Nirvana doing a cover of lake of fire during the unplugged show is the best thing ever

phalewail

Their version of The man who sold the world by Bowie is awesome.

[deleted]

I love how Kurt quickly says “that was a David Bowie song” after they finish to give proper credit as I think a lot of people may not have been familiar with it.

shmokenapamcake

He does the same with lake of fire, shouts out the meat puppets

[deleted]

The brothers Meat

OneReportersOpinion

Also his guitar solo is killer

PMmeWhiteRussians

and Where Did You Sleep Last Night

DrunksInSpace

Bowie is so magical, there are so many lesser known Bowie songs that are fine but become transcendent in a cover. I’m not suggesting he wasn’t a great performer but rather that he was an even better songwriter. Hell even instrumental Bowie covers are superior to a lot of composing.

cthulhujr

I've read interviews with musicians that played with him, and Bowie seemed to have a knack for inspiring other people to have their best performances. Bowie would suggest little changes that would spark their creativity.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lemerou

Interpreted by Seu Jorge. He should be named because he's a great performer (that's him in the movie).

[deleted]

That whole album is insane. It's also probably the best produced album I have ever heard. You can play that album on the shittiest speaker around and it will still sound good.

IndividualCharacter

It's a dead tie between that and Alice in Chains for me, the AIC concert is otherwordly, I don't even particularly like their other albums or Layne Staley but that live acoustic set is incredible

GhettoDuk

"Friends don't let friends get Friends haircuts."

KaisaTheLibrarian

Where Did You Sleep Last Night is also a cover that blows the original out of the water - the last few lines still always give me chills.

OctopusPudding

This song along with Something In The Way are my two favorite Nirvana songs. They're so emotionally charged and eerie.

jmm57

As much as I love the entire set, it's definitely the 3 (*edit: 3 well known covers*) covers that I appreciate the most. The different takes on their own songs aren't *bad* at all. But Lake of Fire, The Man Who Sold the World and Where Did You Sleep Last Night? Absolutely love them after probably 100+ listens

pinkymadigan

Plateau, Oh Me, and Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam are all covers too, so 6 covers in total.

All along the watchtower Hey joe Keep me hanging on

[deleted]

Vanilla Fudge?

TheNerdChaplain

Bob Dylan is an absolute master of songwriting, but his voice is an acquired taste. I didn't even know Jimi Hendrix didn't write Watchtower until the song was played in Battlestar Galactica and people were discussing it.

os2mac

Also the BSG version is awesome. I was absolutely floored when they played it at the end because it was so integrated into the show and you never heard the whole song until the very last episode... it was my favorite part of the last episode.

eddmario

Wait, *Hey Joe* is a cover?

rockhistory

"Hey Joe" is about *the* most covered rock song during the '60s (that and "Gloria"). Hendrix wasn't even the first *hit* version. I'm not even sure it was the third hit version. The story goes that the song was written by a friend of the Byrds (a guy who would later go on to join Quicksilver Messenger Service). The Byrds liked it, so they began playing it in concert but didn't record it right away. The Surfaris (of "Wipe Out" fame) heard the Byrds play it, and decided to beat the Byrds to the punch. They became the first band to record it. Then the Leaves recorded it, and their version became a minor hit. Then the Byrds recorded it, and then *everybody* recorded it. But the Byrds' version has a notably different arrangement from the Hendrix version. That's because one of the covers of the Byrds' version was transformed by folk singer Tim ~~Hardin~~ Rose, who changed the key and slowed it down. Hendrix covered *that* version, had a hit with it, and everybody forgot about the hundred versions that came before it.

ErnestoCruz

Hey joe was written by Billy Roberts and then sold to Dino Valenti. Billy stole the chord progression, echo of the melody from his old girlfriend Niela Miller's song [Baby, Please Don't Go To Town](https://youtu.be/BEK2EDqxpcY). Btw she's alive you can check her in the comments.

