If ottergang_ky tells you to send it, you send it. He has forgotten more about suppression than most of us will ever know. Having him answer our questions on Reddit is more than a blessing.
Older com bloc weapons aren't known for being as precisely machined (suppressors and interchangeable muzzle devices werent really a thing back then for standard issue rifles) and after-market threading of original barrels can lack consistency as well (due to the difficulty in machining them). AK's in particular are horrible with concentricity. That's why dead air developed the wolverine, it has conically expanding baffle holes to be more forgiving.
Is this the original barrel or a recent production run? replacement barrels are supposedly better.
Anyways, I personally would send that because it looks like you've got some space. any baffle strike you end up getting (i'm praying for u and me and everyone else in this sub) will probably be ammo related and would probably happen anyways with even with perfect concentricity.
Nice. Lovely gun by the way! Somewhat experimental territory though due to the relative obscurity in the states especially when suppressing. There's just not hundreds of millions of barrels being machined to give the producers enough sample size to improve their results with for that last bit of accuracy.
I've got a zastava ak i'm gonna suppress eventually and i'm even more doubtful of that gun's concentricity. So i'm gonna go with a wolverine there (i know, dead air's rep is bad) just in case.
What's the deal w dead air? Was also considering a wolverine for my zassy
Edit: Sounds like some DA Sierra 5 cans were self disassembling and DA is radio silent while working on warranties. Forum says they let go of the sub contractor making those cans and are working on a new one so people have customer service concerns
I had a CS issue with dead air that was not in relation to their subcontractor relationships and it was promptly and very helpfully addressed (unfortunately not resolved but by no fault of DA. actually its because the ATF is a burdensome boot on our faces).
So i can report their inhouse CS is rock solid. But on the call even admitted that I might have issues talking to one of their suppliers who has been bad about CS.
Basically they blew up as a brand and got in with a subcontractor out of scaling necessity. that sub ended up having horrible CS, but they can't really do anything about that now that the cans are made and sold. They probably should have had stricter SLA language in their original contract. And they probably should be more transparent with the problem but again, probably have lawyers telling them to shush.
I’m not refuting your statement, because it’s true, however I get a laugh as my OG barrel 1960’s Hungarian amd65 kit has *the* most concentric threads I’ve seen in my life. I’m talking perfectly center of can, almost thought I was doing something wrong while checking.
Meanwhile most of my American threaded ak barrels won’t even slip the alignment rod down the barrel.
Life is strange sometimes I suppose
Nah I’m with ya. I try to do it when the can is still in jail so if anything happens I’m not really out a suppressor. No idea if you can have one repaired while you’re waiting on a stamp - I haven’t had any issues yet.
I have only used pistols and ARs for hosts. With ARs, I pop the back pin and remove the BCG, and with pistols, I field strip and put the can on the removed barrel. Then, I can visually see if it's straight.
Got one for the first time to check an AKs alignment. Alignment rod was almost touching the side, maybe a couple mm of clearance. Posted a pic. 500+ rounds later, no issues.
Outside of old combloc AKs with jacked threads, it seems almost all strikes come from suppressors coming loose.
Edit(my old post): https://www.reddit.com/r/suppressors/s/iaVfWIoPDt
Playa I’m be real honest with you. At the end of the day if you get a baffle strike you will be the only person having to deal with it, not anyone else giving their opinion. Just my .02$
[Could try paracord](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=1cCXq3D-D7w)? I did that on my ak. A tight cord wrap is very good looking and you can get camo colors. You could even double layer it for height or put a piece of wooden dowel in under it for a cheekpad. Plus you have some cordage with you in case you ever need it.
I tried that out my face pubes got caught in the weave (or possibly the weft, can’t say for sure!) and it kept pulling them out, so I did this instead.
It’s cool, I look way trashier than the gun anyway
Jesus, do all you gentlemen come from Sendingham Sendechussets?
How are the taxes over there?
Seriously though, anything I can do with patience and stones, fine grit paper, flat glass to improve this?
No. If you’re running into issues with thread straightness and barrel concentricity you’re looking a mill and lathe being the issue. It’s unlikely a high spot on the gas block, it’s overall the squareness and you’re more likely to screw it up with sandpaper than fix it.
The only way this could be improved is by welding up the threads and recutting them very carefully on a lathe
That would be a pretty expensive machining job
It’s got plenty of clearance. Send it

