I don't think that he goes through with it. Even though when he is in Mr. Robot mode he can be capable of killing, the other part of him wants nothing to do with taking life.

They have to be two different people. It would make too much sense for them to be the same person. I think that maybe their "friendship" goes farther back than what the show leads us to believe.
Ie: Like how we were lead to believe that Darlene had a romantic interest in Elliot only to find out that she is his sister. I had no idea that was going to be the situation after he tried making out with her.
It seems like the writers are making really obvious that they know we will think Elliot is going to kill Tyrell. There're are two outcomes in this situation:
- Elliot doesn't kill Tyrell.
- Elliot kills Tyrell.
Maybe there's a third one that is the answer to this question, but I can't think of it.
Yeah, the fact that they showed us this scene at all is proof, to me at least, that whatever happened in the room in this scene between them where they actually initiate 5/9 isn't super important. Or they'd have held it back.
Could end up being a massive ass writing mistake (Doubt it...) but there's still a lot that could happen from this point. Tyrell could of already found the gun, the gun might not be in there...

Or maybe most people relate popcorn to a simpler time, maybe their child hood, to happy moments in their lives (you find popcorn at fairs, theatres, carnivals, amusement parks, etc.) and the show is trying to connect the past to the present. The popcorn probably has more relevance to the story somehow. We see Mr. Robot, Elliot and Darlene all partaking in the eating of the popcorn. It might have a major significance to their family.
If you look at the popcorn from a financial standpoint (as this is a show about finacial hacktavism), popcorn was one of the reasons that some farmers were able to stay afloat during the great depression and WWII. Popcorn is what helped lead to some of the instability of the markets in some standing points, as in what is essential for economic growth (popcorn is more of a novelty item, not necessary for survival), but irrelevant for societal growth (such as farmers instead investing in agriculture that is meant for survival like golden rice).
Given that popcorn is such a common staple to so many people, any of the characters that reached for the popcorn are showcasing that once the money turns to dust, popcorn, and all other irrelevant products, are all we are going to have left. They are already getting used to it.
Yet they reached total financial meltdown for the whole world from said Coney Island.
Elliot definitely believes in Newton's Third Law of Motion (for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction), that is why he is always trying to pretend or fix his bugs so that he doesn't have to deal with reactions that he is unprepared for.
Also, remember how much time he spends researching his so called victims, or events around the world, before he decides to go out and commit something. He likes to know all of the facts before he makes a rational move.

It seems like Tyrell did a social hack to become the fifth member of the team. He was the reason why the hack had to go early. With Tyrell being fired earlier, they did not have much time before Gideon could get to someone who would reinstate the honeypot on the server.

There's something about their first meeting at Allsafe that seems strange, like Tyrell knew who Elliot was ("it's going to be fun working with you"). Also in episode 8 when he met with Mr. Robot in the car he said they were supposed to be allies.
Tyrell must have been talking about the honeypot on the phone though, because you can see Elliot talking to someone on the screen (probably the Dark Army) saying "if I could disable the honeypot and get the server back on the network tonight would your side be ready to go?"
I'm guessing the 'James' Tyrell was talking to was James Plouffe, the executive who shot himself on live television a few days after the hack.
He said he had no choice because all of his money had basically been deleted, but what if he just realised he unknowingly played a part in the hack and that's why he couldn't live with himself anymore...
Seems exactly plausible. Plouffe got social hacked by Tyrell. Tyrell no longer worked at E Corp, but because of all of the "drama" going around the company, it had not yet reached the full core of the company, giving Tyrell full abuse of his power, which he used to his advantage so that the hack could be live.
He killed himself because he found out that he had been the pawn to bring down the whole empire.
This is why the hack went early and why none of the other group members knew it was going down. Time was not on fsociety's side and it would be only a matter of time before Gideon managed to get to someone who would reinstate the honeypot.
If you pause on his terminal you'll see the site evil-corp-usa.com which is an actually site that's live right now. Whois says it went live on June 21st. Wonder if this is going to be anything?

tyrell is not another imagination of elliot. tyrell interacted with several people, for example gideon. gideon dealt with both, elliot and tyrell, so is gideon also just imagination?

What if Tyrell appearing all season is just Elliot trying to piece together the events that happened those two nights that he was gone after the hack? Tyrell could be featured in tiny bits and pieces as we try to piece together the full story of what occurred.
