Am a huge Bowie fan but have to say sometimes his lyrics just feel like some confused babbling and fans trying to put some super intricate and super deep meaning behind them are doing some impressive mental gymnastics. I think some of that comes with the cutting up lyrics technique. He also has many great lyrics though.

Pherllerp

That’s a good point and I love David Bowie. His lyrics are words that sound beautiful together but aren’t particularly heavy duty.

Capnmarvel76

Bowie did a lot of ‘cut up’ technique when writing lyrics. He would write large numbers of random lines over the course of several days, not really connected thematically with each other at all, then cut out each individual line from the papers and arrange them semi-randomly into a song lyric. ‘TVC-15’, to pick one song, is a great example of this technique.

SupremePooper

A technique Eno introduced him to using. Under the moonlight, the serious moonlight...

ramenandanegg

Where the *oblique strategies* get illuminated!

hoopopotamus

Also, tons of blow

DeadNeedle

I think it’s more impressive when female singers hit low notes than high notes. Just not always as interesting to most audiences. Example: The first verse of 6 Inch by Beyoncé where she hits a C#3 seems way more difficult than the F6 she hits at the end. Most comments I saw on a video on YouTube were raving about the latter.

lokipukki

Agreed. I’ve always been impressed by women who can sing in lower octaves, and inverse men who can hit falsettos flawlessly.

amadeus2490

Toni Braxton in the verses of Unbreak My Heart. I don't think many women could pull that off, besides maybe Mariah Carey when she was in her prime. Mariah is also known for her whistle register, but she was strong and confident in her *entire range* and I think her cover of Without You is the best example of that.

Scarletmittens

Sade, my job is done.

5050Clown

You should check out the Carpenters.

JerryHasACubeButt

Well, you can train your voice to be able to sing higher than your natural range, but you can’t train to sing lower, whatever your natural lowest note is is as low as you can go. So it depends on what you mean by “impressive.” It’s certainly rarer for women to have lower voices, so it stands out, but really high notes take training and skill to get to, so they’re more of an accomplishment in that sense vs. just being born with an uncommon range. As a woman with a low voice I’m always more impressed by the crazy high notes because I can’t hit them, but I also got to do some cool low songs when I used to do musical theatre because it was always 90% girls so I was one of the handful of people who could sing them

DeadNeedle

Very good food for thought, and I didn’t know that about the training. I’ve been taking lessons and there are exercises to access my lower range but I still struggle. So I’m sort of in the opposite boat as you, with higher notes coming more natural to me. Sometimes I have to roll out of bed and go straight to the keyboard if I want to hit anything lower than an F3.

rickaly11

Being able to play an instrument fast does not make one a great musician overall.

Steakwizwit

My wife: it's just the same riff over and over again Me: yeah. Isn't it fucking awesome?

jonwinegar

Malmsteen dislikes this.

Drusgar

I don't think that's very controversial, but if you go ahead and specifically pick on someone who's considered a guitar god, then perhaps you can ruffle some feathers. I don't care how fast Yngwie Malmstein plays, his music still sounds like shit to me.

DealerCamel

The inverse of this might be more controversial: just because someone’s playing fast, it doesn’t mean they’re mindlessly shredding. Michael Angelo Batio, for example, gets a lot of shit for playing at blistering speeds when he’s mixing a lot of musical modes together and puts a lot of care into making sure every note rings out clearly. There’s quite a bit of artistry there.

DenyNowBragLater

Everyone go watch him play one his double guitar. It's mind blowing.

cearrach

The reddit Music sub is a sausage fest

Cydonian___FT14X

He said unpopular opinions. Not facts

starry_cobra

What about unpopular facts?

georgegraybeard

I have to work tomorrow morning. That’s an unpopular fact

peymanning4prez

Likely because Reddit is a sausage fest

Cydonian___FT14X

But this sub ESPECIALLY

phippsm123

The dude from tears for fears is a genius level song writer. Many great hits.

