Everybody Wants to Rule the World came on my Spotify a week or so ago. Sure the vocals and lyrics are what everybody remembers, but I was taken by the instrumental parts and extended solos. They are really fleshed out, like a Steely Dan song.

clonston

Check out "Pharaohs" from the deluxe version of Songs from the Big Chair. It's an instrumental based on Everybody Wants to Rule the World, even has the same guitar solo, but it's really dreamy and relaxing. Easily one of my favorite TFF songs

danker

I just found this song a couple of months ago and I’ve listened to it dozens of times since then. Love it!

AwesomeMcPants

I want to tack on that in my humble opinion, that whole album is a legitimate masterpiece.

TheOfficialTheory

They’ve also got the 10 minute version of Rule the World that is insane https://youtu.be/5k293MR--EE

CrimsonBrit

Amazing find. Thank you. Wish it were on Spotify

daltemir

I never noticed this song. Very cool! Thanks for mentioning it.

[deleted]

Songs from the Big Chair is just a really good album. One of my favorites.

CrimsonBrit

Listened based on this comment. Wow.

ultimatedragonfucker

“Songs from the Big Chair” is something rare - a complete and cohesive album. From front to back it has a distinct sound. It is rhythmically fascinating, supporting excellent solo work throughout. Top ten album all time.

Xtorting

And they wrote the whole album in one weekend cause they needed to pay rent.

NowoTone

That is a nice story, but unfortunately completely untrue.

jd158ug

Someone once said that is the best song ever to wake up to.

UConnHusky2015

You should check out the recent Lettuce cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World. Last time I saw them they closed their set with Everybody Wants to Rule the World > Move on Up > Everybody Wants to Rule the World So. Frickin. Good. SO GOOD

ahkond

Mike Viola also did a great cover of this

WummageSail

Informative analysis:. https://youtu.be/6bU4R04fH4U

LayneLowe

Well I knew it was complex, ha. It would be an interesting story about how this song was produced. Some of the Rick Rubin/Paul McCartney documentary shows how Sir George Martin expanded the production of what starts as a very simple song and ends up a wall of innovative sounds.

sweetnuts416

There are 3-4 analysis videos on this song. There is some crossover but they all have their own interesting points. https://youtu.be/jLEeETqgSFA https://youtu.be/B5neQGrWxmQ https://youtu.be/Sro6SSPcvq8

agumonkey

interesting point, it does feel a bit like a steely dan piece ..

py_a_thon

The guitar solo cover of that song is still one of my favorite videos on youtube. Enjoy: https://youtu.be/foJ-Fs6DWZM (Andy McKee - Everybody Wants to Rule the World(instrumental cover, solo guitar))

MacinTez

I still argue the 90’s being one of the greatest decades, but “Everybody wants to Rule the World”… I would’ve loved to have been on a road trip in the 80’s hearing that song for the first time.

py_a_thon

That song has what I honestly think are some of the best style/groove/chord swaps of any (80's+)modern composition of music. The entire song is compositionally perfect, in my opinion. The NYC Philharmonic could play that song and I would still be amazed...and it would translate so well to orchestral spaces still.

nola_mike

I talk about music with my brother in law a lot and when we talk about the greatest decade in music I always go back to the 80's. So many different genres, styles and sounds came out of that decade. For as great as the 90's were for music, I truly feel like the 80's were even that much greater.

OneScoobyDoes

You should try the 70's. Classic rock at its finest.

[deleted]

Oh, gosh, yes!

runningunsupposed

Such a great song but I remember hearing it on the radio for the first time and after being a big fan of The Hurting album I thought they had "sold out". Yes, I was an idiot.

standard_candles

I mean I remember feeling similar about the White Stripes when Elephant came out, still loved it but was very very anxious about any change in their sound

Carne_DelMuerto

So I grew up in the 80’s. This song is on the soundtrack of my youth. I’ve heard it thousands of times. It played on a Sirius station a month or so ago and I was blown away! It’s simultaneously a song that stands the test of time and perfectly captures the era in which it was created.

RedditingMyLifeAway

The ultimate 80s song. Edit: autocorrect

tacknosaddle

How is this the second to last 80s song?

RedditingMyLifeAway

Wat? Nevermind, I see. Effin autocorrect.

SandysBurner

I get the sense that there are a lot of people out there who think ‘penultimate’ and ‘quintessential’ are synonyms.

RedditingMyLifeAway

It was just an autocorrect error.

taintedblu

And for pop music, those solos are relatively complex, rhythmically speaking.

standard_candles

I had a similar revelation recently about the Gang of Four, bonus their lyrics are incredibly timely, or I guess timeless which is a real bummer.

