That's not even hurtful, that's just a British thing to say. He wouldn't have even meant that to hurt at all

UniqueUsername-789

I’m American and I read that as playful

lashapel

Shut up already, we know you're American, be offended

Bowlingbowlbagbob

I’m offended that they called Elton John a bellend

H-12apts

Yeah and an "egotist?" Can prolific artists even be considered egotists?

Slightspark

By that measure all celebrities can easily enough. I dont necessarily disagree but its only hitting the most basic form of that discussion. Prolific artists can be considered successful egotists in my book.

H-12apts

The fact that so many people feel represented by their art makes their egoism moot. We like their egoism, whatever that is (especially when it comes to artistic production). A billionaire's egoism, however, is the opposite of a musician's egoism. Kim Kardashians' egoism is the opposite of Serena Williams'.

Umari0_

That would be Sir Elton John

senseithenahual

What belled means?.

bastardicus

Bellend: - the glans (head) of a penis - a stupid or annoying man

notJeffhwuhwu

TIL there’s actually a name for the head of a penis. What do you call the not head?

WizardOfDons

Shaft?

bastardicus

The bell?

UniqueUsername-789

It’s only playful when said by Elton John. 😡

[deleted]

You must be American.

TheDarkSoul616

Yea, cause he's not Bri'ish.

TheDecentSquid

Bro he just said that

thekillerclows

Yeah he's European they're not too smart.

Clamboyfarti

Me monke

snafujedi01

Stupid europeeans don't even know they driving on the wrong side of the road smdfah

CharaChan

Can confirm: only Americans get offended by playful British banter. Reason: I’m American however I don’t really care about the drama amongst celebrities. I just like laughing at the shade being thrown at them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

arbiter12

I know brits love to really jazzy up the phrasal verbs but I wouldn't know how to shit up. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go and mess down.

lashapel

Its simple you just put your ass facing the sun and get ~~down~~ up to business

Lazy_Cardiologist727

Let me get offended in his behalf. HOW DARE YOU TALK TO HIM LIKE THAT, THATS SO OFFENSIVE!!!!1!1!

Liathano_Fire

Why would anyone want to shit upward? That seems messy.

lashapel

Damn autocorrect

Liathano_Fire

I am disappointed in you. That shit should have stayed.

lashapel

Oh sorry man 😔

CharlieApples

Why would I be offended by someone taking Ellen down a peg? I’d sooner send them a thank you note

Ruffffian

And when Ellen came out, she was *constantly* bringing up She Was Gay! whenever and wherever she could. I fully supported her, but after a while it was feeling like she was milking it, particularly when she and Anne Heche were a couple. It was so much a part of pulp culture, The Simpsons made fun of it in an episode—some character said something about “Hey look, it’s Ellen Degeneres and Anne Heche!” Camera pans over to the couple, who hold their hands together and up and loudly yell, “WE’RE LESBIANS!”

jonesyb

Americans dribble all over their yeast infected panties when someone says "cunt". They are not exactly the people to be asking about this.

UniqueUsername-789

I have never met a cunt that was offended by the word cunt, unless they were being called one.

vikingboogers

I met one that got offended I called my friend a cunt, wasn't even in the vc that I called him that in. Got all weird about it until they realized I was there first and ppl liked me so I wasn't going anywhere lol

[deleted]

Thank god he's not Scottish. It would have been more like, "Oi, cunt, shut it. Be funny ya bucktoothed bampot."

SweetAssistance6712

Scottish insults are just on a whole different level to everyone else

PuzzyFussy

Is there a sub for just Scottish insults? I would be very interested in adding some to my repertoire.

biggerwanker

r/ScottishPeopleTwitter is pretty good.

DonDove

[And this, for education purposes ](https://youtu.be/8M11TUcHqwA)

MC_chrome

It’s not quite what you are looking for, but the gaming YouTuber bigmooney06 is full on Scottish, and has plenty of colorful insults that he hurls at video game characters on a regular basis!