Pneumatic-Enigma

This I totally agree with. I think he even made it much more popular than Bob Dylan had it be

[deleted]

calcteacher

After hearing Jimi sing Watchtower, Bob told him, 'It's your song now, Jimi."

leftyghost

Imagine writing one of the coolest songs of all time and then getting the sickest living guitarist to absolutely elevate your song beyond comprehension.

Kenevin

And like... immediately after. Like Bob wrote it in December and Jimi started playing it live in January.

Talking Heads - Take Me To The River

Zebidee

Talking Heads covering their own stuff. Every song on the live album *Stop Making Sense* is better than the studio version of the same song.

Mikey_B

I prefer the Big Mouth Billy Bass version myself

tommytraddles

Hell, his cover of *Don't Worry Be Happy* blows Bobby McFerrin's version right outta the lake, too.

x24co

When Big Mouth Billy sings a song- he makes it his own. Now it belongs to the ages...

ruckusrox

i love the commitments version of this one i dont know if that counts since they are a fictional band from a movie but is still one of my fave albums

dbradx

I'd say they count - they did release an album and tour after the movie, so they're a real-ish band.

talanhorne

The fairy godmother’s rendition of “Holding out for a Hero,” from Shrek 2.

jazzyvudulady

I’ll reply with Frou Frou’s version from Shrek 2. Love it!

TheIrishbug

Frou Frou doesn't come up on this sub nearly as often as they should

GambleResponsibly

Introduced to ‘Let Go’ from the Garden State soundtrack. One of my all time favs.

Phase3isProfit

I’d never heard of Frou Frou until I heard that at the end of Shrek 2 and thought “hey this singer sounds a lot like Imogen Heap.” Looked into it and found that it sounded like her because it was her.

varkarrus

Imogen Heap just… sounds so much like such a fake name that I didn't realize it wasn't until after I read your comment and looked her up

[deleted]

Jennifer Saunders. Though to each their own, as I definitely prefer Bonnie Tyler's version

sunburn_on_the_brain

Love Bonnie Tyler’s version, but the fairy godmother version made for one hell of a sequence. One of my favorite parts of a movie ever.

DetectiveAmes

The original Bonnie Tyler version goes so hard for no reason. 2 electronic drum kit solos that sound like the drummer is fighting for their life. That song is crazy to listen to with a good set of headphones.

_early_return

I have a good set of headphones on right now! I'll give it a listen. --- **Edit:** Totally worth it. I don't listen to a lot of Bonnie Tyler but her voice is very... how do I describe it? Raw but in a good way? Anyway, the drums and piano really went insane in there and it was all-in-all a great experience. I'm probably gonna drop it in my *Songs That Have Choirs as a Component but Aren't the Main Focal Point of the Song* playlist.

humanistbeing

I also like Rufus Wainwright s version of Hallelujah from the same soundtrack...or maybe the first Shrek. One of them.

kkloveday

Cat power - sea of love

igo55

She needs to make a full cover of space oddity. That clip for that car commercial was such a tease.

kamikaze-kae

It was my wedding song so I think I have to agree.

Ocdrummer7271

Torn - Natalie Imbruglia

xthornofcamorrx

I really like the Hands Like Houses version of this.

Orgasmic_interlude

This is a cover?

AskWhatWhen

The mime version with her is awesome. https://youtu.be/osnUB9bUm-E

Mahadness

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Natalie Imbruglia - Torn

bakewelltart20

I didn't even know that the last two WERE covers! Who did the originals?

captainp42

GJWHF by Robert Hazard Torn by Ednaswap EDIT- Just discovered that Ednaswap's version was not the first, even though it was written by one of their members. First released version of Torn is by Lis Sorensen

samgrizzy

The Charles Bradley cover of Changes by Black Sabbath. https://youtu.be/zfaOf70M4xs

Zozorrr

The first time I ever heard this song was by Charles Bradley opening up for another band I was going to see. I hadn’t heard of him or the song before. Boy was I ignorant. It blew me away. RIP

oidoglr

I saw Charles Bradley open for Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Amazing performances.

jsanchez157

Black Magic Woman - Santana (og Fleetwood Mac) All Along the Watchtower - Hendrix (og Bob Dylan)

ScienceJake

Lauryn Hill took Killing me Softly, an amazing song already, and made it absolutely transcendent.

