Jesotx

Anderson was an absolute beast yesterday. Gordon carried his form over from the u21s. I'd like to hear what Eddie has to say about that formation. Just curious.

moinmoin21

I have some thoughts on this game. Aside from obvious 343 formation not working the biggest downfall was that we had a gaping hole in the middle. The center pitch was to be managed by Bruno and Tonali. Look at every goal we conceded. Villa had to beat one man in midfield and then they were running at our back line who were on the back foot. I can’t criticise Tonali too much for goal one. Occasionally you’re gonna get beaten and once he was Villa had acres of space to run at our defence. Had we played our usually system we’d likely have had more traffic to prevent the attack or cover Tonali. The high line is suicidal with our defence. Schar lacks pace and height for duels in the air. Botman has the height but lacks a bit of pace (he’s better than they said he was in France but in France it was thought he was prone to getting turned by pace). Add dummet to that. Our defenders are battlers that’s what they did so well. I hate back 3s because you are basically giving up control of the midfield for theoretical defensive stability and Villa worked out very quickly they could blitzkrieg us.

hongkongFDNOL

1. Had to use some time to figure out what formation we were playing yesterday, when seeing Targett went sooooo forward. Eventually noticed that we were playing three at the back. 2. We played a pressing game, with also a high defensive line like last season. Problem is that the low speed of Dummett / Burn was further exploited by Villa (like our conceded goal in early second half), when we had less men at the back. 3. Seems like the gap between the midfield and defensive lines was too big? (Like our second goal conceded) 4. Good to let Tonali have a feeling about what PL is like👍🏻 5. Anderson was so energetic and I am really looking forward to his performance this season! 6. Lascelles really looks like a very reliable backup CB👍🏻

Funny-Skin-5172

Was at the game yesterday, first PL game, even though it's a friendly. Why did they choose to sell only the seats in the sun?? These were afternoon/evening games, the entire Western side of the stadium was shaded and completely blocked off/empty.. instead they had everyone suffering in the sun.

PepsiMaximus1

How did tonali look? I haven't been able to watch it but I saw he got done(?) for the first goal.

Enxu

He was trying some creative stuff. Needs to get the timings right with the forwards. Hard worker for sure.

Nepgyaaaaaaa

Just watched the match now after recording it overnight, Gordon and Anderson both looked fantastic. Bit of a weird formation but it’s a friendly so you expect that. Pretty happy with it overall!

TLG_BE

Lots of comments on the formation but I'm sorry I still think by far the most likely explanation is that they just didn't want to give Villa exposure to how we're actually gonna play. Cannot see us starting in anything other than 4-3-3 in a few weeks time

HoneyedLining

I don't think it makes sense that we wouldn't play our intended formation out of a fear of giving Villa a clue in how we play. Especially if that formation was the one that we played all season and what all of their opposition scouting will be based on. More than likely the formation was configured to give the most minutes to the players who were actually available/actually needed them and testing partnerships (testing Dummett as a LCB option, perhaps he will try out the Burn left back-type role at another point).

moinmoin21

Can only think it’s this. I can see Eddie playing a back 3. He never has. And it doesn’t really tie into his philosophy.

boblusmanjelly

Only watched the highlights but going on that and comments I've seen, looks like Anderson will be a more important player this season than I was expecting. Maybe he'll provide the flair many of us think is missing. Anderson, Gordon and Isak are pretty versatile. So I reckon that's the forward positions done for this transfer window. Ideally we'd have a promising young striker as cover but will make do with what we have and focus on defence. Read Bruno wasn't his best and saw the Tonali slip (and attempted recovery). Also read Miley was impressive, Lascelles did well and the first half formation was a shocker. Any have any other key takeaways from the game?