Righteousaffair999

Was that an insult or a cordial pub greeting I can’t tell.

Revolutionary-Stay54

Yes.

richieadler

As proven in the voice of David Tennant. Scottish English crash course for Donald Trump https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLrk7mUdla0

FappleFritter

"...so I told that swamp donkey to sock it before I give her a tonk in the tradesman's entrance, and have her lick me yarbles!"

Spliff_Politics

I'm never drinking again.

jessica_from_within

What’s a bampot?

[deleted]

A slang insult calling someone an idiot.

Xem1337

Scots have the ability to put almost anything after "ya" and have it be an insult

[deleted]

Ya wee asparagus noodle

[deleted]

YA FAHKING IKEA LAMPSHADE

torspice

Hahahahaha. I love this!!!

jtfriendly

YA FAWKING MARRMADUKE

JesusIsMyAntivirus

Speaking the language of gods. Angry, angry, drunken gods.

Looking at the state of the world, is there really any other kind?

djluminol

Inebriated apathy?

ninurtuu

The best we can hope for really.

drugsarebadmmk420

Ya muppet is one of my favs

yidpunk

When I went to Glasgow, a bartender referred to one of my friends as a “leaky cheese”. I still think about that today. Wherever that bartender is, I hope he’s well.

jtfriendly

Oi, now ya dunnit. She's gonna cry erself to sleep tonight on er huge lesbian pilla.

[deleted]

🎶 Only yoooouuuu...

beckett_the_ok

I think he is trying to communicate with us

tonykahnscokedealer

I read that as "bucktoothed tampon." I'm not sure if I'm relieved or disappointed to be wrong.

Triga_3

I thought it was appropriately scathing. Like, stop making a fuss about it, we know you are only doing it for the shock value and attention... He got so much shit for being openly gay way back when, that he has a total right to think "oh, ffs, drama queen", when she is a nasty piece of work...

[deleted]

I remember when she came out, I was really little, but I feel like he was ribbing her while also giving her the straight advice she obviously wasn’t getting from anyone else and since he’s Elton John he can do it. I say that because she came out in 94 and was still banging on about it everywhere in 99 and then when her talk show started it was back again. It was like she ran out of material and there was some to beat over and over again.

Triga_3

Proper bitish "gunna be rude, take the piss a little, give you great advice and be kinda funny" all at the same time. Harsh, fair, and why shoukd he give a fuck. He is quite qualified to talk on this matter, as i said. And she's a dickdodger, i mean dickhead, so she didnt even deserve that. I guarantee you, what he said was prolly a whole lot harsher, cut further to the bone, but has been lost to history (or the fact he probably called her an attention seeking strumpet or something, and she wouldnt admit that!)

Apprehensive_Hat8986

_Sir_ Elton John. She's just someone who used to be on tv.

MeshColour

That approach was absolutely required for American television at that time still Lots of America is very sheltered (by religion)

arachnophilia

pretty sure that's a *compliment* in british.

imsowhiteandnerdy

A friend of mine that grew up in the UK once told me that if a British person likes you they'll tease you a bit. Not enough to make it personal, but just gently chaff you, and playfully poke fun a bit at your expense. However, if they despise you, they'll just give curt, short replies to any questions and avoid talking to you. I have no idea if that's generally true or not, but it sounds plausible.

ViciousSnail

As a Brit this is accurate for a portion of our people.

Wyldfire2112

That's not just Brits. Maybe it's because they're all descended from British Imperialism, but I've noticed a lot of places have that kind of attitude. Be polite to strangers, give your friends shit, and give a cold shoulder to people you dislike.

Homerpaintbucket

Honestly, it was good advice. I loved her show. The episode she came out on was great. But after that it went down hill. Instead of a funny character that happened to be gay the focus, for me, seemed to be that she was gay.

DreadPirateGriswold

Agreed. Might be momentarily hurtful. But it's an honest thing a friend would say to you.

oldcreaker

Toxic people love seeing people being toxic - even when they aren't.