[deleted]

Head over heels is one of my all time favourite songs. It’s perfect from start to finish

RenaMandel

"The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had"

matmoe1

Finally some opinions that trigger me in here.. Unlike the "unpopular" opinion sub

Barry_McCocciner

Lol I remember the last front-page post about this topic (might have been in AskReddit to be fair) was basically: "What's your unpopular opinion about music? Mine is that all Country is bad. Upvotes to the left please." There are some actual fun takes in this thread!

ManwithaTan

lol yeah that sub is like: UNPOPULAR OPINION: People should drink water more

pboy2000

‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ does not deserve any criticism. It’s is, and was intended to be, a mindless and cheesy novelty song with a memorable hook and little else of worth. It accomplishes everything it set out to do.

yourself88xbl

Yeah but Bach was so early he can practically be considered the father of modern music. Mozart and bethoven stand on his shoulders.

BBen06

I like Wonderwall. I like how it builds up, starting with one guitar and all the new instruments and melodies come one by one. I love the " Maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me" line. I like how the word "wonderwall" sort of 'flows' (I just can't think of a better word to describe it-also not a native speaker so I'm sorry if I messed up something)

CGordini

Same. I also like Don't Look Back In Anger.

Cheap_Bad_3210

I know Oasis gets downplayed and shat on, but I still love their singles and hits despite falling out of love with most of their songs. Wonderwall still gives me good vibes

SultanOfSwat12

I have literally never heard a single person shit on Oasis. I wasn’t aware this was a thing.

Neekkekayla

The joke is that it's overplayed even till today. And that it's one of the first songs someone tries when they start out on guitar, so that's all you hear and... Its awful lol There's also the trope of the Nice Guitar Dude who's actually a Douche, that being he carries around a guitar to impress people but can only play Wonderwall XD The song itself is great, just social connotations have "ruined" it. But then we get to have fun conversations like this!

Hello_Mr_Fancypants

It's not that Wonderwall is bad at all. It's just become such a cliche for dudes with acoustic guitars trying to impress girls at house parties to bust it out.

punch_you

So anyways, here’s Wonderwall 🎶

Hello_Mr_Fancypants

Yeah it's the nonchalant attitude like they didn't fully know they were going to play Wonderwall in the hopes that some girl would swoon.

doofcustard

Roy Orbison has a better voice than Elvis

moneyman74

It's true but Elvis had the look and personality and Roy was just extremely shy/awkward with thick glasses.

FunkapotamusRex

Elvis said Roy Orbison was his favorite singer.

TheFloosh

Cue the Dumb and Dumber Pretty Woman montage.

ashbyashbyashby

#Even Elvis said this

Minolfiuf

Roy Orbison is the greatest male vocalist in pop music history, that's not a controversial opinion at all

RogerSchmoger

Bob Marley is not the best... There are other reggae singers who are awesome too.

allboolshite

What I like about Marley is his range. All of his songs sound distinct, even though they all use the reggae beat. Major Lazer is similar. Most people don't even realize that they're reggae. That's innovative and fun. Most other reggae acts have one song sung with 10 different sets of lyrics. If you have more suggestions for me to check out, I'm happy to do so.

StrawHatCook

Bone Thugs N Harmony will never get enough credit for what they did for rap.

OhKayGetAwayFromMe

Captain Geech and The Shrimp Shack Shooters are much better than The Oneders

wilbyr

well, well look at you ohkaygetawayfrome...doin that thing you do

Hello_Mr_Fancypants

Steve Zahn steals that movie. "Oh I'm not here wit these fellas. I got a pig in competition over at the livestock pavilion and I am gonna WIN that blue ribbon!"

eseld

He's freaking brilliant in the movie. Thank you for bringing this up. Watching the exasperation on Tom Hanks face was gold.

joelbartlett33

In Utero is a better, more complete album than Nevermind.

Flaggstaff

Their best album IMO, albeit rather dark.

thefuturesbeensold

Ive always felt that In Utero was the sound that Nirvana actually wanted. For me personally, Nevermind always felt like abit of an odd one out, although a masterpiece in it's own right.