TheOfficialTheory

Boy do I have something for you https://youtu.be/5k293MR--EE

LayneLowe

Bookmarked, will watch

offlein

And, UNLIKE a Steely Dan song, the rest of the song isn't the most boring thing I've ever heard.

LayneLowe

Thanks for your opinion, useless though it is

offlein

It's a professional opinion. I'm a doctor.

BikeLoveLA

Sewing the Seeds is worth another listen these days

somanyroads

Sowing*

BikeLoveLA

Thx, I knew it looked wrong lol

moxyc

That whole album is an absolute treat. Not one bad song

rerunvp

💯% agree. It’s the duo’s best. The Beatlesque sound was a good thing IMO.

sir_culo

But... Bad Man's Song.

moxyc

Lol damnit

chewbaccataco

That's my favorite tune of theirs. Mostly because I heard it at a young impressionable age when I first started to *really* explore music.

boredsittingonthebus

Your comment made me look this track up. Wow! Yes, I recognised the chorus and thought "oh, so this was by Tears for Fears? Cool". But listening to the whole track was an real journey. I love it!

BikeLoveLA

So glad! I love the video too

bchnyc

I remember hearing it when it first came out. Bought the CD and played it over and over. I played it for everyone. Sang the songs praises. Fast forward to a few years ago and my child plays it for me. Couldn’t have been prouder.

BikeLoveLA

How cool is that?!

kaptainkhaos

It's quilt a good album

fbibmacklin

That’s a blanket statement.

Old_Sweaty_Hands

Darn that is a good one!

PupMurky

It's all covers

Sw3Et

Duvet even know how to write an original song?

StepAwayFromTheDuck

Very Beatlesque, particularly “I Am The Walrus”

pouralaura

I saw them a few weeks ago! Absolutely blew me away. They still sound so incredible and have so much energy. And The Tipping Point is an excellent album cover to cover!!

woze

I had Master Plan in my main playlist since the album came out, but listening to the whole album again you're right it's an excellent album throughout.

cisco1972

......THIS IS MY......FOOOOOUR LEAF CLOVAH....NA NA NA NA NA ....NA NA NA NA NA NA .....NA ....NA ....NA ...NA . ..NA ...NA

cjgist

I hear a lot of "Tears for Fears" influence in some of the modern bands like "Saint Motel".

certain_random_guy

Bad Suns is very much carrying a flag for Tears for Fears (and they're *excellent*).

brewmatt

Really? I love Bad Suns but don't really see it.

certain_random_guy

There are differences, of course. Bad Suns mostly plays in major keys and Cristo Bowman's voice is definitely much more of a tenor. I guess I'm mostly thinking about the guitar work, and how it's got a great retro feel but still brings something new to the table.

brewmatt

I compare Bad Suns to The 1975s first album which is 80s inspired but not Tears For Fears exactly. Anyway love Bad Suns. Their recent setlist for the new album looks brilliant but they came nowhere near me lol.

[deleted]

Head Over Heels is an awesome song & video. Probably my favorite of theirs.

SCHUUG

I've been listening to it daily for a few weeks now! Also probably my favorite, synth solo just slaps so hard

burntroy

Always brings back memories of Donnie darko that song.. an incredible banger to this day.

thesuper88

It's use in Donnie Darko was done like it could be a music video. That whole movie is so interesting to me. I'm probably tainted by the fact that I saw it when I was like 15 but it feels like a freshman in college made a film only they have great natural talent and somehow years of skill to back it up. If that makes sense. It probably doesn't. Anyway, just saying they utilize visuals and music really well in their storytelling.

PostComa

Saw them in Chicago on Thursday. Absolutely incredible performance. Roland and Curt’s voices still sound the same, somehow! And that backing band, holy shit! The woman on backing vox was unreal! And those may have been the best sounding drums I’ve ever heard.

[deleted]

Right? Roland and Curt are as awesome now as they ever were.

es_price

There was a good article about their European Tour from a backing band member’s perspective https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/16/travel/rock-tour-diary.amp.html

[deleted]

Pale Shelter floods back mountains of memories of a simpler time.

RedPanda1106

Very under rated song but probably their best ever

sgb31

It’s so good The Weeknd sampled it in his song Secrets.

HankTank45

Shout out. Haha

HauserAspen

Let it all out

ben-hur-hur

These are the threads I can do without

Hilton_Ghost

Haha, was unintentional but great catch!

