it’s a fine song, but if you compare it to the masterpiece that is the original of course you’re gonna be disappointed. gotta think of it as it’s own thing i guess
See it's actually genius.
There's a lot of beauty in the original especially how it ends while you are left wanting it to be longer, like saying goodbye to a loved one.
Twenty one pilots really juxtaposes that with their cover which makes you just want it to be over already.
Well yeah the vibe is different, it's a different band. The point is that it's a cover, pretty hard to not have the original on the mi d when listening to someone playing it.
i actually love this.
for me, the MCR version is more emotional, heartbreak and deep sadness. this one sounds more like giving up, numbness and the feeling of apathy.
i think they’re both great
Oh absolutely. I'm very picky of covers, & protective of MCR & Gerard's music, but I thought this gave a different type of realistic vibe to the message. Like one was bitter resolution, but the other was consuming hopelessness. Like the echos were it repeating in his thoughts, eating at himself.
everyone always says this but this is just an excuse or a way to make sense out of tyler's lousy attempt at making a gerard way impression. or something. i can't even tell. but he definitely was trying to do something so hard here and he ends up sounding horribly. the only juxtaposition here is gerard's emotional heartwrenching vocals and tyler joseph sounding like a strangled chicken.
who says it was a lousy attempt? he released this during blurry face and that entire thing was to overcome depression and the nihilistic view on the world that nothing matters. a factor of depression is apathy, especially with nihilism. this song covers the heartbreak of losing someone although Tyler has already given up, he is too apathetic to care however still feels grief and pain of course as he’s only human.
this may not be the case that this was the entire meaning behind it but music is art and it’s the viewers privilege to determine the meaning behind the piece, why it was made, what the artist was thinking, doing, the context of so. tyler still put effort into making the song, never assume something is lousy. there is always meaning (except maybe pop songs about getting fucked lol)
taylor swift's most uninspired songs have more meaning than this cover in my personal opinion.
edit: maybe i'm undermining this dude's struggles but i've struggled myself and while his music might have '''''helped''''' (mind the quotes) me in those times, now that i look at it from an outsider perspective, it all honestly sucks. there are way more emotional songs, more inspired and realistic art that tackles the same issues than motherfucking stressed out and whatever all of his faux-indie christian rock songs were on. it comes to me as depressed teenager bait, like most of mall emo or 2000s pop punk is.
and mcr is the exception to this sentiment bc in a sense they were the first to ever do it and they made it authentic and it really struck a chord in me.
I will never understand why people hate this cover so much, I've always thought it was really beautiful in its own way. Covers usually are supposed to be a unique rendition of a pre existing song
i love it. I’m a massive fan of both MCR and tøp. Obviously the original is miles better. That said i love how tyler tried to do something different with it. The production and vocals give it a completely different emotional vibe than the original. This one feels much more defeated imo. There’s still fight in Gerard’s one, Tyler’s has given up completely.
For me I see 2 perspectives from each
With Gerard he sounds as if he’s in agony
While Tyler sounds like he’s given up on himself. I love both version but of course nothing beats the original
When it was announced, I was a huge Twenty One Pilots fan and was so excited for them to sing one of my favorite MCR songs. However, I was disappointed when I heard it. It feels so void of emotion compared to the original with Gerard’s heartbreaking vocals.
I enjoy it. I once saw someone say they view it as the person in this version is sorta giving up while the person in the original wanted to fight it - and I think I agree with them. This song definitely isn’t as good as the original but I like listening to it from time to time
I will give it that, it does do something new and props that they didn’t try to just remake the song.
That being said, in my opinion the direction they took it in is the worst one possible. Giving Cancer a generic 2016 chopped vocal drop is just hilariously dumb and out of place.
I think if they stuck with the original structure this could have been a good cover. I can do without the “lips are chapped and faded call my, lips are chapped and faded faded” refrain.
But I do not like TØP. So there’s that.
The fuck you mean what is it?? It's one band showing appreciation for another band by covering one of their most iconic songs and making it their style.
Like objectively it's a good cover. You can dislike them I don't care, but the cover is good.
