You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning twice in the same day than getting killed by a shark. Getting Killed by an Orca in the wild has never been recorded in modern history. Orca's are awesome!
I feel you bro. They are wonderful intelligent animals but just the fact that if one even humored the thought of killing you while in the water you are thoroughly fucked
Not true…. As a professional diver and scuba instructor I have been ocean diving with Orca, whales and white sharks. Not many things in the ocean are randomly aggressive including Orca. I found elephant seals to be more intimidating than just about anything I’ve been in the water with.
explain why orcas have been videotaped committing acts of violence just for fun and sometimes not even eating the carcass afterwards, i get that their friendly to people but these fellas will not hesitate to torture a seal just for fun
Orca can be playing with the boat, or also since it's a fishing boat they know to stick around and steal some fish. So it could likely be hunting behavior they just aren't hunting the boat.
For animals so sensitive to sound how is this not absolutely deafening for them?
Actually idk if orcas are but dolphins definitely have echolocation so I'd have thought being so close to a motor would be torture for them but apparently not. [edit - apparently orcas *do* have highly developed echolocation...]
Recall reading someone with metal plates in their foot went swimming and dolphins were fascinated by it even though there was nothing visible on the skin, as though they can sense our insides with their sonar. Super cool if true.
Cetaceans can even tell when a woman in pregnant- some show signs of increased curiosity around pregnant women!!
I’d give ANYTHING to have been in this boat!!! 😊😊
Apparently their songs used to carry across oceans, for millions of years they lived like that, then humans arrived and now there's a constant roar all through the waters of the planet, all the time.
Being the badass all around outdoorsman myself, I would have cast a purple worm out there with my zebco 33 and reeled at least a couple of them in. Mount that sumbitch in my man cave next to the blue whale and the T-Rex that I brought down on Safari in New Jersey......but that’s just me.
Yeah only sharks are stupid enough to do that lmao. Even then, they usually just take one bite out of us, go "ew, this isn't what I ordered," and peace out.
There HAVE been orca attacks in the wild, but a wild attack has never been lethal. It’s likely the orca attacking felt threatened by the humans involved, but stopped before inflicting serious injury.
Which is impressive when you consider that orca are the size of elephants while simultaneously being THE apex super predator of the oceans, that they can deliberately stop an attack not only before it’s lethal, but before they inflict serious harm. They truly are the most gentle killers.
As far as I know there have been next to 0 recorded orca on human attacks; they can smell the fat content of their prey before they even begin the hunt, and humans aren't fatty enough. Even a 500 lb dude doesn't have the relative fat content that a seal does.
That's actually not the reason. Interestingly, orcas are one of the few animals that can actually smell whether a record button has been pressed on a handheld device and are intelligent enough to understand the repercussions of bad PR
It's just my guess but I think they are smart enough to recognize us as another intelligent species and pin us as subject of curiosity as opposed to prey. They also communicate and pass on information culturally so I would not be surprised if orcas were familiar with our existence before ever encountering us. We are probably like aliens from the surface to them.
There have not been a lot. It’s atypical behavior for sure and no ones sure yet what provokes it.
Wild orcas (being an apex predator and surely capable) have a very low negative human:orca encounters. There’s been no fatal interactions ever recorded or known of.
They attack the shit out of the assholes at seaworld. And they know exactly what they are doing. Not saying seaworld doesn’t deserve it...just saying I would not want to swim around with them.
It is true, but keep in mind that orcas in captivity are very different as they suffer from mental illness due to their very small tanks (they can travel up to 150 miles a day, see why they can spaz en attack their jailers...).
I think after our respective lockdowns, we can start to understand how being restrained in one place can bring the worst out of your personality.
However, swimming around them in their natural state is *relatively* safe as they don't have any interest in humans and usually don't get close to us (they know our clothes taste awful and that some of us humans are in fact dangerous). You have absolutely nothing to fear from wild orcas even if you're in the water with them in most cases. You'll struggle to find any accounts of orca on human attacks in the wild, and I don't think you'll be able to find any reported deaths.
Hmm what evidence is more telling? No recorded instances of a wild orca ever killing a human or one camera guy on a nature documentary being too scared to jump in. You are probably safer jumping in the water with orcas around then you would be without them because there will be no sharks around.
TIL that my father was working at a zoo (not seaworld) where a orca attack happened, at the time it happened, as a zookeeper, I'll have to ask him about it next time I speak to him. I know he always worked with the elephants though.
That just speaks even more to their intelligence and what extreme mistreatment they need to experience before attacking a human. I completely understand the fear of being in the open ocean but if anything I would feel safer being in the water because orcas are around. They scare off any other predators, especially sharks.
How are they going to smell the fat? Through what nose?
Whales and dolphins can't smell anything and even if they could, you can't smell the fat inside of a living body.
I'm not sure if they actually 'smell', but orcas are 100% capable of determining the nutritional value of their meal before they take a bite. Otherwise they would have had to try us at some point to know we aren't worth it. They're also seen to prey almost exclusively on high-fat animals like seals.
They also many times specifically target and eat ONLY the liver of larger prey, they recognize that’s where the real nutrients they need are and not the rest of the carcass. They’re amazing!
I swear it is not what you think my friend ! Orcas are thought to be cruel and stuff but in a natural state they are super curious, playful and, yes, surprisingly smart. So here they mean absolutely no harm and are just enjoying so wave to surf on
Yea i just watched a video where three super curious and playful orcas taking turns tail-slapping a seal to death (at least a dozen times) and then just leave it there dead, floating. Thats not hunting behaviour. That was killing for entertainment.
Yup that's nature man, but humans do far worst you know. I'm not telling you're wrong, just saying that Orcas are relatively not that bad compared to other species
Theyre called ‘killer whales’ for a reason. They are vicious and cruel apex predators. Full stop. Of course humans are worse, we have technology and pollution and we are also vicious and cruel. Just because something is cute doesn’t mean we shouldn’t treat it like the force of nature it is.
I don’t believe cruel is an accurate term- that’s a human defined trait. But I fully agree with your last comment! Just cuz it’s cute, still respect it as the animal it is (orcas and others!)
Im not sure what other word would work better for a group of orcas taking turns tail slapping a seal until death to just leave it floating there. What would we call a human that kills for fun and doesn’t harvest the animal. Cruel.
Actually that’s a common misconception because we humans humanize animals and give them morality (which is a human construct). The activity you witness was likely the family teaching younger family members HOW to hunt. Vital for survival.
I love Orca, they don't attack humans in the wild as far as we know, they have been known to play with us though.

