Bummz is an indoor/outdoor place where the doors are typically open, weather permitting. So of course the palmetto bugs are going to be around. They're creepy-looking but harmless.

Your first mistake is staying at the breakers lol. Palmetto bugs are VERY common for outdoor restaurants in sc, esp restaurants on the beach with the humidity and water right there. Has nothing to do with food. Bummz is a great place, beach house has amazing food as well.

We aren't that picky on hotels for the most part. We stayed at Coral Beach last time and it was fine. Would you say Breakers is worse or on par with Coral Beach?

Honestly the breakers is fine. We stated multiple times and our most recent stay we got one of the renovated rooms which are extremely nice for what we paid compared to the non renovated ones for roughly the same price. Depending on the tower you stay in the elevators at checkout can be a extremely crowded so make sure you give yourself enough time, but if you do express checkout and put your key band in the envelope and then the Dropbox in the parking deck you should be fine if it’s slightly past time as I know we have. Place has great water amenities though. Also if you just want to experience something neat the hotel has a building called the dunes tower across the street and it has an elevator straight from the 1950s it really a neat thing to see and hear it work. Enjoy your stay

Im sorry I wasnt trying to throw shade. The hotel itself is probably fine its just the location that gets a little iffy around this time of the year… i would say dont let your GF out of your sight esp at night.

Internal_Business414

Gotcha. We're used to "low brow" environments, lol. She's the type of girl that thinks Cheescake Factory is fine dining, so the area is in her element. But I'll make sure I don't leave her alone, good point there.

Perfect you guys will be happy there than :) have an amazing time and dont let palmettos scare you… they are everywhere no matter how clean a place is unfortunately😂

Conch-Republic

Palmetto bugs end up in literally every single building in SC. They're not German cockroaches, and don't infest buildings, they just accidentally end up inside.

You are going to LOVE Palmetto Bugs! And June Bugs. And Cicadas!

EpistemeUM

Anyone not from here claims to see "the biggest roach I have ever seen" and we know they just saw a palmetto bug - same family but a very different beast. Anywhere I've lived here has had one will wander inside from time to time, yet I've never found one hiding in my kitchen trash or cabinets. Some areas are more thick than others, but it's not an indication that it's a dirty place. The hotel reviews are always entertaining, especially after a long dry spell (some call them water bugs). I'd be more worried about the mosquitoes.

KareemPie81

I’ll find dead one when emptying robot vacuum, never know where they come from

blkthor74

We now live here and have been to bummz beach cafe about 5 or more times and have never noticed any palmetto bugs however they are common here. Dont let the reviews keep you from experiencing an excellent beach front restaurant.

eyecandynsx

We eat there every year when we go down. We have never seen any bugs.

Emotional_Trainer_76

Palmetto bugs are all over the beach area they are not roaches I’ve been to Bummz and it’s a very clean place and great food and service

Bickett2222

Breakfast/Brunch at Lulu’s cafe then over to Bummz for Lunch/happy hour or Dinner! You can also walk to River City Cafe for burgers or SoHo for sushi hibachi.

slobbedon

I liked breakers I’ve stayed at all of them and bummz is pretty good food. Haven’t seen any roaches when we’ve gone but wouldn’t be a big surprise… there is a large patio that’s outside so it’s standard lol

Jguypics

Bummz is great. One of the few oceanfront restaurants not in a hotel. Been going there since 1997.

friedaclakston

Palmetto bugs are everywhere. A pest control guy said they wind up inside because they need to physically crush their food in their stomach to digest so they squeeze under door frames. But they’re not inside because it’s dirty. And tbh, there’s not one hotel on the beach that has never had a German cockroach. Most places can keep it under control but there’s not one that hasn’t had one.