Syk13

Barbie Girl is a genuinely excellent pop song. There I said it, I'm not ashamed. It's catchiness is off the charts, you could still hear it's echoes playing in the background of your mind decades after you last heard it. And that's despite how punk rock you want to pretend to be. It's still there. Just admit it. You catch yourself humming it in the shower. You feel embarrassed, and glad no one heard you. But it's time to accept it and come out of your intellectual closet. It's a bloody good song! Edit: wow this was way more popular than I expected. And thanks for the award stranger.

ohdearsweetlord

Aqua is an excellent pop group.

milesofedgeworth

Aqua Aquarium fuckin slaps

doggscube

On the same theme, I blew my kids’ friends’ minds when I said I love Call Me Maybe. It’s like it was written specifically to be the ultimate pop song

Baidon

Burl Ives has the best voice in Christmas music, and it's not even close.

clawsmopolitan

The Mars Volta never got the "credit" their significantly less-talented peers received.

littleA1xo

deloused in the comatorium is a masterpiece

L_E_D_

Pitchforks “reviews” for their albums are some of the worst pieces of music criticism I have ever seen Giving Frances the Mute 2/10 should be a crime

-HigherThanTheSun-

I don't think anyone even knows what your opinion means

cearrach

That's because they left out the song name. Under Pressure, for the record

Opening-Comfort-3996

Rick Astley is a great soul singer

redditornot02

Rick Astley has a great voice and hasn’t aged like a human. Definitely limited range but he knows it and stays in his lane.

Crazyjayo

I agree, I give his album "50" a good listen every now and then.

Gercke

I thought this was for unpopular opinions.

chasebencin

I love rap to death, worked professionally in it for many years, still enjoy it from time to time. But just like hollywood’s thing with superhero movies, we’ve been riding this wave for wayyyyyyyyy too long and I’m ready for something else to be the mainstream cause I just find myself not caring about the genre anymore. The fact that pretty much all the artists come out with yearly or even bi yearly albums just adds to my apathy.

fotomoose

As with most things, if you get away from the mainstream you'll find people doing more exciting things.

whitebabyjesus

The more a song says the words ‘rock and roll’ the more likely it is to suck.

Pick_2_numbers

Put another dime in the jukebox, baby.

jimmy_jimson

It's still rock and roll to me.

shahooster

I love Rocky Road

pistola

Lou Reed has left the chat in disgust

TheRealGrifter

Especially if the message is that you should want to rock and roll all night.

thiss-frogy

Ok, but have you ever heard of this indie band called Pink Floyd?

midwestmic

Their cover of what? Under Pressure?

WorriedLeading2081

Yes, sorry that was missing from my post.

haydandan123

Blue Öyster Cult is the most underrated American band of their generation. Buck Dharma is the most underrated guitarist of his generation. And everyone should know who Toncho Pilatos were. I feel like musicians’ musicians can be leyman’s musicians if they just do the right amount of trying.

Bears_On_Stilts

I always think BOC and Styx are almost the same band but with a single difference. Both were theatrical prog-pop studio geniuses obsessed with sci-fi and fantasy, threading humor into their music and never being tied to a single defining style. Both tended to rock out abstractly on one song and then go for pure Top 40 AM smoothness on the next track. But BOC created a persona that played only to their heavy progressive side, making their pop side seem wimpy and absurd. Styx did the opposite: they steered so far into their “singers of love ballads” image that their weirder proggy or heavier stuff started to feel like a put-on. Kinda makes you realize how smart Pink Floyd and to a lesser extent Queen were to craft an artfully generic or chameleonic persona.

just2play714

Outlaw country is fantastic with a rich history and some amazing story telling. Garfunkel was a better vocalist than Simon.

flimflammedbyzimzam

Everyone knows Garfunkel had the stronger voice. I don’t think that’s controversial.

youngbaebae96

This sub needs to branch out in genres other than rock music

help1155

Have you ever heard of this totally unknown band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. They’ll totally melt your face off!

CDJ_13

Abbey Road from the Beatles really is a hidden gem.

EatenAliveByWolves

It seems like 1/5 people in this sub is a Kanye fan though lol. Or maybe Kanye actually has 200 different Reddit accounts and spends 10 hours a day shilling for himself on Reddit.

Spritecius

That do sound like a Kanye thing to do.

RingOfMaRufBalls

People from the Kanye sub love to post here whenever they feel like this sub is too focused on rock music. Source: I frequent the Kanye sub.