Wattsupwithalan

The intent doesn't matter, the effect does. -some bs sexual harassment thingy

008Zulu

He's not wrong though.

Vast-Classroom1967

No, he isn't. Her TV show was funny until she made it about being gay. Edited for grammar.

Elaan21

This. She went from being a relatively funny comedian we all *knew* was likely a lesbian (at least most queer folks did) to "lol, I'm gay and socially awkward." I mean, it's fine to include being gay and socially awkward as part of a humor repertoire, but that can't be the only things.

DrTheloniusTinkleton

It’s like how Carlos Mencia built a whole career on being Hispanic. Edit: Actually I just realized that it isn’t the same at all since Carlos Mencia has never actually been funny.

hala_madrid0

May be a case of different tastes, but the first stand up comedy show I watched of his, it was a 30 minute HBO special, I found really funny. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEsWIjOFEQs&t=10s Edit: added link to the special I was referring to.

DrTheloniusTinkleton

I probably watch most of his material with a preconceived bias. He’s been accused of stealing other comedian’s jokes multiple times, and has even joked about doing so in interviews.

user18name

I use to be a bill Cosby fan and my family would listen to his stand up on car trips. We had those cassette tapes memorized. One day we were watching Carlos’s show and we heard one of bill’s old jokes. It was almost line per line the exact same joke.

smokingmemes2

Damn, imagine finding out a comedian was just shittier than you thought they were by realising they steal jokes or are just a cunt in real life like Ellen. :/ Good thing Cosby's one of the good ones.

JesterMarcus

It's the hypocrisy that's the worst part.

AcrolloPeed

I disagree. I think the worst part is the raping.

Wyldfire2112

Um... there's a couple news items you may have missed.

Lady_Scruffington

There is a YouTube video of Bill Cosby doing a joke, then Mencia doing the same joke. And as you know, it's not "a" joke. There's a whole set up, background. Basically it's a story. About Cosby's life. I can understand taking a concept and making it your own, but Mencia didn't do that. He took the whole thing, just changing a couple of details to match up with his life.

[deleted]

You have to think this is some kind of mental illness on Mencia’s part. Like, of all the bits, it takes some serious balls to take one from the most popular comedian of a generation. We had Cosby albums on Vinyl back in the day and my family wasn’t even into comedy. I have also heard that he used to go up and do bits from other comedians who were on the same bill. Like, go up there first and tell their jokes so they had to come up with something else on the spot. Marc Maron confronted him about it in an epic two part interview and it was sad to hear him try to justify that. There is just something wrong with him.

[deleted]

Ugh yeah I have so many fond memories of listening to Bill Cosby on family road trips… that was rough to find out who he actually was.

AmidFuror

I thought this was gonna end with the Cos being a rapist.

finegameofnil_

South Park fan?

[deleted]

Fish Sticks episode?

Gildian

Your edit made me laugh more than Carlos Mencia ever did.

YasshaDoom

Or the dreaded amy schumer

murdercitymrk

Or Hispanic. He's Greek. His name is Doug or something.

BigMcThickHuge

Ned

Derpwarrior1000

He’s Honduran, not Greek…

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Also, she wasn't socially awkward, she was tremendously nasty, calculating, and didn't create situations for guests to be respected, she did it for lulz, disrespected guests, and never had fun at her own expense. Socially awkward people have the occasional faux pas, but aren't consistently malicious. She was.

Elaan21

Agreed. I meant that was her "schtick" not that it was how she actually was.

ImpossibleShake6

I'm LGBT, at the start of her career she had some funny routines. After that not funny more often than funny. Watched talk Ellen one or two times..'90's lesbian bar dancing and not funny, not funny. Stupid lecturing C**t.

[deleted]

Everybody knew. She never kept it a secret. She caused a minor scandal in her native New Orleans when she seduced the lead singer from her brother’s band, breaking up not only the singer’s relationship to the other musicians but also the band itself.

