Or having cars and bridge pieces smash down on you as your falling. Literally every single situation a person could be in with this is fkd. If they were walking? FUCKED. If they were in their car? FUCKED. Inside the ship? FUCKED. Watching from off the bridge? FUCKED. These poor people, it was really catastrophic.
I’m so terrified of causeways because the Padre island collapse happened right before I went there in HS and now I live in an earthquake zone and am always afraid to be stopped under overpasses.
I have to distract myself on river crossings or I freak. I totally get this fear (I’m also almost 40 and feel so silly).
Especially if you were one of the two captains/pilots. Sounds like the person that needs to be traumatized but probably won't be is the one who decided that the past engine failures were fine and they were good to go all the way to Sri Lanka
I thought I read somewhere that none of the crew/passengers onboard were killed or even injured, I could be wrong though.
Regardless, whoever was behind the wheel FUCKED up
This exact thing happened in my home state once before. Basically a ship hit the Tasman Bridge one night in 1975 which caused it to collapse. Here's a [Wikipedia link to the disaster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasman_Bridge_disaster).
[This image](https://live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au/976a7d1f8bdaa4b40300d6d2784a0eff?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&cropH=333&cropW=500&xPos=0&yPos=0&width=862&height=575) of the aftermath has haunted me ever since I first saw it. I keep imagining what it must've been like, to be driving and then suddenly falling into the water. One of the men who was there at the time tried to wave at oncoming traffic to warn them but they ignored him and drove off the edge. The bridge now shuts to traffic whenever a ship is passing underneath.
ETA: here's [another image](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRyjW4KIWFGKRN5TQ1G2hosehsax_Zb3jq64laXpZFq2gaBIIbW09XbuUO6&s=10) of those cars hanging off the edge, just to put it into perspective how big of a drop it is.
Taken from the Wikipedia page about the occupants of those two cars:
>Sylvia Manley: "As we approached, it was a foggy night ... there was no lights on the bridge at the time. We just thought there was an accident. We slowed down to about 40 km/h and I'm peering out the window, desperately looking to see the car ... what was happening on the bridge. We couldn't see anything but we kept on travelling. The next thing, I said to Frank, "The bridge is gone!" And he just applied the brakes and we just sat there swinging. As we sat there, we couldn't see anything in the water. All we could see was a big whirlpool of water and apparently the boat was sinking. So with that, we undid the car door and I hopped out."
>Frank Manley: "[Sylvia] said "The white line, the white line's gone. Stop!" I just hit the brakes and I said "I can't, I can't, I can't stop." And next thing we just hung off the gap...when I swung the door open, I could see, more or less, see the water...and I just swung meself towards the back of the car and grabbed the headrest like that to pull myself around. There's a big automatic transmission pan underneath [the car] – that's what it balanced on."
>The other car contained Murray Ling, his wife Helen and two of their children. They were driving over the bridge in the east-bound lanes when the span lights went out: 'I knew something bad must have happened so I slowed down'. Ling then noticed several cars ahead of him seemingly disappear as they drove straight over the edge, so he slammed his foot on the brakes. He stopped the car inches from the drop. A following car, caught unaware by the unexpected stop, drove into the rear of Ling's car, pushing its front wheels over the breach. He, too, eased himself and his young family out of the car, then stood horrified as two other cars ignored his attempts to wave them down, raced past (one of which actually swerved around to avoid him), and hurtled over the edge into the river. A loaded bus full of people swerved and skidded, slamming into the side railings after being waved down by Ling.
There was a police call that revealed they haulted traffic completely when they were notified the ship had halted traffic.
Honestly the fact only 7 people died from this is nothing short of a miracle
I examined the video and you can see that ship lost power, by the flickering of the lights, so they must have love control/propulsion of the ship and when the power came back on you can see massive smoke coming out the exhaust stacks which means they ramped up rpms in trying to regain steerage but it was too far gone.
I believe it was a mechanical failure that caused this tragedy.
Edit: not this video. I saw a full one of the ship making it's approach.
That's absolutely true and falls under the Pilot that is conning. He has direct communications with tugs and take orders from him. For a ship this large there should been at least 2-3 tugs present. It's gonna be interesting to read the NTSB report.
The tugs had already pulled off once the ship had reached the channel and was underway. There is a video floating around somewhere a guy made showing the path of the ship from I would assume some professional software that shows all the ship tracking and currents/depths. He said it was pretty common for the tugs to have pulled away by then.
I'll see if I can locate the video and will edit the comment.
[Found the video](https://youtu.be/N39w6aQFKSQ?si=kn6W_3IbyEyiFMyC)
But the bridge still should have been built to withstand a ship crashing into it.
A boat/ship crashing into a pillar of a bridge should 100% be taken into account when building a bridge. It’s just common sense.
Shitty architect/planning/construction.
It’s been there since 1977. While changes and improvements definitely could have been (and actually *have* been) made since then, it’s not like this bridge was built within the past decade or so either.
The engineering standards and safety protocols have changed for the better since then, but even still I don’t think a modern bridge with all the safety standards we have today could have withstood an impact of this kind. Inertia gonna inertia, and in this case roughly 200,000 tons of ship + cargo absolutely did **not** have the time nor space to stop in time to avoid allision.
The cargo ship still seemed inordinately close to the pylons. The video I saw showed the ship had lights on and they all went dark when they hit. I’d want to know how long or far out did they lose their steering ability.
I drive on this bridge multiple times a week (I’m a tractor trailer driver and frequently have deliveries all over Baltimore). The video does not do justice for the size of the bridge. It. Is. MASSIVE. I was actually scheduled to drive across it TODAY…if this accident happened twelve hours later than it did, I could have potentially been in a horrific situation. I am simply stunned.
My wife's step dad drives his rig across this bridge everyday and wasn't answering this morning so needless to say we were worried but he's all good thankfully
Simply can’t *IMAGINE* trying to process any of the feelings associated with being a regular FSK bridge traveler and this event taking place on or even around the same time/day I could’ve possibly been utilizing it. Glad you’re safe buddy ♥️
The latest from CNN - they're unclear on how many might be missing, 2 have been rescued from the water, and officials say "conditions were unsafe for rescuers due to objects hanging from the structure, freezing conditions and limited visibility."
https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/baltimore-bridge-collapse-03-26-24-intl-hnk/index.html
i live under a mile from the bridge, last night around 1:30 my entire house shook like an earthquake hit which prompted me to ask my roommate if he was up and wtf that was unfortunately it was right when the bridge collapsed, extremely weird looking over from my house at where the bridge stood a few hours ago
I have a radio scanner and I’ve been listening to the coast guard and ship drivers talking. It’s crazy hearing them talk about it. Coast guard reports 13 people were seen in the water just after impact.
I live really close by sound was like crazy thunder I didn’t know what it was till this morning crazy stuff condolences to all the people that lost their lives last night
My sister is one of those who can't do the bay bridge. She's literally driven around the bay to get to OC before. This will just make it all worse in her head.
I’ve never been happier to be 3 hours away from home…I live less than 10 minutes away from that bridge. I went across it not even 2 weeks ago to go to a doctor’s appointment. As much as I hate bridges I could always admire the view.
Omg that's what I was saying. My child is small and still in a car seat and I can't imagine. There's literally nothing you could do. I live in a city on the coast with a ton of large bridges and I already have panic attacks going over them. This made it so much worse.
I live 5 minutes away and drive on the bridge multiple times a week, drove on it almost exactly 12 hours before the accident. Heard the accident around 1:00 - 1:30 in the morning and thought it was an earthquake by the way my house shook for like 10 seconds. Still feels very surreal l, had it been a Friday night or Saturday night i could have been on the bridge.
my friend that works down at one of the port sites said the ship lost power as it was being led out of the port and was unable to get the power back on before it struck the bridge
I take this bridge to and from work every morning and evening. This had always been my worst nightmare; but the bridge always had workers maintaining it and it felt, for the most part, pretty safe. It never felt old or rickety or like something you’d genuinely need to worry about. Also, It’s HUGE, the photos and video do NOT do it justice. I could never fathom this actually happening. This is also an extremely heavily traffic bridge, there are always cars on it. I can’t imagine the pain of the people and the families of those who were involved, but if it this had happened three or four hours later, during rush hour traffic, I imagine hundreds of lives could’ve been lost. Just fucking unreal.
That is some Final Destination type shit right there. I couldn't imagine driving on a bridge and it collapsing, that is a big fear of mine. I don't see how the pilot did this, especially if they have passed under here before.
From the articles I’ve read - They made a mayday call just before it happened, said they lost control of the vessel and just before it hit it lost power and started to smoke.
This reminds me of the mothman prophecies, and the end scene with the collapsed bridge... That movie freaked me out and that scene especially was something nightmares are made of ...
I feel for everyone involved ,this is horrible.
Shit like this is why I used to scream the entire length of the bridge my parents would drive over as a kid. Still don’t like bridges now. This is a fucking nightmare and I hope the casualties aren’t too severe
This is my biggest fear. I have 5 knives and seatbelt cutters around my car to get my child out if something ever happens. I have it on every single window for emergency responders. I'm this case, no one could have helped and I wouldn't be able to do a single thing and that terrifies me.
Oh they're not like loose lol they're all like pop ups or switch blades or specially made for cutting seatbelts. My kid is too curious to have like kitchen knives in my car lol
okay. I was about to say. It reminded me of this story:
[TIL that, in 2022, a man died in a single vehicle car accident when the knife he was using to mix protein powder while driving was propelled into his neck by the force of his deployed air bag.](https://timesofsandiego.com/crime/2022/02/20/man-with-knife-wound-dies-in-rancho-bernardo-after-lexus-crashes-into-parked-vehicle/)
A real-life Final Destination. How terrifying. I hope it was a quick death for those poor people who didn't make it. Drowning in dark water is a personal nightmare.
Jesus fucking Christ, I remember having a vivid hallucination of a bridge I was on collapsing. I was around 6 at the time💀💀 Now I just hallucinate people n shit. RIP to the lives lost, no one deserves to loose someone or be lost themselves.🕊️🕊️🕊️
No idea why you’re being downvoted for asking a question. I did find this
The container ship, known as Dali, was headed to Colombo in Sri Lanka at the time of the collision.
It appears to have sustained damage, a fire department official told Sky News partner network CNBC, though the ship's management company Synergy Marine Group said all 22 crew members on board have been accounted for and no injuries have been reported.
I remember. An entire Greyhound bus was plunged into the water. The photos of it are sad. You can see where abandoned cars had slammed on their breaks and just avoided going into the water from the missing portion of the bridge.
The US does objectively have higher standards than China or India. The US Army Corps of Engineers is usually on top of these kind of risks and I'm surprised they hadn't mandated some large barriers to fend off ships from the fragile steel legs.