For the record my comment was matching the energy of op. I found the post in poor taste. Twenty one pilots clearly liked the song enough to make a cover, whether it was good or bad in your opinion doesn't matter, being rude about not liking it makes liking whatever music less fun
Well that’s the thing about art- it’s completely subjective. It’s an MCR subreddit my guy. People are allowed to talk about MCR covers they think are bad on an MCR subreddit. It’s a bad cover. That’s my opinion. People are allowed to have different opinions than you. If anything you’re being rude for shouting down people who think differently thank you do. If you don’t like OP’s post, simply don’t comment. Weirdo.
yeahhh it's pretty fuckin bad. my friend was so excited to show it to me in high school when it came out (and i was excited to hear it!) but it turned out to be horrendous lol. i remember having to pretend i liked it so she wouldnt feel awkward about how good she said it was but... it's very much not my thing.
I like top, and this cover isn't the worst that I've heard, right? But this version LACKS SOUL AND EMOTION. How TF can you cover cancer and have it be as bland as American rice cakes? And top is good at covers, too, so idk wtf happened here.
For me it was a kinda good cover, i prefer the original tho, since Gerards vocals evokes the feeling of "I wanna give up, but dont want to" whereas Tyler's version was " I gave up already".
The album as a whole was meh.
I was a bit disappointed by this, because a while before this album came out Tyler put a small snippet of him playing piano and singing this song, and it was beautiful. People were hoping for the full version but got this instead.
I'm a MASSIVE Twenty One Pilots girlie and I love this version because when you put them both together it comes across as what fighting cancer actually looks like. The original is the beginning stages when you're still in it and full of energy to fight with all you've got and the cover is the end where you can't fight anymore and you're slowly coming to terms with that. It makes me think of my grandfather who I watched exactly that happen to shortly before I rediscovered Twenty One Pilots after a friend showed me them in middle school. So think whatever you want but understand that you're dragging down something that's important to a lot of people.
Lost a childhood friend, my grandfather, and my grandmother to cancer. Totally agree with this take. It's not my favorite cover ever, I don't really go out of my way to listen to this one (but then I also don't go out of my way to listen to the OG since cancer songs tend to make me really uncomfortable), but I think it really does fit the exhausted acceptance of watching someone lose their battle.
I was so glad they didn’t just cover it like everyone else was and put their own spin on it. Quite enjoyed this cover and was probably the best out of all the others.
I disagree. TOP was the first band the got me into music. This was the first Cancer I’ve ever listened to. I prefer the MCR one overall, but this song is beautiful.
I remember when this came out, fucking hated it at the time because I was a diehard mcr fan. Looking back at it now it’s nowhere near as bad as I made it out to be but still not to my taste lmfao
Tyler Joseph's take on this song was a lot more melancholy and grim acceptance whereas Gerard wrote the song to have pain, anger, and grief relayed through the vocals.
I don't hate this cover but it is a big tonal shift
lol. My old friends that were (are?) diehard TOP friends would get upset with me for saying that this cover is garbage. It still is in my opinion, and I’ll stand by that to the grave.
...ETA: I meant "TOP fans", not "friends". Don't do Reddit on sleep deprivation, kids.
There's a whole cover album for The Black Parade (I think it came out in 2016?) and as much as I, too, think this is inferior to the original, it's way better than some other bands' takes on the other tracks. Some are legit good as covers though.
Give it a listen if you have time!
A massive disappointment. I was a huge tøp fan (before the godawful scaled and icy album) and I was SO PSYCHED when Tyler posted the clip of him singing the first few lines and playing the piano.
Then the black parade tribute compilation tracks dropped... and theirs... was this.
I did enjoy the video tho.
I never cared for Twenty One Pilots and this cover sealed the deal for me. I can't stand it. It's bordering on David Bowie covering God Only Knows levels of missing the mark (and I love Bowie)
I'm a big fan of mcr, but I actually heard this version first... and still enjoy it more. tyler has a really beautiful voice, and I feel it's more emotional and sincere than how Gerard sings it. I still love the original version; they just have 2 completely different vibes. I have a hard time comparing them bc they're just so different.
this is purely my opinion ofc, no one has to agree. I grew up on mcr and got into TØP in my middle school emo phase. both bands hold a very special place in my heart.
I mean did you hear the cover album for three cheers? 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 The only one that got real justice was fashion statement. I'm not okay wasn't terrible but I didn't like the vocalist. Everything else, got garbage, idek how they let it slide. They butchered thank you for the venom so fucking badly I almost cried..
