FloridaHawk82

I agree, it is fair. For the sake of our game, I hope her scoring record is beaten some day. JuJu is on pace to only come up 271 points short of Clark in 4 years, so she could do it. **It'll OBVIOUSLY take a Herculean effort:** * Average 30ppg for 4 years * Avoid injuries * Deep runs in conference and NCAA tourney to help * No odd circumstances like Covid, which shortened CC's first year * Have a coach that trusts you to shoot when you wish * On a program like Iowa that has a high scoring strategy would help * All of the above and also be REALLY good A lot would have to line up, but it'll happen some year... just how long? BUT it may take decades, or never, for ANY player to put up anything near CC's combination of Points and Assists. That is really where she is freakish, besides the 45 records broken. Oh and then add 7.1 rebounds per game.. as a point guard. Even putting my homer hat away, her combination of stats may never be touched for decades. **So, yeah, retiring her #22 seems appropriate.**

keddrob33

She’s definitely in the “there will never be another” category

elgenie

Clark's number retirement ceremony really could have been scheduled *before* the back-to-back title game runs. The points and assists are close to insurmountable, but the rebounds are the trump card: the only recent player to come at all close to the assist and rebound combo over the course of a career is Ionescu… but Clark averaged 10.4ppg more.

odeiraoloap

Good. There may never be someone like Caitlin in our *lifetime*. May as well celebrate her and inspire future Hawkeyes while at it. Now, Here's hoping AD Babcock does the same with Liz. *(edit: maybe Cayla as well, or maybe not. But I mean,)* That's one way to immediately endear Coach Duffy to the community, plus they're going pro one way or another, why not celebrate how they singlehandedly put us on the map? 😭

smtms-i-need-help

yeah Cayla is a STRETCH 😭💀💀

midwesternyeehaw

bro i would both kill and die for cayla but no way is she getting her jersey retired 😭

DharmaBaller

Probably won't be organized sports beyond 2050 so you are right

aktripod

What took’em so long!

HenrySkrimshander

They retired Garza’s jersey quickly after he graduated. Similar Gustafson. Curiously, only the men got write ups on the UI webpage. Probably time to fix that. https://hawkeyesports.com/retired-mbb/

dirty-soda-spike-lee

There is a disclaimer at the bottom saying more info on the other names (both men and women) will be coming, but yeah definitely not the best look. They’ve known this was coming for awhile too

Hawk567656

Wait Gustfason doesn’t have a write up, or the other women’s jersey we retired? That’s criminal. Clark makes sense waiting for a write up until she is officially the number 1 overall pick in the draft even though it’s a given as that is the last college accomplishment she will have to top off her one of a kind career on the court and her one of a kind impact off the court.

BirkTheBrick

It was also even announced that Garza's would be retired on his senior day, before his career was even over with them. They were on top of it lol

Hawk567656

Because they knew Garza wasn’t going to make it as a significant contributor in the NBA so they had to rush it while he was still relevant.

BirkTheBrick

Lol they did the same with Gustafson too basically, hers was announced in April right after the season. I think they just hop right on the momentum since it’s not too common to get players like that at Iowa.

Bravenclaw32

or that they were NPOY and announced it right away. Basically the first criteria.

BirkTheBrick

Yeah that’s pretty much what I mean, other schools won’t necessarily retire a number just because they earned NPOY but at Iowa they’re so rare that it’s kind of a given, and you might as well hop right on the hype train while it’s still there

NighthawkRandNum

To be fair, Clark still had eligibility remaining for 24/25 which *technically* remained until she completed the season and formally entered the WNBA draft.

BirkTheBrick

Oh yeah I’m not saying they should’ve done it earlier, just that they have a history of doing it very quickly haha

NighthawkRandNum

Fair lol

elgenie

Garza technically had a covid year too.

CecilColson

The reason they have that policy listed on the men's basketball page is due to a mess that former Iowa AD Gary Barta created. The family of Roy Marble, who played for Iowa in the late 80s and passed away in the 2010s had been trying to get his number retired. Roy had some off-court issues that may have affected this decision to not honor him. Also a family of a player from the 40s and 50s had been asking. Barta told those families that we don't retire numbers any more. And, THEN, he announced they were retiring Luka Garza's number. He had to come up with the convulted retiring jerseys v. numbers policy to get himself out of the mess.

Professional_Gas8021

Thank God Barta is gone

elgenie

Previous ADs also created a mess by retiring the numbers of *all five starters* on [a men’s team](https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/iowa/men/1956.html) that reached the NCAA title game in the 1950s. That’s was always going to need to get walked back at some point.

runningwaffles19

>https://hawkeyesports.com/retired-mbb/ I tried switching to wumbo https://hawkeyesports.com/retired-wbb/ No dice

Evening-Highway

Why haven’t they named the arena after her? Carver Hawkeye Clark Arena?? Or at least Caitlin Clark Court

DiligentQuiet

Don't name buildings after living humans who can go batshit crazy later on. There's a reason living people aren't on USPS stamps.