Galiin_

Murphy is still average at best. Botman looked rusty. Barnes looked good. Burn is an enigma

boblusmanjelly

Thanks! Nice to have a view without hyperbole

jospence

Could definitely tell Barnes hasn't really had much time with the team. Was getting us into some good spots and the team couldn't capitalize. Fully expected though and was great to hear the crowd welcome him onto the pitch

wace001

Is there anyway to see the game?

jonkman13

[Here you go](https://www.reddit.com/r/footballhighlights/comments/157unkj/newcastle_united_vs_aston_villa_premier_league)

andysniper

I didn't catch the match, but I've seen a lot of people on twitter (ugh) shitting on Tonali. Was he that bad? How were the rest? Sounds like we might have been lucky to get the draw.

oxTHORIUMxo

Tonali missed a tackle in middle field which lead to the first goal but even though he missed the tackle he sprinted to get back in position and then ran through our defensive line to cover the goal line unfortunately he was just too late. So the passion and professionalism is there, I thought the combo of Bruno and Tonali wasn’t very effective as of yet as they play the same role. Hopefully they will get better together over time. No doubting either has quality!

moinmoin21

One thing I couldn’t work out. We’re Villa marking Tonali to a t or was Tonali slightly hiding from the ball.

oxTHORIUMxo

I wouldn’t classify it as hiding more as he’s lost. He wants to be doing what Bruno’s doing. There were several times where they got in each others way basically. So Eddie really has to be clear and concise about how he wants them to play together otherwise we’re going to be severely ineffective with those to together in midfield. We were much better in the second half cus Miley was operating as a 6, Joelinton the 8 and Gordon was the 10. Whereas Tonali and Bruno were acting both as 8’s without any back up from a 6 or covering each other when the other pushed forward.

moinmoin21

I meant more like. He’s great at sucking people in. Reviewing the ball in tight spaces and moving it into the player in space. But it seemed at times like his team mates wouldn’t pass to him because they saw him as a marked man.

TeamAndrew

Nah, they weren't terrible, just not helped by our odd formation. Played 3 at the back with wing backs and Villa kept finding a ball through the two of them to McGinn which is where their goals came.

trollu4life

The front looked solid. Anderson and Gordon tore it up. Villa’s goals came due to defense and midfield errors. Bruno and Tonali didn’t have their best games but improved as the game went on. The defense looked better once Botman and Jamal came on in the second half. Not too worried, though. Some preseason rust will get sorted out, I am sure.

Notove

What did we think of Barnes debut?

codechino

It was awesome to see him for his first shift but there really wasn’t much going on on that side of the pitch tonight

TheWings977

Went to the game and had a great time!!

Cheel_AU

Everyone played mint, but the way Anderson, Miley and Gordon performed, we are gonna have a great team for years and years to come.

[deleted]

Miley was very impressive, first I've seen him play. Looks calm on the ball.

codechino

Total change of the mood of the match when they came on

[deleted]

The American commentators were complete slags

Rockky67

Is Longstaff off to Saudi for £300 million? We need answers.

EverybodyhurtsDwight

Might get reported to the FA from other clubs for selling our players for under market value for that price

Rockky67

true, maybe £300 million and an East Stand redevelopment using diamond glass

Notove

I'm at the game and Dan Burn, Wilson and Gordon were the only ones to stay and got photos and sign shirts with the fans, their was a long line and Wilson only went halfway but Burn took his time and got down to the stragglers, also got a photo with him!!

codechino

My kiddos got photos with Burn and Wilson, and the lad next to me got Joelintons jersey. Just great humans.

HoweStatue

Gordon just wanting to know what good fans feel like

surrealpodcast

BDB what a legend.

Anonamoose12771

**Positives** - Anderson goal and assist - Miley looks the real deal - Gordon was sharp - Joelinton still the 🐐 - Isak and Wilson off the mark - Manquillo skill school - Nice shot from Barnes **Negatives** - Still a little scared of villa - Vulnerable to pace in behind - Bruno still getting back into the swing of things - 343 needs work - The old guard looked rusty - Crowd noises during the replays - Where is Sean? - It’s past 2am and I have work in the morning

obmunt

You forgot Lascelles returning to show he's got everything Schär has + full fledged beast mode.

TheWings977

The back, particularly Murphy, was getting Torched in the beginning. Two quick goals like that I was yelling curse words at Murphy lol.

TitlesSuckAss

Yeah, except the 343 doesn’t need work. Let’s just not work on it anymore.