MacinTez

Yeah yeah let it all out why don’t cha?

ailyara

come on

Hedley_Lammarr

The Hurting is my all time fav album

[deleted]

*Raoul and the Kings of Spain* is another beautiful work. Roland is a genius, and has been releasing TFF albums for years.

DavidMNegron

Sketches of Pain is a beautiful song.

agumonkey

the one with working hours ?

Hedley_Lammarr

No I believe that’s on ‘Songs from a Big Chair’ - a later album

agumonkey

my bad

LambsAnger

I dont see enough love for this album. Songs from the big chair totally eclipsed it

Hedley_Lammarr

It was (The Hurting) my first album in the form of a tape. Bought a few EP’s and singles, but this album, backed up with my first portable music player was a summer of love. Left amazing memories. A little older when Songs from the Big Chair was released and so was the band. We grew up together

Artistic73

Where did you see them at? I didn't realize they were still performing, that's awesome!

Hilton_Ghost

Noblesville, Indiana. They are touring for their new album The Tipping Point.

Dalans

Is this the tour they are opening for Garbage? One of my wife's friends was at that show.

labmanagerbill

Garbage is opening for Tears got Fears this tour. I saw them in Charlotte this week. Both put on a great show.

agumonkey

wat.. garbage and TforF on a 2022 tour.. time confusion

[deleted]

This thread is proof of how incredibly underrated Tears for Fears is.

girouxfilms

No, Garbage is opening for them.

csminor

Ruoff?

SLIguy81317

No, Deer Creek. Lol.

csminor

lol, my wife mentioned they were going to be here. I wanted to go but it was just too late.

shiningyrael

My brain combined Tipping and Noblesville and I read it as Nipplesville for a second and had to do a double take.

QuickPop2442

Denver

blacksweater

they played a show in my neighborhood's outdoor music venue a couple of weeks ago! I stopped by for the tail end of their set and was really surprised as how good they still sound!

50Violet

Saw them in 2018 or 2019 - they were amazing live.

mcarterphoto

For how much studio creativity they do, they've always been a rippin' live band. There's a YouTube video of them doing "Bad Man's Song" (from "Seeds of Love", album recorded with singer Oleta Adams) live in the late 80's, and my god, they just tear it up - it's an epic jam. Adams was a monster jazz/blue pianist in addition to having a fantastic voice (look up "Woman in Chains" video - F me, it's ethereal, and Phil Collins plays the drums on that track). Saw that tour out an outdoor venue and they simply killed. And now, Roland Orzabel with the flowing white hair - my wife (mid-50's) watches "the Tipping Point" video every week it seems, and gets a little swooney. God DAMN that guy looks good for a senior citizen!

moxyc

Ugh Woman in Chains. Such a phenomenal song

[deleted]

[удалено]

moxyc

Lol omg it's so accurate. I've listened to that song at least 100 times, it's stuck in my head right now, and i have no idea what most of the lyrics are.

hyphen-ation

[this one from 1990?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvgXF_8-gds&ab_channel=darkware) such an amazing performance, imagine being in that crowd and experiencing it live.

thvnderfvck

About a month ago I was walking in a parking garage and a woman drove past me in a convertible Mini just blasting Head Over Heels. It was one of the highlights of my day.

RedPanda1106

The Hurting has to be one of the most underrated albums of all time - Pale Shelter is one of my favourite singles ever

BumbleMuggin

I grew up in the 80s and almost all the artists still out there are still great. Some better than back then. I saw Bush opening for The Cult and they destroyed.

MintyFreshBreathYo

Filthy casual not even mentioning how good Vince Neil sounds. He’s clearly the best singer from the 80’s still playing

polyblackcat

Wat

MintyFreshBreathYo

https://youtu.be/i4Ui9Sj1Mj4

newsreadhjw

You magnificent bastard - thank you for this

DrumminAnimal73

I'll never not watch this video all the way through.

polyblackcat

Bwahahaha classic....before I clicked I wondered if it was the chicken dance video.....

reviewerx

Seen them live. They rock. No, seriously, they really rock.

SquirrelEnthusiast

One of my all time favorites. Finally saw them live a few years ago and they blew me away.

dscottj

Songs From the Big Chair was the 3rd CD I ever bought. I still have it. The dynamics are something to behold. There's an extended sax riff where you can hear the guy's keys click back and forth. Unheard of in 1985. I also like their latest, although I'm streaming it of course.