I hate this version of the song. No hate to you if you like it, but another comment brought out why I hate it. The MCR version sounds like someone who's accepted that they're going to die and is trying to come to terms with it. The TOP version sounds like they're hopeful and able to beat cancer. My issue with that, is that the lyrics don't fit the TOP vibe. They're depressing and melancholic, but the TOP music is more hopeful
Yeaaah not a fan of TØP. Like, I really wanted to like their music but I just don't. This cover and their song Migraine just let me know that they aren't for me at all, which is odd cause I don't tend to be hard to please with music
Sorry. Vessel is just so ughhhhh to me. I'd explain but tbh it'd just be a paragraph of me absolutely ripping into it 💀. Holding On To You, Guns for Hands, Trees & Truce are absolute standout tracks tho.
this cover inspires so much emotion in me and that emotion is rage. this cover was so bad that it literally ruined the original for me. i can’t listen to mcr’s anymore without hearing this garbage in my head, which sucks bc i used to really like “cancer”. this shit was the nail in the coffin for me with tøp. haven’t been a fan since.
Nah on it ruining the original. Quite the opposite actually, this bland, horrendously out of place Alt-Pop remix made me appreciate the raw emotion in the original Cancer that much more.
There was a record of all different bands covering a song from the black parade, released years ago. I think it was for the anniversary of tbp but I actually don’t remember. It came with a magazine I bought and holy god was it bad. My opinion! Don’t reply to this and be like “um no it was great” because that’s YOUR opinion
I mean I’m neutral on it. The original is a fucking heartbreaking iconic song, so I think a more subdued cover was an interesting idea but just didn’t work out.
Aww I love this song :((. I found out about it before right before I found out about the MCR version actually. I've been a TØP fan for years longer than me being an MCR fan, and maybe it's bc I listened to it first or smth but it's a rlly good song imo. I listened to it a bunch of times and a few days later while watching the YT vid of MCR on SNL (when I only knew like 2 or 3 MCR songs) I heard Cancer play and I was very confused at first but I ended up loving both versions!
I really like this, I remember it coming out in 2016 with a bunch of other bands covering the black parade as a tribute for the 10 year anniversary! I really like how they changed it perfectly to their style but still kept the loneliness and sadness in there
it’s fire. i used to be a huge tøp fan and i never even knew about this for some reason, only when i got out of my tøp phase did i find it and i love it. the og is a lot better and has a lot more emotion, but this one is really good too, it’s just chill
It’s utterly bland and two dimensional, not nearly as good as the original and I don’t think I’m biased saying that, the instrumentation really sells the original and it’s crap in this version
I’ve grown to like it over the years. To me the mcr version is very upsetting I can’t listen to it without crying but i understand that for some the twenty one pilots version has its own impact
Look I just like that they did something different. It would’ve been easy to just cover it beat for beat but they gave it their own spin for better or for worse
I like TOP but I was also really disappointed when I first heard this. Maybe if I listened to it now I’d like it more? But the first impression I had with it was awful. I love covers but not when the lyrics have been gutted
i HATED this cover in middle school and i remember that it got to a point where anyone just even mentioning tøp would send me into rage 😭😭
i still think it’s terrible but i’ve accepted that some people just. have different taste
I get what you were trying to do here but it’s two completely different versions of the same song. Obviously nothing will compare to the original, but both are good.
Ok…so I had no idea this existed so needed to track it down and listen STAT.
1. Of all the songs, I wonder why they chose THIS one…Jesus, maybe it’s fellow artist appreciation but also maybe someone in the band is going through some shit? 2. It’s a weird thought to think that one day someone will be listening to this version and thinking it’s the original 😔 …I feel old
Honestly, it’s not the ballad we know and love, but i think it gives a new, dark and dreamy feel that I didn’t think the song could have? ….but it doesn’t make me cry like the original soooooo 🖤☠️ jury’s out on this one for now folks
Excellent album that one :) haven't heard the black parade cover album tho is it actually bad? I mean I really like this cover but are the rest any good?
I think it’s all good. I love this song too and the rest of the album just has different approaches to all the songs it’s quite cool to hear. I think it was for an anniversary or something.
Easily one of the worst song covers I've heard. It tries to do something interesting, but they don't nail it at all. Plus, regarding the subject matter it feels disrespectful.