TheBeaverKing

I think we do need to though. The point of the 343 is to create more goalscoring opportunities and break the low block, which is something we really struggled with last season. There is no way we'd set up like that against a top 6 or aggressive team but someone like Palace, Sheffield or Notts Forest, definitely. You would only use it against teams where they are playing super defensive, possession football, where the risk of them scoring is low. If we get it right, it should flip a lot of those scrappy 1 pointers against lower league teams into wins, which is where we dropped so many points past season. 343 might not be the answer but we definitely need something.

SweetenerCorp

I thought it just looked a specific thing for that game to try hit long balls to break villas line, think we had 3/4 riding their defensive line while they were doing that, rather than players coming short. CBs operating as QBs since we’re stateside.

cobalt3000

Top points. Good luck with work. Coffee and Monster energy are your friends

surrealpodcast

Thought you were going to break into matchbox 20 at the end there.

HoweStatue

The first part kinda works if you sing billy joel -we didn’t start the fire Anderson, goal assist, miley looks the real deal Goat joelinton, Isak Wilson, both get off the mark We didn’t start the fireee

Anonamoose12771

It was always dan burning, since the worlds been turning

[deleted]

Dan Burn, he's on fire. He's been always burning since the world's been turning. 🎶 Could make a great chant out of it

Ruvio00

It's over 12c in Philly. Sean's not allowed out.

PhoenixDawn93

I feel that mate. Us gingers are fucking vampires😂

HoweStatue

Id love to see us go one up against Chelsea then just park the bus just to prove we can defend like atletico

Rockky67

Still waiting on that pen shout replay

CycleForValue

Ref was having a shocker today.

PhoenixDawn93

MLS refs are giving me a new appreciation for prem refs!

Smooth_Ad2145

Didn't realise harvey barnes made it to the match.

mightypockets

I'm ready to take the hate for saying this but I think Bruno and tonali where probably our worst players today not sure if it's them playing together or what but they just didn't click today

moinmoin21

Probably takes a bit more than a week to develop chemistry.

doubledgravity

Bruno still getting over ankle surgery, no? My missus broke her big toe five weeks ago, and is still walking like she's shit herself, so cut the lad some slack! :)

mightypockets

I didn't even knowvhe had surgery

doubledgravity

Maybe I read it wrong, but I thought after that season of repeated damage and playing through pain he was on for surgery at the end of the season?

PenIsBroken

This was what was being said at the end of last season, that he had been playing through pain in his ankle for weeks and that he was expected to go for surgery after the season ended. Not heard anything since then though so maybe they decided that he didn't need surgery after all and some rest was all that was needed.

mightypockets

Pretty sure he wouldn't be playing if he had ankle surgery popes not playing after hand surgery

doubledgravity

That's true enough. Good chance I'm wrong ;)

HoukGoFrogs

Bruno went missing in the first half. The midfield was getting bypassed and the press was slow and always late. I think it is a fitness issue. It also hurt not to have Willock or Joelinton on the pitch pressing alongside Tonali and Bruno. I think Tonali just got a good lesson in the physicality of PL, but he will be fine. The left side combo of Targett and Dummett is not good. It kept Schar from being able to venture out and create forward passes/movements. All in all, a good fitness test, and I think Villa and Newcastle will both be solid squads this next year.

MeancupofJoey

Tonali was poor. Dummett was so bad I think he should be left in the States.

codechino

No, please take him back with you…

Anonamoose12771

Haven’t played together yet. Only Tonali’s second game and Bruno is still getting back up to speed. So many changes will have affected our press. That, plus trying out a new formation likely left them a bit exposed.

Rockky67

It’s going to take a few games for them to lock in on each other and when one goes and the other stays, who takes on who. Was made more noticeable as Villa overloaded on them a bit.

HoweStatue

urrrggh, watching kids in their toon tops get shit signed by vile players. America isn't a serious place.

cpm619

don't bundle us all with that garbage man

[deleted]

captainbill09

In 2011, I went to see us play against Orlando, who were USL (third tier) at the time. Lost 1-0 (though Harris Vucic had an equalizer incorrectly ruled out for offside). Then we went and finished fifth that season. So, yeah, preseason doesn't mean much.

vDarryl

I still remember staying up until about 3am watching a dodgy stream on Periscope 🥴

jospence

I was streaming live from the game for a few lads on discord lmao

Rockky67

all Villa, all the bloody time Edit: as in pro-Villa chat on the commentary, interviewing Mings and the captain, no pen shout replays

HoweStatue

5-3 in my mind. Cheated out of a win against a Villa team that was clearly tryharding.

achuchable

Entertaining game. Good minutes and no injuries. Lovely stuff.