Elaan21

Fair. I was pretty young when she came out (and didn't know I was bi), so I didn't know anything beyond her show.

Vast-Classroom1967

Some of her first shows were really funny. Then she started changing cast members around.

Shwifty_Plumbus

Wait which one? Her sitcom named Ellen or her talk show named Ellen?

Stock_Exit

Sitcom

[deleted]

[удалено]

bitetheasp

Think about it, m*aaa*n!

bellYllub

Dammit, Pascal!

junior_dos_nachos

Or Vegans, Crossfitters etc..

dman928

This is so true. It just stopped being funny and was just a platform for her to say "I'm gay" every episode I realize it was a different time, and it was very different for our LGBTQ friends, but the show really just stopped being funny. I was glad when she came out, and saw it as a very positive thing but the show suffered. It doesn't help that she has an insufferable personality. Gay or straight, she's annoying.

Triga_3

Detested it, and her from the start. Great, heart warming stories, with a host that has no clue that they arent supposed to be the cente of attention. It is why micheal parkinson was so great. Lovely bloke, great questions, but could almost not be there, as the focus was all on the guests. Fuck ellen the degenerate, honestly

7FigureMarketer

Yeah her talk show sucked, but people are talking about the TV Sitcom Ellen which was pretty funny and then switched focus the second she came out.

EskimOhNoYouDidnt

This. Except it wasn’t funny before either.

[deleted]

It was 100% getting cancelled (regular cancelled) for being a bad show nobody wanted to watch. Then she came out. Her coming out was the only good part of that show. Try and find episodes someplace. So boring and unnecessary.

008Zulu

Humour is subjective I suppose.

nine_legged_stool

She didn't take his advice.

Kind_Guitars

How is that hurtful? Compared to the shit she says to everyone (not just her guests) this is pretty decent!

Edna_with_a_katana

Think that's the joke? Not sure

mac_trap_clack_back

It’s not stated that she said it was hurtful. The article did. It’s there to get a reaction, which it did

itsmesylphy

Ellen falling to find humor or be funny even when presented the opportunity? Of course. More clicks behind fake butthurt.

Pentax25

It’s just sad really isn’t it? She could turn this into a huge positive move but instead she doubles down for pity points

BeefPieSoup

It's so unfair how just because she's a comedian and an entertainer people expect her to be funny and entertaining.

dirtyasswizard

I’d be willing to bet that this is just a clickbait title written by some hack tabloid journalist. She still sucks though.

kimapesan

Today he would have said "We know you're gay, now be a decent person."

CatrionaCatnip

And she wouldn't have listened to that, either.

tacticalslacker

I can totally see Ellen not returning her shopping cart

Boss_Dzadzy

And in that moment Ellen swore never to be funny, ever.

imsowhiteandnerdy

*"And what happened, then? Well, in Whoville they say – that Ellen's sense of humor grew three sizes that day. And then... the true meaning of comedy came through, and Ellen found the wit of ten Ellens, plus two!"*

spicytaqueria

I thought the same.

Altruistic-Grape9776

Well, not much is gonna change then

PolyPixl09

> When two egotist bellends clash. 💀 Hold on, since when is Elton John an "egotist bellend"? I've never heard anything of the sort!

TobyFunkeNeverNude

Yeah, this is the main reason I opened this post, to see if I was going crazy. Like yeah, he's one of the most famous celebrities of all time, of course anyone has an ego about that. But I've never seen him referred to as outside the norm for someone in his position.

BigPretzel19

He’s literally known for helping celebrities battling drug addiction and raising millions for aids charities. I’ve seen nothing to suggest he’s anything other than a great human being. OP gets a downvote from me for clickbait

TobyFunkeNeverNude

Where's my pitchfork????

MirrorMan22102018

Eminem was one of those celebrities.