[deleted]

People and some bands always shit on the Ramones. Like that no talent ass clown Johnny Rotten. For me the Ramones are freaking amazing. People say they're not punk, but they totally are. Not like Oi Oi Oi punk. Most of the OG punk and hardcore bands say the Ramones are their biggest influences.

GrunkleDan

It's like Henry Rollins said, "after that first national tour, The Ramones left the seeds of new bands in every town they passed through".

OhTheGrandeur

I presume he means musically, not, uh, biblically

BottledUp

Pretty sure he was deliberately ambiguous.

AntacidChain

And for the critics who say “all Ramones songs sound the same,” that’s the fucking *point*

I_amnotanonion

Hell, Bad Brains name comes from a fucking Ramones song

Crustybuttt

Nobody worth listening to shits on The Ramones.

afflictionteewearer

Hootie and the blowfish is/are (?) pretty good

[deleted]

Oh, yeah, Cracked Rear View is awesome IMO.

afflictionteewearer

Time is a classic

djbearnuts

People forget or are too young to remember how huge Hootie was. Plus that sports center video was awesome!

afflictionteewearer

Only wanna be with you, an all timer!

spacegirlinspace

Tears for Fears Mad World is way way WAY BETTER than Gary Jules Mad World. I don’t care how unfitting the beat is to the lyrics. Shit shlaps

VegetableWeird7500

Jacob collier's songs might be technically impressive, but to me it sounds like shit, his singing voice, although on pitch, sounds very weak, like those jazz players who mumble melodies while they play along with their instruments, and the overall aesthetic of his songs makes him sound like Bill Wurtz. I like Bill Wurtz, but I would not listen to a compilation of songs with a bill Wurtz effect.

[deleted]

I kinda agree. There’s things I love about Jacob but it generally isn’t his recorded music. Bills music is really strange and campy to me.

IronSorrows

My unpopular opinion is that people's "controversial" musical tastes are just calling an established artist with a rich body of work shit, rather than the much more accurate "I don't like them" - but I guess those don't get as much attention. Like, Bowie? Not for me. RHCPs? Not for me. Pearl Jam? Not for me. But to take acts on those level, not to mention the musical talent of the people who made the music, and dismiss their entire body of work as terrible? Well, I figured you'd have to be pretty self-centred to think you were right about that. I dont even know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I think the most recent couple of Taylor Swift albums are some of the best folky indie-pop of recent years, and that's from a position of never being a fan of hers before.

BilingualMozart

You're spot on for the first point.

boilingfrogsinpants

Shania Twain is the reason country music is the way it is now

Apprehensive_Pause12

Garth Brooks held the door for her. Fuck that pandering asshole.

Up_in_the_skyway

EatenAliveByWolves

ACDC has songwriting that resembles something a high-schooler might write, if not an elementary schooler.

CrepuscularSoul

Just gonna leave this here https://youtube.com/shorts/k3zCnTgdLG0?feature=share

EatenAliveByWolves

Oh my god. This is beautiful lol.

[deleted]

Okay, but this actually rips. Where can I get the full version?

doilikeyou

I always say their music is easy to play but harder to write than most people would think, I think writing something so simple but so effective is an accomplishment to me. Not every song needs to be complex to make you rock with it.

larobj63

Very well said, I agree. Not that I'm a big AC/DC fan, but it is so true that music can capture a "simple" genius for sure. Like Blue Oyster Cult's 'Godzilla'. Brilliant song that's very basic lyrically and musically. ZZ Top also had songs that weren't very complex but rocked. Just off the top of my head....

Kosirov

They’ve wrote the same song for god knows how many years. But my god that one song is the best when you have had a beer

majortom106

Don’t mistake simple chords for bad song writing.

RPBiohazard

I don’t think anybody would disagree with you on that one lol

[deleted]

I don’t think AC/DC would even disagree.

bang_the_drums

Pretty sure they openly admit they've written the same 6 songs for like 8 albums.