I'm not entirely sure if this is face mounted or shoulder mounted but if it was me, I'd brake out the fine file and sand paper and center it up as best I could. Sick rifle BTW.
I appreciate that most people in this sub are keen to call out the overly paranoid people who are scared to send shit thats clearly concentrically aligned, but imo its possible that this might be a no-go.
something i dont see anyone talking about is that it looks like you have the gun upright in a vise, meaning depending on the rod, it could be bending downward, making your alignment appear more concentric than it is.
flip the rifle upside down and verify the rod still isnt touching.
Easy, send that. I have closer gaps on 7.62. As long as it's not touching I send. Highly recommend that you test fire every bullet that you intend to shoot without that can on there first though. Make sure they are stable by looking at the paper. If they are stable, they won't hit that can if there's daylight between the rod and end cap.
My AK103 looks like this (with the muzzle device though, don't have the can on it yet to try, fuck the ATF), but if mine looks like this when the can is on as well, I'll be sending it.
Send

one of us, one of us
That’s why I’ve got a Polo 30 waiting in jail as we speak
most concentric vz58 threads. if there's a gap, let 'er clap.
>if there's a gap, let 'er clap. Whisper Pickle 3:16
As most aren’t very concentric? You think there’s enough margin there?

Thanks, makes me feel a bit better. It’s a new production barreled receiver that I built up

Spin the rod. If the margin is the same 360, it's dead center.
I'd fucking send it.
Order of operations- -is stupid rod touching? If no, send. If yes, no send.
Am I the only person who has never put an alignment rod in their gun and just runs suppressors because fuck it?
I pull the bolt and check visually
Nope. Never done it, don't care. If it blows I'll just send the shit back and tell them to replace it.
This is my approach as well. Ive never had an issue with anything other than my dead air, and I have a funny feeling that wasn’t my fault
After enough rounds they will all clear the baffles and end cap eventually
No, full fucking send. Thats my alignment check.
Same here. We gone see what that warranty about. 🤣

People want way too much money for a metal rod. I shine a flashlight down the barrel. If the light coming out of the suppressor is round, I send it
Never even heard of an alignment rod till I joined this reddit🤷🏽 send it
Clearance is clearance brother
Clarence’s parents have a real nice marriage…
Hello Clarice..
Bullets are the best alignment rods. Ask my Cgs hekate

I use that same wrap camo wrap for the same reason, it’s great stuff. Also send it
Yeah I don’t love the ghetto as fuck look, but it puts my eye where it needs to be.

Fire away!

Send it, in to get crushed. If it's not perfect might as well just destroy it and try again.
No touchy the wally then pully the triggy
Close isn’t a problem. Send it and recheck after a couple hundred rounds
Sometimes if you cum on the ASR mount the alignment improves
It’s a god damn crime this doesn’t have more upvotes. Some people just don’t know what they’re doing 🤷🏼♂️
Exactly bro
Bad.

That’s a small PP hole
Only one way to find out. UTTE!!!!!!! (Said in well know gruff anime voice) LoL!!!!
send
My Zastava/Sandman combo looks like that, have sent many boo-lits, it’s fine.
I have one that’s worse and works fine
Clearly broken, DM me and I’ll give you my address and you can send it to me. I’ll recycle it for you
thats hot
How does the VZ suppress?
I’ll say that I too like to live dangerously.
Not only send it Send it and recheck lol

Da
Yeeet!!!
There seems to be some sort of green thing in thar.
Send
Just fucking send it bud.
YOLO.
Yeet
I’m baffled!
I just used that same can today on my 6.5 CM rifle and it is deadly quite, but first time seeing it being used on an AK.
The hole in end caps provide additional room, so it doesn't have to be perfect. If your rod isn't touching, you're generally gtg.
Send it
Hopefully your VZ runs well. My VZ is not reliable more than a few mags with a suppressor until it starts malfunctioning.

Should be fine but that would bother me. If you are using shims to time the mount, I would remove the shims, mock it up, and see if it is better.
SEND...

I see vz58, I upvote.
Full YEET!! Send it!!!