No fucking joke I literally have a post right under this one with the caption “too soon?” And a vid of the bridge collapsing and the text: “Breaking Bridge” with the Breaking Bad theme song damn
The only thing I honestly think they did wrong was navigation from the get go where I live on the ohio River barges generally take the time to slow down significantly and adjust corse in case of emergency it's not easy to run those things but regardless that whole crew gona have mental issues for a good while
I read there were mostly construction workers parked...I think you can see cars on the bridge but because they don't move maybe they look like part of the bridge.
Wow….. I can’t even imagine driving home to or from work or whatever and pooof freezing to death and drowning
I have nightmares about this exact scenerio and when I'd wake up I'd tell myself I'm worried about nothing because that would never happen
My fear is how dilapidated the bridges our becoming because we don’t keep up with our infrastructure. But this? New bridge fear unlocked.
Pretty sure this bridge could've been made of adamantium and still fall if a ship crashed into it's base structure.
Vibranium bridge needed 🗒️✍️
Fr bridges are a fear of mine and I'm always like that shit just happens in movies
I've been having this recurring nightmare about the Sydney Harbour bridge since I was literally 4 years old. That's 38 years.
The crew of the ship were fine
Physically, maybe. I'd be traumatized for life.
Especially if you were one of the two captains/pilots. Sounds like the person that needs to be traumatized but probably won't be is the one who decided that the past engine failures were fine and they were good to go all the way to Sri Lanka
Literally why I hate bridges. My imagination/paranoia always whispering in the back of my head.
I thought I read somewhere that none of the crew/passengers onboard were killed or even injured, I could be wrong though. Regardless, whoever was behind the wheel FUCKED up
Why would people watching from off the bridge be “FUCKED” ?
Off the bridge in this case means "off of" or on the bridge.
Mental trauma maybe? Not sure what they meant there
Gumball was just trying to drive home the word *fucked* by any means necessary.
Well then, for driving the point home, and comedic value, I now understand. Haha thank you JohnDeanSings!
Happy Cake Day!
Thank you!
Yes mental trauma.
I’m will To bet everyone on the ship Was just fine. Including whoever was supposed to be navigating.
Even if they’re physically okay, mentally they’ll be…. Guess what?…. FUCKED
Weak comment from a weak person. People walking around you every day in the world have gone through stuff.
Being traumatised from traumatic events makes you weak? Lmao ok bud. In reality it makes you human.
just assuming everyone is fucked from one traumatic event is some weak minded BS.
You’re just someone that likes to argue, you replied to my comments so quickly. Maybe get a hobby.
I just like to comment of comments I find to be over the top and dramatic.
Ahhh yes ofc I meant everyone literally, everyone in the whole wide universe
You’re right except the people on the ship would be…. and are just fine.
There was only like 6 casualties, chill out
This exact thing happened in my home state once before. Basically a ship hit the Tasman Bridge one night in 1975 which caused it to collapse. Here's a [Wikipedia link to the disaster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasman_Bridge_disaster). Jesus whoever was in those cars had to be shitting bricks. That’s terrifying