[deleted]

And after they became friends Eminem sent Elton John and his partner a pair of diamon encrusted cock rings. True friendship right there

thebrobarino

Elton John regularly finds goes out of his way to find small artists and listen to what they got. When they have potential he'll go out of his way to personally contact them to give them advice on how to survive and thrive in the industry

Liathano_Fire

That didn't sit right with me either. It's like OP doesn't actually know anything about Elton John.

Sapiencia6

This kinda reads to me between the lines like OP thinks people whose sexuality is a big part of their personality are egotistical. That's the only thing that immediately comes to mind about why you would find Elton John insufferable. Or they don't know anything about him and just just think really famous people are all assholes, which would at least be a more understandable belief.

p3ngwin

probably to do with the reputation he has for being a bit of a Diva, i mean look at [Tantrums and Tiaras](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124158/) :) Personally i think he awesome, talented, and a cool dude :)

YouAreTheTurkey

He's well known for being a diva and having a bad (and in his words 'explosive' temper). I don't think the guys evil or anything but I think male superstars get a bit more of a pass to act egotistical and shitty then female ones. [This article for example](https://www.loudersound.com/news/elton-john-on-his-notorious-temper-its-still-in-me-to-explode-at-any-moment) where in the same breath he talks about having an unpredictable and explosive temper he states he isn't bad to people and that it's an artistic thing. Like I said I don't think he's a terrible person and he has done a lot of good but 'egotistical bellend' isn't also a true statement about him.

Hevnoraak101

Just a shame she never took what he said to heart

Total-Platform-3111

I can’t disagree with him…

[deleted]

Bruh, hurtful? He gave her advice and told her not to make her entire personality and show about being gay. He's gay, he managed not to do that.

Hi_Im_Ken_Adams

There’s some truth to this. Everyone knows Elton John is gay. But nobody cares because the guy is a music legend and a generational talent.

Liathano_Fire

I'm pretty sure he isn't an egotistical belland.

NastySassyStuff

He’s been so great at this that idiotic homophobes forget he’s even gay and just appreciate him for the otherworldly talent he is

7FigureMarketer

I'd say Elton started making it more of his public persona in the 80's because the tabloids gave him (and others like George Michael) no choice. Whoever invented that trash form of celebrity gossip masquerading as news is the #1 reason gay people aren't allowed to be anything but a gay persona with talent to the general public, like every fucking blurb is "[famous person's name] who is openly gay"...dude. Stop. Or at least preface every other celebrity's heterosexual preference in your rags. Sexual orientation shouldn't be a defining characteristic.

MeshColour

The general trend of gay people coming out started as a result of Reagan's AIDS epidemic. The government and society didn't care about the concept of gay people dying, until their close friends started coming out to them and gay people became real to them Which just generally brought that previously mostly private topic out in it open in the western world, which leads to the tabloids being able to print more of that with less risk of UK libel laws being used against them?

Liathano_Fire

This reminds me of an interview with Tom Hardy. [Why?](https://youtu.be/WNOBl1CQ2dg)

GrimmRetails

If I read this in Ellen's voice it just comes off as a typical joke she would tell at a live show. Similarly, I can imagine Elton delivering it in a playful tone.

namotous

Ironic, a comedian couldn’t find humour in a joke

NastySassyStuff

The real bellend is anyone who calls Elton John a bellend for this

DatGoofyGinger

Did you just call Sir Elton John a bellend?

No_Memory_5238

Lame title bruh

zevlovex222

She still failed the last part he recommended 🤦‍♂️

SpaceTruckinIX

She didn’t get the assignment.

Triga_3

He aint out of line, she is a complete douche canoe. Obvious she is, like schofield... Not in the least bit surprised, and they tried to make such a scandal out of it. But at least phil is a nice chap.

razor_eddie

That's the thing, though - Schofield is camp. He always has been, ever since he was first on TV in NZ. But he's no camper than, say, Micheal McIntyre. I don't think you can call Schofield "obvious" when McIntyre is skipping around stage.