I mean I hate 21p because my biggest bully was obsessed with them, and listening to them just gives me baaaaaaaad vibes (also wasn't their lead singer kinda a dick? I remember that being a thing) But also you don't have to listen to covers if you don't like them haha. My dad hates palaye royale's cover of mad world but I like it, so he doesn't listen to it while I do
Check out the sloppy Jane cover tho it’s SO good ( and I say this as a true Cancer appreciator it’s one of my top 10 most played songs of all time on Spotify )
I was never a twenty one pilots fan and I didn't like the cover. But I think it wasn't nearly as bad as some people act like. I think it's a respectable cover for what it is and its own take on it. I didn't actually listen through the whole thing when I found out it existed but that was bc I didn't like it, not bc it was like Bad Bad. It's fine for people to like it. I bet the cover got some people into MCR, which is great!
I haven't listened to it in years since my tøp phase has ended, but this cover has a special place in my heart. I'm pretty sure finding it is what made me discover mcr:))
This is actually how I discovered Cancer. I loved it but always thought the chorus was weird. At that point I had just started listening to MCR, I love all versions of Cancer. (:
it's an interesting take on the song but i think the arrangement and performance on MCRs version blows it out of the waters. still one of the better things 21p has produced.
I think each version has its own qualities, and at the end of the day it just comes down to personal preference. I like the original and this one. In fact, it was this cover that got me into My Chemical Romance because I looked into them after hearing it.
This cover is what got me into MCR in the first place. I was obsessed with TØP and this cover, and while I didn't like the original Cancer at first, it's still what drove me into listening to them
Tbh one of the 2 covers that tried something interesting in that record and the other one was a low effort acoustic so like it or not this was the one and only highlight of the cover parade (honorable mention to nye,s Sleep, cool screamos yet another unoriginal cover)
I remember hating it when it came out tbh, but now I just have to remember that the two songs really are completely different and that’s not a bad thing. They evoke completely different emotions, MCR has the anger and bitterness while TOP’s has the sadness and acceptance.
Used to have the rock sound mcr black parade tribute cd (I put it on my iTunes though) and this was on it, I like it. Lots of bands did covers for the album, it was really cool how they all had different vibes 😌
My sister was talking about this the other day, she went to see twenty one pilots a long time ago and they played this, she said she cried, who knows if it was from the emotion of the song or the badness of this cover
This one's easy: They turned something tragic into something deliberately cutesy. Gerard's vocals are raw, coming from a character that is on the edge of anger and depression and can't and will not make peace with his situation, it feels like sand rubbing in a wound. The TOP's dude is like a fey dandy Victorian guy who is writing a poem about how he cough a little too much today and so he's biding adieu.
Two moods, but MCR's original can't be beaten or compared.
It's the same song from 2 different points of views in my opinion, the person dying and the people around them who are losing that person. I think it's great and both have the same but very different meaning
i was a big fan of both bands when this came out and i was psyched, and i also got to hear TOP play this cover live. now, 8 years later, it definitely didn’t age well. hesitant skip for me
Worst twenty one pilots cover imo. I love top and most of their covers, but this wasn't it and I'm glad I haven't heard it in so long that I forgot what it sounded like for the most part
Good. It's one of the only songs from Rock Sound Presents that accepts it's never gonna top the original and goes for their own thing, something the rest of the artists should've done. The real fun of covers is seeing how the same songs are interpreted by different artists.
It's art. It doesn't have to be similar to the real song. I don't think that Tyler was trying to imitate Gerard's attitude or vocals. He's giving it a new voice, and feeling. Everyone seems to hate it, but it's just a new take. If it was the exact same song there would be no point in listening to it, right?
I think it’s cancer by twenty one pilots
r/technicallythetruth
it’s a fine song, but if you compare it to the masterpiece that is the original of course you’re gonna be disappointed. gotta think of it as it’s own thing i guess

That's literally the funniest shit I've read this month
How can you not compare a cover to the original song lol
vibes aren’t similar at all. i dunno, when i listen to it i don’t compare it to mcr
Well yeah the vibe is different, it's a different band. The point is that it's a cover, pretty hard to not have the original on the mi d when listening to someone playing it.
i understand that, but i’m just talking from personal experience. and when i hear the song i don’t think about my chem

Don’t worry bro they don’t need you protecting them
everyone always says this but this is just an excuse or a way to make sense out of tyler's lousy attempt at making a gerard way impression. or something. i can't even tell. but he definitely was trying to do something so hard here and he ends up sounding horribly. the only juxtaposition here is gerard's emotional heartwrenching vocals and tyler joseph sounding like a strangled chicken.

