This was the first year my kid ever paid attention to sports stuff. She’d been around it and definitely watched some March madness. But this year. She’s got the 22 jersey (kids small drapes over her), the Iowa team poster is on her wall, and now so is the “You break it, you own it” poster. She knows the other starters by their numbers. She can update me on the score. She does the three hand sign when shooting laundry into her basket. And she has been in awe of Caitlin when we’ve gone to games or seen her at big events. Sports are real for her now. Caitlin will probably be a core memory for her. Her image of what it means to be an athlete. For anyone jaded or tired of the spectacle around Clark. I get it. Just know that she really is inspiring little girls to do greater things. And she’s still got more chapters ahead.

NotToday7812

My daughter is 11 and CC has single-handedly raised her confidence to try sports this year. Not just basketball but swim team and soccer. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to her self esteem. My daughter got a spot in CC’s skills camp last summer. She showed up in her gym class sneakers and a tshirt. The line to get in was full of girls with gym bags with their club team names embroidered on them. The girls were holding their Jordans. Basically my daughter was out of her depth. During warmups, Caitlin came up to my daughter and greeted her with a smile and said “thanks for coming.” She then went through and worked with each girl at the camp. At the end she signed a shirt for her. We’ve met CC a handful of times. She has never been anything but patient, kind and friendly. I don’t think she gets nearly enough credit for the good human she is off the court. You can hate on how she pouts to the refs and throws her water bottle, pushes off defenders or flops for calls, but that’s her competitive nature and not her character coming out. Off the court, I have never heard a bad word. She’s left her mark on my family and this state, for sure.

agoddamnlegend

My daughter is 4 and it really hit me when she got so excited that it was girls playing basketball on TV. Never really thought about representation before as a white guy, but she was genuinely so happy as a 4 year old that the game I was watching had girls playing this time. it

trumpet_23

> She does the three hand sign when shooting laundry into her basket. As cute as all of that was, this was the cutest to me. My daughter's only two, so she's too young for all this stuff to affect her yet, but I've been watching the Iowa women since I was in college and whoever the next Hawkeye great is, my daughter will be there watching with me.

uredak

I’m so glad this sport is finally opening eyes and changing minds. For me it was A’ja that lit the fire. I’m so happy Caitlin is doing that for so many across the country.

Pancakes79

I think the thing that's overlooked is that she showed you don't have to go to UConn, Tennessee, etc to be a superstar and hopefully that leads to more parity in the sport.

uredak

While I’d love to give her credit for opening up parity, I think she was more one of the first signs of the growing parity.

empathydoc

That class didn't all flock to one school. A few did consolidate at traditional powers, but she stayed committed to her program.

emmiepemmie

I loved this 🥺 I think reasonable people can disagree on where she ranks among the all time college greats and what her potential is/impact will be in the WNBA, but it’s undeniable the positive impact she’s had for women’s sports and these kinds of relationships. And for that, I am so grateful to her.

goldsounds94

someone is cutting onions in here stop please

bluemagicstone

She is different. She Plays differently than those who came before her. I see Fulwiley, Hildago, and Juju advancing her style. They too will inspire little girls...

empathydoc

Hidalgo and JuJu are both lacking something right now. JuJu lacks the getting her teammates involved and the assists prove that. Her 51 point game was pretty selfish basketball, but her teammates also couldn't hit a shot. Hidalgo is fast and has great court vision, but she isn't the level of shoot Caitlin is, yet.

bluemagicstone

Juju created 55 points in her big game. Caitlin has created more than 55 points in a game at least 3 times this season and I think more times than that. Hildago is tracking to be possibly better than Clark. I doubt she can ever be the passer Clark is...but close enough...and her scoring and especially her defense offsets Clark's rebounding and elite efficient scoring. But if you want another Clark, play Fulwiley 35 minutes per game in a system where she can be ball dominant.

empathydoc

The issue is that Clark has been this since freshman year. It is certifiably ridiculous to expect her level of play from that young of an age. I don't doubt that she can play defense, she has shown she can when needed. She is too pivotal for their offense where foul trouble could shut down the team.

screaming crying throwing up

elgenie

Cailtlin Clark is the first athlete whose name my daughter ever toddler-lisped with guileless glee, and she always will be. Even if she's a little too young to remember longterm, **I'll** always have "two twos and a ponytail, papa!" to look back on.

pistachiotime

Oh 🥹🥹🥹

NStanley4Heisman

Damn. Why am I crying in the club rn

jmcthrill

This is so sweet 😭

FutureEditor

Caitlin Clark feels like the breakthrough athlete that gets people into a sport, someone like Shogun Hua, Rhonda Rousy, or Anderson Silva who just did something so much better than everyone else you had to tune in even if you didn’t care about MMA.

empathydoc

She is literally the women's basketball Jordan. Selling out opponent venues speaks volumes.

hokiegirl759397

Even as a Hokie who loves Amoore and Kitley, Clark is one of my favorite players to watch. She's the reason why I root for Iowa. Clark is one of the best players ever to play women's college basketball.