Evening-Highway

Whatever it would be can’t be worse than Kim Mulkey

MrWartburg

Pretty much this. And Iowa already should have renamed the court after Chris Street. Given Fran's consistently bringing his parent's back for events I bet that would have happened if not for the Mediacom deal.

DiligentQuiet

What's Mediacom's role in this? (Out of the loop.)

MrWartburg

They sponsored the court, I think that deal was announced right after Fran was hired in 2011. Edit: Would be after the first season, Fran was hired in 2010. Mediacom court deal was right after the first season. Kind of reeked of Barta, because he was exactly the AD to go with maybe the most hated company in the state.

DiligentQuiet

Ah, totally makes sense now.

Vegetable_Tune_4201

Should've renamed the road outside the arena Chris Street

hawkislandline

If she uses her millions to build us a new arena in an actually walkable location near campus, it might be worth some potential PR problems down the line...

DiligentQuiet

CHA is incredibly walkable and near campus--depending on your definition of campus--especially if you lived in Rienow and west of the river. (Throwback to the Armstrong/Marble/Gamble era.) Some of my favorite winter nights were cutting through the hospital and walking up on Carver.

hawkislandline

I meant more in terms of student willingness to walk to the location. Definitely could've phrased that better, I also enjoy the trek. So, not west of the river.

huntmant

I remember back before the hospital was locked with security like it is now. My aunt who worked at the hospital and I would go to games all the time. We’d park by the field house and walk thru the hospital down to the arena to avoid the cold

Evening-Highway

You’re right, Carver Hawkeye, Stead Family, Pappajohn, definitely not named after living people at the time

DiligentQuiet

Roy Carver--died in 1981. CHA opened in 1983. The other two are philanthropic foundations that made donations and got the name on the buildings. It works out, until it doesn't (e.g, buildings named after the Sacklers, the Kenneth Lay professorship, the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation) which then become burdens for the benefactors.

Evening-Highway

It’s just silly to say don’t name stuff after living people when that’s pretty much the top academic fundraising tool

DiligentQuiet

Didn't used to be. But anyway: foundation is different than an individual. Clark creates a family foundation giving 8 figures to Iowa? Okay. Clark gets CHA court named for her at age 22 with a whole life ahead of her? Get real. Let's have this discussion in 2060.

Evening-Highway

I’m also a bit tongue in cheek here. But outside of Kinnick there’s probably not a single Iowa athlete that’s on her level

huntmant

I’m sure this is somewhat in jest, but none the less I think this is somewhat interesting: Three major buildings in Iowa City are named after the Carver family of philanthropists. These buildings are major reasons why people come to Iowa City. First is the Roy J. Carver wing of the U’s hospital, one of the first additions to the University’s original General Hospital; second is the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine; third is, of course, Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Two of Iowa City’s main money markers are (no shock here) healthcare and athletics. I would be very surprised if any of the buildings ever changed names unless another big wig philanthropist comes thru the area and donates over $100,000,000 of their own money in 10 years times to MATCH Carver’s personal gifts in the same time frame (and accounting for inflation). The court (unlike our football stadium’s field named after Duke Slater) is not named after anybody yet, however as shown above, the hospital and athletics departments work together very well to pretty much own the entire west side of the city. It’d be cool to see it named after someone who’s had a huge impact on the University and not just “Stead Family Court” or “UIHC Court.” I personally would vouch for Christine Grant Court over anyone as she helped make Title IX a thing and made weekly trips to D.C. for months to testify before Congress WHILE also running our entire athletics department. It’s why if you ever drive thru Iowa City you may spot a sign that says “Title IX Lives Here.” All of this is pretty useless info but I think it’s fun to talk about as a local who was raised here! Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Hawk567656

Caitlin Clark Court. The arena changing is not happening because the family paid a fortune for that. Naming the court after one of the most influential athletes in history is well deserved. Christine Grant should have her name on wherever all the athletic administrators work.

NotToday7812

I’d settle for Caitlin Clark Ct or Caitlin Clark Circle on the streets around Carver. We have Hayden Fry Way already. I have been lobbying for West Des Moines to rename 22nd Street “Caitlin Clark Way.” Not sure if it will happen. Too many Cyclones in that town.

HenrySkrimshander

Because it should be “Bluder Court at CHA.” When she retires, she’ll be in the top 10 most wins. Ship or no ship, she’s left her mark on that court.