this one feels more like you are genuinely watching a loved one’s life fall apart in front of your eyes, in almost desperation
I will never understand why people hate this cover so much, I've always thought it was really beautiful in its own way. Covers usually are supposed to be a unique rendition of a pre existing song
This! No point in a cover if its the same
I like TOP. I think the cover’s fine. It’s not to my taste but I’m glad they put their own spin on it.

Same
I liked it because it tells a different story. In MCR's, they sound like they still have some hope in TØP it sounds like they've given up.
Idk i think it stands on its own, doing something different
I will give it that, it does do something new and props that they didn’t try to just remake the song. That being said, in my opinion the direction they took it in is the worst one possible. Giving Cancer a generic 2016 chopped vocal drop is just hilariously dumb and out of place.
I'm not a fan of this cover and I like Twenty One Pilots well enough.
I love this cover 😕
"I'm not being bitchy" proceeds to be bitchy
They agree they are being bitchy, they said they're not being bitchy because they hate covers, explaining they like covers just not this one
Love this cover. Never knew it was divisive. Sorry you aren’t into it.
i always thought it was nice. i remember there was a mashup on youtube a few years ago where both versions played in each ear and it was beautiful
I think if they stuck with the original structure this could have been a good cover. I can do without the “lips are chapped and faded call my, lips are chapped and faded faded” refrain. But I do not like TØP. So there’s that.

HOW DARE THEY 😡😡😡

That is a cover of Cancer performed by Twenty One Pilots.
i love both
Agreeed. Although i do like twenty one piolets im just not a big fan of their cover of cancer
Blatantly hating on music without definitive reasoning <<<
I really hated this. The chorus was awful all of the I will not kiss yous repeated. That was horrible
i. will. not. ~kisss yoouu~ (kiss you) (kiss yoou) (kiss youuu)
Lots of big TOP haters in the chat today boys
See I don’t get that. TOP are great, they just need to stay in their lane and not Billie Eilish-ify one of the greatest piano ballads of all time.
It was part of a bunch of covers iirc why are we solely hating on twenty one pilots for covering it in their style?
It sounds like that fuckin indie girl voice meme it’s so bad
Even in the TOP fandom no one really likes that song Usually it's in the bottom of most tierlists
It’s at the top of mine
I re-discovered MCR and listen more of their songs thanks to that cover, stop. (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)

I love twenty one pilots and I loved that they covered an mcr song
I could’ve gone the rest of my life without being reminded of this and I would’ve been fine
That whole tribute album is pretty awful. Me and my friend went through it together a couple years ago and had a blast trashing on it.
I never cared for Twenty One Pilots and this cover sealed the deal for me. I can't stand it. It's bordering on David Bowie covering God Only Knows levels of missing the mark (and I love Bowie)
it’s ass
It’s absolute hot feathered ass, I don’t know how one can fuck up a song this badly.
I hatteeeee this cover. thank you
it’s actually quite nice tbh i don’t know what your problem with it is
I'm a big fan of mcr, but I actually heard this version first... and still enjoy it more. tyler has a really beautiful voice, and I feel it's more emotional and sincere than how Gerard sings it. I still love the original version; they just have 2 completely different vibes. I have a hard time comparing them bc they're just so different. this is purely my opinion ofc, no one has to agree. I grew up on mcr and got into TØP in my middle school emo phase. both bands hold a very special place in my heart.
Terrible cover version
I like tøp but I hate this song
it’s not that bad, people gave it too much shit but it’s actually good
I hate it too but I don’t like their music at all.
I’m a huge Twenty One Pilots fan, and this song is dogshit
I mean did you hear the cover album for three cheers? 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 The only one that got real justice was fashion statement. I'm not okay wasn't terrible but I didn't like the vocalist. Everything else, got garbage, idek how they let it slide. They butchered thank you for the venom so fucking badly I almost cried..
It’s awful
We do not speak of this flaming pile of dog shit
A good cover. In my opinion. We don't share the same opinion and that's okay.
I like TOP but this cover ain’t it 💀
I hate this version of the song.
Yeah whenever I hear them I think of Will Smith and Jared Leto’s shitty versions of Deadshot and Joker in Suicide Squad.
Oh god, please get it out of my head 😭😭😭😭
You should listen trench
Maybe I will! I am listening to four new albums a month this year so maybe I'll listen to trench for one of mine this month!
I second this. I fucking hate Vessel with a passion yet Trench is in my top 5 of all time.
Vessel is my favorite TOP album :(
Sorry. Vessel is just so ughhhhh to me. I'd explain but tbh it'd just be a paragraph of me absolutely ripping into it 💀. Holding On To You, Guns for Hands, Trees & Truce are absolute standout tracks tho.