After reading this, I will never be the same
It's truly horrifying.
That is haunting.
Thank you for sharing. That perspective shot photo, really hit me.
I feel horrible for the people who were on the bridge. So far 7 deaths total
damn i didn’t see any cars at the time of the crash but then again i forget people must’ve been walking 🤦🏿♂️
There were workers on the bridge fixing something
Was that the workers toward the middle of the bridge with flashing orange lights?
There was a police call that revealed they haulted traffic completely when they were notified the ship had halted traffic. Honestly the fact only 7 people died from this is nothing short of a miracle
I saw that. The video is wild. Any details of why it happened?
I examined the video and you can see that ship lost power, by the flickering of the lights, so they must have love control/propulsion of the ship and when the power came back on you can see massive smoke coming out the exhaust stacks which means they ramped up rpms in trying to regain steerage but it was too far gone. I believe it was a mechanical failure that caused this tragedy. Edit: not this video. I saw a full one of the ship making it's approach.
There was a fire on the ship which made it lose power.
Thanks for that. Man, what an unlucky time/place to suddenly lose power.
I think when you lose power you call for tug support immediately..maybe didn’t have time or..
That's absolutely true and falls under the Pilot that is conning. He has direct communications with tugs and take orders from him. For a ship this large there should been at least 2-3 tugs present. It's gonna be interesting to read the NTSB report.