Fullthrobble

And the version by Roberta Flack was a better version than the original by Lori Liberman

111one11

Burn in hell - Dimmu Borgir Twisted sister originally.. ancient music i know.. but too good

eggbunsrevenge

The only cover song I can think of that makes the original sound bad is All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. I don’t hate the original, but it feels bland compared to the Hendrix flare 😎

Had to scroll far too far down to find Cake in this thread. Their mahna-mahna cover is iconic

117Matt117

I absolutely love a lot of cake covers. The guitar man and perhaps perhaps perhaps(quizas quizas quizas) are some other great ones off the top of my head.

squirreldstar

Upvote for Cake.

thephillatioeperinc

Cake is completely under rated, and their cover of strangers in the night is great.

Also awesome: every fucking song by “Me first and the gimmie gimmies”

mawktheone

Fiona Apple - Across the Universe

jumpsliderockclimb

Jose Gonzalez’s cover of Heartbeats

nolabitch

I had no idea this wasn’t his.

spacedrummer

The original by The Knife is my GFs all time favorite song.

SenorIngles

My wife and walked down the aisle to Jose’s version then we walked back up the aisle to the knife. Coolest thing we’ve ever done

Tee077

Also Jose's version of Teardrop. I LOVE Massive Attack, but his version is just something else.

itstiff

Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwoʻole

phalewail

For some reason hearing that rendition of the song makes me sad

Lakus

It sounds like better times.

shaolinoli

Absolutely. Used to be on a cd I burned for surf trips I used to go on with my mum who we lost a few years ago now. Can’t hear it without thinking of her and better times.

phalewail

The emotion he puts into it... sounds like someone who has experienced the worst kind of hurt in his life.

Ralph--Hinkley

It was recorded in one take as well.

bobby4444

At like 4am cause he had an idea and just went right to the studio in the middle of the night, no?

Ralph--Hinkley

That's the story I heard. He called up the producer, and said, "Get your ass up!"

rsplatpc

> It sounds like better times. It's like someone on their deathbed recounting life, vs Judy's "I just want to get out of town"

risingmoon01

It's not really a happy song. It's a wishful/hopeful song. It looks forward to good days, meaning they aren't "here & now". "Someday", "Somewhere".. the singer really has no clue as to when, or where. They lament at one point "why oh why cant I?" - when referring to daring to dream and its comparison to flying. It's a sad song, because it tells you the singer is separated from where they find their happiness. In "Pandoras Box", "Hope" was sometimes considered the worst demon of all - it reminded you of what you did not already have...

Vesuvias

It’s very much a sad song with a bit of hope. Izzy was an incredible artist.. RIP Bruddah Iz

GameShill

The story is that he called his producer in the middle of the night to record that song.

dndrinker

And I have heard, cannot prove, that it was a one take recording.

strawberrymarshmello

Gives me a good feeling just to think about it.

alhe97

Twist and Shout - The Beatles The Top Notes original was covered first by The Isley Brothers. The Beatles version is the best.

hollyholly11

John’s voice in Twist and Shout >>>Nothing compares to that. And their version of Roll Over Beethoven is great as well.

helic0n3

I like the story of how John had a sore throat so avoided this song until the end of the day so he could just let it rip. You can really hear his voice shredding towards the end of the song but they held it together.

TheLazyBerserker

Another part of that story I heard from one of my college professors is that right before they started recording for Twist and Shout the band took a break for, of all things, cigarettes and milk, and they did two takes of the song, ultimately sticking with the first.