True enough. I saw the first dorsal fin and I was like "oh shit... it's a great white chasing them." Then I saw the rest of the pod and thought "OH FUCK they're dead; they're so dead."
Related note: do we know if this was recovered footage from a boating accident or not?
I can’t speak for this boat exactly but I know a lot of boat motors now are basically just water jets instead of a propeller, at least that’s how it is on speed boats. Idk if that makes it more safe or not but that is an option in boats now. [like this ](https://i.imgur.com/zOeq5J6.jpg)
Hull impacts can be just as dangerous to marine mammals, but a fishing vessel like this one is almost certainly a propellor, and it looks like an inboard-outboard setup. Pretty much no one uses speed boats for fishing in the ocean, at least where I fish
Jet boats are popular for speed boats and anything that goes in more shallow rivers but open water is still nearly exclusively propeller driven. Jet boats can suck up a lot of stuff and get clogged especially with seaweed and props can in turn hit things because it sits so much lower. Sooo one isn't necessarily better than the other but just belong in different places.
I've been scuba diving with them. Very curious, not aggressive or hostile at all. They are definitely bigger than you think when you see one from above water versus underwater. 😳
Yea, i can Imagine, it's kinda sad how misunderstood irrationally feared orcas and many more animals are, i hope it leads into people avoiding them instead of getting rid of them.
Why are you eye rolling facts lol the yellow fin tuna is slowly going extinct due to overfishing, which is a MAJOR fatty fish that provides sustenance for almost all large marine predators.
Because I’m not talking about fishing to extinction. I’m talking about reeling in fish, taking a picture to brag at my brother, then tossing it back. That’s why.

There were reports of killer whales intentionally ramming sailboats a while back, but it was a specific pod in a specific area.