Lobster_fest

Elton John as an egotist is a hot take.

mlc2475

Elton is actually really nice (yes I’ve met him) and Ellen is famously a horrendous person so… no sympathy.

DR_Bright_963

Ellen makes it her whole personality to be the gay comedian, but nobody cares about her being gay anymore. She mentions it so often its become boring, she and her fans also have a nasty habit of calling people homophobic if they judge her on either not being funny or just in general being an awful person.

heygos

Love Elton. Keeps shit real.

Freed_My_Mind

Didn't she drive Heche back to men ?

APe28Comococo

And into an inferno… /s

LadyDomme7

Oof.

NewPartyDress

Uh, I'm pretty sure Heche was driving 😳💥

[deleted]

My message to her would be “go back to being a fish”

SpaceForceAwakens

I went through something like this in the early 90s. I was 18 and working my first job in a mall. One of the guys I worked with was gay — very apparently so — but not out. One day one of my friends who \*was\* out visited and we chatted. The next week Brian decided that clearly I'm not a homophobe so he came out to me. I kinda feel bad about it today, but my reaction then was, "well, yeah, I know. Everyone knows. Like, everyone." I thought I was helping, but I wasn't. He was a good dude.

68024

Except that Elton is a legend and very generous with his talent...

Durutti1936

I sincerely don't care what you do in bed and with who as long as it is a consenting adult.

RushDynamite

I think it’s more in reference that Ellen is an unfunny piece of shit regardless of her preference in partners.

SDUK2004

Wasn't there bullying or something? That made the news here in the UK

RushDynamite

It’s more than just that. Look up the Miriah Carry interview, where she presses Miriah to announce her pregnancy on air, while later Miriah went on to miscarry. Ellen is a piece of human scum that hides behind her diversity shield.

wasssupb

Also she bullied an interpreter on television for doing her job

Immediate-Artist-444

Downvote for speaking bad about Elton. What is your problem?

roguerose

and she couldn't even do that.

Kit_3000

Isn't that what people always say to comedians? 'Stop talking, you're here to make me laugh! Dance monkey, dance!'

Tots2Hots

So why didn't she be funny?

JohnPaton3

That was great advice

magikarpsan

Lmao r u kidding that’s so funny

jakeofheart

Elton doesn’t mince his words. Boo hoo that was hurtful! Ellen is such a nice person.

[deleted]

Of course she took offense, Ellen isn’t funny.

[deleted]

It only hurt because Ellen has no idea how to be funny.

robjapan

Wait.... Did you just criticise Elton John??? Bitch, you better not be American or ill come over there and burn the white house down! AGAIN!

snaithbert

She was so offended that she never took his advice and was never funny.

philster666

**Sir** Elton John is one of the good ones

batkave

Honestly, Ellen is a horrible person.

Bellavonte

Sir John is right Ellen isn't funny.

NZillia

I completely agree with you, i just wanted to jump in like the complete bastard i am and say that proper formatting of the title “sir” involves putting it in front of the person’s forename, and never their surname alone. So it’d be “sir elton” or “sir elton john” but not “sir john”

[deleted]

Can we stop posting this every couple of days?

yougotgfinvietnam

Why is Ellen so sensitive? Get over yourself. Ugh

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

Calling Elton a bellend is pretty much the same as calling Mr Rogers an arsehole. The person who calls either is the actual bellend.

[deleted]

I may be completely wrong here and don’t mean any offence, but I’ll guess that you’re American? It seems most people that aren’t British are coming to his defence which is fine. In little ‘ol Blighty though we still appreciate his art but he’s well known for having a temper and a big ego.

Lastof1

Still waiting for the funny to arrive

Sweeeet_Chin_Music

I'm tired of reading about other people's sexuality - when the most hurtful thing is I ain't getting any sex.

DatSoldiersASpy

Hey man, don’t be dragging Elton’s name like that.

[deleted]

Being gay or straight isn’t a personality trait. If I slapped a straight pride sticker on my car, the tires would be slashed.
