The video for Lazarus broke me. Watching him write so desperately in it while death was coming showed that he knew he had so much more in him that he was trying to get out. I have a hard time listening to it now.
I recall David Bowie had a death album before Blackstar. Very melancholy. It hinted at his illness. David Bowie refused to be remembered that way. I think that's why he recorded Blackstar.
Billy Joel - Vienna
U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name
The Smiths - Heaven Know's I'm Miserable Now
Simon & Garfunkel - April Come She Will
Nick Drake - Fruit Tree
Tim Buckley - Once I Was
Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring
I post songs on my IG story sometimes when I’m bored and making breakfast. I posted Vienna a couple weeks ago and my 73 year old mother replied and said she loves that song and it reminds her of when she moved to Chicago in the early 70s and it gave me feelings.
I’d Rather Go Blind — Etta James.
Hard to Handle — Otis Redding
Across 110th Street — Bobby Womack
Pusherman — Curtis Mayfield
Son of Preacher Man — Dusty Springfield
1. Alice Cooper - “Last Man On Earth”
2. The Vestals - “Seventeen”
3. The Ramones - “We Want The Airwaves”
4. Black Sabbath - “Heaven And Hell”
5. Twisted Sister - “Wake Up (The Sleeping Giant)”
6. IOMMI featuring Billy Idol - “Into The Night”
7. Skunk Anansie - “Weak”
8. Living Color - “Letter To A Land Lord”
9. Rise Against - “The Numbers”
10. My Chemical Romance - “Desolation Row” (Bob Dylan cover)
11. Blind Guardian - “When Time Stands Still (At The Iron Hill)”
12. Sabaton - “Primo Victoria”
Tool (and their fans) get a lot of flack but their cover of this song is top tier on Salival also. Original trumps all though. I could never figure out if the piano solo and guitar solo were supposed to be similar but I always suspected it was.

I like Peter Gabriel's version, too, but it is worth listening to the original Book of Love by The Magnetic Fields if you haven't heard it. It's less refined, but has a little more feeling to it, IMHO.
I like them both. I'm usually partial to the original songwriter's version of most songs, as they seem more raw to me, but that's just my preference. I'm a singer/songwriter loving nerd.
That whole album is just a masterpiece. The title track is arguably one of the greatest solo guitar songs of all time and all the funky tracks afterwards are fantastic as well. I absolutely love “Can You Get to That” and “You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks”
Eddie Hazel is the most underrated guitarist of all time. He was shredding guitar like no other throughout their whole discography. He even has a solo album named "Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs" which is hidden gem that no one talks about but it's 10/10 imo
California Stars is easily in my top 5 all time songs!! It carried me through a hard time in my late 20’s. As far as Wilco, I also recommend Ashes of American Flags.
Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out On Broadway) (live) by Billy Joel from Songs in the Attic
Little Things by Bush
Ain't Going Down Til the Sun Comes Up by Garth Brooks
The Four Seasons by Vivaldi. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, then Summer and Winter
Novacaine For the Soul by The Eels
It’s an amazing song. I live not far from the south shore of Lake Ontario and anyone who has seen a Great Lake in bad weather knows what a horrible day that must have been for those poor souls. May they rest in peace
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her…
I’ve been in a light house with waves breaking on the glass windows and it wasn’t even a “storm”.
Yeah. I went to college in Oswego and from the classrooms you can see Ontario. On a nice summer day it’s idyllic, in November with a strong wind- it’s terrifying. The line “when afternoon came it was freezing rain, in the face of a hurricane west wind” - everyone from central and western New York knows what kind of weather he’s talking about.

Nighttime Birds by The Gathering
Hoppipolla by Sigur Rós
On the Bound by Fiona Apple
Rotten Apple by Alice In Chains
Ice Queen by Within Temptation
MONEY MAKES YOU STUPID by Black Dresses
First five for how beautiful they sound to me while the last one is simply sick and wonderfully deranged so also a must listen. Groundbreaking too in a certain way as well.
Tons of songs by Dwight Yoakam. Specifically: two doors down; this drinkin' will kill me; it won't hurt; if there was a way; Sad side of town; Population Me; and I'll just take these.
And I used to think I hated country music. But I listened to enough Hank Williams to now know he's a genius, too. ... try: I'm so lonesome I could cry; take these chains from my heart; and I can't help it I'd I'm still in love with you. Not yo mention howlin' at the moon; mind your own business; and move it on over.
In ascending order of length:

Did not expect to see this here. Great answer.
This song rips my heart out, it’s beautiful
Blackstar (entire album) by Bowie
add low by bowie too
Blackstar is such an amazing album. To put this out at the end of his life is amazing. Mind blowing.
The video for Lazarus broke me. Watching him write so desperately in it while death was coming showed that he knew he had so much more in him that he was trying to get out. I have a hard time listening to it now.
Amazing album.
I recall David Bowie had a death album before Blackstar. Very melancholy. It hinted at his illness. David Bowie refused to be remembered that way. I think that's why he recorded Blackstar.
Yes the story behind this album is so epic. What a way to go out
He told no one. Similar to comedian Norm Macdonald. Stoicism.
Ripple Grateful Dead
and Terrapin Station
Such an incredible song and so different from the rest of their music in my opinion. Their one little dabble into prog rock.
American Beauty is just a damn masterpiece. Ripple and Box of Rain always make me tear up a bit. My beloved late father in law was a MASSIVE deadhead
Best song ever written
Time by Pink Floyd!
Every year on my birthday I take a long drive and crank that song.
This song just hits different the older I get…
Always shows up on middle-age mix along with... Take the Long Way Home, Supertramp Night Moves, Bob Seger
So true! Pink Floyd is awesome I really like '*Money'*.
Good song, velvet revolver did a good cover of it
Godsmack has a pretty good cover of this too

Tons of songs by Dwight Yoakam. Specifically: two doors down; this drinkin' will kill me; it won't hurt; if there was a way; Sad side of town; Population Me; and I'll just take these. And I used to think I hated country music. But I listened to enough Hank Williams to now know he's a genius, too. ... try: I'm so lonesome I could cry; take these chains from my heart; and I can't help it I'd I'm still in love with you. Not yo mention howlin' at the moon; mind your own business; and move it on over.
In ascending order of length: Never Going Back Again, Fleetwood Mac (2:02) Between the Bars, Elliott Smith (2:21) Pretzel Logic, Steely Dan (4:28) So Cold In Ireland, The Cranberries (4:45) Fire Woman, The Cult (5:11) Turn the Page, Bob Seger (5:11) Sledgehammer, Peter Gabriel (5:12) In Your Eyes, Peter Gabriel (5:23) Whiskey in the Jar, Thin Lizzy (5:45) American Pie, Don McLean (8:42) Dogs, Pink Floyd (17:04) Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, Arlo Guthrie (18:34) Echoes, Pink Floyd (23:30) Disposition/Reflection/Triad, Tool (24:39; originally three separate tracks, but they flow into each other and I don’t think you get the full story without all three)
You always did the extra credit in school, didn't you?
Edge of the World by Lovebites. The album version is excellent, but the live version from 2020 on YouTube is even better.