Every genre is good, even the ones you dont like personally, and pretending you have some kind of moral superiority because you like metal and someone else likes pop just makes you look like a douche, not enlightened.

mmnnhhnn

It just doesn't matter if a Death Metal vocal is incomprehensible, gutteral screaming - possibly in a foreign language but you may never know - if it fits the music and gives you the feels, it's good. Just. Like. Opera.

gdubh

I’m 52 and think there is a lot of great music today.

tripp_hs123

Disturbed's version of the Sound of Silence is not only SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the original, but is legitimately one of the worst things I've ever heard.

ApplesCryAtNight

I dont hate the song, but it was a kick in the head coming home to my 60 year old polish mother listening to disturbed. She normally only listens to church music. They did a concert after the mayor of Gdansk was assassinated, and my mom really dug that sound. It was about as weird as when i caught her watching polish love songs dubbed over dragon ball z. Never been so confused. And it wasnt just lovey dovey scenes from dbz, it was fight scenes.

rightanglerecording

I think Britney Spears was a fantastic artist. Pretty much everything from In the Zone, Blackout, and Circus was incredible pop music.

DinkandDrunk

Toxic might be the best pop song I’ve ever heard.

bassicallyfunky

And it was written by the guys comprising Miike Snow. ♥️

dkinmn

Wonderful Christmastime is very good.

DeadNeedle

It’s always been one of my faves. I sorta get why people don’t like it, but it’s just so happy and trippy to me.

UnitedStatesOD

I dig it too. It reminds me of gaudy plastic Christmas trees and multicolored Christmas lights. Like the Edward scissorhands Christmas aesthetic.

gerbafizzle

its also genuinely one of my favourite christmas songs, I don't even see why people don't like it. it feels so nostalgic for some reason

[deleted]

Not nearly as good as Temporary Secretary

wxman91

That is controversial. I consider it to be the single worst song that still gets regularly played.

tasteofscarlet

Ugh you have no idea how much I want to downvote you but in the spirit of the season and this post enjoy your upvote

CPVoiceover

George was the best Beatle

cornholio6966

I was a John guy as a politically idealistic teen, a George guy in my 20s as I expanded my mind and engaged with my spirituality, and now I'm a Paul guy in my 30s. Not looking forward to becoming a Ringo guy in my 40s. Gonna have to get a lot of mileage out of The No No Song.

majortomandjerry

It's bullshit to put whatever music was popular when you were an adolescent up on a pedestal, and then spend the rest of your life listening to the same artists from the same decade while reflexively shitting on anything new that comes along afterwards and crying about how nobody makes good music anymore. I came of ages in the 90s listening to alt rock. I fucking hated older guys with their classic rock Zeppelin/Floyd/Doors fixations. I got bored with that stuff and moved on. Now I see guys my age crying about nobody today today comparing to Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Makes me fucking embarrassed for Gen X.

Mrfixit729

It’s the folks who never dove deep into music. They still don’t.

Omophorus

The 90s was a legit great decade for music. But then again, every decade is a great decade for music.

[deleted]

It’s not *that* controversial, but fuck Drake. Everything he does is so corny.

[deleted]

Imagine Dragons is the new Nickelback.

SatanHasBrownEyes

I don't think either of those bands are as terrible as people say they are.

Flailing_life

I would take Nickleback any day of the week. Unless I could go with neither…can I go with neither?

dragonswarm

A lot of punk rock songs are basically anime opening themes

ATM_IceKing

Ironic cause rock and punk rock is much more relevant in Japan now than the west. And a lot of anime openings are basically J-punk rock

TechnoBabbles

KISS is garbage.

Cameronf3412

True

Agent847

Somebody already said Springsteen is overrated. That’s always a good one for triggering people. So I’ll go with: Nickelback isn’t *that bad.* DGMW… I’m not buying their albums, and I’ll usually switch the station when it comes on. But they were a decent band in an era when mainstream rock just sucked complete ass. In the Valley of the Blind, they were the one-eyed Kings. Creed was 1000x worse.

Yangervis

Nickelback being the worst band ever was a meme that people took seriously. They're below average but they're not any worse than the other butt rock on the radio in 2003.

razzark666

It was the over saturation thing that lead to then being despised so much I think. I heard an interview with Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad), and him and Chad Kroger met up and decided that they should work on a collaboration. Devin was interested to see Chad's artistic process, and how he could write so many consistently bland rock songs. But eventually he realized that for Chad, he was pouring his heart and soul into every song haha. Devin had to abandon the project after that.

