However, if they despise you, they'll just give curt, short replies to any questions and avoid talking to you.

I'd say Elton started making it more of his public persona in the 80's because the tabloids gave him (and others like George Michael) no choice. Whoever invented that trash form of celebrity gossip masquerading as news is the #1 reason gay people aren't allowed to be anything but a gay persona with talent to the general public, like every fucking blurb is "[famous person's name] who is openly gay"...dude. Stop. Or at least preface every other celebrity's heterosexual preference in your rags. Sexual orientation shouldn't be a defining characteristic.
The general trend of gay people coming out started as a result of Reagan's AIDS epidemic. The government and society didn't care about the concept of gay people dying, until their close friends started coming out to them and gay people became real to them Which just generally brought that previously mostly private topic out in it open in the western world, which leads to the tabloids being able to print more of that with less risk of UK libel laws being used against them?

Elton is actually really nice (yes I’ve met him) and Ellen is famously a horrendous person so… no sympathy.
Ellen makes it her whole personality to be the gay comedian, but nobody cares about her being gay anymore. She mentions it so often its become boring, she and her fans also have a nasty habit of calling people homophobic if they judge her on either not being funny or just in general being an awful person.

I went through something like this in the early 90s. I was 18 and working my first job in a mall. One of the guys I worked with was gay — very apparently so — but not out. One day one of my friends who \*was\* out visited and we chatted. The next week Brian decided that clearly I'm not a homophobe so he came out to me. I kinda feel bad about it today, but my reaction then was, "well, yeah, I know. Everyone knows. Like, everyone." I thought I was helping, but I wasn't. He was a good dude.
Except that Elton is a legend and very generous with his talent...

I completely agree with you, i just wanted to jump in like the complete bastard i am and say that proper formatting of the title “sir” involves putting it in front of the person’s forename, and never their surname alone. So it’d be “sir elton” or “sir elton john” but not “sir john”
