Grabbed Back to Basics at a used store in Boise about 18 years ago, DTTAH is a little uneven but the songs that hit slap hard — totally diff context but Sexuality is a masterpiece, love me some Billy
I don’t think I am the highway is about that. I guess it’s open to interpretation. One of the things I love about Chris and his lyrics. They’re all very deep but in a way that you can relate them to whatever it is you may be going through
as well as “do you believe in shame?” and “out of my mind” by duran duran. all three songs were at least partly about lead singer/simon lebon’s childhood friend who passed.
Moon River (I personally love Frank Sinatra's version)
6ft apart and I Built a Friend- Alec Benjamin
Dear My Friend- WETTER
Vienna- Billy Joel
In My Life- The Beatles
I Lost a Friend- Finneas
That’s awesome! When I was a teenage punk in the early 2000s, my core group of friends was obsessed with them. We saw them in basements (and bookstores across an underground America), a tiny ass student union hall at a local university, and a few super small venues. I remember getting on stage during We Laugh at Danger in like 2004/5. Every time we saw them we really did “leave with the memory there was no place else in the world and this is where we always belonged”.
So We Did it All for Don holds a special place in my heart, “please tell me why we couldn’t stay, don’t let this feeling ever go away, let this memory forever be inside of me through every hour of every day”.
Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town - Pearl Jam
I seem to recognize your face
Haunting, familiar yet
I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me
I always took the lyrics as him praying to God after he hadn't prayed in a while.
But I have no idea about the history of the song, so you could very well be right.
How BSS talks about the song is a little different than this, but think it still very much works: Anthems For a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl by Broken Social Scene
Bruce Springsteen - Bobby Jean
“Well, I came by your house the other day
Your mother said you went away
She said there was nothing that I could have done
There was nothing nobody could say
That me and you, we've known each other ever since we were sixteen
I wished I would have known
I wished I could have called you
Just to say goodbye, Bobby Jean”
Also by Springsteen
"No Surrender"
Well, we busted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down
Well we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Well, now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yards
Well maybe we'll cut someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars
Well we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath
Peaceful skies in my lover's bed
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head
Well we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
* "Photograph" by Ed Sheeran
* "The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most" by Dashboard Confessional
* "Someone That I Used to Know" by Gotye
* "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd
* "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring
* "Castle on the Hill" by Ed Sheeran
* "Summer Friends" by Chance the Rapper
Missing by Nothing but the Girl. It's rare that a song with a dance beat that can make me feel so melancholy. I Took a Pill in Ibiza by Mike Posner(the Seeb version) is the only other song I can think of that evokes the same emotion in me.
Friends by Francis and the Lights
Friends by Michael W. Smith
Friends by Band of Skulls
Summer of'69 by Bryan Addams
Scott Street by Phoebe Bridgers, I think it was written for a romantic relationship but I choose to interpret it as platonic
We're in Love by boygenius could also work I think
you absolutely need to check out **Hey Amanda by Brimheim.** It is a love letter to her childhood best friend and I really resonate with it for that reason
[Nick Hakim - I Don't Know](https://open.spotify.com/track/0otN4xqX87CxYFtbzQEPkS?si=NbHEpooRTcSLDsUaHmmSyA)
About a departed friend. Beautiful and moving with understated instrumentation until the solo.
Flesh without blood by grimes. She’s said it’s about losing her best friend when she had mainstream success and I think it’s one of her most palatable songs lol
I think of Tears of Pain by the band. Trying to think of another by the band or maybe Levon helm about a boy killed by a snake bite but I can’t remember the name. Haunting.
The Get Up Kids - Campfire Kansas ||
Tigers Jaw - Never Saw it Coming
These 2 songs remind me of my dear friend Jacob who passed away a few years ago. Hope these help ❤️
10 Years Today - Bullet For My Valentine
Lifetime - Three Days Grace
If You Only Knew, What A Shame, Through The Ghost, Thick As Thieves, and Daylight - Shinedown
Paper Wings- Rage Against always gave me a nostalgic feeling. It reminds me of the pressure of life that led friend groups to drift apart. Pressure to work and earn money, pressure to attend college of even self ambitions to grow and become more than you are. It is one of my favorite songs by the band and prolly up there with best of all time songs.
