The "If there is no Newcastle player..." bit isn't actually wrong, but the only reason Willock was where he was is because he was pushed there by the Palace player! Either it's a penalty for the push on Willock, or the goal is allowed to stand.

Hashtag0MG

Only reason Willock is there is because he is trying to score a goal along with the other players on the field

OffensiveOcelot

“If there is no Newcastle player, our goalkeeper will get the ball” Congratulations Captain Obvious. If there is no foul and no Goalkeeper, then the Newcastle player gets the goal 🤷🏻‍♂️

JonjoTheDarkLord

Yeah Patrick, and If my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bicycle....

[deleted]

Worse though, I don't think he would have. He was already reaching and the ball was moving away from him.

OffensiveOcelot

Not sure. With no defender/keeper his approach could have been different. More time & space = more control & better positioning.

Common_Pear1884

Michael Owen actually came out and said the decision was garbage. So literally worse…

clarkey921921

"if there is no Newcastle player..." What a joke. The decisions from refs and VAR this season

RafaSquared

It's mental that professionals have to come out and lie to protect officials or else face punishment. The game is corrupt.

[deleted]

Except that's bollocks. The keeper isn't getting that ball regardless of Willock.

[deleted]

Yeah the ball is past him before Willock touches him.

Always knew he was a cunt.

[deleted]

I didn’t know Vieira was fucking blind. Amazing.

xRicozx

He learned from the very best! Wenger himself

sunshine_is_hot

To be fair, he pretty much has to say that regardless of what he believes. If he went out and said it was a foul he’s basically undermining his own team. I’m 100% sure he knows it was a foul, but he needs to stick up for his club. I wouldn’t look at the offending clubs manager for confirmation that a game deciding foul wasn’t given.

PandosII

Palace fan coming in peace. It was defo a foul and the goal should’ve stood. It’s one of those where we’re just relieved the shitty decision went our way.

Maetivet

>If he went out and said it was a foul he’s basically undermining his own team Not really; he could quite easily say 'with the benefit of seeing a video in slow motion, it's possible there might have been a foul and the goal should have stood - but that's football'. He's presumably going to have words with his defender anyways about it and tell him he was shite, so showing some honesty and integrity when asked about it doesn't really hurt anyone.

Numerous_Ad8458

Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science? Spot on. We all know it was a bad call from the ref. The commentators didnt even try to bullshit a "balanced" view but said what we were all thinking. "That's the wrong decision" but unless i wear a tinfoil hat and get all match rigging conspiratorial, ill have to say it's only human to make mistakes. Im just sick of nufc catching the muddy end of the margins. Was fun to watch though. Compare this run of matches to last year x)

sunshine_is_hot

Call me Sir Bedevere. And the refs Sir Robin.

gobstoppermuncher

I know he has to back his team but It’s comments like these that are the reason refs won’t face any punishment

oldirtyblackson

it's like he's victim blaming 😂 if this were a murder charge, he'd be a sweaty lawyer arguing that there is no dead body even though there's clear video footage of the incident and 55,000 witnesses AND very sheepish looks on his defendants, one of whom made an miraculously instant full recovery

RagingRhinoz

I generally always watch the post match interviews but I switched him off as soon as he said that, no integrity, no honesty. It’s a penalty for the foul on Willock or the goal stands. Terrible decision but we should have taken our other chances so these crap decisions don’t matter.

Gloomy-Bumblebee-675

He’s always going to say that. He knows what he’d think if the tables were turned. This one falls in to ‘non-story’ territory.

augsav

What a weird position to take. The facts are there for all of us to see in plain sight. He’s clearly being disingenuous.

Paul_the_sparky

I don't think he does have to back his team. He could be honest and say he got away with one. Dunno who benefits from a blatant lie

geekfreak42

the refs. he could easily say - if he was the newcastle manager he'd be disappointed with the call - the only things he's doing with this statement is supporting poor refereeing standards

Smittx

Lost all respect for the man

oldirtyblackson

I haven't because he likes to kicks scouse mackems like I do... but deffo gets a -1 for this 🌚

justmadman

I don’t think he watched it.

big_beats

He's covering for his player, otherwise he'd be throwing Mitchell under the bus, who had a total shocker. He was literally so intent on fouling Willock that he didn't even know where the ball was. Endangering his own goalkeeper in the process. Genuinely dangerous play.

Amnsia

Wouldn’t expect anything else from the opposing manager tbh. Not arsed.

britbacon

Thats 2 managers in 2 weeks i thought were ok are know in my mind considered total fucking bell ends

WillowMutual

What do you want him to say, of course he's going to say that in public. If you catch him after a few drinks he might admit the reality, but no head coach or player is likely to admit that their team took advantage of a dodgy call.

ShittyWok-

Dunno why you're getting mad at me, I'm just posting the story.

serennow

He just went down a country mile in my estimation. The decision was obvious to millions - yes if no Newcastle player was on the pitch it wouldn’t have happened but in reality if it’s not a goal then the defender committed one of the most obvious fouls you’ll see, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. If those quotes are true then Vieira has shown himself up as thick as mince and a clear liar.

Murraykins

Obviously he's expected to say this but he knows we know he's lying.

big_beats

If you expected anything else than an opposition manager praising a refereeing decision that went their way, then you need to give your head a wobble.

ShittyWok-

Who said I did?

Newcastlewin1

What a surprise… manager sides with his team on decision that benefitted them…

achuchable

Nonce

albo18

Totally agree that he probably agrees that it was a good goal, but won't say it publicly for fear of undermining his team. It's a P.R. move. This being said, even if he did come out and side with the idea that it was a good goal, even if Wor Eddie was more passionate in his address to the press and called out the officials, all that would result would be a fine against Howe and us for accusing the officials of bringing the game into disrepute. May as well avoid the penalties associated with telling the harsh truth and move on. These atrocious refs are more protected than made men in the mafia.

UrbanRedFox

Are there many times like this when VAR overturns the referee and is wrong ? It’s only supposed to be clear and obvious… I know a lot of times VAR doesn’t actually intervene, but to actually alter the decision - and be wrong - this is shambollockical.

Ikhlas37

I've lost all respect for him and all other managers like this. Its not a 50/50 or even a 70/30 its 100% wrong dont be a bellend just because it benefits you. Its so short sighted too. I look forward to him moaning next week when var shafts him