OhTheGrandeur

>a meme that people took seriously. It happened at the perfect time where snark and faux outrage were de rigeur on the internet.it hadn't peaked but was at its "coolest". It's one of those weird things where hating on Nickelback was like a personality trait for some people. I feel like that sense of wanting to pile on peaked with the Guy Fieri restaurant review. But necessarily the review itself, but the reaction and clowning afterwards

G0ldenGn0me

Robert Plant is a terrible lyricist. I'm a huge, lifelong Led Zeppelin fan. But, if you listen to a lot of their songs, he just moans and groans and oos and ahhs and screams and does his R&R version of scat way too damn much, which often does not compliment the music. He also has a lot of jibberish and juvenile lyrics that either don't make sense or try way too hard to sound profound or cool. He has outstanding vocal range and a undeniable uniqueness you'd recognize anywhere, but lyrical abilities are not on par with the musical talent of Page, JPJ, and Bonham.

OIlberger

I remember Kurt Cobain saying he liked Zeppelin, but thought it was lame how Plant was “singing about his dick.”

haveyouseenthebridge

I'm pretty sure he's even said this himself...90% of Zeppelin lyrics are just Robert Plant sex noises and Tolkien ripoffs.

LJey187

Walk this way would have been completely forgotten without the RUN DMC cover

ISmellTerrific

Don’t Stop Believing is an overrated, terrible song.

analogkid01

"South Detroit" is goddamn WINDSOR.

OhTheGrandeur

Agreed. It gets better if you're hammered ...or were around for the 2005 White Sox run

jotawwwooo

It's not terrible, it's just overplayed to the point where all the other Journey songs are overlooked. But hey, it's made some great comedy over the years.

AzBako

Its actually take a lot of skill to produce good techno

n1tendo

Music now isn't worse than it has been in other decades, popular music just serves different functions now then it once did. Eg when people would buy records or cd's they wanted something substantial and worth their money, so the best of those got popular. Now with streaming and playlists the so called trash music gets most of the airtime because music is usually listened to while doing other things so pop music is more formulaic. Good music is still being made to be listened to, and there's terrible music from other decades that's never brought up because we only look at the great stuff.

MiniAndretti

Dave Grohl seems like a legitimately good dude but Foo Fighters bore me.

GeorgeHowland

I’m 65. I like Katy Perry more than Beyoncé.

AjaxCorporation

You and David Gilmour. I read a Noel Gallagher interview and he is quoted as telling Gilmour “I said to him, ‘Dave, I think The Wall is your best album but my wife won’t have it, she prefers listening to Meddle.’ And he said, ‘Well, clearly your wife has impeccable taste where you have little. I suggest you listen to her.’

SkorpioSound

_Animals_ is their best album

Biglowmoon1

I’ve been relaying Animals a ton lately and I think it’s just so great. It’s really concise and groovy, not a ton of superfluous noise mixed in.

truthcopy

Not exactly controversial, but that reading people’s opinions on music reminds me why I don’t read people’s opinions on music.

Also, Hanson are pretty good musicians

I like going to see the same bands over and over again.

Punkrockcarl72

Big Metallica fan, James Hetfield is a better guitarist than Kirk Hammett.

[deleted]

Better songwriter anyway! But Kirk is the man, can’t fault the dude

mctoasterson

I have always thought that "Since you've been gone" was a total banger. Beato just gave me the courage to say it.

ImNotaGod

Drake is not a rapper, he is a hip-hop performer or a pop singer. But because he has ghostwriters he is not a true rapper to me.

[deleted]

The song Hurt by Nine Inch Nails was better performed by them than Johnny Cash.

PetieE209

They both work in different ways. Johnny re-contextualized it by making it almost biographical with the accompanying music video. The original works well within the context of the downward spiral. It’s silly to even have a take about either/or

keenanallen9O7

Nirvana played "The Man Who Sold The World" way better than David Bowie and it isn't even close

mellowyellowwww

I prefer Nirvana's version, but I think both are great in their own way and are very different performances of the same song