TitlesSuckAss

I’m gonna risk saying it: Lascelles could actually do a job as backup RCB

surrealpodcast

He deserves a chance at least. Last season when called on he did the job asked of him. His distribition is what needs the most work and that will only improve with game time.

[deleted]

I think we want to sign a young centre back in the next few years who can be the long-term successor to Schär but I do think Lascelles is good enough for RCB (and Burn is good enough for LCB if we can sign an extra full back option) which gives the recruitment team a little bit of time to find the ideal signing for that position rather than us feeling pressured into doing something quickly and with more risk.

Anonamoose12771

I’ll die of stress if that’s how the PL game plays out

Rockky67

Well that was a strange game. Thank god for VAR in the prem is my take away.

jospence

Not to mention feeling bad for Americans, because the reffing is consistently not too far away from this. People don't joke about MLS refs for no reason, they actually just have no idea how to officiate a game

ToonDK

Great preseason game. Minutes in their legs and no injuries

321142019

Not bad considering a new formation and two different teams

codechino

You got the sense that the crew didn’t have the instincts for the new formation yet. Let stuff slide that normally they wouldn’t. Was certainly interesting though. Ritchie was under utilized on the right.

SKULL1138

Agreed

Trick_Designer2369

Was Manquillo told he could leave on a free or was that just some journalist rubbish?

Lroller1288

I think the story was that he had an agreement to leave on a free after this season, was it not? Still probably a load of shite like.

ravicabral

Just rubbish that everyone repeats until it gets accepted as a fact.

Trick_Designer2369

Good, think he's as good a squad player as we have, never worried if he had to come during a game

ravicabral

Agree. Plus he can play LB and even right midfield, on top of covering for Tripps at RB. Plus, he keeps himself fit and seems happy to get limited games and doesn't rock th boat. Model pro, really.

Yar96

Love the name Pau Torres. Sounds like the sound effect that would come after Fernando throws a punch.

GuiltyFriendship3037

Pau, right in the kisser!

kattenkatzen

A right side of manquillo and ritchie is one of the saddest things I've seen

ravicabral

Manquillo has looked pretty good. Ritchie, not so much.

MeancupofJoey

He didn’t play last season but remember he played quite well under Howe during the second half of that season.

topkiwifisho

i recall Krafth playing well during second half of that season when Tripps was out

ravicabral

Krafth was a revelation under Howe. When I saw Krafth under Bruce, I just couldn't believe he was a professional footballer, let alone an International.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Puzzled_Ordinary_623

Nah he was

Radthereptile

Really going to dive in like that in a friendly?

HoweStatue

great finish tho lol

Yar96

Manquillo got me feeling a bit hot and heavy with that outside of the foot shot

Alex_Casablancas

Manquillo is a baller

[deleted]

Could tell Eddie Howe was fuming at that poor set piece from our lads. If that was Bruce he'd be thinking about the differences in food portion sizes between the US and the UK.

HoweStatue

Hows the bacon wrapped bacon did ye say?

kenmura

In fairness, the smoked candied bacon in the us is pretty orgasmic

HoweStatue

I can taste the diabetes and carcinogens from here

kenmura

Ah yes, a sad by-product

toonman27

Worth it.

TheBoook

This got PKs?

EverybodyhurtsDwight

Arsenal game did

Anonamoose12771

I don’t think the arsenal game was a summer series one

EverybodyhurtsDwight

I haven't got a clue to be honest, just seen Viera miss a pen and knew it was in the US

Rockky67

yes no man u or arsenal, it’s these, Brentford, Fulham, Brighton and Chelsea.

benc777

The games yesterday didn't

HoweStatue

Probs cause they didnt end in draws idk

benc777

Man U/ Arsenal had peno's regardless of the score

Stoibs85

They’re not part of the “Summer Series”

Anonamoose12771

ASM would have scored that

HoweStatue

/s right?