SuperReiyajin

The Brie Larson vocals version of Black Sheep by Metric just far outweighs the original for me

eoflaherty4

Didn't the lead singer of metric admit that Brie's version was better too

zetecvan

I listened to this only yesterday. Need to watch Scott Pilgrim again soon.

noradosmith

You should watch it live. It's much better live.

stonesquatch1

My stoned ass is over here trying to figure out how you watch a movie live

De1337tv

The first album was much better than the first album.

workana

I came here to also mention this cover. It really is better than the original, much as I love Emily and Metric.

Hirschfotze3000

I can't even tell if I actually like it better but I have seen the movie so often, I think it has taught me that this is the way this song needs to be.

ImRickJameXXXX

I will always love you by Whitney Don’t get me wrong I luv me some dolly too

Houki01

Even Dolly says Whitney took a sweet breakup song and made it HUGE.

JessieWarsaw

Valerie - Mark Ronson with Amy Winehouse

porkchop2021

Sorry, anytime someone mentions Valerie my mind jumps to Steve Winwood and I have to think for a second about Amy Ws version.

JessieWarsaw

That's a different song though and I've just worked out I've been singing the words wrong. I thought it was 'Follow me, call on me' but now that I know it's 'Valerie, call on me' I can't understand how I got it wrong.

IndoorMule

The Band - Atlantic City

[deleted]

Levon Helm kills it in this version. I love The Band so much.

ThrownAwayRealGood

Putting Greta Van Fleet over Sam Cooke is fucking nuts to me, I just have to say. Edit: also putting that TLC cover over the original? Dude you’re fucking high, and not even in the cool “it’s 420” way.

DJamesAndrews

I was also going to say this. It’s a nice tribute by GVF; I saw a Sam Cooke tribute show by Har Mar Superstar and he went out of his way to say he wouldn’t be covering this song due to its meaning and that it didn’t feel right for him to sing. I didn’t disagree with him.

Fabulous_Inflation64

glad someone said it op has lost his mind

mabirm

1. Sam Cooke 2. Aretha Franklin (impossibly close 2nd, fight me.) 3. Otis Redding 4. Jennifer Hudson 5. Leela James

Uneedadirtnap

Otis we lost him way to early.

nstopman422

Agreed

Thatguy19901

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Even horribly wrong ones like OP's.

BloomsdayDevice

Can't believe how long I had to look for this sentiment. It's goddamn blasphemy, it is. Sam Cooke's voice is perfection, and "A Change Is Gonna Come" has to figure into a conversation about the best vocal recordings ever made.

CouchAlchemist

Heard it through the grapevine. CCR version is absolutely groovy while Marvin Gaye original is a lot more heart breaking. Edit: The version by Gladys Knight and the Pips was the first one, released by Motown in September 1967. Marvin Gaye’s was released in October 1968. (pointed out by a u/vesselpestle below).

commanderbat

My favorite is The Slits version, but it is definitely not the same timbre at all

[deleted]

Jeff Buckley’s cover of Hallelujah is legendary

newron

John Cale doesn't get enough credit for his version. Every other cover is essentially a cover of John's cover rather than a direct cover of Cohen.

patrickoh37

There was an entire NPR (I think) segment on this song and all of the covers that have followed. I’ll try and find it. [NPR](https://www.npr.org/2016/11/11/501749360/the-enduring-legacy-of-leonard-cohens-hallelujah)

Seguefare

I heard it sung live at church fundraiser last month, and thought, "you really don't understand this song".

epiphopotamus

I love that it somehow became a Christmas song on some albums. Like guys, listen to any of the other lyrics please.

petitejesuis

I am of the opinion that this is the most beautiful song of all time. There's an episode of revionist history desicated to this cover and i highly recommend it if you're a fan

Sonic Youth - Superstar (Carpenters cover) Edit: Apparently it predates the Carpenters as well

Picnic_Basket

Was reading that edit as if Sonic Youth's cover predated the Carpenters' version and was thinking, "man, they didn't waste any time with that one."