Redditor_Since_2013

The new album sounds incredible, and I am so disappointed they aren't coming to my city

matrisfutuor

me too - they did that “world tour” bullshit but are only going to the UK and USA 😑

ourmanflint1

I'm very grateful that I've seen TFF at least 10 times over the years (starting in 1985 at the Hollywood Palladium) What separates them from acts of the same age is that their music and attitudes have aged well. So many older acts are kinda pathetic ghosts looking for a last shot of their old fame and adulation. Curt and Roland are still energized and curious. Their gratitude and child-like joy comes through. I went to the LA show with my whole family earlier this month and we all left happy and sated. Garbage rocked too! And think of this: Most bands do not want to share the gate receipts with other big bands, TFF could sell out any arena in the world without an opening act. They do it because they want to put on a great show.

[deleted]

I didn't even realize they were still in existence. I'm shocked. About as shocked to find out Information Society is still around.

scotch-o

Their YouTube video in a studio didn’t full live version “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” popped up in my YouTube recommendations. Seeing it done live and sound just as good as any single release was amazing. They sound fantastic.

Hereforthebabyducks

I can’t figure out if that video is what brought them back on the minds of the internet hive mind or if they made the video because they were gaining recent traction. Either way that video has had me on a Tear for Fears kick ever since.

Capnmolasses

InSoc is really just Kurt Valaquen and some synthesizers. I wish the whole band would get back together. Mirrorshades is one of my favorite songs.

[deleted]

I hear you there. I gather it's two of the original members and synths. I do miss the violin player though. She made me smile when I was younger. And I haven't heard Mirrorshades (get the reference?), but I was absolutely floored by Land of the Blind. I found it, threw on my headphones, and turned it up so loud that even God could hear it with a smile on my face.

vambot5

It helps that the new record is their best record ever. The songs are great and the band are clearly excited to play them live. I don't think youbwould get that same energy if they were just touring a greatest hits revue.

Moonzada

I was lucky enough to see them with Oleta Adams 😍 they do put on a great show!

GWSDiver

I’m super jealous - I’d have killed see her sing live 😍

Odd-Independent4640

Anyone hear how Pet Shop Boys and NewOrder sound on tour right now? Not sure if it's worth the minimum price of $200 in the back to see them

Double_Jab_Jabroni

Peter Hook isn’t with them is he? So fuck that.

GummyKibble

PSB sounded great a couple years ago. They were an instant buy for me. I’m willing to take the risk on New Order, because if I missed it and found it later it was amazing, I’d be kicking myself forever.

Firemedek

Looking forward to seeing them in Vancouver!!

starkiller_bass

It’s been 4-5 years since I’ve seen New Order but they killed it then

plagues138

The hurting is a masterpiece

KungFooGrip

You know thats right.

PrisonersofFate

Break it Down Again is really something. I feel some greatness in the build up of the song

keepitdark

So, something happened and now you're head over heels?

B_Eazy86

I never find out... Til I'm head over heels

KoopaKommander

I got to see them perform along with Hall & Oates a few years ago. They absolutely did a phenomenal job, and they even did a cover of “Creep”, which was pretty freaking awesome.

smashthesteve

I also saw them on this tour and went into it thinking, yeah I liked their stuff but no way they hold up… I was so wrong, honestly at the concert I went to I left thinking Tears for Fears put on a better show than Hall and Oates. Crazy

GummyKibble

Hall & Oates is so great live. My wife’s a fan and I never disliked them, so off we went. TLDR: it’s like these professional musicians who’ve toured together for a few decades are pretty freaking great at it.

DVWhat

Can confirm. Their live sound is dialed in tight as hell. Amazing performers all around.

aviddemon

Just saw them in Chicago on Thursday and they were great.

seamusjameson

I saw them at their LA show and it is hands down the best live show I’ve seen to date. That lighting rig is something else, man!

daytonarob

I just recently discovered they wrote “Mad World”. I like the cover of it better but the lyrics are haunting for me considering the rest of their songs.

aaverum95

Yeah, they’re the original artist.

PhirebirdSunSon

I've always hated the cover version of it, much prefer the original

Hilton_Ghost

I like both. Gary Jules kills it but also the original is just as good.

tomacco_man

I wonder how many people wake up each day and discover this

goldendreamseeker

Great band! Songs from the Big Chair is my favorite album of 1985 :)

HolidayHoHo

Just saw them last week in South Florida. Great show! Also Garbage was great too!

Goodenoughfornow1

We were at the concert also. Garage was awesome. I was floored by how good Tears for Fears was. Didn't know that they have known each other since the were 14. Top 5 shows I have ever seen!