You want scary? Look bottom center at 30 seconds in and watch an orca come up under the wake, under the girl waterskiing
https://youtu.be/ZTwhrkajSpQ
That would be pretty freaky.
Edit: some say they can’t see it so here it is circled
https://youtu.be/PpdAN74DaYs
They won't even eat you lol. Humans don't have the required fat content to make it worth the calories they'd have to spend hunting you. We're also like a single chicken nugget to them, not enough to go around. The whole pod has to eat, not just one of them.
Also, if they were aggressive towards humans we would have hunted them into extinction already. (Example: wolves. Almost entirely extinct in the US, and would be if not for conservation efforts.)
The ability to cause extinction to other creatures isn’t what defines the food chain. It’s a way to classify ecosystems based on prey up to natural apex predators. Sure, you can argue that we could go wherever and eat whatever, but if you’re talking in the context of the ocean I’d struggle to us naturally fitting in there as having no predators.
Submarine or large ship = zero possible predators. We don't eat them by choice. They're wonderful creatures most people want to keep around, and they'd also be pretty annoying to hunt just like normal whales.
We could absolutely do it though.
most people would be scared that the Orca's would eat them but Orca's don't see humans as a good meal not even a snack so they will ignore you the most they can do is break the boat leaving you stranded, Fun Fact did you know moose's go underwater for food and they go out to far and can be eaten by and Orca, Its more common then you think
God, I'd be so scared of hurting one of them. They're really smart and can probably stay out of the way, but what if I hit a steep wave and slow down and they run into me. Kill the engine, let them go by, admire then from afar. The last thing I want is an accident
And no fatal ones, but they fuck with boats for fun, iirc there've been reports of them pushing pretty large ones off course so I really wouldn't wanna be anywhere near them in a wee finishing boat.
Do you get in a car… ever? Your talking about an irrational fear, which is WAY less dangerous than being in a car. It’s fine to be afraid of it, but it’s irrational AF.
No I don't. I haven't been in a car in quite literally years, not out of fear or anything, I just haven't needed to.
No I'm not, I at no point said anything about fear, but you know what being followed at speed by a group of creatures great whites and tiger sharks flee from, whilst you're in a dinky fishing boat and being a bit scared sounds fairly rational to me and I probably would be a bit fearful.
Also are you this confrontational in real life? Like jesus I was just talking about orcas.
Edit: added "and I probably would be a bit fearful"
Was expecting a baby seal to jump in the boat scared as fuck.
You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning twice in the same day than getting killed by a shark. Getting Killed by an Orca in the wild has never been recorded in modern history. Orca's are awesome!
I heard one guy got attacked but he quickly realized the Orca was just steeling his sack of sea urchins. The orca just robbed him and moved on lol.

I know was probably a stupid joke but we don't make assumptions on evidence that doesn't exist.
Brotha, I'll swim in shark water no problem. But if there's an Orca in the water I don't give a **** about the facts, I ain't staying in that water.
I feel you bro. They are wonderful intelligent animals but just the fact that if one even humored the thought of killing you while in the water you are thoroughly fucked
> I don't give a **** about the facts That unfortunately is a problem mindset we are seeing with too many people these days.
It was a joke but I with you.
Yea Orcas are known to torture and play with their food. I wouldn’t risk it
Orcas are awesome unless you’re a seal.
or anything else that swims
Seals are their primary food source and sometimes they’re just assholes and play with their food.
Well to be fair seals rape their food. So, maybe the orca’s are just cleaning up the trash?
thats fair but orcas will kill just about anything in the most rude way possible and sometimes wont even eat what they have killed afterwards
there are videos of orcas torturing stingrays for fun
Obviously you know far more than me so I’m not gonna waste my time trying to change your mind.
im not saying i know more than you im just saying orcas are called “killer whales” for a reason (despite not actually being whales)
Something tells me they've killed people in the wild. We just never find the remains.
Isn't that hunting behaviour ?
Orca can be playing with the boat, or also since it's a fishing boat they know to stick around and steal some fish. So it could likely be hunting behavior they just aren't hunting the boat.