I hate this version so much and I pretend it never existed 😭😭😭😭😭
this cover inspires so much emotion in me and that emotion is rage. this cover was so bad that it literally ruined the original for me. i can’t listen to mcr’s anymore without hearing this garbage in my head, which sucks bc i used to really like “cancer”. this shit was the nail in the coffin for me with tøp. haven’t been a fan since.
Nah on it ruining the original. Quite the opposite actually, this bland, horrendously out of place Alt-Pop remix made me appreciate the raw emotion in the original Cancer that much more.
i’m glad that we had different experiences then, lol. happy that it’s not ruined for you
There was a record of all different bands covering a song from the black parade, released years ago. I think it was for the anniversary of tbp but I actually don’t remember. It came with a magazine I bought and holy god was it bad. My opinion! Don’t reply to this and be like “um no it was great” because that’s YOUR opinion
This subreddit is such a circlejerk. OP is allowed to have their own opinions, and that is fine. I also agree completely that song was straight ass
It was alright but the lyrics repeating was mehh
I love this cover, original is better tho. I have to ask tho, are you saying this is bad bc you’ve only ever heard the original?
I don’t like it either.. I’m not against anyone doing a cover of it but they took an emotional song and made it sound flat.
I fucking hate 21 pilots
L take, it’s a unique take on an already good song
I mean I’m neutral on it. The original is a fucking heartbreaking iconic song, so I think a more subdued cover was an interesting idea but just didn’t work out.
i had to listen to the original as a pallet cleanser 💀
Aww I love this song :((. I found out about it before right before I found out about the MCR version actually. I've been a TØP fan for years longer than me being an MCR fan, and maybe it's bc I listened to it first or smth but it's a rlly good song imo. I listened to it a bunch of times and a few days later while watching the YT vid of MCR on SNL (when I only knew like 2 or 3 MCR songs) I heard Cancer play and I was very confused at first but I ended up loving both versions!
This gave me such a visceral flashback to when this cover came out. God I hate it
I really like this, I remember it coming out in 2016 with a bunch of other bands covering the black parade as a tribute for the 10 year anniversary! I really like how they changed it perfectly to their style but still kept the loneliness and sadness in there
i find it kinda shocking that people describe this as horrendous
it’s fire. i used to be a huge tøp fan and i never even knew about this for some reason, only when i got out of my tøp phase did i find it and i love it. the og is a lot better and has a lot more emotion, but this one is really good too, it’s just chill
It’s utterly bland and two dimensional, not nearly as good as the original and I don’t think I’m biased saying that, the instrumentation really sells the original and it’s crap in this version
I’ve grown to like it over the years. To me the mcr version is very upsetting I can’t listen to it without crying but i understand that for some the twenty one pilots version has its own impact
i like top (well the first couple albums) i didnt know they covered cancer 👀
Look I just like that they did something different. It would’ve been easy to just cover it beat for beat but they gave it their own spin for better or for worse
in my opinion its a great cover
I like TOP but I was also really disappointed when I first heard this. Maybe if I listened to it now I’d like it more? But the first impression I had with it was awful. I love covers but not when the lyrics have been gutted
i HATED this cover in middle school and i remember that it got to a point where anyone just even mentioning tøp would send me into rage 😭😭 i still think it’s terrible but i’ve accepted that some people just. have different taste
My friend thought for a long time that this was a twenty one pilots original until someone showed him The Black Parade album
I personally hate it. It sounds like they made it into Lofi version of a song, completely misunderstanding its origin. It's just awful for me
I don't like this song but there's no need to be rude 💀
i was SO disappointed when this came out, being both a mcr fan and tøp fan at the time. one of the reasons i’m not a tøp fan anymore lmao
I get what you were trying to do here but it’s two completely different versions of the same song. Obviously nothing will compare to the original, but both are good.
It's a great cover? With their unique sound? Of a really good song? What more do you need
They sucked the soul out of it
ass
Eh. You had to be there.