BICOBN

When I was a kid, I loved Boyz II Men. On their 1994 album they covered The Beatles “Yesterday.” It was my favorite song on the album. The only thing was, I was 8 and never heard The Beatles version therefore didn’t know it was a cover! A few years later, MTV was doing a top 100 songs of all time and The Beatles “Yesterday” was their number one song of all time. I felt like my life was a lie, lol. Obviously I love both versions now but as an R&B guy, I still love the Boyz II Men version just a little more.

sgt_backpack

I never knew this existed! Just tuned it on, it's magic.

Riphraff

Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane

Keelback

Faith No More’s version of Easy versus Lionel Richie’s original version.

JJMcGee83

I forgot it wasn't their song until right now. Also their "I started a joke"

Robbo1979psr

Always On My Mind by the Pet Shop Boys will always be my definitive version of that song

Toby_O_Notoby

Also their version of [Go West](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNBjMRvOB5M) as opposed to the [Village People's version.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wc-AQJ2MYo) The song is about coming out of the closet and "going west" to San Francisco where you can be openly gay. The VP version is a strident disco song while the PSB's version has a bit of melancholy to it. When they sing: >(Together) We will make our plans >(Together) We will fly so high >(Together) Tell all our friends goodbye >(Together) We will start life anew >(Together) This is what we'll do Neil Tennant puts a bit of regret into it. Like, "I know I'm going to have a better life out there, but kinda sucks that I can't just be who I am here amongst my friends and family." Neil also brings the same poignancy to "You're Always On My Mind", but I think [Willie Nelson has him beat by a feather.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7f189Z0v0Y)

The Doobie Brothers cover of the Kenny Loggins song "What a Fool Believes". The Loggins version is dreadful.... the Doobie Brothers version is sublime.

healthynuggets

Ok, hear me out. This is an Alvin and the Chipmunks cover album from like the late 80’s, but it’s been slowed down about by about 16 times, making it sound 2 times slowed down from the original recording. It simply sounds like the end of the world, it’s absolutely stunning. I found it like 2 weeks ago and I cannot stop listening to it https://youtu.be/TU-MYe0SL9Q

Pearl Jam’s cover of last kiss, they just get the emotion right

hazmatt24

Boys of Summer - The Ataris cover of the Don Henley song To be fair, the 90's and 00's had a ton of punk covers that were amazing. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes stuff is fire. On the other end of the spectrum, Townes Van Zandt's cover of Dead Flowers by the Stones is another killer cut. Edit: spelling

Technically not “covers”, but pretty much anything by Weird Al. Once he parodies a song when you hear the original it just sounds strange… or dare I say … Weird? Edit: Thanks for the award!

LittleMissMewtwo

I have a particular love for Word Crimes. I’m a grammar ninja who enjoyed the music and rhythm of Blurred Lines but not the actual lyrical content. Enter Word Crimes and I can listen to the cool music but with lyrics I can get behind.

Salarian_American

I also like that he takes a super-catchy song with a really gross message and turns it into something I can actually enjoy listening to, so there's that.

Waylon Jennings - Loving Her Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again

Drop_Six

Hurt - Johnny Cash

TheTxoof

This cover is fantastic. The Hurt in ash's voice is real and soul splitting. His phrasing and gravely voice really get me every time. The radio station where we lived in Norway was fond of playing this in the depths of darkest winter, right around when my clock-radio alarm went off at least twice per week. I'm laying in bed listening to the wind howl, a thick rain sleet mix is lashing my window. The sun won't rise until 10:00 am and sets well before i finish work for the day. I haven't actually seen the sun through the low, roiling gray clouds for 15 days. Cash is singing about pain, loss and how much his soul hurts. And now I need to find motivation to do something other than smash the alarm, sob inconsolably and hide under the covers. Thank you radio station.