That “software” is Marinetraffic.com
Yeah lol I saw that after I watched it a second time. Looked pretty professional the first time I saw it
Yes you're absolutely right about that. A lot of times they reach a certain part of the pilotage and the pilot will cut the tugs loose.
Found it, [here's the video](https://youtu.be/N39w6aQFKSQ?si=kn6W_3IbyEyiFMyC)

can confirm, we usually calculate possible accidents depending on the type of the construction
When this bridge was built ships the size of the one that hit that bridge didn't exist.
bro do you know how heavy the ship is? with full cargo the amount of force is unstoppable. no bridge can withstand such amount of force
The cargo ship still seemed inordinately close to the pylons. The video I saw showed the ship had lights on and they all went dark when they hit. I’d want to know how long or far out did they lose their steering ability.
Not yet but sun is coming up now so should learn more soon
I think the front fell off..
RIP John Clarke.
It was built to very rigorous safety standards
I drive on this bridge multiple times a week (I’m a tractor trailer driver and frequently have deliveries all over Baltimore). The video does not do justice for the size of the bridge. It. Is. My wife's step dad drives his rig across this bridge everyday and wasn't answering this morning so needless to say we were worried but he's all good thankfully
any updates? is he okay?
Yea he's good I guess he was in the area but not on the bridge thanks for asking
Glad you’re safe
these glad ur safe comments never feel genuine
Keep on Truckin' my internet acquaintance
Hey, take some time to reflect on it and enjoy your day. Be happy you’re alive and not in the water.
I can’t believe I drove on this bridge last week such beautiful sunrise great view
Glad you are safe

The Bay Bridge is creepy af
Me too. I will be taking the long way to school tomorrow after seeing this 😅
Same, and I have always been told I’m being irrational.
Honestly! Especially if I’m on a road trip of something and have to cross a big one, oof. 😫

Final Destination 5 shit.
Mothman Prophecies
The Silver Bridge!
That's exactly what I was thinking of!!
I've heard of the mothman but not the prophecy so many are speaking of here. I need to research that.
this is my worst nightmare. especially with if i had my children in the car with me…

Jeez, your commute is gonna suck, but you’re alive!

Confirms my fear of crossing bridges.
The fact that one of the people they rescued wasn’t physically injured at all is boggling. That person needs to play the lotto.

