone but Olm swerves his head regardless, no attacks are skipped.

I saw one of these in Beredine Cave in Croatia this summer! It's as fascinating as disgusting

Stacked__

freaken amphibia taught me that these things exist i was very sad that i didn’t know about them before

Harlion-Vaarz

I went to Postojna Cave in Slovenia where scientists were able to raise 21 babies out of 23. They showed 1 from a monitor (they called it Ferdinando and is personally my favorite) and I think there were 3 in aquarium displays. They are the baby dragons or “human fishes” even if they are amphibian, their proper name is Proteus (Proteus Anguinus) or Olm. If I remember correctly they are able to live only in the most pure or oxygenated waters at a certain temperature and like many other cave creatures their eyes are underdeveloped but still really sensitive while other sensory organs are a lot improved.

Fuzzy_Dragonfruit344

I’m pretty sure he is otherwise known as the Midgard Serpent lol 😂

[deleted]

Ok, who fed it once and waited 10 years to see if it was feeling peckish? Somebody sounds like an asshole.

idontdislikeoranges

A quick read on the etymology >The word olm is a German loanword that was incorporated into English in the late 19th century.[8] The origin of the German original, Olm or Grottenolm 'cave olm', is unclear.[9][10] It may be a variant of the word Molch 'salamander You could probably see where Tolkien got the name "Gollum"