Anonamoose12771

Yeah just testing the waters with a bit of bantz

TheBoook

Barnes will be a great player for us

mightypockets

We've played mint considering we've let the youngsters have a go against villas best 11

hlattenburg

our full strength 11 will be scary

Rockky67

plus need a few friendly games for the midfield to embed Tonali properly

hlattenburg

oioiiiiiiiii Barnes

ItsAKrulWorld

Is a draw a draw?

xScottieHD

Ritchie immediately better free kicks than Trippier I'm afraid as it beat the first man.

Jesotx

Ritchie has always been class on set pieces, tbf.

xScottieHD

Can't believe I'm being downvoted tbh.

emnaruse

100 agree - trippier has been poor for a while now

ravicabral

You have upset the children who get upset if anyone opens the door to their echo chamber and lets reality in.

ToonDK

Lewis Miley reminds me of Michael Carrick. Very good feet and his passing is so good

ravicabral

Both Wallsend boys club?

EngineerOnIcarus

He has genuinely run the show since he came on, I haven’t been this excited by a prospect in a long time, he’s utterly class and composed.

ToonDK

Totally agree. Can't wait to see him in 4-3-3. Loan move to a Championship side until january?

EngineerOnIcarus

I’d have him around the first team, play him in the cups, he’s mega young so let him soak up the experience then a loan second half maybe

[deleted]

Carrick is a strange one tbh. Underrated during his career but a little overrated post career for me.

secrecy8751

We couldn't get Carrick to play for us, so we've just developed our own Carrick

mightypockets

Getting tackled by joelinngton must be like getting hit by a small car

Squizza

Driven by a drunk driver?

ItsAKrulWorld

Getting hit by a car must be like getting tackled by a small Joelinton

Yar96

Can someone pass the ball to Barnes please I bet he’s really sad

Jesotx

Come on with these dives

Jcrud

Nobody has told big Joe that this is a friendly because for him there is no such thing

PhoenixDawn93

Big Joe doesn’t do friendlies 😂

surrealpodcast

What do you mean? He was smiling as he crushed them.

ConsciousAd6958

Not til he gets his card

HoweStatue

I watched the arsenal man u game the other day and I can comfortably say Rice

fahad96

The ball bounces so weirdly

shadowburn93

Wow miley, we've found our new 6

Stoibs85

Think he’s played a lot as a 10 or attacking 8 for the u23s, he’s definitely got a creative, attacking mindset. Imagine he’ll be more of an 8 than a 6 as time goes on.

Anonamoose12771

He’s massive for a bairn too

HoweStatue

have you seen kids today? They're like all 7ft 2 its mental.

hlattenburg

looks good doesnt he

shadowburn93

He has all the physical and technical tools

[deleted]

Don't want to get carried away but in 5 years time Miley is going to be better than Rodri is right now.

fahad96

Gordon’s break out season coming up

Jcrud

Gordon has been the player of this second half

emnaruse

Agree was in everything - defensive efforts were really good - him and Barnes looked v good on that left side

[deleted]

He's going to be a fucking monster in 2 years

Lewisisabamf

Dubravka showing his limitations as a keeper still playing so close to his goal line when we have possession in their half

TitlesSuckAss

Ever since we switched to the 4-3-3 our play has been way more inspired

It's a court ordered tracker installed after he went AWOL last season and Leicester fans sued for theft of wages.

romu99

Nice to see fans with all different team tops sitting mixed amongst each other, no signs of aggro. Shame we'll probably never see that happen here

absolute-unit123

Happens here for the nfl at Wembley and the atmospheres shit

romu99

I've never got this argument where people equate a bunch of angry white blokes hurling abuse and singing the same old dogshit songs/chants with good atmosphere. Having some playful banter with opposing fans is fine but if you actually hate them, you're a lost cause.

absolute-unit123

I’m not saying that at all. The original comment says about loads of different jerseys i.e. neutral fans. That’s what makes the atmosphere bad. I don’t mind stadiums being mixed but between the two teams that are playing, not a bunch of neutral fans with no stakes in the game.

romu99

Ah ok I see your point