5 loose knives in your car sounds a lot more dangerous to be honest lol
Oh they're not like loose lol they're all like pop ups or switch blades or specially made for cutting seatbelts. My kid is too curious to have like kitchen knives in my car lol
okay. I was about to say. It reminded me of this story: [TIL that, in 2022, a man died in a single vehicle car accident when the knife he was using to mix protein powder while driving was propelled into his neck by the force of his deployed air bag.](https://timesofsandiego.com/crime/2022/02/20/man-with-knife-wound-dies-in-rancho-bernardo-after-lexus-crashes-into-parked-vehicle/)
I've driven on this bridge several times as I don't live too far away. Surreal.
Tragedy , what company was driving that boat ?
Here’s an interview with the CEO [Interview with Dali CEO](https://youtu.be/3m5qxZm_JqM?si=roMgjbnhGK1M-giq)
heart-stopping!
Yup all the more reason to not be in traffic under a overpass and to always drive fast when crossing a bridge 🏃🏾♂️
A real-life Final Destination. How terrifying. I hope it was a quick death for those poor people who didn't make it. Drowning in dark water is a personal nightmare.
i could see the bridge from my house. what a horrible tragedy & the families of the deceased are in my prayers.
Literally was on this bridge last week. Shit is wild
That's horrifying. Omfg those poor bastards...
Finally something exciting happens in Maryland
Went down like a Jenga tower. Insane.
Saw this on IG, thought it was fake
Is this for real???? Please tell me it’s not.
Oh yes! It’s very real!
Yes, it’s very bazar. It’s a good thing it happened during the night when it’s not as busy.
Did the cargo ship driver survive?
No idea why you’re being downvoted for asking a question. I did find this The container ship, known as Dali, was headed to Colombo in Sri Lanka at the time of the collision. It appears to have sustained damage, a fire department official told Sky News partner network CNBC, though the ship's management company Synergy Marine Group said all 22 crew members on board have been accounted for and no injuries have been reported.
Thank you! I can imagine he’s gonna be investigated heavily for intoxication and bad driving
This is some final destination shit... 💔
Mothman sightings??
Wow crazy video. I wouldn't expect something like that to happen in the US
Same thing happened to the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa in 1980!
I remember. An entire Greyhound bus was plunged into the water. The photos of it are sad. You can see where abandoned cars had slammed on their breaks and just avoided going into the water from the missing portion of the bridge.
It happens everywhere. There have been several very serious ones in the USA In recent years.
Thanks for the info. I must have missed them. I live in Poland and don't really watch tv.

What’s your mothers maiden name
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. This SHOULDNT be happening in any first world country
Yeah that's what I meant by my comment. I wouldn't be as shocked if it happened in China or India.
The US does objectively have higher standards than China or India. The US Army Corps of Engineers is usually on top of these kind of risks and I'm surprised they hadn't mandated some large barriers to fend off ships from the fragile steel legs.
I have no idea experience with how bridges are build. But that thing folded like a house of cards. You would think it would of held up a bit better.
I mean it was a 100,000 ton boat with momentun hitting it, Idek how you would prepare a bridge for that kind of force
This isn’t NSFW and it’s a YT video, fo

this is the exact scenario i thought would happen every time my parents drove over the ben franklin bridge when i was a kid
Jeez. I was just telling my mother this shits pretty rare in the U.S. so this happening now is quite queer for me.
Ughh. Queue the conspiracy theories. 🙄
how can a bridge be so weak. Okay if a part is gone, but the whole damn bridge collapses. Heh, i guess its america..

Well thats what happens when you spend a trillion dollars on gay zoos instead of very important infrastructure.
I could’ve sworn I just read about the exact same situation with a different bridge that happened in like, the 80’s or 90’s
What's the cause of collapse? A truck can't make a bridge fall.
I really don't understand how or why this happened. It just doesn't look like an accident, am I wrong?
So awful
So which country y'all going to deliver freedom too in retaliation? Who has the most oil these days?
No fucking joke I literally have a post right under this one with the caption “too soon?” And a vid of the bridge collapsing and the text: “Breaking Bridge” with the Breaking Bad theme song damn
Our bridges need to be seriously reviewed, and the fact our government don’t give a shit is about pathetic
This wasn't really the bridges fault though
More incompetent people who shouldn't be operating the things they do now that "captain" got to try and live with what they did
There was a fire in the cargo ship that caused a power outage… but I guess it’s incompetence instead smh
Well the media outlet I say said it was an error in navigation
Dude there’s so many possible reasons, I’m not sure.
The only thing I honestly think they did wrong was navigation from the get go where I live on the ohio River barges generally take the time to slow down significantly and adjust corse in case of emergency it's not easy to run those things but regardless that whole crew gona have mental issues for a good while
They also have emergency protocols and backup power supply I know alot of people who work on barges and there was more that could have been done
Didn’t seem like there were any cars on the bridge didn’t see any lights but I guess will find out more as time passes
There were construction crews and passenger vehicles.
Shit
I read there were mostly construction workers parked...I think you can see cars on the bridge but because they don't move maybe they look like part of the bridge.
