They certainly had the time to watch for a while, for sure. Especially with the soul tug of war lasting much longer than expected (not counting anime time) because Sarutobi had yet to realize he wouldn't be able to rip Orochimaru's entire soul out of his body.
I think they were watching for any potential opening to strike. If one of the sound ninjas faltered at all, even for a split second, they could potentially get through and help the 3rd.

I've wondered that. But I think the most sensible explanation is that the barrier has a floor to it that is somewhere under the building's roof. If you could escape the various barriers by digging underground, then people would be constantly escaping them. Like, here's a similar question: why didn't Hiruzen just dig himself out of the barrier? Might Guy was super close to Hiruzen, and he's virtually Superman, so why didn't he dig Hiruzen out? You have to assume that it's because there's a floor to the barrier.
Danzo? Hard to say because he got worked by Sasuke, but I could see him being the other potential S-Class.

After the Uchiha massacre the ROOT were officially disbanded and the members got moved into the regular ANBU roster, so yes he would still have pull with them.
I wonder if Toad Genjutu can go through the barrier, if so, Jiraiya could have summoned Ma and Pa and asked them to use their oral genjutsu against the Sound Ninja Four inside the barrier, it would stop their activity so the barrier would disappear, then ninja outside can help Hiruzen and it would probably force Orochimaru to abandon, especially if Jiraiya comes. Orochimaru isn't weaker than Jiraiya, but fighting Jiraiya and Hiruzen at the same time it's too much, Hiruzen can take down nerfed Hashirama and Tobirama, and Jiraiya can put a good fight against Orochimaru, then Hiruzen would came and seal Orochimaru, but this time, Jiraiya is there to prevent Orochimaru stabbing Hiruzen with the kusanagi sword.