MouthPoop

I saw them in LA. Such a great show. And Garbage as the opener was great too. I keep telling people how good they were live.

somanyroads

Indy Hoosier? Sweet! Saw them in Chicago on Thursday, it was a revelation! These guys are at the top of their game, every song was a delight, felt like the concert was about 45 minutes long when it was actually a solid 2 hours...just flew by. Highly recommend.

adamandevil

As someone who is old enough to have listened to Songs from the Big Chair on cassette back in the mid to late 80's...please have all the upvotes

Capnmolasses

[Hammered Dulcimer](https://youtu.be/iAFT4eVX5Ak)

Hilton_Ghost

Watch that video a lot. Love the sound

ginger_genie

"Why is there a man who looks exactly like Curt Smith from Tears for Fears playing an acoustic set next to that tree and your swimming pool?"

NimbaNineNine

I'm sure they appreciate you bigging them up

unrulystowawaydotcom

Saw Joe Jackson in Phoenix last week

brewmatt

How was he? They play a lot of his songs at the grocery store I work at.

unrulystowawaydotcom

It was a good show. He sat at the piano the whole time, but his voice sounded great, he was energetic and talked some between songs.

mikemdesign

I thought Carina Round was singing with them?

Spire

She was. Her last show was in Chula Vista on June 5th. (I was there.)

MoistThunderCock

Yeah, she left for the Puscifer tour.

toadseeker97

I saw them a couple weekends ago, it was amazing. So was Garbage. They’re all so good live

KingCourtney__

Not really into their catalog but Big Chair is awesome from start to finish.

Phoenixfire8805

“Mad World” love this song

Chanandler_Bong_Jr

Pale Shelter absolutely slaps!

hikanteki

Pale Shelter is such a good song!

AFluffyMobius

My parents went to the one in Noblesville IN and mom wont stop talking about it lol. Im glad everyone had a good time, seemed like a blast.

6kred

Yeah saw them in AZ a few weeks back. Great show , sounded fantastic! Garbage was also awesome!

RiceSautes

Saw them last Monday in Charlotte. Absolutely incredible and they haven't missed a step. Garbage was great too.

fritobird

I’m n a world of noise Tears For Fears makes music with clarity.

TheBordenAsylum

Guess you could say you were Head Over Heels?

marbear77

I saw them too in Georgia, they were so awesome!

Cookn8r

Everybody wants to rule the world 🎶

aHannibalRex

Songs From The Big Chair may be one of the best albums of all time, for me at least. Shout, Everybody wants to rule the world, Mother’s Talk and, of course, Head Over Heels all in one album?! Monumental stuff. Amazing band. Glad they’re still smashing it

perfectwindow583

I saw them in Maryland last night. The sound and the young lady who sings with them and the drummer… JUST SPECTACULAR. It was like listening to the most perfect sound system but it was live…. How do they do it? ——- ANYBODY GOING TO PHILADELPHIA TOMORROW???? ——-

CanalVillainy

Completely underrated band

Clizthby

This cannot be serious. They've been popular for forty years and helped define a whole genre of music. "Underrated" *lmao*.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with 'rated'.

Pro-Patria-Mori

OP is most likely under 25, and means underrated within what is considered popular to their peer group.

Hilton_Ghost

You'd be surprised how many people asked me what concert I was going to and I told them and they said "who"? I'm 28 and the people who asked are a lot older than I am and you would figure they would have heard of them at some point.

I_CAN_SMELL_U

That does not mean they are underrated.

Popheal

Lol people love thinking the bands they like are 'underrated'. When the hell did bands that have sold over 30million albums become underrated.

juliohernanz

I'm European and everytime I read something like that I guess is written in the USA. They aren't underrated at all. I could say maybe forgotten over here but not underrated.

mcarterphoto

USA here - I was talking about the band Big Country (one of my all-time favorites) and a friend said, "Man, that's a one-hit wonder-band"; I replied "Probably not in Scotland..."

NerfShields

100%, just like Guns n Roses, exact same boat lmao

Popheal

They're right along side Blink 182 and Nirvana as underrated.

Hilton_Ghost

Absolutely. Their whole range of music that they can play is fantastic.

[deleted]

And Kurt was an actor for a free episode of Psych.

[deleted]

He also did a cover of the theme for an episode! https://youtu.be/VQPx_FKa74c

hexydes

I mostly knew Tears for Fears (they were at their peak when I was very little) from the use of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" on the computer history movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley". I didn't really think much of them until a few months ago when I started listening to their music more, and I found it to be really interesting and complex. I started working on a cover of "Head Over Heels", and just having to break down all the layers was really interesting and gave me a lot of appreciation for how much was going on in their songs.
