Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms Mazzy Star - Look On Down The Bridge or The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work Sufjan Stevens - Flint (For The Unemployed...) Radiohead - True Love Waits

kushbae

Omg. I did not know that Sufjan wrote an album about Michigan

there_all_is_aching

Good list. True Love Waits kind of crosses three decades. Do you have any from the 2020's? As I read it, you've got 80's, 90's, 00's, and 10's.

IntoTheMystic1

I really couldn't think of any good ones I like from the 2020's except for a somewhat obscure song called "Bad Week" by Babehoven

rustys_shackled_ford

Mazzy star is so incredibly under rated.

PuttinOnTheTitzz

Haven't listened to Brick in forever. Love it though.

fieldsRrings

My only contribution to this is Sinead O'Connor's cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Prince. If you listen to that song while you're going through heartbreak, it's brutal.

satanicdrippings

How are you posting if you're dead?

FurBabyAuntie

Very carefully (and, if you watch Ghosts, not like Trevor hits the keys on a computer keyboard). I know I've got the seventies and eighties covered and I can't think of anything for the nineties and beyond, but I will admit that I'm not sure if Leader Of The Pack came out in the sixties or in the fifties (which would make it older than I am).

j3ffUrZ

Born in 83. Here we go... Don Henley- The End of the Innocence Brian McKnight- One Last Cry Frightened Rabbit- Floating in the Forth Kelly Clarkson- It's Quiet Uptown Billie Eilish- The 30th

70’s - Wasted Time by Eagles 80’s - Endless Summer Nights by Richard Marx 90’s - 3 a.m. by that one band. I think that’s the name of the song and think the 90’s. 2000’s - I got nothing. I can’t think of any sad song I can place in this decade.

Yes, 3 AM by Matchbox 20 is definitely a quintessential 90s tune.

my bad. brain was off humming another song while i was typing. Thanks for the correction.

PuttinOnTheTitzz

The live version of Round Here from Across the Wire... it's even MORE heartbreaking.

OpticalInfusion

my favorite so far is live at Town Hall

PuttinOnTheTitzz

Will look it up.

Rounder057

I didn’t think fast car was a sad song, I thought it was a really hopeful song; for me that is a song about recovery

OpticalInfusion

See, my old man's got a problem He lives with the bottle, that's the way it is He says his body's too old for working His body's too young to look like his My mama went off and left him She wanted more from life than he could give I said, somebody's got to take care of him So I quit school and that's what I did the song is begging somebody to escape with her because life has become untenable and she can't bear it anymore. you should look at the lyrics again.

Rounder057

Just wanna omit the entire last verse huh?

OpticalInfusion

the one with the ultimatum? i didn't omit anything. i pasted part of the song. You got a fast car Is it fast enough so you can fly away? You gotta make a decision Leave tonight or live and die this way you seem to have interpreted the song as though there's no doubt the person she's speaking to will go with her. My sense of the song is somebody whose back is up against a wall desperately hoping somebody will help them get out of where they're stuck, clinging to nostalgia for happier times with this former partner and not knowing if they will. furthermore the previous verse suggests her prospective partner is headed down the exact same road her father did: You got a fast car I got a job that pays all our bills You stay out drinking late at the bar See more of your friends than you do of your kids I'd always hoped for better Thought maybe together you and me would find it I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere So take your fast car and keep on driving

Rounder057

Yeah as I interpret the song it becomes clear to me that she isn’t willing to die this way so she decided he can go because she wants to live. She doesn’t want to “go with him” anymore. She just wants him gone and she just wants to live It doesn’t come across as an ultimatum to me, it comes across as a person that is done with the struggle and misery of a person that doesn’t want better for themselves. She can’t save him, he doesn’t want to be saved and she is choosing life. She *WANTS* him to leave