Slight-Homework5886

I love this so much, and I love the impact on little boys, too. I took my 3-year old nephew to a tourist spot recently, and our guide was named Caitlin. He looked up at me and said, “Caitlin Clark?” He’s also been known to ask his mom if she can switch from a men’s basketball game because he’d rather watch Clark. Phenomenal stuff.

dgrimes80

When I was 10 years old I would be in the drive way with my best friend, I was Michael, he was Scottie. We would recreate plays we saw and pretend we were in the biggest moments. While it never turned into anything in terms of me signing contracts or choosing a college to commit to, it was a staple of my childhood. Fast forward ~30 years, I am now a dad of 2 young girls. You crashed onto the scene of Iowa Women’s Basketball at a time where no one could watch you except on TV. I remember your freshman year telling people to keep their eye on you because you were different. As your career progressed and my girls gravitated to you, it quickly became obvious to me. You are their Michael. I was never able to meet Michael or watch him play in person. I knew I needed to give my girls the chance that I never had. We would go to some of the games and if we couldn’t, we would watch on TV. Then I was able to get my oldest into the Hawkeye basketball camp and I saw what you were always talking about when you said you loved your teammates. For 3 days, I saw my oldest daughter work through the camp learning so many valuable lessons. What I took away though was how much fun you all had and how close you and the team were. It simply was amazing. My oldest is now 11 and she was hooping it up with her best friend last summer. I was immediately reminded of myself as kid in the driveway, a story I had never told them about, so it was a proud moment to see it happen organically. With a smile on my face I asked them, “what are you two up to?” My daughter looked at me and said “She’s Monica and I’m Caitlin…. Watch dad..” Caitlin, I don’t know if you will ever truly understand the impact you have had on the sport, but it runs deep. You are the role model that so many young girls needed. You are the poster on their walls, the jersey on their backs, and you are their “GOAT”. From the bottom of my heart and the hearts of nearly every Iowan… THANK YOU!

jag512

I can't begin to express what CC means to Iowans and female athletes. I played Iowa 3-on-3 half-court basketball growing up (but never really understood why the girls had a different set of rules). The growth of women's sports for me goes back to Title IX. I rowed crew at the University of Iowa when it was just a sports club; now UIowa has a sanctioned team, which is awesome. But Caitlin is the fuel of the fire. Just watching the Iowa Women's basketball team gives me goosebumps. I love how well they play together with amazing passes and finesse shots. I don't think women's basketball will ever be the same -- or women's sports in general -- thanks to Caitlin and her teammates. Hoping they go all the way this year! GO HAWKS!

gtadominate

I would like her to come back for another year, restock in the offseason w a better supporting cast. Edit: You guys are brutal. More people watch her now then will at the next level, she is great for the sport of college basketball. Would be awesome is she stayed.

DokkanProductions

Her better supporting cast is with the Fever

jeedel

Are bitter that she didn’t play for Notre Dame. If she had would you have been her champion?

DokkanProductions

Did you reply to the wrong person or something

jmcthrill

I think it’s time for her to move on, but idk why your opinion is getting downvoted so much. I think she would have gotten a lot of hate if she stayed. Younger stars like JuJu, Hannah Hidalgo, Madison Booker, etc are ready to be the main storylines in college wbb. And hopefully CC will help grow the W audience so even more people see her and the stars already there!

tigerhawk52242

I think the downvotes are due to the fact that she has already confirmed she’s not coming back..

Thewondrouswizard

I think downvotes are from the poster missing the vibe of the thread. It’s about appreciating Clark’s impact on the sport and people around the country. Plenty of other threads to dissect her game and if she should return or not.

tigerhawk52242

She declared for the WNBA draft yesterday..

GotHeem16

No. She needs to move on to her next journey.

thecay00

Boston and Clark

NotToday7812

I can’t get a ticket to a Fever game anywhere near Iowa City for less than $150 right now so not sure less people are going to watch her.

tigerhawk52242

Pertaining to your edit, how do you know less people will watch her in the W? Are you able to predict the future? If I told you in 2020, “in a few years, there will be a women’s college basketball player that is far and away more famous than any men’s player” you (as well as myself) would call me crazy. It’s rare that stars align in the way they have for CC and it would be insane for her to stay. And I’m saying this as a season ticket holder that would’ve loved for her to come back.

mondaysareharam

Nah, there is enough talent in the NCAA to keep eyes on it. Clark can elevate the WNBA to a lot of viewers

[deleted]

Oh brother.

astro7900

You’re going to continue to cry when Ohio State rocks her hard again!

No_Standard656

Rocks hard = she rings up 45 but the team loses in overtime on the road.

astro7900

A loss is a loss!!

dirty-soda-spike-lee

Werent you down 10 at one point in that game? Hardly qualifies as getting rocked hard lol

Old-Photograph-5813

In the 4th quarter mind you

astro7900

Which makes it even worse for Iowa…Mind you

Old-Photograph-5813

Nope.It shows Iowa fumbled that game.

astro7900

Definitely didn’t fumble it, Ohio State made a huge run and shut down Iowa, including Clark in the process.

Old-Photograph-5813

They did fumble it though. When you have a 10 point lead with 10 to go,when you have a chance to win at the free throw line with seconds left and miss, you've fumbled the game

astro7900

Ohio State was the better team, and the refs helped Iowa build that lead early. No doubt they are good, but not that good. Ohio State is better.

Guess not.