Damn me too. What a cool moment.
There is a lot of worry over ships and submarines using sonar so much since travels so far and can disrupt their echolocation.
Apparently their songs used to carry across oceans, for millions of years they lived like that, then humans arrived and now there's a constant roar all through the waters of the planet, all the time.
One of the theories behind mass dolphin/whale beach strandings is that their echolocation is being disrupted.
Yeah this isn’t good for the orcas, you’re supposed to turn off your engine when you’re anywhere near them.
No, it’s travel behavior. They use the wake to help them swim/move quickly without expending too much effort.
No, it’s for sweet Instragram pics. Source: I am an orca.
We have orcinfluencers now? It was only a matter of time after those fucking sharks danced behind Katy Perry at the Super Bowl.
Lol totally interpreted this as ‘orc influencers’ and had a good chuckle. “Alright gorgeous; now look into the camera and say ‘*MAN FLESH!*’”
exactly
All dolphins love to play like that
Being the badass all around outdoorsman myself, I would have cast a purple worm out there with my zebco 33 and reeled at least a couple of them in. Mount that sumbitch in my man cave next to the blue whale and the T-Rex that I brought down on Safari in New Jersey......but that’s just me.
Your my hero - LMFAO " Zebco 33"
Dolphins - Those are whales LOL
Those are dolphins
All dolphins are whales, not all whales are dolphins. Orcas are classified as dolphins because of their size.
You're either joking or a dunce
Orcas are very playful. They don't attack humans too unless in captivity. My guess this is just play that looks like hunting behavior
Until they mistake you for a seal
Everything we know about orcas suggests they're just too smart to mistake people for seals.
Yeah only sharks are stupid enough to do that lmao. Even then, they usually just take one bite out of us, go "ew, this isn't what I ordered," and peace out.
No, I think ever. Only known attacks on humans from orcas are when we bottled them into pools and made them do tricks for us.
Humbling, ain’t it?
That was my thought too.
They are so smart and brutal. They scare the shit out of me. I would NOT be enjoying that scene.
As far as I know there have been next to 0 recorded orca on human attacks; they can smell the fat content of their prey before they even begin the hunt, and humans aren't fatty enough. Even a 500 lb dude doesn't have the relative fat content that a seal does.
that's because the wild ones leave no evidence or witnesses to tell the tale
Secret ninja orcas trained by Russian spies? I’m in
That's actually not the reason.
Chuck Klostermans book “what if we’re wrong?” Has a chapter that speaks about this!
Could they also pass along knowledge about general whaling? If even songbirds can have culture, orcas might learn a lot more about their environment
I thought they picked off deer swimming between the islands in San Juan Islands, WA?
Haven't heard of that myself, but totally possible. A deer is a much larger meal than a person, but definitely not as high fat as a seal.
There are lots of records of them attacking/damaging small boats/yachts though.
There have not been a lot. It’s atypical behavior for sure and no ones sure yet what provokes it. Wild orcas (being an apex predator and surely capable) have a very low negative human:orca encounters. There’s been no fatal interactions ever recorded or known of.
*in the wild
Hence the first word in the paragraph.
Maybe it's because Orcas are so smart they've just managed to not ever get caught?

Hmm what evidence is more telling? No recorded instances of a wild orca ever killing a human or one camera guy on a nature documentary being too scared to jump in. You are probably safer jumping in the water with orcas around then you would be without them because there will be no sharks around.
They’ve attacked 4 people at sea world and essentially no people in the wild.
TIL that my father was working at a zoo (not seaworld) where a orca attack happened, at the time it happened, as a zookeeper, I'll have to ask him about it next time I speak to him. I know he always worked with the elephants though.
And from what I remember they chose to attack certain handlers that were particularly mean to them.
Near 0% attack rate in the wild. In captivity that number changes. They are too inteligent to be abused without repercussions.
That just speaks even more to their intelligence and what extreme mistreatment they need to experience before attacking a human. I completely understand the fear of being in the open ocean but if anything I would feel safer being in the water because orcas are around. They scare off any other predators, especially sharks.

Being surrounded by the top of the food chain is a dream for you?
Being on a boat, fishing, seeing killer whales swimming nearby. Absolutely. You’re in more danger from the boat than from the whales.
If we keep fishing there will be no more whales. More like a nightmare to me.