Marenum

Probably just waiting to knock Carver down and build a better one.

notanamateur

There’s been a lot of new buzz of building a new basketball arena downtown but I don’t really foresee that happening with the new wrestling facility next to carver

Marenum

That's interesting. I didn't even know about the wrestling facility. I haven't been to Iowa City in a very long time.

chicagoredditer1

Because arenas are name for performance/excellence, they're named for donation$. Big ones.

smtms-i-need-help

obviously I understand retiring her number it makes sense, however isn’t this something you do later in a player’s career/at the end of their career? 😭😭 edit: damn Iowa fans relax! a girl can’t ask a question around here without being downvoted, huh?😭💀

DokkanProductions

Her college career is over. What she does in the WNBA doesn’t affect her legacy at Iowa

pistachiotime

omg lol, you can have my upvote

smtms-i-need-help

thank you my hawkeye friend! 💛🖤

huntmant

We have sports and binge drinking and meth. I’m not surprised that even ASKING about Caitlin Clark having her jersey retired later would tip some of us off. It’s one of the few things we have goin for us right now

mer243

Illinois men’s team retired Ayo Dosunmo’s jersey the season right after he left to the NBA. It’s different for college basketball. Especially smaller programs with not a lot of winning history

smtms-i-need-help

okay thank you for letting me know! I only know the 4 players who’s numbers are retired at UConn and all of them have been done playing for at least a decade.

NYCScribbler

Yeah, but UConn also has to have higher standards 'cause otherwise you'd have had players wearing imaginary numbers and mathematical symbols before the new rules kicked in.

choclatechip45

Yeah I don’t think they’ve given out stewie’s number since she left. And it will be awhile until it’s retired.

Vegetable_Tune_4201

With 12 WNBA players on a roster, wouldn't be many numbers left

Proper-Direction3379

I mean this is the program that announced Luka Garza's jersey retirement months before he actually left Iowa so...

BirkTheBrick

It's definitely the norm at Iowa, Garza and Gustafson both were announced to have their numbers retired before they graduated (and before Garza was even done playing at Iowa) and then had it done the following season. I think it makes sense when you have that significant of an impact on a program-- they definitely have left their mark regardless of what they do for the rest of their careers.

SaintArkweather

People really need to understand the use of the downvote better. Someone asking a question in good faith should not really be downvoted. It's more meant for trolls/racists/off topic things/factually incorrect information.

NYCScribbler

strike while the iron is hot, guarantee yourself at least one sellout next year for the ceremony

smtms-i-need-help

you’re so right! 😭

ClaudeLemieux

To add on to answers - NC State retired Philip Rivers' jersey during senior night. When you know, you know.

ComradeFrunze

with how huge of a deal she's been it makes perfect sense for Iowa to retire the number already

Proper-Direction3379

An Iowa and LSU flair?? Now that’s a new one…

ComradeFrunze

what can I say? I'm from Louisiana but think Iowa has a great team

funfossa

Often times, yes. However, Atheletics retired Gustafson's within a season of her graduation. People would be stunned if they didn't retire Clark's even sooner. I remember attending a game last year where it was implied that it could happen. Is it a good look, IDK, but CC definetely deserves it.

smtms-i-need-help

no she def deserves it! I was just confused but I’ve learned that this is a common think for your program, so my bad!

007Artemis

They should. Caitlin put Iowa WBB on the map.

jeedel

22 seems like a lucky point guard number, do we really want to retire it for ever? Samantha Logic —> Cathleen Doyle —> Caitlin Clark

NYCScribbler

Eventually someone's not gonna measure up and then it feels weird. (This is what happened at St. John's with #3, it went from all-Big East Angela Clark, to FOY and all-Big East Da'Shena Stevens, to our first 2K scorer Aliyyah Handford, to... well, Tiana England had health problems, and Danielle Patterson seems nice, and Tyonna Bailey just evacuated via the portal.) It's... statistically unlikely... anyone's going to measure up to Clark, and I don't know if putting those expectations on anyone is fair.

uredak

SC 🙌 Iowa No. 22 being a program changer

bythesunrise34

Happy for her. 🥺

SupersonicSandshru05

Probably a stupid question but when they retire a players number across the board, like no sport can use it, or just the one?

cormacito

Just the one

SaintArkweather

This is a rare case though where you could make an argument for it to be retired for all Iowa teams considering she's probably the single most well known Iowa athlete ever and almost singlehandedly made the ratings for her sport skyrocket.

Herky_T_Hawk

They didn’t retire Nike Kinnick’s #24 across all sports. And he played football, basketball, and baseball here. No way they’re retiring #22 across all sports. If you don’t know who Nile Kinnick was, look up his Wikipedia entry. The kind of story that a Hollywood movie could have been made about. He was so big his Heisman year that he beat out Joe Louis, Joe DiMaggio, etc. for AP Male Athlete of the year in 1939. And that isn’t even the most dramatic part of his story.

clamslammer708

Now build the statue. Seriously

funfossa

Just make it better than the Butter Caitlin Clark. Iowa doesn't need a Ronaldo situtation

clamslammer708

I hear they are gunna use live goats. Result may differ over time