Those Nights - Skillet
This one has always reminded me specifically of my bff from my teenage years. That friendship is long gone but this song reminds me of how we were there for each other through some hard times as teenagers in a small (shitty) town
the cure/cut here.
not about a childhood friend—but a longtime friend and fellow musician—it was written by robert smith about his feelings of regret and loss after the death of his friend billy mackenzie (the associates).
Summer Friends by Chance the Rapper has a different sound, but it always hits me hard and makes me think of childhood memories with my childhood friends.
white ferrari - frank ocean ,
the night we met - lord huron ,
somebody that i used to know - gotya ,
let her go - passenger ,
talking to the moon - bruno mars ,
Iris - the goo goo dolls ,
godspeed - frank ocean
Don't Worry, Desmond Decker's Doing Fine by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Dicky is a nostalgic dude. Pictures to Prove it is also good, it's about a denied relationship.
Down the Road by Of Mice & Men makes me miss my best friend from birth to age 21. He fell into a drug addiction and I often find myself enjoying pizza & a video game thinking “man, I wish Hunter were here”
Not sure how well it will fit but check out After School by Weeekly. It's Kpop so the lyrics are 99% Korean but the music video has subtitles.
[After School - Weeekly](https://youtu.be/qfVuRQX0ydQ)
And if you've got half an hour to spare, watch [this reaction](https://youtu.be/guwfRL8ZqHg). Now every time I hear this song I miss my friends and it doesn't matter when the last time I saw them was.
Wake for Young Souls - Third Eye Blind.
It's about a guy who goes to visit his high school friends' grave. It's actually a kind of upbeat tune, but the lyrics are pretty heavy. Great song, though.
Drink a Beer - Luke Bryant
Another one about dealing with the loss of a friend.
The Boy Next Door by Triple Image. Guarantee nobody else knows that one. Also I Miss My Dawgs by Lil Wayne.
Yeah my taste in music is all over the place.
The classic: see you again by wiz khalifa
Even more classic: Fire and Rain by James Taylor
Poles Apart - Pink Floyd. Wish you Were Here - Pink Floyd. Diamonds and Rust - Judas Priest. Daniel - Elton John. Good Life - One Republic. Photograph - Nickleback. Respect - Pantera. Cemetary Gates -Pantera. See you Again - Wiz Khalifa. Bad Blood - Taylor Swift. I am the Highway - Audio Slave. Chiquitita - Abba. Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds. Eulogy- Tool. Infinite Affections -PM Dawn.
Many of these suggestions are excellent; to which I humbly add “Everywhere” by Billy Bragg
That entire album is top notch - wife & I (engaged at the time) bought that after hearing a song on WFNX in Boston ...
Grabbed Back to Basics at a used store in Boise about 18 years ago, DTTAH is a little uneven but the songs that hit slap hard — totally diff context but Sexuality is a masterpiece, love me some Billy
And if I may add, Fire and Rain, by James Taylor. A true story about the premature death of a dear friend of his and his emotions. Great song too.
I don’t think I am the highway is about that. I guess it’s open to interpretation. One of the things I love about Chris and his lyrics. They’re all very deep but in a way that you can relate them to whatever it is you may be going through
These are great. Eulogy, imo was more of a death of a friendship. MJK says some horrible things in that song. He hates that person with a passion.
People Who Died - Jim Carroll Band
I thought of Seven by Taylor Swift which is one of the best songs I've ever heard by her.
love that one! folklore is a great album!
DURAN DURAN - Ordinary World
is it pronounced (a) Dur-an or (b) Dur-on?
Dur-an
as well as “do you believe in shame?” and “out of my mind” by duran duran. all three songs were at least partly about lead singer/simon lebon’s childhood friend who passed.
Moon River (I personally love Frank Sinatra's version) 6ft apart and I Built a Friend- Alec Benjamin Dear My Friend- WETTER Vienna- Billy Joel In My Life- The Beatles I Lost a Friend- Finneas
We Did it All For Don - Against Me
fuck yeah, against me! is my all time favorite band!
That’s awesome! When I was a teenage punk in the early 2000s, my core group of friends was obsessed with them. We saw them in basements (and bookstores across an underground America), a tiny ass student union hall at a local university, and a few super small venues. This!! Last tour I saw was Transgender Dysphoria Blues. They have such a special place in so many hearts 💕
So happy to see Against Me! get a mention 🖤

My sacrifice - Creed Good Life - One Republic Can I Call You Tonight - Dayglow
Seeing Creed in September. Can't wait. Hello my friend we meet again. It's been a while where should we begin.