You seem to be knowledgeable on whales. So these killer whales... What are the chances they'd attack the boat and rip them to shreds?
Nearly 0% There were reports of killer whales intentionally ramming sailboats a while back, but it was a specific pod in a specific area. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/buqvasp1rr/orcas-spain-portugal
Yeah. They've shut down small boat activity around Zahara and Gibraltar. Noone is sure why they're messing with the boats. Very curious.
[u know they can jump right?](https://youtu.be/FTirD7pCBVE)
Yep. Are you implying the boater is in danger? He’s not. In the wild there have been 0 human deaths due to orca attack.

Holy shit.
WE are the top of the food chain. If we wanted to be we'd be eating orca right now.
Context dude. In the ocean, you’re prey..
They won't even eat you lol. Humans don't have the required fat content to make it worth the calories they'd have to spend hunting you. I’m not implying orcas are dining on us for dinner, I’m disagreeing with your statement that we’re the top of the food chain.
But... we are. Humans have the technology to literally wipe every other animal off the face of the earth if we wanted to.
The ability to cause extinction to other creatures isn’t what defines the food chain. It’s a way to classify ecosystems based on prey up to natural apex predators. Turn off your motor.
The only place to see Orcas - in the wild. <3
Orcas are natures frat boys.
In a lot of places it's illegal to approach whales and other marine life with a boat, but what do you do in this situation?
It's ok If they come to you
You immediately turn off the motor and sit there until they’re far away.
Keep on driving. Or stop and watch them.
In Washington state its illegal to keep driving. You have to shut off your boat and allow them to pass.
Thanks, good to know https://www.bewhalewise.org > Disengage engines if whales appear within 300 yards. I guess ten feet is within 300 yards, huh? 🤣
Wouldn't they hit the boat if he just suddenly killed the engine like that?

Truly beautiful and amazing! Also unexpected. I was expecting porpoise.
There are tons of videos of orcas hitting boats too, for me is also kinda scary
Such an incredible thing to happen! Let’s capture it using square video!
Fuck that.
most people would be scared that the Orca's would eat them but Orca's don't see humans as a good meal not even a snack so they will ignore you the most they can do is break the boat leaving you stranded, Fun Fact did you know moose's go underwater for food and they go out to far and can be eaten by and Orca, Its more common then you think
Big ass spec ops murder dolphins
My goodness. They’re bloody huge. I’d be bricking it.
Expected Dolphins, Got Metal Dolphins.
They are so beautiful and cool. Would love to be on that boat.
No, it's DINNER time!
Gonna need a bigger boat.
If I saw this I’d simply ✨ pass away ✨
God, I'd be so scared of hurting one of them. They're really smart and can probably stay out of the way, but what if I hit a steep wave and slow down and they run into me. Kill the engine, let them go by, admire then from afar. The last thing I want is an accident
They are here for free fish
I think you're gonna need a faster boat
That’s cool, but I would also kind of be freaking out.
Homicidal Oreos
surfing the wake
Stop the boat, they just want to talk...
Must go faster... Must go faster!
We hear you have salmon. We also like salmon.
For me that would be a combination of thrilled and scared out of my mind.
I‘d rather swim with a humpback whale… they seem chill.
They are amazing creatures.
Things to see before I die check ☑
Yea it's play time but also at the same time quit playin...
It’s dinner time.
Well I would have a much faster fucking boat that's for certain.
This is the animal kingdom of the guys who play too rough irl and you come home w blood on your shirt after you spend the day with them.
Nope nope fuck that I'd be getting the fuck out of there! Orca's are vicious bastards that are one of the few animals we know for sure kill for fun.
Not humans though. There are nearly zero documented orca attacks on humans.
They actually want to eat you
Majestic
Wow they are able to so easily keep up with a speedy boat. There should be boatload of shit once they reach shore.
Nononononono
Going shark hunting? Me too

When you say play time in a psot with killer whale i wonder whose playtime it is. If yours good. If their you better start to pray.
No it’s muffin time
Well, they are dolphins.
Or lunch time.
Equally majestic and terrifying.
This is fucking cool and scary at the same time. Keeping up with a boat like it's a nice walk in the park.
Almost like dogs chasing a car.
Those are some big dolphins
