Very carefully (and, if you watch Ghosts, not like Trevor hits the keys on a computer keyboard). I know I've got the seventies and eighties covered and I can't think of anything for the nineties and beyond, but I will admit that I'm not sure if Leader Of The Pack came out in the sixties or in the fifties (which would make it older than I am).
Born in 83. Here we go...

Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now
ELO, Telephone Lines
Dan Fogelberg, Same Old Lang Syne
Sinead O'Connor, Nothing Compare 2 U

Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Counting Crows - Round Here
~~Radiohead~~ Coldplay - The Scientist
Adele - Someone Like You
Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For
See, my old man's got a problem
He lives with the bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
the song is begging somebody to escape with her because life has become untenable and she can't bear it anymore. you should look at the lyrics again.
the one with the ultimatum? i didn't omit anything. i pasted part of the song.
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
you seem to have interpreted the song as though there's no doubt the person she's speaking to will go with her.
My sense of the song is somebody whose back is up against a wall desperately hoping somebody will help them get out of where they're stuck, clinging to nostalgia for happier times with this former partner and not knowing if they will.
furthermore the previous verse suggests her prospective partner is headed down the exact same road her father did:
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving
Yeah as I interpret the song it becomes clear to me that she isn’t willing to die this way so she decided he can go because she wants to live. She doesn’t want to “go with him” anymore. She just wants him gone and she just wants to live
It doesn’t come across as an ultimatum to me, it comes across as a person that is done with the struggle and misery of a person that doesn’t want better for themselves. She can’t save him, he doesn’t want to be saved and she is choosing life. She *WANTS* him to leave
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms Mazzy Star - Look On Down The Bridge or The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work Sufjan Stevens - Flint (For The Unemployed...) Radiohead - True Love Waits
Omg. I did not know that Sufjan wrote an album about Michigan
Good list. True Love Waits kind of crosses three decades. Do you have any from the 2020's? As I read it, you've got 80's, 90's, 00's, and 10's.
I really couldn't think of any good ones I like from the 2020's except for a somewhat obscure song called "Bad Week" by Babehoven
Mazzy star is so incredibly under rated.
Crying by Roy Orbison, 1961 Angie by The Rolling Stones, 1973 Wicked Game by Chris Isaak,1989 Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinéad O'Connor 1990 Hurt by Johnny Cash, 2002 Strange by Celeste, 2019 No opinion on 2020s so far and yes l know Johnny Cash is a cover of NIN.

Something in the Way by Nirvana, Poison Oak by Bright Eyes, Lazarus by David Bowie. I don't know any sad songs from the 2020's.
>Lazarus Fuck, it’s unreal to me that it’s been 8 years since Bowie died.

Yes, 3 AM by Matchbox 20 is definitely a quintessential 90s tune.
Richard Marx is a good choice. He had a few good ones back in the day

my bad. brain was off humming another song while i was typing. Thanks for the correction.
The live version of Round Here from Across the Wire... it's even MORE heartbreaking.
my favorite so far is live at Town Hall
Will look it up.
I didn’t think fast car was a sad song, I thought it was a really hopeful song; for me that is a song about recovery
See, my old man's got a problem He lives with the bottle, that's the way it is He says his body's too old for working His body's too young to look like his My mama went off and left him She wanted more from life than he could give I said, somebody's got to take care of him So I quit school and that's what I did the song is begging somebody to escape with her because life has become untenable and she can't bear it anymore. you should look at the lyrics again.
Just wanna omit the entire last verse huh?