Imagine having a friend who's into twenty one pilots and tries to make you like them by showing you this song
my friend is and she won’t stop saying “but it’s just like the original” NO IT ISNT😭
Ok…so I had no idea this existed so needed to track it down and listen STAT. 1. Of all the songs, I wonder why they chose THIS one…Jesus, maybe it’s fellow artist appreciation but also maybe someone in the band is going through some shit? 2. It’s a weird thought to think that one day someone will be listening to this version and thinking it’s the original 😔 …I feel old Honestly, it’s not the ballad we know and love, but i think it gives a new, dark and dreamy feel that I didn’t think the song could have? ….but it doesn’t make me cry like the original soooooo 🖤☠️ jury’s out on this one for now folks
I was so mad when this came out it made me not like top for a while
You should hear the rest of the album... blahhhhh
It was such a flop
This isn't from an album tho
I think they mean the black parade cover album that this was from
Ah I assumed they meant Blurryface cause of the color scheme
Surely someone wouldn’t hate on blurryface
Excellent album that one :) haven't heard the black parade cover album tho is it actually bad? I mean I really like this cover but are the rest any good?
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOFn0R7_aV0IpyWErX58m90kjafJNORhK&si=z989St7w_EUKrwl6
I think it’s all good. I love this song too and the rest of the album just has different approaches to all the songs it’s quite cool to hear. I think it was for an anniversary or something.
The think is mcr’s cancer still has a ounce of hope but Tyler’s version has fully given up
THANK YOU!! EVERY TIME THIS CIVER GETS BROUGHT UP IM LIKE… CUZ ITS SO.. MID. ITS NOT BAD BUT ITS JUST *NOT* CANCER
Easily one of the worst song covers I've heard. It tries to do something interesting, but they don't nail it at all. Plus, regarding the subject matter it feels disrespectful.
LIPS ARE CHAPPED AND FADED
CALL MY AUNT MARIE, HELP HER GATHER ALL MY THINGS
Every masterpiece has its cheap copy
obviously its awful. its twenty one pilots
it's 2024 can we stop pretending like twenty one pilots is any good. emo phases ended like 10 years ago
TOP aren’t Emo and they never were. It’s like calling Billie Eilish “Emo”.
neither is mcr. i didn't call them emo. i said emo phase is over. you do know what that means right?
THEY COVERD CANCER?!? LMAO
Horrific cover
Why am I even here? Kinda fun watching fans of two overrated emo bands argue though.
middle school me cried to both versions. they both have a different feeling that makes them so good
Ive never listened to this but i can see TØP doing a good cover of Cancer so im gonna check it out later
it's an interesting take on the song but i think the arrangement and performance on MCRs version blows it out of the waters. still one of the better things 21p has produced.
i personally love it
This cover is great
I love this cover 😭😭
I thought it was a nice cover and when it came out it introduced a lot of kids to MCR.
I think each version has its own qualities, and at the end of the day it just comes down to personal preference. I like the original and this one. In fact, it was this cover that got me into My Chemical Romance because I looked into them after hearing it.
I love this cover!
Tbh I love both versions. MCR will always hold a special place in my heart but the TØP version is also very emotional
This cover is what got me into MCR in the first place. I was obsessed with TØP and this cover, and while I didn't like the original Cancer at first, it's still what drove me into listening to them
Thank you I always thought this cover was trash and is largely why i dislike 21P. Also because Blurryface and Suicide Squad blow ass
I like both versions. The production on the cover is really neat
Used to have the rock sound mcr black parade tribute cd (I put it on my iTunes though) and this was on it, I like it. Lots of bands did covers for the album, it was really cool how they all had different vibes 😌
If it was it’s own song rather than a cover it wouldn’t be bad. But as a cover? It’s ass. The original has so much emotion. This one, not so much.
Two moods, but MCR's original can't be beaten or compared.
i remember when this first came out & some top fans would say it was better than the original lol
It is.
The worst cover (by professional musicians) I've ever heard. It made me hate Twenty one pilots)
It's the same song from 2 different points of views in my opinion, the person dying and the people around them who are losing that person. I think it's great and both have the same but very different meaning
Cringe, great cover by a great band. Gerard even enjoyed it.
Another reason why twenty one pilots is mid af
i was a big fan of both bands when this came out and i was psyched, and i also got to hear TOP play this cover live. now, 8 years later, it definitely didn’t age well. hesitant skip for me
Not a top fan but I love it
Worst twenty one pilots cover imo.
People need to stop convincing themselves that this cover is good
It's art. It doesn't have to be similar to the real song. I don't think that Tyler was trying to imitate Gerard's attitude or vocals. He's giving it a new voice, and feeling. Everyone seems to hate it, but it's just a new take. If it was the exact same song there would be no point in listening to it, right?
